Antifungal cement mortar or microbiological calcium carbonate precipitation on cement surface has been investigated as functional concrete research. However, these research concepts have never been fused with each other. In this study, we introduced the antifungal calcite-forming bacteria (CFB) Bacillus aryabhattai KNUC205, isolated from an urban tunnel (Daegu, South Korea). The major fungal deteriogens in urban tunnel, Cladosporium sphaerospermum KNUC253, was used as a sensitive fungal strain. B. aryabhattai KNUC205 showed $CaCO_3$ precipitation on B4 medium. Cracked cement mortar pastes were made and neutralized by modified methods. Subsequently, the mixture of B. aryabhattai KNUC205, conidiospore of C. sphaerospermum KNUC253, and B4 agar was applied to cement cracks and incubated at $18^{\circ}C$ for 16 days. B. aryabhattai KNUC205 showed fungal growth inhibition against C. sphaerospermum. Furthermore, B. aryabhattai KNUC205 showed crack remediation ability and water permeability reduction of cement mortar pastes. Taken together, these results suggest that the $CaCO_3$ precipitation and antifungal properties of B. aryabhattai KNUC205 could be used as an effective sealing or coating material that can also prevent deteriorative fungal growth. This study is the first application and evaluation research that incorporates calcite formation with antifungal capabilities of microorganisms for an environment-friendly and more effective protection of cement materials. In this research, the conception of microbial construction materials was expanded.

Polyketone fiber, a newly developed high strength fiber, has a tenacity and modulus similar to the p-aramid fiber, and can be used for reinforcing mechanical rubber goods(MRG), such as tires, hoses, and technical textiles. It will be expected for replacement of super fiber such as aramids and increasing the technical textile market share. This paper surveys the mechanical properties of polyketone fiber for technical textiles. For this purpose, dyed polyketone fabric is prepared, mechanical properties of coated and uncoated polyketone fabrics such as tensile strength, elongation and tear strength were examined before and after weather resistance test(temperature $63{\pm}3^{\circ}C$, humidity 60%, amount of power $0.35w/m^2$). The differences of mechanical properties between uncoated and coated fabrics for high functional technical textiles and composite materials are estimated through this study. The UV-stability of polyketone fabric showed obvious improvement after coating. After 168h(7day) of UV exposure, the coated fabric showed less deterioration in mechanical properties with the retained tensile strength and elongation at break greater than 22 and 17% of the uncoated polyketone fabrics values, respectively.

This study was focused on developing an optical sensor that monitors ultraviolet (UV) light. Recently, we proposed and demonstrated a novel, highly sensitive UV sensor based on a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). To ensure that the incident UV light is focused on the FBG surface, the sensor was coated with an azobenzene polymer material that acts as a UV-induced stretchable functional material, in combination with a cylindrical focal lens. In this study we have improved the sensitivity of the sensor by employing a cylindrical focal mirror as a curved reflector, to refocus the UV light passing through the FBG. We considered the performance of several different types of reflectors and chose the optimal radius of curvature for the reflector. Compared to the UV sensor without an auxiliary device, the sensitivity of the FBG sensor with a focal lens and a curved reflector was 15 times as high.
Fat reduction in the formulation of cheese emulsion causes problems in its flowability and functional characteristics during spray-dried cheese powder production. In order to eliminate these problems, the potential of using microparticulated whey protein (MWP) in cheese emulsions was examined in this study. Reduced-fat white-brined cheese emulsions (RF) with different dry-matters (DM) (15%, 20%, and 25% excluding emulsifying salt) were produced using various MWP concentrations (0%-20% based on cheese DM of emulsion). Their key characteristics were compared to full-fat cheese emulsion (FF). MWP addition had no influence on prevention of the phase separation observed in the instable group (RF 15). The most notable effect of using MWP was a reduction in apparent viscosity of RF which significantly increased by fat reduction. Moreover, increasing the amount of MWP led to a decrease in the values of consistency index and an increase in the values of flow behavior index. On the other hand, using high amounts of MWP made the emulsion more liquid-like compared to full-fat counterpart. MWP utilization also resulted in similar lightness and yellowness parameters in RF as their full-fat counterparts. MWP in RF increased glossiness and flowability scores, while decreased mouth coating scores in sensory analyses. Fat reduction caused a more compact network, while a porous structure similar to FF was observed with MWP addition to RF. In conclusion, MWP showed a good potential for formulation of reduced-fat cheese emulsions with rheological and sensorial characteristics suitable to be used as the feeding liquid in the spray drying process.
Various two-dimensional nano materials such as graphene, zeolite, and metal-organic framework have been utilized to develop an ultra-thin high-performance membrane for water purification, gas separation, and so on. Particularly, in the case of graphene oxide, synthesis methods and thin film coating techniques have been accumulated and established since early 2000s, therefore graphene oxide has been rapidly applied to membrane field. The multi-layered graphene oxide thin film can filter molecules separately by the molecular sieving of interlayer spacing between adjacent layers, and it is also possible to separate various materials depending on the surface functional groups or the degree of interaction to intercalated materials. This review mainly focuses on the nanofiltration application of graphene oxide. The major factors affecting the separation performance of graphene oxide membrane in solvent are summarized and other technical elements required for the commercialization of graphene oxide membranes will be discussed including stability issue and fabrication method.
Purpose: Salivation is considered to be an important factor in the control of halitosis, and the amount of salivation has been shown to be closely related to the level of hydration. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the relationship between dehydration and halitosis. Methods: Twenty healthy young females with no dental problems were recruited. All participants were induced to become dehydrated and then over-hydrated. After inducing each hydration state, the severity of hydration and halitosis factor (organoleptic scores, amounts of resting and functional saliva, gas examinations, and tongue coatings) were measured. Hydration statuses were graded as dehydration, normal, or over-hydration according to urine osmolality. This was a cross sectional study with a cross over design. Results: The dehydrated status was associated with higher organoleptic scores than the normal or over-hydrated status (1.75±0.75 vs. 0.87±0.63, and 0.65±0.53, respectively. p<0.05). Mean values of CH3SH, (CH3)2S in portable gas chromatography for the dehydrated, normal, and over-hydrated status were 11.70±37.00, 6.75±13.50, and 2.80±5.87 nmol/mol, 10.50±15.59, 7.25±10.87, and 1.50±2.55 nmol/mol, respectively. p>0.05). (CH3)2S (r=0.410, p=0.009) showed a moderate positive correlation with dehydration status. The resting salivation rates were relatively lower for the dehydrated status than for the normal or overhydrated status (p>0.05), and tongue coating results were also higher for the dehydrated status (p>0.05). Conclusions: Dehydration status appears to be positively correlated with a low resting salivation rate and high portable gas chromatography results. This shows that dehydration might be an etiologic factor of halitosis.
To investigate the effects of the improvement of postharvest quality on fresh tomato, antimicrobial microperforated (AMP) films were prepared and their antimicrobial abilities were observed. AMP films were made by coating different types of natural antimicrobial agents such as cinnamon, clove, and clary sage essential oils into microperforated (MP) films. Cinnamon essential oil of 10% (v/v) has proven to be very effective as inhibitor of the mold growth on tomato, compared to the clove and clary sage essential oils. Quality changes of fresh tomatoes packed using the natural AMP films (AMP10 and AMP30) and MP films (MP10 and MP30) during storage were evaluated. Total microbial growth, weight loss, firmness, lycopene content, and decay rate as the major quality parameters were monitored over 9 days at $15^{\circ}C$. The oxygen transmission rates and mechanical properties between the natural AMP and MP films were also compared. There was no significant difference in change of oxygen transmission rate, tensile strength and elongation between the AMP and MP films. For storage studies, the freshness of tomato packaged in AMP30 film was higher than that in OPP film (the control), MP10, MP30, and AMP10 films. Especially, AMP30 film exhibited high efficiency compared to the control for tomato decay during storage periods. Based on the results, the microperforation and antimicrobial properties of the packaged films may significantly affect the maintenance of an optimum gas composition within the package atmosphere for increasing the storage life and quality of produce. They were also effective on the inhibition of microbial growth by controlled release of antimicrobial agent at an appropriate rate from the package into the tomato. Natural antimicrobial agent coating microperforated films could use potential functional package as a method of extending the freshness of postharvest tomato for storage.
In this study, separation of ethylbenzene from mixed xylene was performed by using TS-1 zeolite membrane. TS-1 zeolite membranes were prepared by microwave synthesis and changing the reaction temperature. MFI-type TS-1 membranes are synthesized on alumina tubes by functional coating using 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (3CP-TMS). On top surface of interlayer, nano TS-1 crystals were seeded. To form interlayer, microwave-assisted growth of TS-1 zeolite was carried out and thin zeolite layers were produced. All of the prepared membranes are tested to separate ethylbenzene from mixed xylene at different operating temperatures. TS-1 membrane with zeolite seed synthesized at $170^{\circ}C$ compared to 120, $140^{\circ}C$ shows the best ethylbenzene separation at the operation temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ from ternary mixed xylene containing certain composition of ethylbenzene/p-xylene/m-xylene. (separation factor : 2.64, ethylbenzene flux : 1703.0 mol/$m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$).
In this study, frying mix was prepared containing 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0% brown rice fiber(BRF). The samples along with a control were then compared regarding their quality characteristics, including pasting properties, spreadability, pick-up ratio, color, textural characteristics, moisture and oil contents, and sensory qualities, all to determine the optimal ratio of BRF. For the pasting properties of frying mix, the control group was evidenced by a significantly higher peak viscosity, through viscosity, and final viscosity than that observed in the BRF samples. Breakdown was the highest at the 1.0% addition level, and time to peak viscosity and pasting temperature were maximal with the 0.5% addition. There was no significant difference in setback among the experiments. Spreadability and pick-up ratio of frying batter were not significantly different among the samples. As the BRF content increased, the lightness, greenness decreased, whereas yellowness increased. The BRF samples presented significantly higher hardness of fried batter than the control group and there was no significant difference in crispiness among the samples. Moisture content of fried sweet potato decreased with increasing BRF and oil content was the maximum on the control group. In the sensory evaluation, appearance, color, flavor, savory taste, yellowishness, coating thickness, off-flavor, and oiliness were not significantly different among the fried sweet potato samples. Bindingness, crispiness, and chewiness were highest in the control samples but minimal at a addition level of 2.0%. The control group evidenced significantly higher overall acceptability than were observed in the BRF samples. In conclusion, the results demonstrated that 0.5~1.0% BRF may prove quite useful as a additive for frying mix in the preparation of fried sweet potato and may provide favorable textural and functional properties.

The cation exchange polymer, poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA), was coated onto polyamide (PA) thin film composite reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. Then these membranes were investigated for the model foulants, bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA), and sodium alginate (SA) to check whether there are some improvement. The contact angle of PSSA coated PA RO membrane showed $58^{\circ}$ from $78^{\circ}$, the value of PA RO membrane, which confirmed successful hydrophilization. As the operating pressure increased (2, 4, 8 atm for BSA, HA and SA 100 ppm in feed solution), the fouling phenomena was worse for both none- and PSSA-coated membranes. The fouling increased in the order of BSA>SA>HA due to the interactions between sulfonic acid in PSSA and functional groups of foulants. On the other hand more significant fouling reduction was observed in the order of HA>SA>BSA. The photographs of scanning electron microscopy showed the same trend. As a result, there was the improvement of fouling phenomena for the PSSA coated RO membranes, distinctly in the case of HA.
