  • During the SI engine starting up, starting conditions directly contribute to the harmful emissions in spark ignition engines. The effects of catalyst temperatures and fuel injection skip methods on HC emissions were investigated. The test was conducted on a 1.5L, 4-cylinder, 16 valve, multipoint-port-fuel-injection gasoline engine. To understand the formation of HC emissions, HC concentration was measured in an exhaust port using a Fast Response Flame Ionization Detector(FRFID). The result showed that HC emissions, which were generated during initial stage of the starting, could be reduced by coolant temperature and fuel injection skips. And through the vehicle test of ECE15+EUDC, it is convinced that the optimized fuel injection skip method according to coolant temperatures have favourable effects on the reduction of harmful exhaust emissions including HC during the SI engine start.

  • The simulated spent PWR fuel pellet which is corresponding to the turnup of 33,000 MWD/MTU is prepared by adding 11 fission-product elements to UO$_2$. The simulated spent fuel pellet is treated at 40$0^{\circ}C$ in air (oxidation), at 110$0^{\circ}C$ in air (high-temperature treatment), and at $600^{\circ}C$ in hydrogen (reduction). The product is treated through additional addition and reduction up to 3 cycles. Pellets are completely pulverized by the first oxidation, and the high-temperature treatment causes particle and crystallite to grow and surface to be smooth, and thus particle size significantly increases and surface area decreases. The reduction following the high-temperature treatment decreases much the particle size by means of the formation of intercrystalline cracks. The particle size decreases a little during the second oxidation and reduction cycle and then remains nearly constant during the third and fourth cycles. Surface area of pounder increases progressively with the repetition of oxidation and reduction cycles, mainly due to the formation of Surface cracks. The degradation of surface area resulting from high-temperature treatment is restored by too subsequent resulting oxidation and reduction cycles.

  • Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide has been widely studied by many scientists and researchers. Recently, the production of formic acid, which is expensive but highly useful liquid material, is receiving a great attention. However, difficulties in the electrochemical reduction process and analyzing methods impede the researches. Therefore, it is important to design an adequate system, develop the reduction process and establish the analyzing methods for carbon dioxide reduction to formic acid. In this study, the production of formic acid through electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide was performed and concentration of the product has been analyzed. Large scale batch cell with proton exchange membrane was used in the experiment. The electrochemical experiment has been performed using a series of metal catalysts. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and chronoamperometry were performed for carbon dioxide reduction and electrochemical analysis using silver chloride and platinum electrode as a reference electrode and counter electrode, respectively. The concentration of formic acid generated from the reduction was monitored using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results validate the appropriateness and effectiveness of the designed system and analyzing tool.

  • Electrolytic reduction technology is essential for the purpose of adopting pyroprocessing into spent oxide fuel as an alternative option in a back-end fuel cycle. Spent fuel consists of various metal oxides, and each metal oxide releases an oxygen element depending on its chemical characteristic during the electrolytic reduction process. In the present work, an electrolytic reduction behavior was estimated for voloxidized spent fuel based on the assumption that each metal-oxygen system is independent and behaves as an ideal solid solution. The electrolytic reduction was considered as a combination of a Li recovery and chemical reactions between the metal oxides such as uranium oxide and the produced Li metal. The calculated result revealed that most of the metal oxides were reduced by the process. It was evaluated that a reduced fraction of lanthanide oxides increased with a decreasing $Li_2O$ concentration. However, most of the lanthanides were expected to be stable in their oxide forms. In addition, a semi-empirical model for describing $U_3O_8$ electrolytic reduction behavior was proposed by considering Li diffusion and a chemical reaction between $U_3O_8$ and Li. Experimental data was used to determine model parameters and, then, the model was applied to calculate the reduction yield with time and to estimate the required time for a 99.9% reduction.

  • Our environment is faced with serious problems related to the air pollution from automobiles in these days. In particular, the exhaust emissions of diesel engine are recognized main cause which influenced environment strong, In this study, the potential possibility of biodiesel fuel was investigated as an alternative fuel for a naturally aspirated common rail diesel engine. The smoke emission of biodiesel fuel 5vol-%(min. content) was reduced in comparison with diesel fuel, that is, it was reduced approximately 60% at 4000rpm, full load. But, power, torque and brake specific energy consumption didn't have no large differences. But, NOx emission of biodiesel fuel was increased compared with a commercial diesel fuel. Also, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission has been investigated. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with biodiesel fuel(5vol-%) and cooled EGR method($5{\sim}10%$) in a common rail diesel engine.

  • In general, pulsation damper is installed in fuel rail for conventional MPI engine to decrease undesirable noise in vehicle cabin room. However, pulsation damper is so expensive that there are prevailing studies to reduce fuel pressure pulsations with integrated damping effect. This paper is one of basic studies for development of fuel rail to abate pulsations with self-damping effect. Primarily, the pressure pulsation characteristics was investigated with aspect ratio of cross section, wall thickness, and materials of fuel rail. A high aspect ratio or thin wall was found to absorb the pressure pulsations effectively. But volume effects on the fuel pressure pulsation reductions were not especially significant than cross section effects because volume increment rate is larger than pressure pulsation reduction rate. The fuel rail made of aluminum is effective for reduction of pressure pulsation than that of low-carbon steel. Pressure change period increases on the basis of same lengths of supply line and fuel rail as the volume is enlarged and/or the thickness of wall is thinned.
