  • In this study, hindered amine-grafted graphene oxide (HA-GO) with antioxidant properties was prepared and incorporated into Nafion-based composite membranes as an effective filler material for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell applications. HA-GO was synthesized via a ring-opening reaction between amine groups in 4-amino-2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl piperidine and epoxy groups on the surface of GO. Nafion-based composite membranes containing different weight contents of HA-GO were fabricated to compare the polymer electrolyte membrane properties with those of the pure Nafion membrane. The composite membranes with HA-GO were found to have better mechanical properties, chemical stability, and proton conductivity than the pure Nafion membrane. In particular, the conductivity retention behavior confirmed by the decrease in proton conductivity after Fenton's test of the composite membranes was better than that of the pure Nafion membrane due to the incorporation of HA-GO with effective antioxidant properties.

  • Material characteristics and lifetime evaluation are very important in design procedure to assure the safety and reliability of the rubber components. In this paper, the NBR compound was prepared by sulfur-cure system, and was used in predicting the lifetime of rubber gasket made by the compound. The accelerated material aging was investigated at different temperatures at 120, 140 and $160^{\circ}C$ and aging time from 3 hours to 600 hours at 5, 6, 7 vol %. of $H_2SO_4$ concentrations The rubber strips were placed in acid solution using pyrex g1ass tube. Both ends of pyrex g1ass tube were sealed to avoid evaporation of solution during heating at given time. The material test and accelerated acid-heat aging test were carried out to predict the useful life of NBR rubber gasket for a fuel cell stack. In order to investigate the effects of acid-heat aging on the properties of the NBR, tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness and crosslink-density were measured. The tensile strength decreases as the $H_2SO_4$ concentrations and temperature increase. Results were evaluated using Arrhenius equation.

  • The paper presents the rotordynamic performance measurements and model predictions of a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) air compressor supported on gas foil bearings (GFBs). The rotor has an impeller on one end and a thrust runner on the other end. The front (impeller side) and rear (thrust side) gas foil journal bearings (GFJBs) are located between the impeller and thrust runner to support the radial loads, and a pair of gas foil thrust bearings are located on both sides of the thrust runner to support the axial loads. The test GFJBs have a partial arc shim foil installed between the top foil and bump strip layers to enhance hydrodynamic pressure generation. During the rotordynamic performance tests, two sets of orthogonally installed eddy-current displacement sensors measure the rotor radial motions at the rotor impeller and thrust ends. A series of speed-up and coast-down tests to 100k rpm demonstrates the dominant synchronous (1X) rotor responses to imbalance masses without noticeable subsynchronous motions, which indicates a rotordynamically stable rotor-GFB system. Finite element analysis of the rotor determines the rotor free-free (bending) natural modes and frequencies well beyond the maximum rotating frequency. The predicted damped natural frequencies and damping ratios of the rotor-GFB system reveal rotordynamic stability over the speeds of interest. The imbalance response predictions show that the predicted critical speeds and rotor amplitudes strongly agree with the test measurements, thus validating the developed rotordynamic model.

  • The purpose of this paper is to improve the performance of Polymer electrolyte fuel cell(PEMFC) by studying the channel dimension of bipolar plates using commercial CFD program 'Fluent'. Simulations are done ranging from 0.5 to 3.0mm for different size in order to find the channel size which shoves the highst hydrogen consumption. The results showed that the smaller channel width, land width, channel depth, the higher hydrogen consumption in anode. When channel width is increased, the pressure drop in channel is decreased because total channel length Is decreased, and when land width is increased, the net hydrogen consumption is decreased because hydrogen is diffused under the land width. It is also found that the influence of hydrogen consumption is larger at different channel width than it at different land width. The change of hydrogen consumption with different channel depth isn't as large as it with different channel width, but channel depth has to be small as can as it does because it has influence on the volume of bipolar plates. however the hydrogen utilization among the channel sizes more than 1.0mm which can be machined in reality is the most at channel width 1.0, land width 1.0, channel depth 0.5mm and considered as optimum channel size. The fuel cell combined with 2cm${\times}$2cm diagonal or serpentine type flow field and MEA(Membrane Electrode Assembly) is tested using 100W PEMFC test station to confirm that the channel size studied in simulation. The results showed that diagonal and serpentine flow field have similarly high OCV and current density of diagonal (low field is higher($2-40mA/m^2$) than that of serpentine flow field under 0.6 voltage, but the current density of serpentine type has higher performance($5-10mA/m^2$) than that of diagonal flow field under 0.7-0.8 voltage.

  • The separator for a molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) is mode of stainless steel and known to the suscepibility to corrosion due to environments of high temperature molten carbonte electrolyte. Considering the sensitization of stainless steel in the temperature range of 425~$815^{\circ}C$, the separator is expected to be sensitized so that the interganular corrosion (IGC) occurs during the cell operation at about $650^{\circ}C$. In this study, EPR(electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation) technique was examined by relating some elements(mainly C and Cr) to the degree of sensitization of austenitic stainless steels in the molten carbonate salt at $650^{\circ}C$and the possible mechanism of intergranular corrosion was analyzed.

  • In the detail reaction-rate measurements in a critical assembly using the foil activation method, the measured activations of detector foils have inevitably errors caused by detector foil self-shielding effect. If neutron flux could be approximated to Westcott flux: i.e. well thermalized Maxwellian distribution, these activations of detector foil could be corrected to represent the unperturbated flux at any detected position in the cell with using Westcott option and reaction-rate option of the lattice code, WIMS-AECL. These calculated detector material self-shielding correction factors of the tested fuel, CANFLEX provided much information about neutron spectrum of test lattice cell as well as the correction factors themselves. The results could be verified by another lattice calculations.

  • Proton conducting oxides based on the $BaCe_{0.9}M_{0.1}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (M = La, AL) were tested for the alternative electrolyte materials of fuel cell. The power density for single cell of Air |Pt| $BaCe_{0.9}M_{0.1}O_{3-{\delta}}$ |Pt| $H_2(3%H_2O)$ system was maximum $0.04W/cm^2$ at $1000^{\circ}C$. In this system, proton transport number was proved to depend on the lattice parameters and the distortion of $CeO_6$ octahedral as a function of the ionic radii of acceptor ions. This proton conducting oxide system requires developing the new electrode materials for application.

  • This paper presents the procedure of drag prediction for EAV-1, based on a numerical analysis correlated to an in-flight test. EAV-1, developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute, is a small-sized UAV to test a hydrogen-fuel cell power system. The long-endurance test flight of 4.5 hours provides numerous in-flight data. The thrust and drag of EAV-1 during the flight test are estimated based on the wind-tunnel test results for EAV-1's propeller performance. In addition, the CFD analysis using a commercial Navier-Stokes code is carried out for the full-scale EAV-1. The computational result suggests that the initial CFD analysis substantially under-predicts the in-flight drag in that the discrepancy is up to 27.6%. Therefore, additional investigation for more accurate drag prediction is performed; the effect of propeller slipstream is included in the CFD analysis through "fan disk" modelling. Also, the additional drag from airplane trim and load factor that actually exists during the flight test in a circular path is considered. These supplemental analyses for drag prediction turn out to be effective since the drag discrepancy reduces to 2.3%.

  • Owing to revolutionary developments in automobile technologies, a variety of advanced vehicles - hybrid vehicle, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, electric vehicle, etc. - emerges recently. The safety is getting more important for developing automobiles. The electro-magnetic compatibility has to be assured, since those advanced vehicles are equipped with various new electronic systems. Electro-magnetic compatibility tests, in general, consist of an EMI(electro-magnetic interference) test and an EMS (electro-magnetic susceptibility) test. We investigated the susceptibility test method suggested in KMVSS (Korean Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) as the EMS test method. A series of experiments results that the above test method should be partially revised to comply with a Korean governmental standard method. In this paper, the some directions of modifications are presented to enhance the quality of the above EMS test method.

  • Fuel cells have attracted enormous interest as new power sources because the cells can be used to solve the problem of environmental pollution as well as the natural-resource exhaustion problem. In this study, hydrogen-gas flow in microchannels of different shapes was numerically analyzed to improve the efficiency of a microfuel cell. Flow characteristics in six microchannels of different shapes but under identical boundary conditions were simulated. The analysis result shows that the flow characteristics such as velocity, uniformity, and flow rate, greatly depend upon the channel shape. This implies that the efficiency of microfuel cell can be expected to be increased by adopting the optimal configuration of channel shape for hydrogen-gas flow. The experimental results show that power density of a PEMFC with a microflow channel is higher than that of a PEMFC without a microflow channel; however, a durable catalyst is required in MEA.
