One of the chlorofluorocarbon compounds. R-12 deplete atmospheric ozone. It leads to international agreement to reduce CFC production. R-134a has similar thermodynamic properties to CFC-12. It has zero ODP(Ozone Depletion Potential). This Paper focuses on the lubricating oils for using with R-134a PAGs(Polyalkylene Glycol's) and esters are primary lubricants that are now being tested for use with R-134a Because of extreme polarity of R-134a. there are many problems in the selection of lubricating oil. This investigation analyzes compressor working conditions and calculates wear parts friction for simulation testing. Miscibility and material compatibility is proved by sealed glass tests. Friction was tested on the closed type pin on disk wear tester. This equipment simulates actual refrigerating compressor. Environment controlled test made more reliable result than field test Conventional oils(mineral oils, Alkylbenzene, PAO(Polyalpha Olefin) are immiscible with R-134a. PAGs and ester oils are miscible with R-134a. Friction coefficient is similar to conventional system(mineral oil/R-12 systems) at operating condition. At start & stop condition, PAGs/R-134a system has high friction coefficient. It provide reliable result on the lubricity, miscibility, material compatibility of R-134a with these new lubricants. It suggests proper selection of refrigeration oil that may improve compressor durability of performance.
The dynamic performance of air foil bearings relies on a coupling between a thin air film and an elastic foil structure. A number of successful analytical techniques to predict dynamic performance have been developed. However, the evaluation of its dynamic characteristic is still not enough because of the mechanical complexity of the foil structure and strong nonlinear behavior of friction force. This work presents a nonlinear transient analysis method to predict dynamic performance of foil bearings. In this method, time dependent Reynolds equation is used to calculate pressure distribution and a finite element method is used to model the bump foil structure. The analysis is treated with a direct implicit integration technique that can handle nonlinear problems and the stick-slip algorithm is used to consider friction force. Using this method the response to the mass unbalance excitation is investigated for various design parameters and operating conditions. The results of analysis show that foil bearing is very effective on the restriction of vibration at the resonance frequency compared to the rigid surface bearings and the effectiveness depends on the operating conditions, static load and a amount of mass unbalance. In addition, there exist optimum values of friction coefficient, bump foil stiffness and number of circumferential slit with regards to minimizing dynamic response at the resonance frequency. These optimum values are system dependent.
Soil-rock interface, mainly founded in Granite region of Korea, is known as one of the important factor of the slope failure at the rainfall due to smaller shear strength than soil itself. However, research of the effect on slope stability by soil-rock interfaces is insufficient. Therefore, a series of direct shear tests were performed in order to investigate the effect of soil-rock interface on slope stability. The method of tests is to get sand itself and sand-artificial rock interface shear strength from different grain size of sands and artificial rock samples. The results of tests show that the friction angle of interface depends primarily on particle size and surface roughness. Interface friction angle ratio ${\mu}(={\delta}/{\Phi})$ is in the range of 0.75 ~ 0.96, this results indicate that interface friction angle is smaller than sand itself.

In this paper, we proposed an algorithm for utilizing visual information for non-contact predicting method of friction coefficient. Coefficient of friction is very important in driving on road and traversing over obstacle. Our algorithm is based on terrain classification for visual image. The proposed method, non-contacting approach, has advantage over other methods that extract material characteristic of road by sensors contacting road surface. This method is composed of learning group(experiment, grouping material) and predicting friction coefficient group(Bayesian classification prediction function). Every group include previous work of vision. Advantage of our algorithm before entering such terrain can be very useful for avoiding slippery areas. We make experiment on measurement of friction coefficient of terrain. This result is utilized real friction coefficient as prediction method. We show error between real friction coefficient and predicted friction coefficient for performance evaluation of our algorithm.
The purposes of this study were to a analysis of friction relation between tennis outsole and tennis playing surfaces. Tennis footwear is an important component of tennis game equipment. It can support or damage players performance and comfort. Most importantly athletic shoes protect the foot preventing abrasions and injuries. Footwear stability in court sports like tennis is incredibly important since it is estimated that as many as 45% of all lower extremity injuries occur in the foot and ankle. The friction force is the force exerted by a surface as an object moves across it or makes an effort to move across it. The friction force opposes the motion of the object. Friction results when two surfaces are pressed together closely, causing attractive intermolecular forces between the molecules of the two different surfaces. The outsole provides traction and reduces wear on the midsole. Today's outsoles address sport specific movements (running versus pivoting) and playing surface types. Different areas of the outsole are designed for the distinct frictional needs of specific movements. Traction created by the friction between the outsole and the surface allows the shoe to grip the surface. As surfaces, conditions and player motion change, traction may need to vary. An athletic shoe needs to grip well when running but not when pivoting. Laboratory tests have demonstrated force reductions compared to impact on concrete. There is a correlation between pain, injury and surface hardness. These are a variety of traction patterns on the soles of athletic shoes. Traction like any other shoe characteristic must be commensurate and balanced with the sport. The equal and opposite force does not necessarily travel back up your leg. The surface itself absorbs a portion of the force converting it to other forms of energy. Subsequently, tennis court surfaces are rated not only for pace but also for the percentage of force reduction.

The drag and heat transfer reduction phenomena and degradation effects of drag reducing polymer solutions which are known as the viscoelastic fluids are investigated experimentally for the turbulent circular tube flows. Two stainless steel tubes are used for the experimental flow loops. Aqueous solutions of Polyacrylamide Separan AP-273 with concentrations from 300 to 1000 wppm are used as working fluids. Flow loops are set up to measure the friction factors and heat transfer coefficients of test tubes in the once-through system and the recirculating flow system. Test tubes are heated by power supply directly to apply constant heat flux boundary conditions on the wall. Capillary tube viscometer and falling ball viscometer are used to measure the viscous characteristics of fluids and the characteristic relaxation time of a fluid is determined by the Powell-Eyring model. The order of magnidude of the thermal entrance length of a drag reducing polymer solution is close to the order of magnitude of the laminar entrance length of Newtonian fluids. Dimensionless heat transfer coefficients of the viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluids may be represented as a function of flow behavior index n and newly defined viscoelastic Graetz number. As degradation continues viscosity and the characteristic relaxation time of the testing fluids decrease and heat transfer coefficients increase. The characteristic relaxation time is used to define the Weissenberg number and variations of friction factors and heat transfer coefficients due to degradation are presented in terms of the Weissenberg number.

Engine torque is transferred to the transmission where drag torque is minimized improving fuel efficiency. This is particularly true in a wet clutch pack. This study measures slip friction when the wet clutch pack in a DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission) is disengaged, and the friction pads are slipping. Shudder engagement velocity, and applied forces can be measured under various working conditions through these torque transfer experiments. Test results demonstrate that the design parameters, and engagement conditions of wet clutch packs can be optimized to reduce shudder and frictional vibration during engagement in a dual clutch transmission.

The performance of refrigerant oil at the thrust bearing and at the journal bearing of a scroll compressor is a significant factor. This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano-fluid with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and nano powders. The particle size distribution and oxidation stability of nano powders prepared by the electrical explosion method were analyzed by TEM and BET. It was found that the nanoparticles showed a spherical morphology with sizes ranging of 40-60 nm and were covered with graphite layers of 2-4 nm. The thermal conductivity of POE oil was 0.1-0.5W/mk higher than that of POE oil. The coefficient of friction of Cu-POE was found to be 0.1 higher than that of Al2O3. The cooling capacity of the heat pump with nanofluid increased to 3.67%, and the performance was improved by 5.83%.

The friction is inevitable and unpredictable phenomena, so most mechanical systems are designed to low friction effect by using bearings and lubricants. However, the slip-stick actuator applies the friction force to its movement. The slip-stick mechanism is applied the piezoelectric actuator to overcome short displacement. Fast response of piezoelectric actuator is also good characteristic for the slip-stick mechanism. However, the piezoelectric actuator with slip-stick mechanism isn't common, because its cost and driving voltage are too high. In this paper, a voice-coil actuator with slip-stick mechanism is introduced. The cost and the driving voltage of a voice-coil actuator are much less than the piezoelectric actuator. And a dynamic vibration amplifier is proposed to adjust the dynamic performance of the actuator. By the results of numerical analysis, the feasibility of a dynamic vibration amplifier is verified.

In this study, the performance test was carried out under various operation conditions targeting four representing types of lubricant which are mostly used in nuclear power plants, and mutually compared the characteristic and performance of lubricant. Especially, introducing the concept of the thread friction coefficient (hereinafter, TFC), which makes the friction relation between the stem nut and stem screw dimensionless. The test was performed to compare the lubricant performance for the four kinds of lubricant (Texaco, Alvania, Mobilux, MOVLL). In a test of the room temperature stem, the TFC of MOV Long Life shows the lowest value, next to Alvania EP2, Texaco EP2, and Mobilux EP0 in that order. And in a test of the high temperature stem, the TFC of Texaco EP2 shows the lowest, next to MOV Long Life, Alvania EP2, and Mobilux EP0 in that order. From the test result of the aging condition, three types of lubricant (MOV LL, Texaco EP2, Alvania EP2) show similar patterns up to 36 months, but in 60 months, the TFC of lubricant are increased rapidly.
