The structural vibration due to earthquake or outside impact causes serious problem for building safety. A dynamic model of a friction damper which can be constructed and installed easily is needed to reduce the vibration of the building. In this paper, the experimental equation of a circular friction damper is derived and designed for reduction of a earthquake vibration of a building. The developed experimental equation is defined to simply design the capacity on design of the circular friction damper based on the results of the performance test. Finally this experimental equation can be used for the design of a circular friction damper.

For the purpose of improving accuracy in friction and wear test, a hydraulic pin-on-disk type tribotester was developed and its performance was evaluated experimentally. The performance estimation of the tribotesrer was accomplished by comparing both the consistency of the applied normal load and the robustness of the control against the mechanical disturbances with those of the pneumatic and the dead weight loading method respectively. The developed hydraulic pin-on-disk type tribotester showed the better reliability in the performance and the hydraulic loading method provided the more accurate friction coefficient.
The driver seat of an automobile is in direct contact with the driver and provides the driver with a safe and comfortable ride. The seat consists of a frame, a rail, and many recliners. In recent years, strength and operating force measurement testing of the recliner have become vital for designing car seats. However, performance evaluation requires expensive testing equipment, numerous seat products, and considerable time. Therefore, the trend is to reduce experimentation through interpretation. This study examines the lubrication of solid lubricant for automotive seat recliners and confirms the friction and wear performance. In this study, the lubrication behavior of solid lubricants for car seat recliners is investigated to ascertain the friction and wear performance and to provide accurate values for the strength analysis. The friction material consists of a pin and a plate made from steel, which is widely used in recliners. The friction and wear under lubrication conditions are measured by a reciprocating friction wear tester. The friction coefficient is obtained according to the load and speed. Based on the obtained results, it is possible to achieve a reduction in the error of the test value and the analysis by providing the friction coefficient and wear of the lubricant. The results can be applied to the analysis of automobile seat design.
The tribological properties of paper-based friction materials are crucial to the performance of a wet clutch system. In this work, the friction and wear characteristics of a paper-based friction material in boundary lubrication state was experimentally investigated using a pin-on-reciprocating tribotester under various normal forces and temperatures. It was found that the wear rate of the friction material increased from $5.8{\times}10^{-6}mm^3/N/cycle$ to $5.5{\times}10^{-5}mm^3/N/cycle$ after 1,700 cycles of testing at $80^{\circ}C$ as normal force increased from 2 N to 7 N. The friction coefficient was also found to increase from 0.135 to 0.155 with increasing normal force from 2 N to 7 N. The increase in contact pressure with increasing normal force may be responsible for these results. In addition, as temperature increased from $20^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$, the wear rate of the friction materials increased from $2.0{\times}10^{-5}mm^3/N/cycle$ to $3.6{\times}10^{-5}mm^3/N/cycle$ while the friction coefficient decreased from 0.163 to 0.146. This result may be associated with the decrease in the hardness of friction materials with increasing temperature. Furthermore, plastic deformation on the friction materials was mainly observed after the test. The outcome of this work may be useful to gain a better understanding of the tribological properties of friction materials, and therefore can contribute to the development of friction materials with enhanced performance for wet clutch systems.

To measure springback ratio of thin sheet or plate, winding bend rig is made. It bends a specimen with keeping its curvature constant and measures the bending angles before and after release of bending load. To check the performance of the bend rig, we calculated the bending moment by two ways which are based on simple beam theory. One is that the bending moment is calculated by using the results of bending test, and the other is that the moment is calculated by using the results of tensile tests. The former may entails the effect of the friction between bending pin of the rig and the surface of specimen, but the latter does not contain any effects of the friction since the bending moment is obtained by using tensile tests. Nevertheless, the values of the two bending moment shows the same level of bending moment, which implies that the friction does not influence on the value of springback ratio in spite of the presence of friction within the cope of the test performed in this experiment.
The aim of the shaking table experiment is to verify the isolation effect of a storage liquid tank with multiple friction pendulum bearings. A 1:20 scale model of a real storage liquid tank that is widely used in the petroleum industry was examined by the shaking table test to compare its anchored base and isolated base. The seismic response of the tank was assessed by employing the time history input. The base acceleration, wave height and tank wall stress were used to evaluate the isolation effect. Finally, the influences of the bearing performance that characterizes the isolated tank, such as the friction force and residual displacement, were discussed.
Bearing friction and disturbance are the important parameters in control spacecraft using reaction wheel. In this paper, those parameters are estimated by preload and oil quantity. In order to determine the bearing preload's impact on performance, measure the disturbance and the bearing friction coefficient with increasing the preload to the allowed amount. And, find the relationship between oil quantity and bearing friction coefficient, measure it with increasing the oil amount in the bearing. With these results as a reference, find the appropriate amount of preload and oil quantity.

Friction material in a piezoelectric system is a important part to affect to moving performance. In this paper, alumina ceramics $(AlO_2)$, silicon carbide (SiC), high speed steel and super-hard alloy (WC, Tungsten Carbide) having a hardness knoop of 1000 to 2000 $kg/mm^2$ were tested as a friction material of AF module. Even though $AlO_2$, SiC and high speed steel were a high-hardness material, $AlO_2$ and SiC were worn by a rough surface, and SiC is rusted in humidity condition. AF module using super-hard alloy has showed a stable moving performance in life time test.
In practical engineering, the friction damper is a widely used energy dissipation device because of its large deformation capacity, stable energy dissipation capability, and cost effectiveness. While based on conventional friction dampers, the double-sliding friction damper (DSFD) being proposed is different in that it features two sliding friction forces, i.e., small and large sliding friction forces, rather than a single-sliding friction force of ordinary friction dampers. The DSFD starts to deform when the force sustained exceeds the small-sliding friction force, and stops deforming when the deformation reaches a certain value. If the force sustained exceeds the large sliding friction force, it continues to deform. Such a double-sliding behavior is expected to endow structures equipped with the DSFD better performance in both small and large earthquakes. The configuration and working mechanism of the DSFD is described and analyzed. Quasi-static loading tests and finite element analyses were conducted to investigate its hysteretic behavior. Finally, time history analysis of the single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) and multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems were performed to investigate the seismic performance of DSFD-equipped structures. For the purpose of comparison, tests on systems equipped with conventional friction dampers were also performed. The proposed DSFD can be realized perfectly, and the DSFD-equipped structures provide better performances than those equipped with conventional friction dampers in terms of interstory drift and floor acceleration. In particular, for the MDOF system, the DSFD helps the structural system to have a uniform distributed interstory drift.

Zinc phosphate coating is required in nearly all steel cold forging operations. However, the chemical byproducts of this lubricant system are difficult to dispose of and have a negative environmental impact. In order to replace zinc phosphate based lubricants partially or completely, candidate lubricant has been developed in this study. The performance evaluation of these lubricants was conducted using the double cup extrusion test and spike forging test. With the use of the commercial FEM code DEFORM, friction factor calibration curves, i.e. cup height ratio vs. punch stroke and spike height vs. punch stroke, were established for different friction factor values. By matching the cup height ratio and the punch stroke and spike height vs. punch stroke from experiment to that obtained from FE simulations, the friction factor of the lubricants was determined. Three water-soluble lubricants; namely, Mec Homat, Royalcoat, and the developed lubricant were found to perform comparable to or better than zinc phosphate.
