  • Military rotorcrafts are constantly exposed to risk from bullet impacts because they operate in a battle environment. Because bullet impact damage can be deadly to crews, the fuel tanks of military rotorcraft must be designed taking extreme situations into account. Fuel tank design factors to be considered include the internal fluid pressure, the structural stress on the part impacted, and the kinetic energy of bullet strikes. Verification testing using real objects is the best way to obtain these design data effectively, but this imposes substantial burdens due to the huge cost and necessity for long-term preparation. The use of various numerical simulation tests at an early design stage can reduce the risk of trial-and-error and improve the prediction of performance. The present study was an investigation of the effects of bullet impacts on a fuel tank assembly using numerical simulation based on SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics), and conducted using the commercial package, LS-DYNA. The resulting equivalent stress, internal pressure, and kinetic energy of the bullet were examined in detail to evaluate the possible use of this numerical method to obtain configuration design data for the fuel tank assembly.

  • Recently, the improvement of fuel economy and the reduction of exhaust smoke and NOx have been successfully achieved by supplying diesel engines with emulsified diesel oil with water particles. In the present paper, the difference between the combustion of injected emulsified fuel and that of diesel oil spray is clarified by means of taking high-speed and color photographs of the flames in the engine cylinder. As the results, the two kinds of fuels show different combustion behavior each other in the growth of initial flame and in the termination of combustion process in the cylinder. Then, suitable combustion chamber design for the use of emulsified fuel is discussed on the basis of experimental data for various distribution of spray in different kinds of piston cavities. Some methods of clearing troubles caused by emulsified fuel injection are also discussed on the basis of performance tests with a remodeling test engine.

  • In this study, combustion experiments were conducted to assess engine performance and exhaust gas characteristics using four blends of 1-pentanol and diesel as fuel in a naturally aspirated 4-stroke diesel engine. The blending ratios of 1-pentanol were 5, 10, 15, and 20% by volume. The experiments were carried out under four different engine torque conditions (6, 8, 10, and 12 Nm) while maintaining a constant engine speed of 2,000 rpm for all fuel types. The results showed that the use of 1-pentanol/diesel blended fuel generally led to a decrease in brake thermal efficiency, attributed to the low calorific value of the blend and the cooling effect due to the latent heat of vaporization. Additionally, both brake specific energy consumption and brake specific fuel consumption increased. However, the use of the blended fuel resulted in a general decrease in NOx concentration, a decrease in CO concentration except some conditions, and a reduction in smoke opacity across all conditions.

  • Because the interaction layers that form between U-Mo particles and the Al matrix degrade the thermal properties of U-Mo/Al dispersion fuel, an investigation was undertaken of the undesirable feedback effect between an interaction layer growth and a centerline temperature increase for dispersion fuel. The radial temperature distribution due to interaction layer growth during irradiation was calculated iteratively in relation to changes in the volume fractions, the thermal conductivities of the constituents, and the oxide thickness with the burnup. The interaction layer growth, which is estimated on the basis of the temperature calculations, showed a reasonable agreement with the post-irradiation examination results of the U-Mo/Al dispersion fuel rods irradiated at the HANARO reactor. The U-Mo particle size was found to be a dominant factor that determined the fuel temperature during irradiation. Dispersion fuel with larger U-Mo particles revealed lower levels of both the interaction layer formation and the fuel temperature increase. The results confirm that the use of large U-Mo particles appears to be an effective way of mitigating the thermal degradation of U-Mo/Al dispersion fuel.

  • The Korean nuclear fuel cycle was modeled by the dynamic analysis method, which was applied to the once-through and alternative fuel cycles. First, the once-through fuel cycle was analyzed based on the Korean nuclear power plant construction plan up to 2015 and a postulated nuclear demand growth rate of zero after 2015. Second, alternative fuel cycles including the direct use of spent pressurized water reactor fuel in Canada deuterium uranium reactors (DUPIC), a sodium-cooled fast reactor and an accelerator driven system were assessed and the results were compared with those of the once-through fuel cycle. The once-through fuel cycle calculation showed that the nuclear power demand would be 25 GWe and the amount of the spent fuel will be ${\sim}65000$ tons by 2100. The alternative fuel cycle analyses showed that the spent fuel inventory could be reduced by more than 30% and 90% through the DUPIC and fast reactor fuel cycles, respectively, when compared with the once-through fuel cycle. The results of this study indicate that both spent fuel and uranium resources can be effectively managed if alternative reactor systems are timely implemented along with the existing reactors.

  • This study focused on the use of orimulsion in industrial combustion systems. Orimulsion is a bitumen-in-water emulsified fuel, which contains a thirty percent water. Orimulsion has relatively high levels of sulfur and nitrogen compared to many fuel oils, and has been the subject of much debate regarding the environmental impacts of its use. The goal of this research is to analyse the effect of flash spray combustion characteristics of orimulsion on NOx and particulate material reduction. For the flash spray of orimulsion, it is heated by $150^{\circ}C$. The effects of fuel heating temperatures on NOx and particulate material emissions were investigated experimentally. As the fuel temperature was increased, NOx and particulate material concentrations in flue gas were decreased.

  • In this paper, the combustion improvement effects of alcohol-diesel oil blend fuel were investigated in a visualization engine. As a result of experiment, it was found out that the combustion chamber of deep dish type and re-entrant type at the same operation condition. However, when the con-tent of alcohol exceeded 10% of total fuel delivery, the combustion of alcohol-diesel oil blend fuel was worse than that of diesel oil. The maximum blend quantity of ethanol which is not ignited in the re-entrant type combustion chamber was estimated at approximately 40% of total fuel delivery. So, it is necessary to blend appropriate quantity of a volatility fuel such as alcohol in order to improve combustion.

  • The CANFLEX fuel bundle has been developed by KAERI/AECL jointly to facilitate the use of various fuel cycles in CANDU-6 reactor. The structural analysis of the fuel bundles by hydraulic drag force is performed to evaluate the fuel integrity during the refuelling service. The present analysis method is newly developed for the structural integrity valuation by studying FEM modelling for the fuel bundles in a fuel channel. As compared the results of the mechanical strength test the displacement value of endplate given by analysis results shoo6 to be good agreement within 15% under the maximum design drag load. As the results of analysis, it is shown to keep the structural integrity of CANFLEX fuel bundles under hydraulic drag load during the refuelling service.

  • The supersonic combustion experiments are carried out using T3 free-piston shock tunnel. Hydrogen Fuel is injected in the cavity parallel with air(or nitrogen fuel) flow. The equivalence ratios in this study are 0.132 and 0.447. Experimental measurements use OH-PLIF near the cavity and pressures in the combustor. For parallel fuel injection case, direct fuel add into cavity leads to increase of cavity pressure. And Flame exists just near the bottom wall for low equivalent ratio. There is no flame in the cavity because of no mixing in it. Compared to the inclined fuel injection, ignition delay length is longer for low equivalence ratio in both case. OH distribution is not a single line but a repeatable fluctuation flame structure by turbulence. Pressure distributions have nothing to do with the fuel injection position.
