  • The berry growth and pericarp characteristics were characterized to confirm the effects of bagging periods on berry cracking during berry development in 'Kyoho' grape. The berry weight was the highest at 13.4 g in late period of bagging treated at 7 to 9 weeks after full bloom (WAFB) as compared with the lowest of 12.3 g in total period bagging. The berry cracking rate under critical turgor pressure in the non-bagging control was 53.3%, while those of bagging treatments were decreased in the order of 42.7%, 37.3%, 33.3%, and 18.7% in bagged during 3 to 9, 3 to 5, 5 to 7, and 7 to 9 WAFB, respectively. In the results of observation on histological characteristics of pericarp, berry lenticels of whole bagging treatments had smaller and normal shape compared with non-bagging control treatment. Especially on the pericarp of late period bagged during 7 to 9 WAFB, suberization around stomata and micro-cracking were not observed and structural strength of pericarp was increased with thicker sub-epidermal layer and cell wall. Therefore, the results indicate that bagging treatment for two weeks just before the veraison when the day length and daylight is relatively longer and stronger can effectively reduce berry cracking by strengthening structure of pericarp in 'Kyoho' grape.

  • This study aims at investigating the effect of soil moisture control and truss limited high density culture on the growth, fruit yield and quality of tomato. To minimize of loss yield of tomato, flower cluster in number was limited to two and three truss and planting density was raised. Soil moisture control was started from 40 days after anthesis and irrigation point was set in -30kPa and -50kPa, which were compared with -10kPa For high density culture, the planting number of truss limited high density culture was planted twice as many as control. Soil moisture repression reduced the growth of stem diameter, leaf and plant height. Leaf chlorophyll content was higher in -50kPa and -30kPa than control. No significant differences, however, shows in -10kPa. The occurrence rate of bloom-end rot and cracking was increased by growing of irrigation repression. Pinching three fruit truss was higher than pinching two fruit truss in the occurrence rate of them. Soil moisture repression resulted in the reduction of fruit weight and in special, truss limited high density was distinctly decreased in -50kPa. The number of fruit was not affected by soil moisture control, but 3rd flower cluster was lower than 2nd flower cluster in the number of fruits and 2nd one was lower than 1st one. Under irrigation repression, rate of dry matter tended to grow in -30kPa, -50kPa compared with control and pinching three fruit truss was higher than two truss. Marketable yield dropped to 36.7%m 46.3 in -30kPa, -50kPa on pinching two fruit truss and dropped to 27.3%, 32.3% in 3rd flower cluster compared with control.

  • Quality changes of fruit vegetables were investigated during simulated export and marketing to find out the optimum shipping temperature. Fruit vegetables were loaded into a small refrigerated-container and kept for four days at various temperatures, and fruit quality was assayed immediately after harvest, 4 days after storage and 4 days after marketing at ambient temperature. In 'Back Seong Ilho' cucumber fruits, fresh weight loss was further reduced at $13^{\circ}C$ and $11^{\circ}C$ than at $15^{\circ}C$ and room temperature. Soluble solid contents remained at relatively lower levels when cucumbers were stored at $13^{\circ}C$ and $11^{\circ}C$. In 'Chun Ryang' eggplant fruits, fresh weight loss was greatly increased at all the temperatures (room, $12^{\circ}C,\;9^{\circ}C,\;and\;6^{\circ}C$). However, flesh browning, a primary quality factor of eggplant fruit, was most effectively inhibited at $9^{\circ}C$, whereas chilling injury occurred in fruit flesh at $6^{\circ}C$. Water loss of 'Eals Seinu' melon fruits was most inhibited and soluble solid contents at harvest were maintained for the longest period at $4^{\circ}C$. In 'Pe Pe' cherry tomatoes, storage at $10^{\circ}C$ and $7^{\circ}C$ seemed to more effectively inhibit metabolic changes and the incidence of cracking, the severest disorder than room temperature. But the fruits stored at $10^{\circ}C$ contained higher level of soluble solids than those at $7^{\circ}C$. The overall results suggest that the optimum shipping temperature range is 11 to $13^{\circ}C$ for cucumbers, around $9^{\circ}C$ for eggplant fruit, $4^{\circ}C$ for melons, and $10^{\circ}C$ for cherry tomatoes.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of daytime temperature on fruit crack-ing in the paprika cv. Fiesta and cv. Jubilee under soil culture experiment of vinyl house for two years from 2003 to 2004. The rate of cracked fruit was higher in cv. Fiesta than cv. Jubilee and was the highest at the high daytime temperature of $34\pm$$1^{\circ}C$. and then rapidly increased after April becomes better weather conditions. The flesh hardness and the rate of flesh dry weight were lower in cv. Fiesta than cv. Jubilee and were the lowest at the high daytime temperature of $34\pm$1$^{\circ}C$. but the thickness of flesh was thicker in cv. Fiesta than cv. Jubilee and was the thinnest at the high daytime temperature of $34\pm$$1^{\circ}C$. Inorganic matter contents of flesh was observed no difference to the cultivars and also the temperature treatments. Root condition in harvesting time was better in cv. Fiesta than cv. Jubilee and was not difference in temperature treatments. Therefore, the rate of cracked fruit showed up a positive correlation to the flesh hardness, flesh dry weight, flesh firmness and root condition, and has not correlation to the flesh thickness and inorganic matter con-tents. In conclusion, differences in cultivar sensitivity and the highest rate of cracked fruit in daytime temperature of $34\pm$$1^{\circ}C$ may be partly due to difference in flesh characteristic and root condition but additional factors may be involved.

  • This study has been conducted to investigate the effect of GA3 solution dipping treatment after 1 days full bloom on spike growth and fruit quality at harvest of 'Campbell Early' grapevine. The fruit cluster growth(weight, length, width) and fruit stalk(diameter, length) at harvest were increased significantly by GA3 10 mg·L-1 solution dipping treatment compared to control and another concentration. The berry growth (berry No, weight, length, diameter) at harvest showed no difference by treatment GA3 concentration different. Spike weight was increased by GA3 5, 10, 20, mg·L-1 treatment compared to control, but no difference GA3 40 mg·L-1 treatment. The degree of compact berry, bloom, skin color and SSC at harvest by GA3 solution dipping treatment were not significantly different from those of control. but increased seedlessness induction by GA3 10 mg·L-1 treatment. The occurrence percent of berry cracking by GA3 5, 10, 20, 40 mg·L-1 treatment significantly decreased. The bitter rot of berry harvest showed no difference by treatment GA3 concentration different. Total spike length was increased by GA3 5, 10 mg·L-1 treatment compared to control and GA3 20, 40 mg·L-1 treatment. The spike length of 1st from 15th to position increased by GA3 10 mg·L-1 treatment.

  • The study I was initiated in six private 'Campbell Early' vineyards in parts of Jeollanam-do province to relieve symptom of fruit blight mostly due to a high temperature occurred in Summer. High percentage of fruit blight was observed for medium growth of grape trees non-irrigated. In the study II, grape trees treated with 0%, 30% and 60% shade films were investigated for the tree responses, including fruit blight symptom in the research plots. Harvesting time was advanced approximately two weeks by the 30% shade treatment. High percentage of shades increased total shoot length per tree and decreased shoot diameter, with the greatest number of shoots observed for the 30% shade-treated grapes. Light intensity in the tree canopy was approximately 26% decreased by 30% shade treatment. Marketable harvested fruits per tree were 50.6 of 30% shade treatment, 33.6 of 0% shade, and 42.8 of 60% shade. The 30% shade treatment decreased to 11.8% of cluster blight per tree and to 11.2% of berry blight per cluster. The 30% shade treatment increased cluster weight, berry weight, soluble solid contents, and anthocyanin contents.

  • Effects of different soil water conditions on fruit characteristics were investigated in 5-year-old 'Nero' black chokeberry trees (Aronia melanocarpa). Three kinds of drought stresses, including low water deficit, severe water deficit, and very severe water deficit, due to decline of soil water decreased the fruit quality of weight of 10 berries, soluble solid content, and anthocyanin, compared with the control (consistent water supply) during the harvest period. After longer drought stress, supply of soil water could induce berry cracking because cell size of epidermis of fruits contracted, whereas cell size of sub-epidermis and flesh expanded. Thus periodic water supply using water supply facility is needed for yield and quality of 'Nero' black chokeberry fruits.

  • This research was conducted to investigate effect the plant growth regulators (PGRs) on the characteristics of fruit and flesh softening, using GA3 and thidiazuron (TDZ) treatments in 'Heukboseok' grapes. The total yield obtained under PGR treatment was 88.3% lower than the target production when a single treatment with $GA_3$ of low concentrations was used, but the expected yield was recovered by combined treatment with TDZ and $GA_3$. When harvested on the basis of color, the harvest rate up to 100 days after full bloom (DAFB) was low with the $GA_3$ single treatment, but was increased by the addition of TDZ, with the second TDZ mixed treatment being particularly effective. The soluble solids content in the PGR-treated samples demonstrated no significant changes after 90 DAFB, while the acidity content decreased rapidly starting from 90 DAFB. Measured on the basis of sugar and acidity content, maturity was reached much earlier in treated fruit than in the non-treated fruit. Firmness was maintained at a higher level until the final harvest time after PGR treatment compared to untreated grapes according to epidermis thickness and flesh density increase to activity cell division and expansion by $GA_3$ and TDZ. In particular, the fruit quality was improved based on the delay of softening in primary and secondary treatments of $25mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;GA_3+2.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ TDZ. The production of seedless fruit was difficult, even with the inclusion of TDZ, reaching the highest seedless rate of only 65.5%. Fruit cracking was rare, occurring at a rate of about 0.0~0.9% in all treatments. Accordingly, 'Heukboseok' grapes should be harvested within 100 days after full bloom (DBFB) before a rapid decrease of firmness, conferred by primary and secondary treatments with $25mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;GA_3+2.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ TDZ.

  • This study was conducted to identify the effect of soil water potential on the fruit quality and yield of paprika in summer fertigation cultivation. Treatments of soil water potential during cultivation were composed of -10, -20, and -30 kPa, respectively. The plant height of early growth was increased by high soil water potential (-10 kPa) treatment all of 'Cupra' and 'E499524' (mini-paprika) varieties. Mean fruit weight was increased by -20 kPa soil water potential treatment compared with the other treatments. The fruit number per plant was not affected by soil water potential in 'Cupra' variety but was increased by -20 kPa soil water potential treatment in E499524 variety (mini-paprika). The yield of soil water potential treatment of -20 kPa was higher than those of the other treatments. The flesh thickness and sugar content were not affected by soil water potential in 'Cupra' and 'E499524' (mini-paprika) varieties. The incidence of fruit cracking was decreased with decreasing soil water potential. Mineral contents of plants such as nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium etc. were not affected in soil water potential.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the fog-cooling system on the growth and yield characteristics of two large-fruited paprika cultivars during summer cultivation season. The temperature inside the greenhouse equipped with fog-cooling system was $2-3^{\circ}C$ lower than that in the control. The results of study show the possibilities of maintaining indoor temperatures below $35^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity at the level of 80% using fogcooling system during hot seasons of the year. Plant height, fruit weight and number of fruits per plant were higher for both cultivars in the fog-cooling treatment compared to those in control. Mean fruit weight and yield per unit area were higher in the fog-cooling treatment than those in the control. However there were no significant differences in sugar content, flesh thickness and locule number of fruits due to fog-cooling system. Number of fruits with epidermal cracking was decreased in the fog-cooling system for both paprika cultivars. Mineral contents of plants such as nitrogen (N), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), were not affected due to fog-cooling treatment.
