Two species of Phytophthora were isolated from infected fruits of jujube. Among 18 isolates collected, 6 were identified as P. nicotianae and 12 as P. patmivora on the basis of their mycological characteristics. The former produced no caduceus, ovoid to spherical sporangia in contrast to caduceus, ellipsoid, and broadly avoid to spherical ones of the latter. These two species were shown to be heterothallic and markedly papilate, chlamydospores abundant, and Al mating type. They skewed strong pathogenicity to fruits of jujube and pear while no symptom was produced on apple fruit by artificial inoculation. This is the first report of juiube fruit rot caused by P. ninotianae and P. palmivora in Korea.

Antifungal and antioxidative activities of Phellodendron amurense extracts were investigated for use as a natural preservative. After separation of P. amurense into phloem, xylem, leaf and fruit each part was subjected to methanol extraction. Each MeOH extract was further fractionated with several solvents(n-hexane, methylene chloride and ethylacetate). Among the methanol extracts, extracts of phloem and leaf inhibited effectively the growth of mold fungi and rot fungi, respectively. Especially, ethylacetate fraction from phloem showed the highest growth inhibitory effects against fungi tested, such as P. citreonigrum H3, P. toxicarium H4, P. corylophilu H5, A. clavatus, P. osteatus, S. commune, and G. lucidum. The fractions of fruit, which had lower antifungal activities mostly than those of phloem, strongly inhibited rot fungi such as G. lucidum, T. versicolor, and T. palustris. Compared to ferulic acid which is well known antioxidant, ethylacetate fraction of fruit showed high antioxidative activities on concentration of 1 to $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ in DPPH radical scavenging activity. As a result, antifungal and antioxidative activities of P. amurense suggest that its extract and fraction have a possibility as conservative of cultural heritage because it might get conservation effects against deteriorating microorganisms of cultural heritage.
A severe pink mold rot on matured asian pear (Pyrus serotina Rehder) fruit occurred in the organic farmers' orchard in Jinju, Korea in October, 2012. Decay of pear fruit appeared as a softened water-soaked symptom that was easily punctured by pressure. Later pink mycelium appeared on the surface of pear fruit and produced a mass of powdery pink conidia spores. Optimum temperature for mycelial growth of T. roseum was $25^{\circ}C$. Conidia showed hyaline, smooth, 2-celled, thick-walled with truncate bases, ellipsoidal to pyriform, and characteristically held together zig-zag chains and $10{\sim}22(34){\times}6{\sim}10(12){\mu}m$ in size. Conidiophore was erect, colorless, unbranched type, and 4-5 ${\mu}m$ width. On the basis of mycological characteristics, pathogenicity test, and molecular identification with the ITS region, the causal fungus was identified as Trichothecium roseum (Pers.) Link ex Gray.
For the eco-friendly control of fruit rot of fig, disease incidences according to the cultural practices at 51 fig orchards in south coast area of Korea were surveyed in 2002, and the effect of soil mulch and potassium phosphonate on fruit rot of fig was evaluated from 2002 to 2004. Diseased fruits of fig orchards of open field, rain shading, and vinyl house were 33.3%, 7.5%, and 0%, respectively. Diseased fruits were rated at 34.6%, 35.7%, and 27% as the tree spacing of $2m{\times}2m,\;2m{\times}3m,\;and\;3m{\times}4m$, respectively. Among the soil mulching materials, barley straw showed disease incidence of 1.8% and 3.5% of diseased fruits compared to 42.1% and 48% of no mulching in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Diseased fruits in dark paper film mulching were recorded at 4.8% and 12% in 2002 and 2003, respectively, which were lower than those in dark polyethylene film mulching at 11.2% and 26.2%. When potassium phosphonate(1,000 ppm) was sprayed 3 times with 10 days intervals from the beginning of disease occurrence, disease incidences were rated at 3.0% and 2.0% in 2003 and 2004, respectively, which were much lower than those of control at 45.9 % and 39.3%.
Pre-penetration behavior of Boytryosphaeria dothidea on apple fruits was investigated with scanning electron microscopy. Once conidia were deposited on the fruit surface, they germainted and produced germ tubes from one or both ends of the conidia. Germ tubes grew over the fruit surface and entered the fruits through lenticels or surface cracks formed naturally. Germ tubes of the fungus also appeared to penetrated the fruits directly with or without forming appressoria. Globose appressoria were frequently formed at the tip of germ tubes on the fruit surface, where no lenticels or surface cracks were found. The conidia collapsed and became flattened to the fruit surface after appressorial formation. Cuticles of fruit surface underneath appressoria and tips of some germ tubes were evidently altered, indicating possibility of direct penetration of the fungus by enzymatic degradation of the cuticle layers. This the first report on the formation of appressoria by B. dothidea.

As a result of contemporary environmental concerns, a number of studies from plants' tissues as one of the alternatives to conventional chemicals are increasingly investigated. In tandem with these trends, Lagenaria breviflora (LB) fruit, reputed as antiviral and depilatory agents in the Yoruba folkloric medicine was examined on Vitex doniana wood to ascertain its antifungal activity. Fungicides of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% LB fruits formulations (concentrations) were developed through simple one-step mechanical-forming process, including control. In this study, the yield, the chemical compositions, the absorption capacity of the fungicides and wood weight losses (WWL) analysis were evaluated to investigate the antifungal activity of LB fruit on wood. The fruit extract yielded 35.4% of fresh juice weight. LB fruits contained total: alkaloids ($8.78{\pm}0.21mg/mL$), flavonoids ($2.01{\pm}0.02mg/mL$), phenol ($7.42{\pm}0.09mg/mL$), saponins ($11.00{\pm}0.10mg/mL$) and tannins ($5.47{\pm}0.05mg/mL$) contents. All the formulations provided effective protection against the tested wood fungi compared to control. Interestingly, the antifungal activity of 50% and 25% formulations of 6.8% WWL and 9.9% WWL satisfied the excellent fungal resistance class description against white rot fungus (Ganoderma lucidum) and brown rot fungus (Fibroporia vaillantii), respectively according to ASTM D 2017. These results thus, support LB fruit as a strong potential source of natural antifungals for industrial wood production.

'Mansoo' is a late-season pear cultivar with extra large and high quality fruit of long storability, which was released by National Horticultural Research Institute in 1995. The cultivar originated from the cross between 'Danbae' and 'Okusankichi' at Suwon in 1978, had been under regional adaptability test at nine areas in the name of 'Wonkyo Na-15' for 4 years since 1992. It was vigorous in tree growth and upright in tree shape. Its flower bud is easily maintained, resulting in higher productivity than 'Danbae' and 'Okusankichi'. It bloomed a day later than 'Niitaka', and showed cross-compatibility with 'Niitaka', 'Chojuro' and some other varieties. Harvesting time of 'Mansoo' is late October in Suwon. The fruit shape is oblate and skin color is light yellowish brown. The fruit weighed 600-700 g and has 12-13% soluble solids content. The flesh is soft, juicy, and has negligible grit. It is resistant to black leaf rot (Alternaria kikuchiana Tanaka).
Control of white rot which is one of the most serious apple diseases in Korea has mainly relied on periodical spray of protective fungicides. As the main inoculum source of the disease is pycnidiospores produced in the warts formed on affected stems of apple tree, it can be conceivable that inhibition of spore production might be an effective means for controlling the disease. Inhibitory efficacy of eight selected fungicides against sporulation of the fungus was assessed by counting the number of spores produced at detached warts treated with the fungicides of recommended dilution. They showed diverse effect on sporulation. Carbendazim and azoxystrobin suppressed sporulation almost completely, the former irreversively. Thiram and folpet promoted sporulation as producing much more number of spores than untreated control. Others showed almost no effect on sporulation. Effects of suppression and promotion in the sporulation shown by the fungicides on the control of white rot were examined by incidences of disease and infection at the plots adopted the spray programs of which the fungicide at late May was substituted by carbendazim, azoxystrobin, folpet and thiram, respectively. Disease incidence and infection frequency at the plots sprayed former two chemicals which suppressed sporulation were much lower than those of the plots adopted latter two chemicals and untreated plot at which the fungicide spray was skipped at that time. These facts were reconfirmed in the experiments conducted with carbendazim and thiram, in which 100 fruits were bagged just prior to each spray from late May to late July for elucidating the effect of the two fungicides on the action of subsequent ones. Disease incidence and infection frequency on the fruit bagged just prior to each spray were gradually increased as the seasons going on. The increase rate at the carbendazim plot was much lower than that of thiram. Especially, the fruit infected till late July at the carbendazim plot were almost completely cured by the three fungicides, iminoctadine-triacetate, tebuconazole and samzinwang, a combined formular of iminoctadine-triacetate and difenoconazole, sprayed at late July and hence. In thiram plot, infected fruit were also cured by the 3 fungicides but not remarkable. From these results, it can be concluded that control efficiency of white rot can be greatly enhanced by selecting the fungicide capable of suppress the sporulation of white rot fungus at the season when the mass dispersal of spores is not initiated.
A Rhizopus soft rot caused by Rhizopus stolonifer occurred on Momordica charantia at Daesan-myon, Chang-won city, Gyeongnam province from 2003 to 2005. The disease usually started from wound on fruit with water-soaking lesions. The lesion rapidly expanded and softened. The fungal mycelia grew vigorously and sporangia, sporangiophores, and stolons were formed on surface of the fruit. Spoyangiophores were $15\~30{\mu}m$ in width. Sporangia were globose or hemispheric and $90\~180{\mu}m$ in size. The color of sporangia was white and cottony at first and turned to brownish black with many spores at maturity. Columella were hemispheric and $80\~150{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiospores were irregular round or oval, brownish-black streaked and $7\~18{\times}6\~12{\mu}m$ in size. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth of the fungus on PDA was $25^{\circ}C$. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to host plants, the causal fungus was identified as Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenberg ex. Fr,) Lind. This is the first report of Rhizopus soft rot on M. charantia caused by R. stolonifer in Korea.

For Selection of powerful antagonistic bacteria for biological control of soil borne Erwinia rhapontici causing rot of the vegetables and fruit, excellent straints (S43, S62) were selected from rhizopere in vegetables root rot suppressive soil. Selected strains were identified to be Pseudomonas sp. with Apl 20NE kit tests. Optimum culture condition for the maximum production of antagonistic substance was determined , when isolate was cultured in 523 synthetic broth media at pH 7.0 and 30 during 3 days. Antagonistic substance productivity of isolated Pseudomonas sp. (S43, S62) in the fertilizer soil were increased to about 40-50% compared to that in the non fertilizer soil.
