  • This research was conducted in order to analyze the difference in yield through the changes in growth and measuring the photosynthesis efficiency in cherry tomatoes. Seedlings of cherry tomato 'Nonari' were used as scion and non-grafted control, while 4 different grafted tomatoes 'Powerguard', 'T1', 'L1', and 'B.blocking' were used as rootstocks. Plants grafted onto 'B.blocking' produced the highest fruit yield (417.5 g plant-1), whereas non-grafted plant 'Nonari' had the lowest fruit yield, (354.2 g plant-1) at the latter period of cherry tomatoes in May. The flowering position in May, plant grafted onto 'B.blocking', showed 14-17 cm, whereas non-grafted plant 'Nonari' showed 10-14 cm. The growth strength on May 15, non-grafted plant 'Nonari', showed 8.43 mm which was the lowest value among the treatments. Grafted plants kept the growth balance until the end of the harvest that led to an increase in fruit yield, while non-grafted plant weakened the vigor earlier that led to a decrease in fruit yield. Grafted plants showed higher values of chlorophyll fluorescence variables than the values of non-grafted plant. These results indicate that grafting influenced fruit yield which was observed as maintaining growth balance for longer and an increase in photosynthesis efficiency compared to non-grafting.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of nonwoven fabrics weight(Ounce) on growth, quality and yield of oriental melon (Cucumis melo L. var. makwa Mak.). Seedling of 'Gumssaragi-Eunchun' was grafted on 'Shinthozoa' root stock. In this study, The minimum air temperature in 6 ounce at night was $4.8^{\circ}C,\;6.9^{\circ}C$ in 9 ounce, $7.9^{\circ}C$ in 12 ounce and $8.0^{\circ}C$ in 15 ounce, respectively. Leaf length, stem diameter, leaf numbers, leaf area, fresh weight and dry weight for 30 days after planting were better in high minimum air temperature at night than in low minimum air temperature, particularly leaf areas of the plant in 9 ounce was $370cm^2$ at 30 days after planting, $116\%$ in 12 ounce, $129\%$ in 15 ounce. The xylem exudates amount in 9 ounce for 24 hours just after basal stem abscission was 10.1mg. It was 1.2 times much in 12 ounce and 1.9times much in 15 ounce than in 9 ounce at 30 days after planting. The blooming of female was faster by 6 days in 15 and 12 ounce but was delayed by 3 days in 6 ounce than 9 ounce, and the days of blooming to harvesting were shorter by 3 days in 15 ounce and 4 days in 12 ounce but was delayed by 3 days in 6 ounce than in 9 ounce. Fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, soluble solids, and total yield was the highest in 15 ounce followed by 12 ounce,9 ounce and 6 ounce. Fermented fruit rate was the highest in 6 ounce followed by 9 ounce, 12 ounce and 15 ounce, and marketable fruit rates were 15, 12, 9 and 6 ounce in order. Compared to 1,781kg yield per 10a of 9 ounce, $19\%\;and\;49\%$ was increased under 12 ounce and 15 ounce but $47\%$ were decreased 6 ounce.

  • One-year old pear (Pyrus pyrifolia L.) trees of a new commercial cultivar 'Manpungbae', recently developed in South Korea, were planted in 2001 (planting year 1) and trained to four trellis systems: Y-trellis, Y-II-trellis, pergola, and vase-pergola. To evaluate training systems in the local area (southern Korea), tree growth responses were compared for each trellis system from planting years 3 to 8. For trees trained to Y-trellis and pergola systems, a high proportion of land covered by tree canopy was maintained over the study duration, with 70-80% coverage in year 8. Eight-year cumulative yield per tree was increased in the vase-pergola system with a low planting density and an additional scaffold. Compared with other systems, cummulative yield use efficiency was greatest in Y-II-trellis and pergola systems in years 5 and 8. Compared with Y-II-trellis and vase-pergola systems, the 8-year cumulative yield per hectare was two fold greater for trees trained to the Y-trellis (103 tons) and pergola systems (101 tons). Use of the pergola system improved average fruit weight and fruit soluble solid contents, as well as net income in year 8. Given that we observed reduced fruit productivity and increased labor hours (pruning and orchard work), we consider the Y-trellis and pergola systems to be less valuable trellis systems than the others evaluated.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of substrates and nutrient solution supplying methods in the media culture using perlite and its mixtures with rice hull, carbonized rice hull. cocopeat on the growth and fruit qualify of hydroponically grown cucumber. Three substrates. Perlite(70%) +rice hull(30%) perlite(70%) +carbonized rice hull(30%) and perlite(70%)+cocopeat(30%) were compared with perlite medium. Supplying methods of nutrient solution were composed of drip irrigation, modified drip irrigation(covered with cheesecloth between drip hose and substrate) and mist system Leaf area of cucumber Plants was lowest in perlite medium while it was highest in mixture of perlite and cocopeat. NAR was higher in the plot of mixture with cocopeat. and same trend was observed in LAI and CGR. T/R ratio was higher in Perlite and perlite mixture with rice hull. Fruit Yields increased in the plot of modified drip irrigation system. When perlite mixture with rice hull used as a substrate. mist system was recommended. Perlite mixture with carbonized rice hull was observed favored in conventional drip irrigation system. Marketable yield and the number of fruit per plant increased and the malformed fruit decreased in the plot of modified drip irrigation system with the mixtures of Perlite and cocopeat.

  • In June and July 2015 and 2017, typical signs and symptoms of brown rot were observed on the fruit of Japanese apricot, peach, apricot, Japanese plum, and sweet cherry with incidence levels of 2-5% in Jeonju and Imsil, Korea. Early symptoms were small, circular, light brown spots that eventually destroyed entire fruit. Small sporodochia later appeared on the surface. Conidia isolated from each host were one-celled, hyaline, lemon-shaped and borne in branched monilioid chains. The optimal temperature range for hyphal growth of all the isolates was $20-25^{\circ}C$. The growth of hyphae was faster on potato dextrose agar and oatmeal agar than others. Multiple alignments using the ITS sequences from different host showed that they matched each other (100%). The ITS sequences showed 100% identity to those of M. fructicola. Based on the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis via internal transcribed spacer (ITS), all the isolate was identified as M. fructicola. Pathogenicity of representative isolates was proved by artificial inoculation, fulfilling Koch's postulates. This is the first confirmed report on brown rot caused by M. fructicola on stone fruit in Korea.

  • Four different parts of Hovenia dulcis $T_{HUNB}$; fruit, bark, vessel area, fruit coat were extracted with water and ethanol. The ethanol extracts of bark, fruit coat and fruit were fractionized into diethyl ether, chloroform and aqueous partitions. Ethanol extract of fruit coat increased the activity of cathepsin B up to 55 %, which can enhance the alcohol dehydration in the liver. The ethanol extracts was more effective than water extracts against the growth of Hep3B, MCF7. The ethanol extracts of bark (0.5mg/ml) inhibited 90% the growth of MCF7. Each extracts and fractions (0.5mg/ml) did not show considerable cytotoxicity on HEL299. In overall, most of the fractions had similar effects to ethanol extracts; however, diethyl ether and chloroform fractions had higher bioactivity than ethanol extracts, but aqueous fraction.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the possibility of practical use of intermittent soaking system(ISS) in hydroponicaly growing tomato. There were four treatments which were NFT, Aeroponics, and ISS with 10 and 15 minute soaking intervals. 1. Plant height is highest in NFT, but main root length is longest in ISS. While stem diameter and leaf number were not significantly difference. 2. Fresh and dry weight were heavier in NFT than those of other systems at early growth stage, but the heavier in ISS system, the growth more develop. 3. In 43 days after treatment, the number of flowerlet was largest in aeroponics, and then ISS and NFT in order. Fruit weight per plant was also heaviest in aeroponics. 4. Average yield per plant were 1929.1g in aeroponics, 1475.2g in ISS with 10 minute soaking interval, 1276.2g in NFT and 1084.8g in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval. 5. Average fruit number per plant were 11.0 in aeroponics, 9.7 in NFT, 8.3 in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval, and 7.7 in ISS with 10 minute soaking interval. Average fruit weight were 192.9g in aeroponics, 172.4g in ISS with 10 minute soaking interval, 134.0g in NFT and 126.0g in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval. 6. Average fruit length was longer in aeroponics and ISS with 10 minute soaking interval than in the NFT and ISS with 15 minute soaking interval. Average fruit width was similarly wider in NFT, aeroponics and ISS with 10 minute soaking interval than in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval.
