  • As polymer coatings of nano-structured surface become significant to obtain functionalized materials, catechol derived from a mussel protein has attracted increasing attention for its universal adhesiveness. In addition to the unique adhesion property, its reducing ability of metal ions during oxidative polymerization to polydopamine (pD) widely expands the application of catechol molecules in the field of surface modification. In this study, we present the catechol conjugated smart polymer coatings for regulating surface properties such as wettability and anti-fouling effects. In additino, the in situ silver coating of electrospun polymer nanofibers using a silver-catechol redox reaction is presented as a simple method to produce metal nanostructures.

  • PTEF membranes are used for roofing materials of membrane structures. PTEF is the abbreviation of Poly-tetra Fluotide-ethylene. These materials are consisted of fiberglass weave and polyetrfluoroethylene coating. Also, PTEF membranes have some problems of structural capacity by wind or snow load, etc. In this study, sensor housings using lead switches are bonding in PTFE membranes, Monitoring to changes tension and tear damages are studied using radio frequency. If tension is received on edged membranes, bonded lead switches of sensor housings will be destroyed by changes tension, and these become to send signals of damages at the connected radio frequency system with increased tension. Study of these functional membrane materials will be contributed to prevent water leakage and long-term maintenance of membrane structures.

  • Using various surfactants, multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) was dispersed in organic solvent, isopropylalcohol(IPA). To refine the MWNT and give the functional group, MWNT was treated with sulfuric acid/nitric acid(v/v=3/1). The cationic, nonionic and anionic surfactants were used as MWNT dispersion agents in the organic solvent. Dispersion effect of various surfactants was observed by optical microscope and HR-TEM. Surface resistivities of MWNT dispersions were measured after coating on PET film. MWNT was dispersed well by poly vinyl pyrrolidone(PVP), nonionic surfactant.

Hybrid Transparent Conductor by using Solution-Processed AgNWs for High-Performing Si Photodetectors

  • A hybrid transparent conducting layer was applied for Si photodetector. To realize the hybrid transparent conducting layer, a 200 nm-thick ITO layer was deposited onto a Si substrate, following by a solution-processed AgNWs-coating on the ITO. The hybrid transparent conducting layer showed an excellent low electric resistance of $15.9{\Box}/{\Omega}$ with a high optical transparency of 86.89%. Due to these optical and electrical benefits, the hybrid transparent conductor-embedding Si diode provides an extremely high rectifying ratio of 3386. Under light-illumination, the hybrid transparent conductor device provides extremely high photoresponses for broad wavelengths. This implies that a functional design for hybrid transparent conductor is crucial for photoelectric devices and applications.

  • BNNTs (Boron nitride nanotubes) is an analogue of CNTs (Carbon Nanotubes) in terms of lattice structure. In BNNTs, a boron atom forms sp2 hybridized bonding with three nitrogen atoms, and so does a nitrogen with three boron atoms in the honeycomb structure. Its innovative properties, such as high thermal conductivity, neutron shielding capability, superb oxidation resistance at $900^{\circ}C$, excellent chemical resistance, and superior mechanical properties are advantageous for a wide range of applications, especially for electric device packages, neutron shielding, protective coating materials, and functional composites. In this paper, boron nitride nanotube synthesis, properties and application are reviewed.

  • 실리카와 폴리아닐린의 core-shell 복합체 나노입자를 실리카 나노입자 분산용액을 이용하여 제조하였다. 제조된 복합체 나노입자를 전기변색박막의 소재로 이용하기 위하여 알코올 용액에 분산하였고, 분산된 용액에 Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)를 소량의 HCl 용액과 함께 첨가하여 코팅 용액을 제조하였다. 코팅 용액을 인듐주석산화물(ITO) 박막이 도포된 유리 기판위에 도포하고 열처리 하여 매우 높은 부착력을 갖는 전기변색박막을 얻을 수 있었다.

  • Cinnamoyl ester(PGEFC) of poly(phloroglucinol-formaldehyde) glycidyl ether which has photosensitive functional group was prepared to apply to photoresist. Photosensitivity of PGEFC was estimated by the solubility difference in organic solvent before and after exposure to light. The yield of residual film was calculated by immersing the sample-coated quartz plates in the solvent which was used in coating. The yield of the residual film which was closely related to the sensitivity of the film, was affected by the degree of polymerization of the backbone resin, sensitizers and their concentration. The sensitivity was depended upon the degree of polymerization. Most of effective sensitizer for PGEFC among the sensitizers was 2, 6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline.

Surface Characterization and Morphology in Ar-Plasma-Treated Polypropylene Blend

  • Surface modifications using a radio frequency Ar-plasma treatment were performed on a polypropylene (PP) blend used for automotive bumper fascia. The surface characterization and morphology were examined. With increasing aging time, there was an increase in wettability, oxygen containing polar functional groups (i.e., C-O, C=O and O-C=O) due to oxidation, the amount of tale, and bearing depth and roughness on the PP surface, while there was a decrease in the number of hydrocarbon groups (i.e., C-C and C-H). AFM indicated that the Ar-plasma-treatment on a PP blend surface transforms the wholly annular surface into a locally dimpled surface, leading to an improvement in wettability. SEM showed that the PP layer observed in the non-plasma-treated sample was removed after the Ar-plasma treatment and the rubber particles were exposed to the surface. The observed surface characterization and morphologies are responsible for the improved wettability and interfacial adhesion between the PP blend substrate and bumper coating layers.

Short Review on Quartz Crystal Microbalance Sensors for Physical, Chemical, and Biological Applications

  • Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) based sensors are used for various applications owing to advantages such as excellent accuracy and precision, rapid response, and tiny footprint. Traditional applications of QCM-based sensors include biological sensing and thin-film thickness monitoring. Recently, QCMs have been used as functional material for novel physical and chemical detections, and with improved device design. QCM-based sensors are garnering considerable attention in particulate matter sensing and electric nose application. This review covers the challenges and solutions in physical, chemical, and biological sensing applications. First, various physical sensing applications are introduced. Secondly, the toxic gas and chemical detection studies are outlined, focusing on introducing a coating method for uniform sensing film and sensing materials for a minimal damping effect. Lastly, the biological and medical sensing applications, which use the monomolecularly decorating method for biomolecule recognition and a brief description of the overall measuring system, are also discussed.

Promotion of 3T3 and HDF Cell Migration by Gelatin-modified Fibroin Microspheres

  • The goal of this study was to use gelatin to modify the surface of fibroin microspheres to enhance their biofunctionality for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. Three different methods were used for the modification: coating, incorporation, and covalent bonding. Wound-healing assays demonstrated that gelatin modification of fibroin microspheres enhances 3T3 and HDF cell migration. Although the level of gelatin coverage varied depending on the method used, there was no significant difference between the modified microspheres. The gelatin-modified microspheres also increased the migration velocity of individual 3T3 cells. The results suggest that gelatin modification of fibroin microspheres is a promising approach for developing functional biomaterials with enhanced biological properties. Further optimization of gelatin modification is necessary to maximize the biofunctionality of fibroin microspheres.
