  • In this study, water treatment sludge carbonized with $400^{\circ}C$ was tested as an adsorbent for the removal of Pb and Cd in water. The carbonized sludge was characterized by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and surface area analysis. Carbonized sludge exhibited much higher specific surface area and total pore volume than water treatment sludge itself. In batch-type adsorption process, carbonized sludge represented better adsorption performance for Pb than Cd, achieving 90~98% at the concentrations conducted in the experiments. Equilibrium data of adsorption were analyzed using the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. It was seen that both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms have correlation coefficient $R^2$ value larger than 0.95. The results of studies indicated that carbonized water treatment sludge by heat treatment could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of Pb and Cd from water.

  • The effects of various factors such as adsorption temperature, interstitial velocity, species and concentration of adsorbates(benzene and toluene) and aspect ratio(L/D) on adsorption characteristics were investigated in a fixed bed with activated carbon. The breakthrough time in a fixed bed was decreased with the increasing of adsorption temperature, interstitial velocity and concentration of adsorbates. The interstitial velocity, concentration of adsorbates and adsorption temperature had influenced considerably upon the MTZ(mass transfer zone) and LUB(length of unused bed) obtained through the breakthrough curves, while aspect ratio(L/D) had smaller effect than former factors. Especially, the concentration of adsorbates among factors have the largest effect on MTZ and LUB. From comparison with the model isotherms, such as the Langmuir, Freundlich and Langmuir-Freundlich, the experimental isotherm data of benzene and toluene agreed farily well to three adsorption isotherm models.

  • Lead(II) removal efficiency by natural kaolinite was investigated through laboratory experiments. This study was conducted in two phases-sorption and desorption. In the adsorption study, the influence of sorption kinetics and sorption isotherm and various parameters such as pH, temperature, coexisting other heavy metal ions on the lead adsorption was investigated. And desorption study was carried out in order to find the re-usability of kaolinite as an adsorbent. The results of the study are as follows. 1. Sorption kinetics was investigated under the condition of 2.5 mg/l adsorbent concentration, pH 6.5$\pm$0.05, temperature $30\pm 0.5\circ$C, initial lead(II) concentration 25 mg/l. Adsorption rate was initially rapid and the extent of adsorption arrived at adsorption equilibrium with 73% adsorption efficiency in an hour. 2. The sorption isotherm experiment was made with different initial lead(II) concentration. A linearized Freundlich equation was used to fit the acquired experimental data. As a result, Freundlich constants, the sorption intensity (1/n) was 0.47 and the measure of sorption (k) was 2.44. So, it was concluded that sorption of lead(II) by kaolinite is effective. 3. The effect of pH on lead(II) sorption by kaolinite shows that at a pH of 3, only 6% of the total lead(II) was adsorbed and at a pH 9, 97% of the lead(II) was removed. And the effect of temperature on lead(II) sorption by kaolinite shows that as the temperature increased, the amount of lead(II) sorption per unit weight of kaolinite increased. But the effect was minor (p<0.05). 4. Sorption isotherm of lead coexisting cadmium (II) or zinc (II) was lower than that of lead itself. It was caused by the result of competitive sorption to adsorption site. And there was no difference between the sorption isotherm of cadmium and zinc. 5. In desorption studies, only 5.12% desorption took place in distilled water, while 52.08% in 0.1 N hydrochloric acid. Consequently used kaolinite could be regenerated by hydrochoric acid.

  • This study investigates the adsorption capacity of the gibbsite and the clay on the development of admixed liner. The gibbsite is produced as a by-product in the pretreatment process for cleaning and coloring of Alurninurn sash. From the study, following conclusions were obtained: 1) The adsorption of metals such as Cu(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) and phenol on gibbsite and l:entonite was equilibrated rather quickly(12 ~48 hrs ). 2) The rate and extent of adsorption is a function of surface area the adsorbent having. 3) The Larigmuir isotherm is found to be more suitable than Freundlich isotherm for the adsorption analysis of heavy metals on gibbsite and bentonite. 4) In case of phenol, Freundlich isotherm, whose N value is close to 1, i.e., close to linear isotherm, is more fit to describe the adsorption on gibbsite and bentonite. 5) The amount of metals and phenol adsorbed is found to be in the following order : Adsorbent : $2{\mu}m-Al(OH)_3$ > Mixed Solid > $12{\mu}m-Al(OH)_3$ > Na-Bentonite > $30{\mu}m-Al(OH)_3$

  • Kinetic and isotherm properties of the cadmium adsorption onto calcium sand and granite soil were evaluated by batch experiments. The pHs of calcium sand and granite soil were 9.51 and 6.33, respectively, showing that the precipitation of heavy metals can be occurred due to the increase of pH when the calcium sand is used as an adsorbent. The pseudo-second-order model described the adsorption kinetics satisfactory with correlation coefficients over 0.999. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of calcium sand and granite soil were 2.10 and 2.16 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption isotherm followed the Freundlich isotherm model, indicating the cadmium adsorbed onto the heterogeneous surfaces of adsorbents.

  • The removal of phosphate from surface water is becoming increasingly vital to prevent problems such as eutrophication, particularly near urban areas. Recent requirements to reduce high concentrations of phosphate rely on physicochemical methods and adsorbents that must be effective even under strict conditions. The phosphate removal efficiencies of two adsorbents, Fe-Mn-Si oxide and Fe-Mn oxide, were investigated and the data used to compare kinetics and isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacities of the two adsorbents were 47.8 and 35.5 mg-$PO{_4}^{3-}/g$, respectively. Adsorptions in both cases were highly pH dependent; i.e., when the pH increased from 3 to 9, the average adsorption capacities of the two adsorbents decreased approximately 32.7 % and 20.3 %, respectively. The Freundlich isotherm model fitted the adsorption of Fe-Mn-Si oxide more closely than did the Langmuir model. Additionally, anionic solutions decreased adsorption because of competition with the anions in the adsorbing phosphate. Although affected by the presence of competing anions or a humic substance, Fe-Mn-Si oxide has better adsorption capacity than Fe-Mn oxide.

  • This study investigated on the adsorption and photocatalysis of Reactive Black 5(RB5) by the hydroxyapatite(HAP)/Titanium dioxide($TiO_{2}$) media. The adsorption of RB5 on $TiO_{2}$, HAP and $TiO_{2}$/HAP was investigated during a series of batch adsorption experiments. The amounts adsorbed at equilibrium were measured. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were tested for their applicability. The result of equilibrium studies of $TiO_{2}$, HAP and $TiO_{2}$/HAP adsorbent were found to follow Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorbed amounts(Qmax) were found to be 5.28mg/g on single $TiO_{2}$, 12.45mg/g on single HAP and 9.03mg/g on $TiO_{2}$/HAP, respectively. The experimental data were analysed using the pseudo-first-order adsorption and photocatalysis kinetic models. According to these models, RB5 degradation by $TiO_{2}$/HAP was affected by interaction effect of photocatalysis and adsorption.

  • The adsorption process using GAC is one of the most secured methods to remove of phosphate from solution. This study was conducted by impregnating Cu(II) to GAC(GAC-Cu) to enhance phosphate adsorption for GAC. In the preparation of GAC-Cu, increasing the concentration of Cu(II) increased the phosphate uptake, confirming the effect of Cu(II) on phosphate uptake. A pH experiment was conducted at pH 4-8 to investigate the effect of the solution pH. Decrease of phosphate removal efficiency was found with increase of pH for both adsorbents, but the reduction rate of GAC-Cu slowed, indicating electrostatic interaction and coordinating bonding were simultaneously involved in phosphate removal. The adsorption was analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm to determine the maximum phosphate uptake(qm) and adsorption mechanism. According to correlation of determination(R2), Freundlich isotherm model showed a better fit than Langmuir isotherm model. Based on the negative values of qm, Langmuir adsorption constant(b), and the value of 1/n, phosphate adsorption was shown to be unfavorable and favorable for GAC and GAC-Cu, respectively. The attempt of the linearization of each isotherm obtained very poor R2. Batch kinetic tests verified that ~30% and ~90 phosphate adsorptions were completed within 1h and 24 h, respectively. Pseudo second order(PSO) model showed more suitable than pseudo first order(PFO) because of higher R2. Regardless of type of kinetic model, GAC-Cu obtained higher constant of reaction(K) than GAC.

  • Mango shell (MS) and mango shell activated carbon (MSAC) was used to adsorb crude oil from water at various experimental conditions. The MSAC was prepared by carbonization at $450^{\circ}C$ and chemical activation using strong $H_3PO_4$ acid. The adsorbents were characterized with Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. Investigations carried out included the effects of parametric variations of different adsorbate dose, adsorbent dose, time, temperature, pH and mixing speed on the adsorption of crude oil. The equilibrium isotherm for the adsorption process was determined using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin Radushkevich isotherm models. Temkin isotherm was found to fit the equilibrium data reasonably well than others. The result demonstrated that MSAC was more effective for crude oil adsorption than raw mango shell. Optimum conditions were also presented. The enhanced effect from activation was justified statistically using Analysis of Variance and Bonferroni-Holm Posthoc significance test. The pseudo first order kinetics gave a better fit for crude oil adsorption with both MS and MSAC.

  • The adsorption characteristics of Tharonil on granular activated carbon were experimentally investigated in an adsorber and in a packed column. It was estabilished that the adsorption equilibrium of Tharonil on granular activated carbon was more successfully fitted by Freundlich isotherm equation than Langmuir isotherm equation in the concentration range from 1 to 1000 mg/1. Intraparticle diffusivities (pore and surface diffusivity) of Tharonil were estimated by the concentration-time curve and adsorption isotherm. The estimated values of pore diffusivity and surface diffusivity are $6.70{\times}10^{-6}$ and $2.0{\times}10^{-9}cm^2/s$, respectively. From comparison of intraparticle diffusivities, it was found that surface diffusion was the limiting step for adsorption rate. The break time and breakthrough curve predicted by constant pattern-linear driving force model were shown to agree with the experimental results.
