  • Fuel processing systems which convert fuel into rich gas (such as stream reforming, partial oxidation, autothermal reforming) need high temperature environment ($600{\sim}1,000^{\circ}$). Generally, anode-off gas or mixture of anode-off gas and LNG is used as input gas of fuel reformer. In order to make efficient and low emission burner system for fuel reformer, it is necessary to elucidate the combustion and emission characteristic of fuel reformer burner. The purpose of this study is to develop a porous premixed flat ceramic burner that can be used for 1~5 kW fuel cell reformer. Ceramic burner experiments using natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas, mixture of natural gas & anode off gas were carried out respectively to investigate the flame characteristics by heating capacity and equivalence ratio. Results show that the stable flat flames can be established for natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas and mixture of natural gas & anode off gas as reformer fuel in the porous ceramic burner. For all of fuels, their burning velocities become smaller as the equivalence ratio goes to the lean mixture ratio, and a lift-off occurs at lean limit. Flame length in hydrogen and anode off gas became longer with increasing the heat capacity. In particular, the blue surface flame is found to be very stable at a very lean equivalence ratio at heat capacity and different fuels. The exhausted NOx and CO measurement shows that the blue surface flame represents the lowest NOx and CO emissions since it remains very stable at a lean equivalence ratio.

  • An inspection of nuclear fuel rods should be performed at remoteness from risks of high level radioactivity, and accuracy is required. Currently, inspection of the nuclear fuel rods is operated to monitor the video that recording an original nuclear fuel rods at remoteness because of the risks of radioactivity. In this paper, it is an implementation of the system was carried out in the process according to the image processing inspection of the nuclear fuel rods. The nuclear fuel rods are configured to use a bundle of plurality, in the image processing technology to verify this, the edge detection method is useful. We suggest to DoG technique to add threshold for the nuclear fuel rod edge detections. This is the new technique that optimized DoG. It is to deal with DoG and threshold to dual process. In this way, after detecting an edge of the nuclear fuel rods, by running a nuclear fuel rod inspection algorithm to determine the status of nuclear fuel rods. We applied the system using the new algorithm, and confirmed an excellent characteristic. In this study, it is considered to be able to be carried out more easily and securely inspect of nuclear fuel rods.

  • A fuel handling process combined with a pressure swing adsorption system (PSA) was simulated to produce pure hydrogen with a purity greater than 99.97%. The simulation consists of two parts. The fuel processing part consisting of reformer and water-gas shift reaction was simulated with Aspen plus®, and the hydrogen purification part consisting of PSA was simulated with Aspen Adsorption®. In this study, the effect of reformer temperature and pressure on the total hydrogen production yield was investigated. Simulations were performed over a temperature range of 700 to 1,000℃ and a pressure range of 1 to 10 bar. The total hydrogen production yield increased with increasing temperature and decreasing pressure. The maximum hydrogen yield was less than 50% in the simulation and will be lower in the real process.

  • Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) have been gaining academic/industrial attention due to the unique high efficiency and minimized pollution emission. SOFCs are an electrochemical system composed of dissimilar materials which operates at relatively high temperatures ranging from 800 to 1000oC. The cell performance is critically dependent on the inherent properties and integration processing of the constituents, a cathode, an electrolyte, an anode, and an interconnect in addition to the sealing materials. In particular, the gas transport, ion transport, and by-product removal also affect the cell performance, in terms of open cell voltages, and cell powers. In particular, the polarization of cathode materials is one of the main sources which affects the overall function in SOFCs. Up to now, there have been studies on the materials design and microstructure design of the component materials. The current work reports the effect of thin film processing on cathode polarization in solid oxide fuel cells. The polarization issues are discussed in terms of dc- and ac-based electrical characterizations. The potential of thin film processing to the applicability to SOFCs is discussed.

  • Numeric characters are printed at the end part of nuclear fuel rod containing nuclear pellets. Fuel rods are discriminated and managed systematically by these characters in the process of producing fuel assembly. The characters are also used to examine manufacturing process of fuel rods in the survey of burnup efficiency as well as in inspection of irradiated fuel rod. Therefore automatic character recognition is one of the most important technologies in automatic manufacture of fuel assembly. In this study, character recognition system is developed. In the developed system, mesh feature extracted from each character written in the fuel rod has been compared with reference feature value stored in database, and the character is thus identified. In the result of experiment, 95.83 percent recognition rate is achievable.

  • A reformer for a small fuel cell system is an apparatus which converts hydrocarbon fuel into hydrogen-rich gas. Among many indices of a reformer, the most crucial index of a reformer is CO concentration in the off-gas out of reformer which must be controled under 5ppm for the efficiency and performance of a system. This paper suggests the criteria of a reformer operation for the stability of a reformer in a fuel cell system by deducing crucial indices and improving processes. The six-sigma technique was applied to verify the optimum control and operation of a reformer of a fuel cell combined heat and power system. The result of temperature control of each parts of a reformer system is the concentration of CO which is the most important factor for the operation of a fuel cell system. The temperature of the parts of a reformer, MTS, LTS and Prox, were controled so that the concentration of CO.

  • In the gasoline engine of fuel injection type, atomization of fuel droplet and its distribution has directly influenced the performance of engine and harmful emission. To investigate atomization characteristics of fuel spray, in this paper fuel spray of air-assisted injector is observed at the various initial conditions of ambient air temperature and air assisted pressure. Behavior of fuel spray is photographed with microscopic visualization system. The SMD of fuel droplet is measured with PMAS (Particle Motion Analysis System). The effect of air-assisted pressure and temperature of ambient air resulted in the decrement of SMD and its variation. Finally, It was found that It was found that from spray angle at the two-hole injector had measured $20{\pm}4$ degree the result of photographs by shadow graphy. The mean diameter of suns decreased and the of droplets increased with increasing the temperature in the spray fields by the results of PMAS measurement. It was found that the characteristics of sprays became finer by increasing the temperature of spray fields about 373K without the delivery of air-assistance.

  • Spray characteristics of a fuel injector have an important effect upon engine power and emission. Thus this study was investigated the spray characteristics of the intermittent injection using a gasoline fuel injector. Image processing system and PDA system were utilized for visualization of a spray behavior and measurements of a droplet size and velocity, respectively. Fuel injection duration was fixed with 3ms and injection pressure was varied such as 250kPa, 300kPa, 350kPa. for a high fuel injection pressure, spray tip arrival time was fluctuated at a vigorously disintegrated cross section. Axial velocity was linear correlated with fuel droplet size in the time interval of an injected main spray at spray downstream.

  • For developing a 100 kW MCFC power generation system, Several design parameters for a fuel cell stack and system analysis results by Cycle Tempo, a processing computer soft ware, were described. Approximately 170 cells are required to generate 100 kW at a current density of 125 mA/$cm^2$ with 6000 $cm^2$ cells. An overall heat balance was calculated to predict exit temperature. The 100 kW power is expected only under pressurized operation condition at 3 atm. Recycle of cathode gas by more than 50% is recommended to run the stack at 125 mA/$cm^2$ and 3 atm. Manifolds should be designed based on gas flow rates for the suggested operating condition. The fuel cell power generation system was designed conceptually with several choices of utilization of anode exhaust gas. Also system efficiency was calculated at various type of system and operation conditions.
