Recently, studies on utilizing tensor expression on image data analysis and processing have been attracting much interest. The purpose of this study is to develop an efficient system for classifying image patterns by using second order tensor expression. To achieve the goal, we propose a data generation model expressed by class factors and environment factors with second order tensor representation. Based on the data generation model, we define a function for measuring similarities between two images. The similarity function is obtained by estimating the probability density of environment factors using a matrix normal distribution. Through computational experiments on a number of benchmark data sets, we confirm that we can make improvement in classification rates by using second order tensor, and that the proposed similarity function is more appropriate for image data compared to conventional similarity measures.

This paper proposes a pattern classification method of interval vectors by interval neural networks. The proposed method can be applied to pattern classification where attribute values of each sample are given as interval numbers. First, an architecture of interval neural networks is proposed for dealing with interval input vectors. Next, a learning algorithm is derived from the cost function. a cost function is defined using the interval output from the interval neural network and the corresponding target output. Last, using numerical examples, the proposed approach is illustrated and compared with other approach based on the standard back-propagation neural networks.
This work investigates the performance of fully complex- valued radial basis function network(FC-RBF) and complex extreme learning machine (CELM) based neural approaches for classification of power quality disturbances. This work engages the use of S-Transform to extract the features relating to single and combined power quality disturbances. The performance of the classifiers are compared with their real valued counterparts namely extreme learning machine(ELM) and support vector machine(SVM) in terms of convergence and classification ability. The results signify the suitability of complex valued classifiers for power quality disturbance classification.
In this paper, we proposed a post-processing technique for improving classification performance of electronic nose (E-Nose) system which may be occurred drift signals from sensor array. An adaptive radial basis function network using stochastic gradient (SG) and singular value decomposition (SVD) is applied to process signals from sensor array. Due to drift from sensor's aging and poisoning problems, the final classification results may be showed bias and fluctuations. The predicted classification results with drift are quantized to determine which identification level each class is on. To mitigate sharp fluctuations moving-averaging (MA) technique is applied to quantized identification results. Finally, quantization and some edge correction process are used to decide levels of the fluctuation-smoothed identification results. The proposed technique has been indicated that E-Nose system was shown correct odor identification results even if drift occurred in sensor array. It has been confirmed throughout the experimental works. The enhancements have produced a very robust odor identification capability which can compensate for decision errors induced from drift effects with sensor array in electronic nose system.
In this paper, SVM-based speaker classification is experimented with GMM-supervector. To create a speaker cluster, conventional speaker change detection is performed with the KL distance using the SNR-based weighting function. SVM-based speaker classification consists of two steps. In the first step, SVM-based classification between UBM and speaker models is performed, speaker information is indexed in each cluster, and then grouped by speaker. In the second step, the SVM-based classification between UBM and speaker models is performed by inputting the speaker cluster group. Linear and RBF are applied as kernel functions for SVM-based classification. As a result, in the first step, the case of applying the linear kernel showed better performance than RBF with 148 speaker clusters, MDR 0, FAR 47.3, and ER 50.7. The second step experiment result also showed the best performance with 109 speaker clusters, MDR 1.3, FAR 28.4, and ER 32.1 when the linear kernel was applied.
The market basket data in the form of a binary user-item matrix or a binary item-user matrix can be modelled as a binary classification problem. The binary logistic regression approach tackles the binary classification problem, where principal components are predictor variables. If users or items are sparse in the training data, the binary classification problem can be considered as a cold-start problem. The binary logistic regression approach may not function appropriately if the principal components are inefficient for the cold-start problem. Assuming that the market basket data can also be considered as a special regression problem whose response is either 0 or 1, we propose three supervised learning approaches: random forest regression, random forest classification, and elastic net to tackle the cold-start problem, comparing the performance in a variety of experimental settings. The experimental results show that the proposed supervised learning approaches outperform the conventional approaches.
EEG-based brain-computer interfaces has focused on explicitly expressed intentions to assist physically impaired patients. For EEG-based-computer interfaces to function effectively, it should be able to understand users' implicit information. Since it is hard to gather EEG signals of human brains, we do not have enough training data which are essential for proper classification performance of implicit intention. In this paper, we improve the subject independent classification of implicit intention through the generation of additional training data. In the first stage, we perform the PCA (principal component analysis) of training data in a bid to remove redundant components in the components within the input data. After the dimension reduction by PCA, we train ICA (independent component analysis) network whose outputs are statistically independent. We can get additional training data by adding Gaussian noises to ICA outputs and projecting them to input data domain. Through simulations with EEG data provided by CNSL, KAIST, we improve the classification performance from 65.05% to 66.69% with Gamma components. The proposed sample generation method can be applied to any machine learning problem with fewer samples.

In this paper, we propose the pattern classifier of Radial Basis Function Neural Networks(RBFNNs) for diagnosis of 3-phase partial discharge. Conventional methods map the partial discharge/noise data on 3-PARD map, and decide whether the partial discharge occurs or not from 3-phase or neutral point. However, it is decided based on his own subjective knowledge of skilled experter. In order to solve these problems, the mapping of data as well as the classification of phases are considered by using the general 3-PARD map and PA method, and the identification of phases occurring partial discharge/noise discharge is done. In the sequel, the type of partial discharge occurring on arbitrary random phase is classified and identified by fuzzy clustering-based polynomial Radial Basis Function Neural Networks(RBFNN) classifier. And by identifying the learning rate, momentum coefficient, and fuzzification coefficient of FCM fuzzy clustering with the aid of PSO algorithm, the RBFNN classifier is optimized. The virtual simulated data and the experimental data acquired from practical field are used for performance estimation of 3-phase partial discharge pattern classifier.
The prediction of protein function basically make use of a protein-protein interaction map based on the concept of guilt-by-association. The method however cannot determine the functions of proteins in case that the target protein does not interact with proteins with known functions directly. This paper studies protein function prediction considering the given problem as a K-class classification problem and proposes a predictive approach utilizing a modular neural network. The proposed method uses interaction data and protein related attributes as well. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can predict the functional roles of Yeast proteins whose interaction knowledge is not known and shows better performance than the graph-based models that use protein interaction data.

This study suggests integrated neural network models for Interest rate forecasting using change-point detection, classifiers, and classification functions based on structural change. The proposed model is composed of three phases with tee-staged learning. The first phase is to detect successive and appropriate structural changes in interest rare dataset. The second phase is to forecast change-point group with classifiers (discriminant analysis, logistic regression, and backpropagation neural networks) and their. combined classification functions. The fecal phase is to forecast the interest rate with backpropagation neural networks. We propose some classification functions to overcome the problems of two-staged learning that cannot measure the performance of the first learning. Subsequently, we compare the structured models with a neural network model alone and, in addition, determine which of classifiers and classification functions can perform better. This article then examines the predictability of the proposed classification functions for interest rate forecasting using structural change.
