Mushrooms are considered not only as food but also for source of physiologically beneficial medicines. The culinary-medicinal mushrooms may important role in the prevention of age-associated neurological dysfunctions, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Hericium erinaceus (H. erinaceus), is edible mushrooms, is a parasitic fungus that grows hanging off of logs and trees and well established candidate for brain and nerve health. H. erinaceus contains high amounts of antioxidants, beta-glucan, polysaccharides and a potent catalyst for brain tissue regeneration and helps to improve memory and cognitive functions. Its fruiting bodies and the fungal mycelia exhibit various pharmacological activities, including the enhancement of the immune system, antitumor, hypoglycemic and anti-aging properties. H. erinaceus stimulates the synthesis of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) which is the primary protein nutrient responsible for enhancing and repairing neurological disorders. Especially hericenones and erinacines isolated from its fruitin body stimulate NGF, synthesis. This fungus is also utilized to regulate blood levels of glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol. H. erinaceus can be considered as useful therapeutic agents in the management and/or treatment of neurodegeneration diseases. However, this review focuses on in vitro, in vivo and clinical trials for neurodegerative disease.
This experiment was carried out to examine physiological and cultural characteristics of two strains ASI 19003, 'Poplar field-cap mushroom' Agrocybe cylindracea, and ASI 19016, 'Chaxingo' A. chaxingu, at the bottle cultivation which have very similar morphological characteristics in genus Agrocybe. There was significant difference between the physiological and cultural characteristics of ASI19003 and ASI19016. The optimal temperature for the hyphal growth was $28^{\circ}C$ in the strain ASI19003 and $30^{\circ}C$ in ASI19016. The optimal pH was not different in two strains and these strains grew well at pH 5.5~7.0. But the optimal pH in the submerged culture was 5.5 in ASI19003 and 5.0 in ASI19016. Especially, hyphal growth of the strain ASI19016 was very poor at pH 6.0~7.3. The optimal carbon source for the growth was lactose in the strain ASI19003 and fructose in ASI19016, and nitrate sources were asparagine, alanine, and glycine in the strain ASI19003, and ammonium tartrate, asparagine, glycine, and alanine in ASI19016, respectively. The periods of incubation and fruiting body formation in the bottle cultivation during the spring were 27 and 13 days in the strain ASI19003, 29 and 17 days in ASI19016. The yields of fruit body were 114 g per bottle (850 $m{\ell}$ volume) in the strain ASI19003 and 100 g in ASI19016. In the summer, the periods of hyphal incubation and fruiting body formation were 29 and 11 days in the strain ASI19003, 30 and 12 days in ASI19016. The color of the cap in the ASI19003 strain according to temperature increase during the fruit body development become more pale, but the strain ASI19016 kept dark color relative to ASI19003. The fruiting body formation of the strain ASI19016 was faster than that of ASI19003. Accordingly, the cultivation of A. cylindracea ASI19003 during the spring, fall and winter, and A. chaxingu ASI19016 during the summer can keep high quality and stable supply all year round of these mushrooms.

These studies were carried out to develop an artificial cultivation method. The diameter and thickness of pileus ranged $1.5{\sim}7.0\;cm$ and $0.8{\sim}3.0\;cm$, respectively. The diameters of stipe were $1.2{\sim}2.5\;cm$ and the lengthes were $4.5{\sim}9.0\;cm$. The spore fingerprint was white. The sizes were spore $10.8{\sim}12.2{\times}4.35{\sim}5.65\;{\mu}m$, basidia $50.0{\sim}59.2{\times}7.4{\sim}7.8\;{\mu}m$, nalsistidia $21.75{\sim}28.7{\times}4.8{\sim}6.1\;{\mu}m$, pileus hymenium cell $50.6{\sim}66.0{\times}4.4{\sim}6.7\;{\mu}m$, and stipe hymenium cell $28.6{\sim}33.0{\times}5.5{\sim}6.6\;{\mu}m$. The thirty percent mixture of rice and wheat bran into sawdust gives the high density of mycelia and the good development of fruiting structure. The optimum water contents of sawdust substrates were $60{\sim}65%$ in which condition the mycelium grows well and gives high density. In PP bottle cultivation, the first fruiting period was $6{\sim}8$ days earlier in nonscratching samples than scratching ones, but the quantity of fruiting body was higher in scratching samples than nonscratching ones. In the case of PP bag cultivation, the first fruiting was 10 days faster, and the quantity of fruiting bodies was 30% higher in samples with 30% wheat bran than those with rice bran. The fleshiness of stipe was $2{\sim}3$ times harder than that of pileus.

'Miso', a new variety of oyster mushroom was developed for the bottle culture at the Chungnam Agricultural Research & Extension Services. Its mycelium grew rapidly with $8.4{\sim}8.6\;mm/day $ at $25{\sim}28^{\circ}C$ on PDA medium. The optimum pH of the mycelial growth was pH 5.0. It took 24 days for the primitive primordium formation after inoculation on pine sawdust media mixed with 20% wheat bran. Fruiting body color was white, and the shape of pileus was convex-umbonate. In the bottle culture, the yield was 115.7 g per 850 ml bottle. Stipe length was about 54 mm, the number of stipe per bottle was 18.1, the size of pileus was 28 mm, and gill was crowded. The moisture content of 'Miso' was lower than that of Jangan No.5 and Wonhyeong No.1, and contents of protein, ash and sugar of 'Miso' were higher than those of other varieties, and tannin acid content of 'Miso' was lower than that of others. On the basis of AFLP analysis, the 'Miso' was distinct not only from Wonhyeong No.1, but also from their closest relative, oyster mushrooms.

King oyster mushroom(Pleurotus eryngii) is one of the most commercially important mushrooms in Korea. Development of fruit body and disease occurrence are sensitive to environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide(CO2) concentration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the growth environment of king oyster mushroom by installing Airocide, an air purifier for the purpose of improving mushroom cultivation environment. The results of the environment conditions, identification of pathogenic organisms and pathogenesis during the cultivation were as follows. Airocide operation increased the CO2 concentration of the cultivation room by more than 400 ppm on average, but the increase of CO2 concentration at this level had little effect on the quality and growth of fruit body. Operation of the Airocide tended to reduce the air humidity of the cultivation room and required more humidification. In humidifying conditions, the Airocide has the effect of lowering the species and density of bacteria and reducing bacterial symptoms and abnormal fruiting body of mushroom. Pseudomonas sp., the mushroom pathogen, was isolated from the cultivation room without Airocide, resulting in serious disease and loss of yields, so that only about 83% of substrate could harvest normal fruiting bodies. No disease symptom caused by bacteria and fungi in the cultivation room with Airocide. Trichoderma sp., Penicillium sp. and Cladosporium sp. were isolated from all experimental conditions, but did not inhibit fruit growth or caused diseased.
A GAL4 type transcription factor gene (formally annotated as AN3912) locating downstream of sndA (AN3911) was characterized. The putative transcription factor carries both Zn(II)2Cys6 binuclear cluster DNA-binding domain and transcription activator domain. The gene named gtfA (gal4 type transcription factor) had an open reading frame which consisted of 762 amino acids and was disrupted by three introns. The deletion mutant produced reduced amount of conidia but increased amount of fruiting bodies, suggesting that the GtfA make function in decision of asexual preferential to sexual development. The forced over expression of gtfA caused the retardation of fruiting body formation on high glucose concentration. The transcript level of gtfA was kept constant through the life cycle except late vegetative stage and early sexual development stage during which slight increase was found. The expression of gtfA was not significantly affected by sexual or asexual development regulators, such as VeA, NsdD or FluG, FadA, and SfaD. The GtfA repressed the nsdC transcription, which suggested that GftA control sexual development negatively via negative regulation of nsdC expression.

A edible mushroom, Hypsizygus marmoreus is commercially cultivated. However, the researches of cultivation and physiological characteristics were not conducted in Korea. In this study, we conducted on artificial cultivation of H. marmoreus and elucidated the effect of light on the mycelial growth and fruit body development using LED light sources with different wavelength; blue (peak wave length 460nm), green(peak wave length 530nm), yellow(peak wave length 590nm), red(peak wave length 630nm), and white as positive control. Mycelial growth of H. marmoreus strains were inhibited about 30~40% in inhibition ratio under the illumination with blue, green, yellow LED light. However, red LED light was not inhibited. Elongation of stipe was effective under the long wave length such as yellow and red light. Abnormal fruit body was produced under the long wavelength and dark. However, development of pileus was effective under the short wavelength such as green and blue light. Also, as a result of cultivation with mixed light for high quality and harvest, many effective numbers and yields of fruiting bodies were obtained in the mixed treatment of blue and white light, and pileus developed well.
Interspecific somatic hybrids were obtained by protoplast fusion between Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus sajor-caju. The fusion products between incompatible strains did not form clamp connections. Fruiting body of the clampless fusants was induced by light-dark cycle on saw-dust-rice bran substrate in glass bottles. Out of them, seven somatic hybrids produced fruiting bodies of intermediate morphology of the two species. Light and low temperature were the initiating factors for the development of clamped hyphae from the clampless mycelial colonies. All of these basidiocarps had clamp connections. Eight fusants from the six crosses were analysed with the segregation of genetic characters by random spore isolates. In the three combinations, unexpected alleles were shown. Somatic hybrid between P188 (P. ostreatus 2-1 + P. sajor-caju 2-53) and P. florida 2-3 by triple cross produced fruiting bodies similar to those of fusant between P. ostreatus and P. florida. All the genetic charaters from the three strains were shown to segregate and recombine.
For the searching of antibiotics in the mushroom, we studied on the screening of antiyeast and antifungal components. The powder of fruiting body of each mushroom was extracted with petroleum ether, 80% ethanol, and distilled water in that order, respectively. The antifungal activity of each extract from 32 different mushrooms were tested. The petroleum ether or ethanol extracts from fruiting bodies of Boletus auripes, Leccinum extremiorientale, Gomphus floccosus, Phaeolus schweinitzii, Pycnoporus cinnabarinus and Marasmius maximus showed antiyeast activities. The ethanol extract of Gyrophora esculenta showed an antiyeast activity against Cryptococcus neoformans, and its minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was $600\;{\mu}g/ml$. The petroleum ether or ethanol extracts from fruiting bodies of Amanita citrina, Leccinum extremiorientale, Gomphus floccosus, Phaeolus schweinitzii, Pycnoporus cinnabarinus, Marasmius maximus and Gyrophora esculenta showed antifungal activities. The ethanol extract of Gomphus floccoscus showed an antifungal activity against Microsporum gypseum, and its MIC was $1,000\;{\mu}g/ml$. The ethanol extract of Gyrophora esculenta showed antifungal activities against Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Microsporum gypseum and Pyricularia oryzae, and theirs MIC were $300\;{\mu}g/ml,\;600\;{\mu}g/ml\;and\;600\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The petroleum ether extract of Gyrophrora esculenta also showed an antifungal activity against Microsporum gypseum, and its MIC was $300\;{\mu}g/ml$.
Cordyceps militaris(CM) has been used as a traditional folk medicine to strengthen the immune system and regain energy for hundreds of years in Far East Asian countries. In the present studies, we determined that the stimulatory effect of Cordyceps militaris on testosterone production in male mouse rats. Results illustrated that changes of the body weight, food and water intake of the rats were not observed in this study but the concentration of testosterone in the serum of the rats was significantly increased by CM(p < 0.05). Therefore fruiting bodies of CM grown on the drone bee medium may be an integrative medicine for the treatment of reproductive problems caused by insufficient testosterone levels in human males.
