In this paper, we approximate the solution of the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations by using a fully discrete finite element scheme based on the standard Galerkin method in space and implicit midpoint discretization in time. The proposed scheme guarantees the conservation of the total mass and the energy. First, a priori error estimates for the fully discrete Galerkin method is derived. Second, the existence of the approximated solution is proved by virtue of the Brouwer fixed point theorem. Moreover, the uniqueness of the solution is shown. Finally, convergence orders of the fully discrete Crank-Nicolson scheme are discussed. The end of the paper is devoted to some numerical experiments.
In this paper, a class of large time-stepping method based on the finite element discretization for the Cahn-Hilliard equation with the Neumann boundary conditions is developed. The equation is discretized by finite element method in space and semi-implicit schemes in time. For the first order fully discrete scheme, convergence property is investigated by using finite element analysis. Numerical experiment is presented, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the large time-stepping approaches.
A hyperbolic two-phase, two-fluid equation system developed in the previous work has been implemented in an existing nuclear safety analysis code, MARS. Although the implicit treatment of interfacial pressure force term introduced in momentum equation of the hyperbolic equation system is required to enhance the numerical stability, it is very difficult to implement in the code because it is not possible to maintain the existing numerical solution structure. As an alternative, two-step approach with stabilizer momentum equations has been selected. The results of a linear stability analysis by Von-Neumann method show the equivalent stability improvement with fully-implicit solution method. To illustrate the applicability, the new solution scheme has been implemented into the best-estimate thermal-hydraulic analysis code, MARS. This paper also includes the comparisons of the simulation results for the perturbation propagation and water faucet problems using both two-step method and the original solution scheme.
This describes a numerical method for predicting the incompressible unsteady laminar three-dimensional flows of fluid behaviour with free-surface. The elliptic differential equations governing the flows have been linearized by means of finite-difference approximations, and the resulting equations have been solved via a fully-implicit iterative method. The free-surface is defined by the motion of a set of marker particles and interface behaviour was investigated by way of a 'Lagrangian' technique. Using the GALA concept of Spalding, the conventional mass continuity equation is modified to form a volumetric or bulk-continuity equation. The use of this bulk-continuity relation allows the hydrodynamic variables to be computed over the entire flow domain including both liquid and gas regions. Thus, the free-surface boundary conditions are imposed implicitly and the problem formulation is greatly simplified. The numerical procedure is validated by comparing the predicted results of a periodic standing waves problems with analytic solutions or experimental results from the literature. The results show that this numerical method produces accurate and physically realistic predictions of three-dimensional free-surface flows.
This paper deals with a numerical study of flow-guider applied to controlling current in a bay. Two dimensional numerical model for tidal currents based on the depth averaged equation is developed and standard k-.epsilon. model is adopted to determine the turbulence diffusion. Equations are described in a generalized coordinate system to be implemented by non-staggered grid system and discretized by using finite volume method. Unsteady flow is simulated by fully implicit scheme. Hybrid scheme and central differencing are used to compute the convective terms and source terms, respectively. The tidal current in a rectangular bay is simulated and it gives satisfactory results. The realistic and distinct models of a large structure placed in bay are also exemplified with or without flow-guiders. The simulation results show that the flow-guider gives the residual tidal current in the bay by the different flux with respect to the direction of tidal current.

In this article, we introduce a finite difference method for solving the Navier-Stokes equations in rectangular domains. The method is proved to be energy stable and shown to be second-order accurate in several benchmark problems. Due to the guaranteed stability and the second order accuracy, the method can be a reliable tool in real-time simulations and physics-based animations with very dynamic fluid motion. We first discuss a simple convection equation, on which many standard explicit methods fail to be energy stable. Our method is an implicit Runge-Kutta method that preserves the energy for inviscid fluid and does not increase the energy for viscous fluid. Integration-by-parts in space is essential to achieve the energy stability, and we could achieve the integration-by-parts in discrete level by using the Marker-And-Cell configuration and central finite differences. The method, which is implicit and second-order accurate, extends our previous method [1] that was explicit and first-order accurate. It satisfies the energy stability and assumes rectangular domains. We acknowledge that the assumption on domains is restrictive, but the method is one of the few methods that are fully stable and second-order accurate.
To simulate the transport of pollutant, a numeric model for the advection-diffusion equation with the decay term is developed. This is finite-difference model using the implicit method (with the weight factor ${\alpha}$) and Gauss-Seidel SOR(successive over-relaxation). This model is compared to the analytical solutions (of simpler dimensional or boundary conditions), and in the condition of Peclet number < 5~20, the result shows stable condition, and Crank-Nicolson method (${\alpha}$=0.5) shows the more accurate results than fully-implicit method (${\alpha}$=1). The mass of advection, diffusion and decay is calculated and the error of mass balance is less than 3%. This model can evaluate the 3-D concentrations of the advection-diffusion and decay problems, but this model uses only the finite-difference method with the fixd grid system, so it can be effectively used in the problems with small Peclet numbers like the pollutant transport in groundwater.
This paper presents a fully three-dimensional numerical approach for analyzing deepwater drilling riser-conductor system vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) including nonlinear soil-structure interactions (SSI). The drilling riser-conductor system is modeled as a tensioned beam with linearly distributed tension and is solved by a fully implicit discretization scheme. The fluid field around the riser-conductor system is obtained by Finite-Analytic Navier-Stokes (FANS) code, which numerically solves the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. The SSI is considered by modeling the lateral soil resistance force according to nonlinear p-y curves. Overset grid method is adopted to mesh the fluid domain. A partitioned fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method is achieved by communication between the fluid solver and riser motion solver. A riser-conductor system VIV simulation without SSI is firstly presented and served as a benchmark case for the subsequent simulations. Two SSI models based on a nonlinear p-y curve are then applied to the VIV simulations. Also, the effects of two key soil properties on the VIV simulations of riser-conductor systems are studied.
Bubble columns are widely encountered in several industries, especially in the field of nuclear safety. The Eulerian-Eulerian and the Eulerian-Lagrangian methods are commonly used to investigate bubble columns. Eulerian approaches require additional tasks such as strict volume conservation at the interface and a predefined well-structured grid. In contrast, the Lagrangian approach can be easily implemented. Hence, we introduce a fully Lagrangian approach for the simulation of bubble columns using the discrete bubble model (DBM) and moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) methods. Additionally, we propose a rigorous method to estimate the volume fraction accurately, and verified it through experimental data and analytical results. The MPS method was compared with the experimental data of Dambreak. The DBM was verified by analyzing the terminal velocity of a single bubble for each bubble size. It agreed with the analytical results for each of the four drag correlations. Additionally, the improved method for calculating the volume fraction showed agreement with the Ergun equation for the pressure drop in a packed bed. The implemented MPS-DBM was used to simulate the bubble column, and the results were compared with the experimental results. We demonstrated that the MPS-DBM was in quantitative agreement with the experimental data.

Recently the micro flows have been received much attention in the applications with regard to Micro Electro Mechanical Systems(MEMS). Such flows are governed by relatively large viscous forces, compared with inetia force, and frequently specified by slip wall boundary conditions. In the present study, computations are applied to investigate the compressible viscous flows through an extremely small channel, and theoretical analyses are conducted using the Fanno flow theory. The axisymmetic, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations are numerically solved by a fully implicit finite implicit method. The predicted results are validated with previous experimental data available. The results obtained show that for small Reynolds numbers, the viscous frictional force significantly influences the compressible micro channel flows.
