Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) have received a lot of attention as a power source for both stationary and mobile applications due to their attractive feature. In general, the performance of PEFCs is highly affected by the property of the electrodes. A PEFC electrode essentially consists of a gas diffusion layer and a catalyst layer. The gas difusion layer is highly porous and hydrophobicized with PTFE polymer. The catalyst layer usually contains electrocatalyst, proton conducting polymer, even PTFE as additive. Particularly, the proton conducting ionomer helps to increase the catalytic activity at three-phase boundary and catalyst utilization. Futhermore, it helps to retain moisture, resulting in preventing the electrodes from membrane dehydration. The most widely used proton conducting ionomer is perfluorinated sulfonic acid polymer, namely, Nafion from DuPont due to its high proton conductivity and good mechanical property. However, there are great demands for alternative ionomers based on non-fluorinated materials in terms of high temperature availability, environmental adaptability and production cost. In this study, the electrodes with the various content of the sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) ionomer in the catalyst layer were prepared. In addition, we evaluated electrochemical properties of the prepared electrodes containing the various amount of the ionomers by using the cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy to find an optimal ionomer composition in the catalyst layer.

The utilization of sewage sludge for liquid biofuel production is considered as a approach for achieving better energy security, sustainable productivity and economical raw material. Thermochemical technologies of sewage sludge into energy and fuel has been considered as one of the most effective process. Generally, sewage sludge contains more than 80% of moisture, has high metal contents and 14 ~ 20 MJ/kg of calorific value. This paper reviews the technologies of converting sewage sludge to liquid biofuel via three main thermochemical conversion processes namely pyrolysis, transesterification and supercritical. The fuel properties of liquid fuels produced by different technologies from sewage sludge and definition in relevant laws for liquid biofuels in Korea are also discussed.
In this study, characterization and performance of membrane humidifier using membrane distillation was evaluated for moisture of fuel gas in the PEMFC. The data were expressed dew point. The best results show $51.19^{\circ}C$ at $60^{\circ}C$ of water temperature, $54.22^{\circ}C$ at 900 mL/min and $60.03^{\circ}C$ at 100 strands. The mass transfer modelling of membrane humidifier were able to predict humidification of fuel gases for operating PEMFC. When the membrane humidifier was applied to the 100 W stack, it showed stable voltage and power. The volume of membrane humidifier was small however, showed better performance than bubble humidifier.
Recently, densified fuels from biomass are widely used North America and Europe as a regenerable and clean bioenergy. Compaction of sawdust of poplars(Populus tomentiglandulosa and Populus davidiana) with starch glue for densified fuel were studied. Calorific and elemental analysis were carried out to assess these species as fuel. Hot-press process was used and compaction was performed under temperatures from 120 to $160^{\circ}C$ and at pressure of 50kgf/$cm^2$ for prescribed time. Densified fuels were evaluated by its specific gravities, compressive strengths and fines. In the case of with-glue system, when the press temperature is $160^{\circ}C$ and press time is above 7.5 minutes, densified fuels with fines less than 5% can be produced. On the contrary, in the case of without-glue system, densified fuels with fines less than 5% can be produced by controlling the press conditions and the moisture content of sawdust.

This study was purposed to evaluate the characteristic changes of the solidified livestock manure fuel(SLMF) through the application of compression treatment process. The compression process led to an increase of VS/TS ratio (Volatile solids/Total solids ratio) and moisture removal effect of SLMF. The amount of leachate withdrawn from dairy cattle manure and Hanwoo manure by compression were 21~26%(w/w) and 15~20%(w/w), respectively. The specific gravity of the leachate of dairy cattle manure and Hanwoo manure were 1.01 and 0.99, respectively. The dehydrated cow manure was easily processed into ball-shaped solidified fuel. The drying time of the SLMF was proportional to the diameter of the solidified fuel. The highest heating value was observed in diameter range of 10~15mm SLMF. It is concluded that the higher heating value of 10~15mm SLMF was related with the amount of fibrous matter contained in the SLMF.

The drying test was carried on the globular type cow manure pellet for use in solid fuel applications. The globular type cow manure pellet fuel was sorted according to size by rotatory sieves. The three kind of drying methods such as convection hot-air drying method, infrared ray drying method and superheated steam method were used to dry the globular type cow manure pellet. Among the three kind of drying methods, superheated steam method of dry time was the shortest. The apparent specific gravity and low calorific value of dried cow manure pelltes was about $250{\sim}350kg/m^3$ and above 3,000 kcal/kg respectively. The smaller the particle size of cow manure pellets, the less drying time was required. The time was required very less for drying smaller particle size cow manure pellet when compared to larger size. In the case of the same drying condition, it has been found that reducing the particle size of cow manure fuel pellet is an important factor for shortening the drying time of the livestock manure pellet.

The objective of this study was to analyze the changes of crown fire hazard possibility from the effects of forest tending works (FTW) in Pinus densiflora stands in Korea. The study sites were located in Youngju (FTW) and Bonghwa (Control) areas. Ten representative sample trees were destructively felled at each areas to analyze the crown fuel characteristics. The results of this study showed that crown fuel moisture content in Youngju and Bonghwa areas were 103.6% and 104.4%, respectively. The needles and twigs with less than 1cm diameter accounted 50.3% of the total crown fuel load in Youngju area and 62.0% in Bonghwa area. On the other hand, it was observed in Youngju that the canopy bulk density was $0.11kg/m^3$ lower but have 1.3 m higher average canopy base height therefore having a possibility of lower crown fire hazard as compared to Bonghwa that had higher canopy bulk density and lower canopy base height.
Numerical simulations of the condition in the iron ore sintering bed are performed for various parameters. The sintering bed is modelled as an unsteady one-dimensional progress of solid material, containing cokes and iron ore. Bed temperature, solid mass and gas species distributions are predicted for various parameters of moisture contents, cokes contents and air suction rates, along with the various particle diameters of the solid for sensitivity analysis. Calculation results show that influences of these parameters on the bed condition should be carefully evaluated for achievement of the self-sustaining combustion without the high temperature section, which can cause the excessive melting in the bed. It suggests that the model should be extended to consider the bed structural change and multiple solid phase, which can treat the inerts and fuel particles separately.
