Transmission of Apple scar skin viroid by Grafting, Using Contaminated Pruning Equipment, and Planting Infected Seeds

  • Apple scar skin, one of the most destructive diseases affecting apple, is caused by Apple scar skin viroid (ASSV d). Fruit dappling appeared on several cultivars in Korea and has been distributed to major cultivated areas since 2001. ASSVd was identified from infected fruits by using nucleic acid sequence-based amplification with electrochemiluminescence (NASBA-ECL). NASBA-ECL method was faster and hundredfold more sensitive than reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for ASSVd detection in apple leaves/ stems. ASSVd was rapidly transmitted to the entire tree in the second year after artificial inoculation. The ASSVd could be transmitted efficiently by using contaminated pruning scissors to both lignified stems (60 to $70\%$) and green shoots (20 to $40\%$) of apple tree and young plants. Dipping of contaminated scissors in $2\%$ sodium hypochlorite solution effectively prevented viroid transmission. In the ASSV d-infected fruits, the viroid was easily detected from fruit skin, seed coat, and embryo. Moreover, embryo and endosperm separately excised from the ASSVd-infected seeds were ASSVd positive in NASBA-ECL assay. Seedlings germinated from ASSVd-positive seeds showed $7.7\%$ infection rate., which indicated that ASSVd is seed-borne.

  • 등숙과정에 있어서 엽과 과실에 내재하는 발아억제 물질의 변화를 조사하기 위하여 개화후 3,5,7주 및 9주에 재료를 채취추출하여 Paper Chromatography법에 의해 분리한 후, 생물검정을 하였던 바 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 잎에서 Rf 0.1, Rf 0.4∼0.6 및 Rf 0.8∼1.0의 부위에 3종의 발아억제물질이 존재함이 확인되었다. 잎에 내재하는 3종의 억제물질중 Rf 0.1과 Rf 0.4∼0.6에서는 등숙이 진행되어감에 따라 증가하는 경향이었으며 특히 Rf 0.4∼0.6의 물질이 더욱 뚜렷하였다. Rf 0.8∼1.0의 억제물질은 그 변화가 인정되지 않았다. 2. 등숙중인 종자에서는 억제물질중 Rf 0.4∼0.6의 물질이 가장 현저한 증가를 보였으나 Rf 0.1과 Rf 0.8∼1.0에서는 그 변화가 비교적 적었다. 3. 과육에 내재하는 3종의 억제물질중 Rf 0.8∼l.0의 것이 다른 종의 물질에 비해 그 증가율이 높았다. 4. 내과피에 존재하는 3종의 억제물질은 감숙되어 감에 따라 모두 감소되었다. 5. Rf 0.4∼0.6의 발아억제물질은 Rf 0.1과 Rf 0.8∼1.0의 물질보다 어느 기관이나 조직에서 항시 그 억제작용이 강하게 나타났다.

사과의 결과지 길이와 꽃눈 위치에 따른 개화 및 과실 특성 (Characteristics of Flowering and Fruit According to Bearing Branch length and Flower Bud Position in Apples)

  • 국내 육성 품종인 3년생 '홍로'와 도입 품종인 4년생 '갤럭시갈라' 사과를 대상으로 정아 고사 시 장과지 및 액아의 활용 가치를 알아보고자 결과지 길이 및 꽃눈 위치 따른 개화 및 과실 특성을 조사하였다. '홍로'와 '갤럭시갈라' 모두 개화시, 만개기 및 낙화기는 20 cm 이상 결과지에서 5 cm 미만과 $10{\sim}15cm$ 결과지보다 다소 늦었다. 화총당 꽃수도 때 정도 적었다. 과중, 종자수, 당산비 등 대부분의 과실 특성은 5 cm 미만과 $10{\sim}15cm$ 20 cm 이상 결과지보다 높았지만, 당도와 산 함량은 반대의 경향이었다. 20 cm 이상 결과지의 정아와 액아 간 대부분의 과실 특성은 액아에서 좋은 경향을 나타내었지만, '홍로' 사과의 종자수, '갤럭시갈라'의 Hunter a값을 제외하고는 유의한 차이를 나타내지 않았다. 그리고 두 품종 모두 과중과 종자 간 높은 상관성을 나타내었다. 따라서 정아 고사 시 장과지로 대체 활용할 수 있고 '갤럭시갈라'의 경우 액화아의 이용도 가능하였다.

검설뽕의 동질4배체 ′4원뽕26호′의 임성 및 재배학적 특성 (Fertility and Some Agronomic Characteristics of ′Sawonppong26′ Autotetraploid Artificially derived from Keomseolppong (Morus spp))

  • Autotetraploid 'Sawonppong 26'was induced by dropping clochicine solution in growing point of Keomseolppong which is of high rootability and some agronomic charactelistics are as follows. Sawonppong 26 is a tetraploid of Keomseolppong with 56 of the chromosome number. Its fertlization percent was 59.4% and the germination percent of sank seed was normal. Sugar degree of mulberry fruit was 13.3% and total acidity was 0.69%. Single fruit weight of Sawonppong 26 was increased by 79%, as compared to that of Keomseolppong. Even though percent of survival of hard wood cutting was 94%, number of rootings was less and diameter of root was slender, it is expectedly a promising variety to be used for a breeding parent from the aspect of rootability.

Enhancement of Seed Germination and Uniformity in Triploid Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. and Nakai)

  • One of the main factors restricting production of triploid seedless watermelon is poor germination due to weak embryos, thick seed coats, and larger air spaces. This study was carried out to investigate the priming effects of different concentrations of chemicals, including hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), fusicoccin, and gibberellic acid (GA) on germination and seedling uniformity of triploid watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). Three commercial triploid cultivars, Seedless Plus, Sinus, and Sizero, were pretreated with water and different levels of $H_2O_2$ (2 and 4%), fusicoccin (FC: 1, 5, and $10{\mu}M$), and GA (1, 5, and $10{\mu}M$). The present findings helped to find optimal priming conditions for improving germination of triploid watermelon. Treatment with $5{\mu}M$ GA and hydropriming helped to break seed dormancy, enhancing the final germination percentages in all triploid cultivars and increasing the germination index in Sizero. These seed-priming treatments could be used on large scale for industrial applications. Moreover, hydropriming provides a simple, effective, and costless method to improve seed germination and seedling vigor of Sinus and Sizero varieties.

Enhancing Effect of Shimizuomyces paradoxus on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Canola, Plant Growth of Cucumber, and Harvest of Tomato

  • Shimizuomyces paradoxus showed no inhibitory effect against plant pathogen fungi, such as Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici and Alternaria solani. The S. paradoxus culture filtrate showed higher seed germination and seedling growth rates in canola than distilled water and potato-dextrose broth. A conidial suspension of $1.0{\times}10^4/mL$ resulted in the highest growth stimulating effects on total plant length, and fresh and dry weight of shoots and roots in cucumber, when compared to the highest suspension concentration. Total plant length and shoot weight increased with the foliar spray treatment, and root length and root weight increased by simultaneous treatments of soil drenching and foliar spray in cucumber. Lower concentrations of the S. paradoxus conidial suspension increased the harvest of tomato fruit.

Improving the Calorific Value of Nyamplung (Calophyllum inophyllum L.) Seed Shell Pellets by Torrefaction Treatment for Their Use as a Renewable Energy Resource

  • Nyamplung (Calophyllum inophyllum L.) seeds, which account for 40% of the fruit, have been used as a raw material for biofuels, and the seed shells remaining after their extraction are wasted. In this study, we investigated the potential of waste Nyamplung seed shells in the form of pellets as a biomass energy resource. A completely randomized research design was implemented to evaluate the effects of torrefaction and heat treatment on the quality of produced pellets. Two observed treatments, namely, particle size (0.18-0.25, 0.25-0.43, and 0.43-0.84 mm) and torrefaction temperature (200℃, 225℃, and 250℃), were investigated. Our results showed that the calorific value of torrefied Nyamplung seed-shell pellets ranged from 4,245.60 to 4,528.00 cal/g, fulfilling the Indonesia Nasional Standard (≥ 4,000 cal/g). The quality of pellets were the best when produced from raw materials with a particle size of 0.18-0.25 mm and torrefaction temperature of 225℃. Thus, we concluded that waste Nyamplung seed shells are a good raw material for the production of pellets.

These food Is all vegetable food that don't take diseases of adult people. But God gave Noah the green plants. Everything that lives and moves will be food for Noah. Just as God gave man the green plants. And then man must not eat meat (animal protein food) that has its lifeblood still in it and God must not eat fat in it. The fat contains much fat (saturated fatty acids) and cholesterol that have susceptibility to disease of coronary heart, hypertension and atheriosclerosis etc. God must not eat these fat before we don't know that It have susceptibility to disease of adult people.

한국산 오수유성분에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Components of Evodia daniellii $H_{EMSLEY}$ in Korea)

  • Evodia daniellii $H_{EMSLEY}$, a plant belonging to Rutaceae, is cultivated in Korea and used as a folkmedicine for gastric inflammation, extermination of noxious insects, and headache. The seed oil of this plant also has been used in various diseases, for example, dermatitis, scabies and so forth. From the barks, fruit peels, and seed oil of Evodia daniellii $H_{EMSLEY}$, four crystalline compounds were isolated. Three compounds except one were characterized as methyl sinapate, bergapten, and evodiamine by m.p. determination, elemental analysis, UV, IR, NMR spectra and mass analysis. Even though methyl sinapate was a known synthetic compound, it was not yet reported as a natural product. From the seed oil, unsaponifiable fraction was separated and was analyzed. It was considered to be consisted with sterols, hydrocarbons and tocopherols.

  • Punica granatum, L. (Pomegranate) has 613 seeds which accidentally corresponds to the 613 commandments in the Bible. Accordingly, the fruit has been worshipped by the Jewish and other religious people from the ancient. Pomegranate's seed, peel and juice contain a variety of ethnomedical components so much as the sum of three kinds of other common fruits. The number of published papers related to the pomegranate in recent 7 years flourished 7 times more than before at the bases of Medline record. Since the containments of estrogen, as $17{\alpha}-estradiol,\;17{\beta}-estradiol$, estrone, and estradiol, etc., in pomegranate have been reported, public interests and commercial values of pomegranate arose considerably. The report was disproved later, however, merits of this fruit remained yet; clinical efficacy for preventing and remediating cancers including breast and prostate cancers by oral administration of the juice, seed oil, and peel extract is still believed to be true. In this review, target components of pomegranate such as antioxidants, anticancers, antiestrogens and ethnomedical components were analyzed and discussed along with examining its pharmaceutical efficacy and prescription to postmenopausal lesion, cardiosclerosis, cosmetic beautification, viral and allergic symptoms, and diabetes mellitus, etc.
