The response of the freshwater microalga Chlorella vulgaris to mercuric ion ($Hg^{2+}$) stress was examined using chlorophyll a fluorescence image analysis and O-J-I-P analysis as a way to monitor the toxic effects of mercury on water ecosystems. The levels of photosynthetic pigments, such as chlorophyll a and b and carotenoids, decreased with increasing $Hg^{2+}$ concentration. The maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II(Fv/Fm) changed remarkably with increasing $Hg^{2+}$ concentration and treatment time. In particular, above $200{\mu}M\;Hg^{2+}$, considerable mercury toxicity was seen within 2 h. The chlorophyll a fluorescence transient O-J-I-P was also remarkably affected by $Hg^{2+}$; the fluorescence emission decreased considerably in steps J, I, and P with an increase in $Hg^{2+}$ concentration when treated for 4 h. Subsequently, the JIP-test parameters (Fm, Fv/Fo, RC/CS, TRo/CS, ETo/CS, ${\Phi}_{PO}$, ${\Psi}_O$ and ${\Phi}_{EO}$) decreased with increasing $Hg^{2+}$ concentration, while N, Sm, ABS/RC, DIo/RC and DIo/CS increased. Therefore, a useful biomarker for investigating mercury stress in water ecosystems, and the parameters Fm, ${\Phi}_{PO}$, ${\Psi}_O$, and RC/CS can be used to monitor the environmental stress in water ecosystems quantitatively.
In Korea. many people enjoy eating raw or underkooked freshwater crayfish and crabs which unfortunately may cause paragonimiasis. Here, we describe a case of pulmonary and abdominal paragonimiasis in a 9-year-old girl, who presented with a 1-month history of abdominal pain, especially in the right flank and the right inguinal area, with anorexia. A chest radiograph revealed pleural effusion in both lungs, and her abdominal sonography indicated an inflammatory lesion in the right psoas muscle. Peripheral blood analysis of the patient showed hypereosinophilia (66.0%) and an elevated total serum lgE level (>2,500 IU/ml). The pleural effusion tested by ELISA were also positive for antibodies against paragonimiasis. Her dietary history stated that she had ingested raw freshwater crab, 4 months previously. The diagnosis was pulmonary paragonimiasis accompanied by abdominal muscle involvement. She was improved after 5 cycles of praziquantel treatment and 2 times of pleural effusion drainage. In conclusion, herein, we report a case of pulmonary and abdominal paragonimiasis in a girl who presented with abdominal pain and tenderness in the inguinal area.

Maintenance of a beneficial microbial community, especially in the rhizosphere, is indispensable for plant growth and agricultural sustainability. In this sense, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have been extensively studied for their role in plant growth promotion and disease resistance. However, the impact of introducing PGPR strains into rhizosphere microbial communities is still underexplored. We previously found that the Proteus vulgaris JBLS202 strain (JBLS202) promoted growth of Kimchi cabbage and altered the relative abundance of total bacteria and Pseudomonas spp. in the treated rhizosphere. To extend these findings, we used pyrosequencing to analyze the changes in bacterial communities in the rhizosphere of Kimchi cabbage after introduction of JBLS202. The alterations were also evaluated by taxon-specific realtime PCR (qPCR). The pyrosequencing data revealed an increase in total bacteria abundance, including specific groups such as Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria, in the treated rhizosphere. Time-course qPCR analysis confirmed the increase in the abundance of Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Betaproteobacteria. Furthermore, genes involved in nitrogen cycling were upregulated by JBLS202 treatment indicating changes in ecological function of the rhizosphere soil. Overall, these results indicate that introduction of JBLS202 alters both the composition and function of the rhizosphere bacterial community, which can have direct and indirect effects on plant growth. Therefore, we propose that long-term changes in bacterial composition and community-level function need to be considered for practical use of PGPRs.

The study was performed to apply the algae removal system to coagulation-filtration process for minimize the damage to screen interruption of water treatment plants and died of fish by algae bloom on freshwater. Sample used Nokdong river water and Alkalinity, turbidity, chlorophyll-a and pH measured using Jar test and drum filter for coagulation-filtration process to determine optimum coagulation condition. A jar test apparatus and laboratory reactor were used in this study. The highest removal efficiency was observed when condition of flocculation time, coagulant dosage, drum filter rpm and chlorophyll-a concentration were to be 5min, 5mg/ℓ, 3rpm and 90㎍/ℓ, respectively. The average removal efficiencies measured of chlorophyll-a and turbidity using Alum were 50~60% and 30~50%, respectively. PAC was more effective than Alum in removal chlorophyll-a about 20%.

Purpose: Paragonimiasis is infectious disease occurred by Paragonimus Westermani, which invades into human body as a final host. Habitual eating the freshwater crab or crawfish unboiled is one of the reason of infection. Paragonimiasis raged in 1970s in Korea, Japan, China and other Asian countries but the incidence decreased rapidly. Once people eat infected second host, parasite penetrates the duodenal wall and migrates to the lung. During this migration period, the parasite can migrate to other organ, such as brain, spinal cord, liver and subcutaneous tissue, but the cases are rarely reported. The objective of our study is to present our experience of the ectopic migration of parasite to the subcutaneous tissue of the abdomen, which was easily treated with excision and Praziquantel medication. Methods: A 59-year-old woman who likes eating unboiled freshwater crab was diagnosed as Paragonimiasis 15 months ago. Her symptoms were fever and cough, and she was treated with Praziquantel medication. 3 months after discharge, she visited our hospital with left pleuritic chest pain, cough with fever, and palpable mass formation on left lower quadrant of the abdomen. Wedge resection of the left lung and Praziquantel medication was maintained for a week. Nevertheless, fever persisted after the treatment. The patient received total excision of the abdominal soft tissue mass, and the fever was relieved. Results: Pathologic findings of the mass showed multiple cyst and abscess formation with crystal structure which is suspicious parts of the parasite or calcified egg shells. Uncontrolled fever was relieved after the operation, and there was no evidence of recurrent Paragonimiasis and ectopic migration for 1 year follow up period. Conclusion: Ectopic migration of Paragonimus is rare, but multiple organ can be involved. Patient with Paragominiasis who was refractory in fever control after Praziquantel medication or surgical evaluation of the lung should be considered as ectopic migration of the Paragonimiasis.
Zooplankton is essential biological assemblage in understanding the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems, since it plays as a linkage between primary producers and higher trophic level organisms such as fish. Although zooplankton has planktonic characteristics, the sampling and treatment methods for its community analyses are more complicated and variable compared with phytoplankton due to its high diversity in body size and species-specific depth selection behaviors. In the present paper, we reviewed representative classical methods for field sampling and treatments of freshwater zooplankton in relation with quantification of its community structure, and suggested appropriate methods depending on various research objectives.

The process of concrete production consumes an immense volume of water, with approximately one billion metric tons of freshwater being utilized for tasks such as aggregate washing, fresh concrete production, and concrete curing. The accessibility of clean water for the public is hindered by the limited availability of water resources, primarily due to the rapid expansion of industries such as tanneries, stone quarries, and concrete manufacturing. These industries not only consume substantial amounts of freshwater but also generate significant volumes of various types of waste. Therefore, the use of fresh water in concrete production should be minimized. Few studies have reviewed the production of concrete using wastewater to derive practical and applicable findings for the industry. Thus, this study thoroughly explores the physical and chemical effects of wastewater on concrete, examining aspects like durability, hardened properties, and rheological characteristics. It identifies key factors that can compromise concrete properties when exposed to wastewater. The scarcity of research on integrating wastewater into concrete production underscores the urgent necessity for innovative approaches and methodologies in this field. While the inclusion of wash water typically reduces the workability of fresh concrete, it often enhances its compressive strength. Notably, significant improvements have been observed when using tertiary processed wastewater, wash water, polyvinyl alcohol-based wash water (PVAW), and reclaimed water in the concrete mixing process. The application of tertiary treatment to wastewater resulted in a notable enhancement of compressive strength, showing increases of up to 7%. In contrast, wastewater treated through secondary methods experienced a decline in strength ranging from 9% to 18% over a period of six months. However, the use of reclaimed wastewater demonstrated an improvement in strength by 8% to 17%, depending on the concentration level ranging from 25% to 100%. In contrast, the utilization of secondary processed wastewater and industrial water has a minimal impact on the concrete's strength.

To diminish the levels of organic matters, a novel S-CROM (continuous removal of organic matters in the stream system using freshwater bivalve), was developed and applied to the polluted stream discharging from the wastewater treatment plant, Pocheon stream, Pocheon city (Korea). Major pollutants of the stream were human population and industrial wastewaters. The study was conducted at a small dam constructed within the stream, often called 'bo', and designed with four tanks; no mussels and no sediment (negative control), no mussels and sediment (positive control), 30 mussels and sediment (D1), and 60 mussels and sediment (D2). Physicochemical and biological parameters were measured at 12 hours interval (day and night) after mussel stocking. Results indicated that Anodonta woodiana Lea (D2) clearly removed approximately 72% of chl-$\alpha$ and 57% of suspended solids on second day, however, there were no differences in removal activities between animal densities (P>0.5). Dislike a laboratory CROM system, which previously developed, there were no huge release of nutrient ($NH_3$-N and SRP), due perhaps to the higher flow rate and the lower animal density. Therefore, we may suggest that if we can determine the relevant current and the animal density considering the stream state, an S-CROM system has a strong potential to water quality improvement of eutrophic streams. Some characteristics on both CROM and S-CROM were compared.
Growth inhibition of Microcystis aeruginosa was examined with single-or mixed treatment of algicidal bacterium Streptomyces neyagawensis and heterotrich ciliate Stentor roeseli, which isolated from natural freshwater. The harmful Cyanobac-terium, Microcystis aeruginosa density was effectively suppressed by the algicidal bacterium Streptomyces neyagawensis, and the bacterial biomass was few changed. The heterotrich ciliate S, roegeji isolated from the eutrophic Pal'tang riverine, Korea suppressed the algal biomass effectively. But mixed-treatment of both bio-agents was less effective, leading to an increase in algal density.
To examine the algicidal effect of co-treatment of biological control agent on centric diatom Stephanodiscus hantzschii in the filtered water, an endemic algicidal bacterium (Pseudomonas putida) and a heterotrich ciliate (Stentor roselli) were iso-lated from Pal'tang reservoir, Korea. Bacterial isolate and ciliate removed 98% and 80% of the diatom for 7 days of cultivation. Co-treatments of these two agents perfectly inhibited the diatom growth, compared to the single treatment of each agent. This synergistic interaction of the bacterium and ciliate could provide an effective tool in the biomanipulation to control the diatom bloom in freshwater lakes and streams.
