Relationship between Snack Consumption Patterns and Socio-Economic Status and Oral Health Behavior in Samcheok-Si Children (삼척시 유아의 보호자 사회경제적 지위 및 구강보건행태에 따른 간식 섭취 실태의 관련성)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship among snack consumption patterns, Socio-Economic Status(SES) and oral health behavior in Samcheok-si children. We surveyed oral health behaviors, SES, and snack consumption patterns of children from guardians of three kindergartens in Samcheok-si. There were 148 representative samples who completed the survey sheet. Chi-square test and logistic regression were conducted by SAS 9.2 survey data analysis procedure. The result of relationship between sugar snack intake frequency and house income, and caregiver's education years were significantly different (p<.05). Also, Soda consumption frequency and mother's age, and house income were significantly different (p<.05). The relationship between toothbrushing children by caregiver and fruit consumption frequency were significantly different (p<.05). Fruit consumption and caregiver's education years were associated. Also, soda intake frequency and candy reward were associated with caregiver's age and education years respectively. We found that snack intake behavior of the Samcheok-si children was not associated with their oral health behavior.

Study of Food Intakes and Eating Patterns among Preschool Children in Daegu Area - Assessment of Dietary Pattern and Dietary Diversity - (대구지역 유아들의 식사 및 식생활 형태 조사 - 식품 섭취패턴 및 식사다양성 평가 -)

  • This study was conducted to assess dietary pattern and dietary diversity of preschool children by investigating their food consumption. To accomplish this, dietary intake survey (24 hour-recall food diary) was administered to 508 children aged between 4 to 6 years old from 4 kindergartens in the Daegu area (415 were completed). By using CAN pro 3.0 for professionals, the dietary patterns and dietary diversity scores of each food group were examined by age and sex. Data were analyzed with SPSS 12.0, and $\chi^2$, t-test and Anova test, and Duncan's multiple range test used for verifying significance. For 4~5-year-old group, boys had significantly more fruit and meats than girls (p < 0.05), but girls had more dairy food than boys with no significance. For 6-year-old group, boys had significantly more foods, milk and dairy foods than girls (p<0.05), and also boys had more vegetables and fruit than girls with no significance. For DDS (Dietary Diversity Score), the score of 6-year-old group was significantly higher than that of younger children (p < 0.05) and the older the age was, the higher the score was. Dietary Pattern (GMVFD) was verified by 8 types, and the ratio of taking all five food groups (GMVFD = 11111) of the 6-year-old group was 48.8%. Children with older ages had more various foods than younger ones (p < 0.05). In addition, the ratio of taking less than the minimal intake of dairy foods of girls (48.1%) was higher than that of boys (41.3%). As results, unbalanced diet, overeating and not eating unbalanced diet were revealed as the problematic dietary habits among preschool children, and those habits may change positively with knowledge on nutrition grow on. Therefore, nutritional characteristics and importance of preschool children should be taught to parents and caregivers, and it must be practical and ready to use in cooking for these children to healthy dietary habits.

Association of Health Indicators with Excessive Television Viewing among Elementary School Students in Seoul, Korea (서울시 초등학생의 과잉 텔레비전 시청과 관련된 건강지표)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate prevalence and ecological characteristics of excessive television viewing among elementary school students in Seoul. Methods: Secondary data, representative sample of 11,082 subjects in Seoul was used. After prevalence of the excessive television viewing was identified by using factor analysis, 6 main factors explaining the ecological indicators was founded. After identifying prevalence of the excessive television viewing, by using factor analysis, we found 6 main factors explaining the ecological indicators. After categorizing factors into socio-psychological and lifestyle characteristics, we were investigated the odds ratio of excessive television viewing per characteristics by using multiple logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of excessive television viewing was 29.7% among the elementary school student in Seoul. The prevalence were higher in male, higher grade, and non-South of the Han River. Socio-psychological indicators which expressed excessive television viewing were annoying or bullying, scolding from teacher, depressed mode, thought for a runaway from home, an experience of diet, and negative body image. Life style indicators were a lower intake of fruit and vegetables, a higher intake of Ramyun and soft drink, a worse life style of hand washing, and wearing safety equipment. Conclusion: Lifestyle of television viewing was the comprehensive results from family, school, and society rather than a personal preference. Therefore, it is necessary to educate the hazard of excessive television viewing, to reenforce the students' health competence, to activate a safe leisure program as an alternate of television viewing, and to develop a recommendation.

The effects of the DASH diet education program with omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on metabolic syndrome parameters in elderly women with abdominal obesity

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the overall effects of a tailored Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) nutritional intervention program which included omega-3 fatty acids supplementation, on dietary self-efficacy, dietary knowledge, and dietary behaviors in Korean elderly women with abdominal obesity. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of the program on metabolic syndrome parameters including the antioxidant capacities in these subjects. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A randomized, controlled trial was conducted for 8 weeks. The experimental group (n = 21) received a weekly tailored nutritional program for 8 weeks and the control group (n = 18) received only one educational session. The clinical survey was conducted before and after the intervention period. RESULTS: After the intervention, dietary self-efficacy (P = 0.023), frequency of fruit intake (P = 0.019), and dietary fiber intake (P = 0.044) were higher in the experimental group than in the control group. The oxidative stress (P < 0.001) was lower in the experimental group than in the control group. Moreover, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (P = 0.023) had significantly decreased in the experimental group but not in the control group after the intervention. CONCLUSIONS: The intervention program including omega-3 fatty acid supplementation had a positive effect on dietary self-efficacy, dietary behaviors, and oxidative stress among aged women with abdominal obesity.

Risk Factors of Prostate Cancer: a Case-control Study in Faisalabad, Pakistan

  • Background: Prostate cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer among males in Pakistan but very little is known about risk factors among the Pakistani population. Therefore a hospital-based, case-control study was carried out in Faisalabad to identify potential risk factors. Materials and Methods: This study was based on 140 prostate cancer cases and 280 normal controls. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for odds ratios to assess the relationship between prostate cancer and different risk factors. Results: Family history of prostate cancer, age, smoking, obesity, consumption of red meat and frequent use of fat items significantly increased the prostate cancer risk (odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of: 7.32; 1.79-29.8; 16.9, 5.60-50.8; 2.47, 1.17-5.18; 5.79, 2.66-12.6; 2.71, 1.07-6.91; and 3.39, 1.47-7.83, respectively. On the other hand, more consumption of fruit, fluid intake and better lifestyle (physical activity) significantly reduced the risk of developing prostate cancer with odd ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals of: 0.27, 0.11-0.61; 0.05, 0.02-0.12; and 0.28, 0.13-0.58. Conclusions: The results of the present study suggested that age, family history of prostate cancer, smoking, obesity, fluid intake, frequent use of fat items, consumption of fruits and better lifestyle might be associated with prostate cancer among Pakistani males.

Energy and nutrient intake and food patterns among Turkish university students

  • The goal of this study was to determine the nutritional value and nutrients provided by each meal and snack of consumed by university students. Subjects were randomly selected from volunteer students at five universities in Ankara. A sample of 400 students (167 female and 233 male) aged between 19 and 24 years participated in this study. A questionnaire designed to assess general characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and 24 hours dietary records was administered using face to face interviews. According to body mass index classifications, 69.5% of male students, and 77.7% of female students were found to be in the normal weight categories. Overweight categories were found to be 25.1% and 5.6% for males and females, respectively. Breakfast and lunch were the most frequently skipped meals, with a total of 47.7% of students skipping breakfast and 25.2% skipping lunch. The percentages of energy deficiency were found to be 78.4% in males, and 81.1% in females. Dinner was the main meal for consumption of energy and the other nutrients, except saturated fatty acids, for both genders. Also, dinner was the largest contributor of energy in both genders. Students ate more bread, cereals, and meat at dinner than during the other meals and snacks. Fruit was consumed more during snacks than at the other meals by all students. It was concluded that students need more nutritional information about healthy nutritional habits, adequate intake of nutrients, and ideal body weights.

Efficacy of Red Ginseng Drinks as School Meals for Middle and High School (중·고등학교 학교급식에 제공되기 위한 홍삼 음료의 타당성 연구)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of red ginseng drinks as school meal drinks for 456 middle and high school students in Cheongdo-gun, North Gyeongsang Province. In preliminary studies, we focused on saponin with an efficacy of Rg 1 and Rg 2 in prepared red ginseng drinks. The health benefits and sensory characteristics were also investigated. For the frequency analysis, the satisfaction of the drinks as beverages serving as a school meal was relatively low, and the demand for fruit drinks was high. The result of sensory evaluations indicated a positive response of > 50.0% for the container packaging and design, daily intake, and tastes. Regarding the correlation analysis on red ginseng drinks, there were significant differences (p < 0.01) in the response to packaging (a daily intake) and design. In addition, health and learning benefits showed a very high correlation at the p < 0.01 significance level.

Analysis of Health Promotion determinants in Major OECD Countries: A pooled cross-sectional time series (건강결과와 건강결정요인간의 횡단면 시계열 연구 : 주요 OECD 국가를 대상으로)

  • Health promotion policies have needed to assess in detailed and evidence-based work to set a policy goal and clear future directions of health promotion in Korea. To identify the major factors related with health promotion, we assessed the associations between public health outcome (potential years of life loss, PYLL) and national health determinants. For this purpose, we used a pooled cross sectional time-series regression analysis with corrected fixed effect models involving sixteen member countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development during the period 1970 to 2001. The PYLL was positively associated with tobacco and alcohol consumption (model 1 and 2) and calories intake (model 2 and 3) while the PYLL was negatively associated with GDP, fruit and vegetable intake (model 2), number of doctors (model 3), coverage rates of health care security, and elderly population rates (model 4). In conclusion, health behaviors related with tobacco, alcohol, and nutrition were significant health determinants for health outcome. Overall analysis results of this study will provide a guidance toward improved macro- and micro-policy development for future health promotion policy in Korea.

A Study on the Nutrient Intakes and Supplemental Food of Infants in Relation to the Method of Feeding Practics (영양공급형태에 따른 영아의 영양소 섭취와 보충식 실태에 관한 연구)

  • The surveys of food intakes were carried out on 49 healthy infants aged 4-9 months at the first interview and repeated 3 more times at the interval of 2 months by using food diary recorded by their mothers. Of the subjects 12 were breast-fed, 28, formula-fed, and 9, mixed type-fed. Foods introduced first as the weaning food were commercial weaning foods, fruit juices, yoghurt, egg and rice. Supplemental food was introduced at the age of 4 months in 57% of the infants, but it amounted to a significant proportion of overall food consumption from the age of 6 months. The levels of nutrients except energy, iron and niacin were similar or in excess of RDA, and breast-fed infants tended to have lower intakes of energy and protein compared to infants formula-fed or mixed type-fed. Average intakes of vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin C and calcium were above RDA, but iron intake did not meet RDA of infants of all ages. In conclusion, the average status of nutrient intakes of infants was fairly good, however, food consumption besides milk was less in breast-fed infants than in formula-fed infants, and iron status seemed to be poor, Although it is well-known that breast-milk compared to formulas is more beneficial for infants, mothers feeding breast-milk to their infants should be educated for the importance of supplemental food and its practice to support good nutrition.

Gene-Diet Interaction on Cancer Risk in Epidemiological Studies

  • Genetic factors clearly play a role in carcinogenesis, but migrant studies provide unequivocal evidence that environmental factors are critical in defining cancer risk. Therefore, one may expect that the lower availability of substrate for biochemical reactions leads to more genetic changes in enzyme function; for example, most studies have indicated the variant MTHFR genotype 677TT is related to biomarkers, such as homocysteine concentrations or global DNA methylation particularly in a low folate diet. The modification of a phenotype related to a genotype, particularly by dietary habits, could support the notion that some of inconsistencies in findings from molecular epidemiologic studies could be due to differences in the populations studied and unaccounted underlying characteristics mediating the relationship between genetic polymorphisms and the actual phenotypes. Given the evidence that diet can modify cancer risk, gene-diet interactions in cancer etiology would be anticipated. However, much of the evidence in this area comes from observational epidemiology, which limits the causal inference. Thus, the investigation of these interactions is essential to gain a full understanding of the impact of genetic variation on health outcomes. This report reviews current approaches to gene-diet interactions in epidemiological studies. Characteristics of gene and dietary factors are divided into four categories: one carbon metabolism-related gene polymorphisms and dietary factors including folate, vitamin B group and methionines; oxidative stress-related gene polymorphisms and antioxidant nutrients including vegetable and fruit intake; carcinogen-metabolizing gene polymorphisms and meat intake including heterocyclic amins and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon; and other gene-diet interactive effect on cancer.
