A Study on Evaluating the Applicability of Trapezoidal-shaped Grooves to Airport Runways (사다리꼴 형상 그루빙의 공항 활주로 적용성 평가 연구)

  • This study is to evaluate the applicability and performance of trapezoidal-shaped grooves on domestic airport runways. For this, the constructability, drainage performance, and friction resistance characteristics of trapezoidal-shaped grooves compared to square-shaped grooves were evaluated through test construction on pavement at Incheon Airport. As a result of the test construction, the trapezoidal-shaped grooves satisfies the required geometry standards and tolerance, and secured a macrotexture that was 25% improved compared to the square-shaped grooves. It was confirmed that trapezoid-shaped grooves secured drainage performance of more than 7-9%, and surface friction performance improved compared to existing grooves when the surface of the pavement was wet as the test speed increased in the dry state. In addition, after trapezoidal-shaped grooves was installed on the RWY 16R/34L of Incheon Airport, the friction coefficient was 0.84, which satisfies the design level of the new runway surface of 0.82 at the test speed.

Wear Resistance of c-BN Surface Modified 316L Austenitic Stainless Steel by R.F. Sputtering (R.F. sputtering 방법에 의해 c-BN 표면처리된 316L 오스테나이트계 스테인리스 강의 내마모특성 향상)

  • Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) is a promising material for use in many potential applications because of its outstanding physical properties such as high thermal stability, high abrasive wear resistance, and super hardness. Even though 316L austenitic stainless steel (STS) has poor wear resistance causing it to be toxic in the body due to wear and material chips, 316L STS has been used for implant biomaterials in orthopedics due to its good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Therefore, in the present study, c-BN films with a $B_4C$ layer were applied to a 316L STS specimen in order to improve its wear resistance. The deposition of the c-BN films was performed using an r.f. (13.56 MHz) magnetron sputtering system with a $B_4C$ target. The coating layers were characterized using XPS and SEM, and the mechanical properties were investigated using a nanoindenter. The friction coefficient of the c-BN coated 316L STS steel was obtained using a pin-on-disk according to the ASTM G163-99. The thickness of the obtained c-BN and $B_4C$ were about 220 nm and 630 nm, respectively. The high resolution XPS spectra analysis of B1s and N1s revealed that the c-BN film was mainly composed of $sp^3$ BN bonds. The hardness and elastic modulus of the c-BN measured by the nanoindenter were 46.8 GPa and 345.7 GPa, respectively. The friction coefficient of the c-BN coated 316L STS was decreased from 3.5 to 1.6. The wear property of the c-BN coated 316L STS was enhanced by a factor of two.

Wear and friction characteristics of a carbon fiber composite against specular counterpart (탄소 섬유 복합재의 경면 상대재에 대한 마찰 및 마모 특성)

  • This is the study on dry sliding wear behavior of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced epoxy matrix composite at ambient temperature. The wear rates and friction coefficients against the stainless steel counterpart specularly processed were experimentally determined and the resulting wear mechanisms were microscopically observed. Three principal sliding directions relative to the dominant fiber orientation in the composite were selected. Wren sliding took place against smooth and hard counterpart, the highest wear resistance and the lowest friction coefficient were observed in the antiparallel direction. When the velocity between the composite and the counterpart went up, the wear rate increased. The fiber destruction and cracking caused fiber bending on the contact surface, which was discovered to be dominant wear mechanism.

  • This study has been performed to investigate formability of non-vinyl PCM(pre-coated metal)sheet. First, physical test of PCM sheets were tested to evaluate finish coating characteristic of PCM. And then, test equipment was made for friction test and three non-vinyl PCM sheets were tested by straight pulling method. This paper provides the results of the friction tests showing the influence of sheet surface texture and process conditions. It was found that the influence of contact pressure and speed had an effect upon the level of friction. Also using tests, the scratch resistance of a series of polyester coating has been investigated. This investigation aims to clarify the process conditions that prevent the scratch of PCM to form the good electrical appliances such as microwave oven, air conditioner and refrigerator etc.

Fretting Wear and Friction of lnconel 690 for Steam Generator Tube in Elevated Temperature Water

  • Inconel 690 for nuclear steam generator tube has more chromium than the conventionally used Inconel 600 in order to increase the corrosion resistance. TD evaluate the tribological characteristics under fretting condition the fretting tests as well as sliding tests were carried out in elevated temperature water environment. Fretting tests of the cross-cylinder type were done under various vibrating amplitudes and applied normal loads in order to measure the friction forces and wear volumes. Also, the conventional sliding tests of pin-en-disk type were carried out to compare the test results. In fretting, the friction was very sensitive to the load and the amplitude. The friction coefficient decreased with increasing load and decreasing amplitude. Also, the wear of Inconel 690 can be predictable using the work rate model. Depending on normal loads and vibrating amplitudes, distinctively different wear mechanisms and of ten drastically different wear rates can occur. It was fecund that the fretting wear coefficients in water were increased as increasing the temperature of water.

  • Brake disks for rolling stock are exposed to thermal fatigue during braking, and thermal cracks occur on surface of disks. Thermal cracks can cause serious accidents, deterioration of braking performance and increase of maintenance cost due to frequent exchange of friction materials. In this study, candidate materials with high-heat resistance were selected by searching the literature. By using cast specimens made of the candidate materials, chemical composition, crystal structure and graphite type were analyzed. In addition, friction coefficient and wear were measured and compared with values for the disk material in service. As a result, it was shown that the NiCrMo has highest tensile strength and lowest friction coefficient and the disk material in service has the most stable friction characteristics.

  • Zirconia is well known in industrial applications for its mechanical characteristics. DLC (diamond-like carbon) have high elastic modulus, high electric resistivity, high dielectric constant, high wear resistance, low friction coefficient, bio compatibility, chemically inert and thermally stable. Because of all these physical and chemical properties these types of coatings have become key procedure for thin coating. Friction coefficient of DLC films is already evaluated and the current work is a further advancement by calculating the fracture toughness and wear resistance of these coatings. In the present study DLC thin film coatings are developed on $ZrO_2$ alloy surface using Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) method. Vicker hardness test is employed and it was concluded that, DLC coatings increase the Vickers hardness of ceramics.

A Study on the Pressure Loss in Helically Coiled Tubes (나선코일 튜브 내에서의 압력손실에 관한 연구)

  • The resistance coefficient and heat transfer performance are studied for the turbulent water flow in a smooth coiled tube having variable curvature ratios and a corrugated-coiled tube having a ratio of coil to tube diameter of 22. Experiments are carried out for the fully developed turbulent flow of water in tube coils on the uniform wall temperature condition. This work is limited to tube coils of R/a between 22 and 60 and Reynolds numbers from 13000 to 53000. The tube having a ratio of coil to tube diameter of 27 among the 3 smooth tube coils shows the best heat transfer performance. A corrugated-coiled tube(R/a=60) shows more excellent performance than a smooth coiled tub (R/a=60) at a similar curvature ratio. The friction factor f is sensitive to changes in the velocity profile caused by a temperature gradient. Allowance was made for the pressure loss in the short inlet and outlet lengths and due to the presence of the thermocouple inlet and outlet as a result of separate experimental on a straight tube. It is to be expected that the allowance at the exit will be somewhat too low because of secondary flow effects carried over from the coil.

  • We successively fabricated the Ni metal mask by additive method and evaluated the effects of wetting agents addition on the microstructure, hardness, and friction coefficient. In the process, the additive patterns with fine hole and pitch were made by photolithography technique and subsequently Ni plate was electroformed on the patterns. We found that the microstructure and mechanical properties were significantly varied when the different combinations of the wetting agents were used. When the wetting agents of both SF-1 and SF-2 were added, the microstructure consisted of crystal and amorphous phases, the grain size reduced to 5-40 nm, the RMS value decreased to 11.4 nm and the wear resistance improved. In addition, the hardness was as high as 638 Hv which is higher than that of commercial stainless steel mask and this improvement is probably due to the presence of amorphous Phase and fine grain size. The improvement of the wear resistance can provide a higher reliability and a longer service life.

Surface modification of Aluminum for mold by nitrogen ion implantation (질소이온주입에 의한 금형용 알루미늄의 표면개질특성)

  • The research on surface modification technology has been advanced to change the properties of engineering material. Ion implantation is a novel surface modification technology to enhance the mechanical, chemical and electronic properties of mechanical parts. In this research, nitrogen ions are implanted into aluminum for mold to improve endurance and life span. To analyze modification of surface properties, micro hardness, friction coefficient, wear resistance, contact angle, and surface roughness were measured. Hardness of ion implanted specimens was higher than untreated specimen and friction coefficient was also improved. In this experiment, it can be expected that nitrogen ion implantation can contribute to enhance the mechanical properties of material and ion implantation technology may also be applied to other materials.
