  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of planting date and planting density on the growth and yield characters of yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia POEPP) and to establish cultivation method in the middle region of Korea. An introduced variety of yacon was used. Seeding dates were from April 5 to April 7,and seedlings were trasplanted three times on the May 25, june 5, and June 15 with the intervals of 10 days. Planting densities were 80(width) $\times$ 35(distance) cm, 80 $\times$ 45cm, and 80 $\times$ 55cm. Plant height was not significant among planting dates, but was longer in the order of 80 $\times$ 55cm, 80 $\times$ 35cm, and 80 $\times$ 35cm among planting densities. Fresh weight of top part was heavier as the planting dates were faster and planting densities were narrower. Total yeid of tuber had no significant among planting dates and was higher in the density with 80 $\times$ 45cm and had the same tendency in the yeild of commercial goods. Correlation coefficient between plant height and yeild of commercial goods was highly positive(r= 0.927**).

  • In order to determine the influence of nitrogen on agronomic characters, forage yield and quality, Jeju Italian millet(Setaria italica Beauvis) was grown on the volcanic ash soil at the Experimental Farm of Cheju national university under the six levels of nitrogen rates (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250kg/ha) from May 1, 2000 to August 25, 2000. Days to heading was delayed 92∼98 days as nitrogen rate increased. Plant height was 96cm at 0kg N/ha. as N rate increased, grew gradually, was 134cm at 200kg N/ha, 135cm at 250kg N/ha, and was not significantly affected between the two plots. Fresh forage, dry matter, crude protein and TDN yield increased 18.88∼42.82MT/ha, 8.45 ∼12.25MT/ha, 0.76∼1.59MT/ha and 4.32∼6.79MT/ha, respectively, as the increasing of N rate, but were not significant between 200kg N/ha and 250kg N/ha. As N rate increased, crude protein, crude fat, NFE and TDN content increased 9.0∼13.0%, 1.4∼1.7%, 9% and 51.1∼55.5%, respectively, but crude ash and crude fiber content decreased 8.7∼8.2% and 34.9∼30.2%, respectively.

  • Forage productivity of Job's tears (Coix lachryma-jobi L.) and adlay (C. lachryma-jobi var. mayuen (ROMAN.) STAPF) and a hybrid corn (Kwangog) and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Pioneer 988) was compared in the southern part of Korea where black streaked dwarf virus' (BSDV) is prevalent. Emergence of Job's tears and adlay was more delayed compared to a corn or sorghum-sudangrass hybrid under the drought field conditions. Early growth and regrowth of Job's tears and adlay were less than those of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. Fresh weight, dry weight, and digestible dry matter of Job's tears and adlay cut once approximately 40 days after flowering were much higher than those of two cuts at every flowering stage. Dry weight of one-cut Job's tears and ad lay harvested 40 days after flowering was similar to the total dry weight of three-cut sorghum-sudangrass hybrid but higher than that of silage corn. Digestible dry matter production was greater in the order of sorghum-sudangrass, corn, one-cut and two-cut Job's tears and adlay. Corn was severely infected with BSDV, but digestible dry matter was relatively high due to its higher in vitro dry matter digestibility. Among the Job's tears and adlay varieties, a variety of Job's tears with globular fruit shape was best for forage production due to its taller plant height, thick stem, wider leaf blades, higher leaf blade/total dry weight ratio, and higher forage yield. However, hulled grain yield of ad lay varieties was higher than that of Job's tears due to a higher hulled/rough grain ratio although they had similar rough grain yields.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of seeding rates on the forage quality and productivity of direct-seeded whole crop rice at the experimental field of the Grassland and Forages Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA from 2007 to 2008. Whole crop rice variety, "Nokyang", developed by the National Institute of Crop Science, was directly seeded with four different seeding rates (30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha). There were no significant differences (p<0.05) found in emergence date, heading date, greenish and disease resistance based on the seeding rates. Plant height increased at higher seeding rates but the tiller number per plant decreased (p<0.05). The dry matter (DM) content showed no significant difference based on seeding rates (p<0.05) while the yield of fresh and dry matter increased with incremented seeding rates (p<0.05). Acid detergent fiber (ADF) content increased with higher seeding rates, but the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content did not show a similar tendency. The total digestible nutrient (TDN) content was lowest with 120 kg/ha seeding rate. The grain ratio decreased at higher seeding rates. In economic analysis, the plot seeded at a rate of 60 kg/ha showed the highest income increment. Although high seeding rates increased the DM yield, a seeding rate of 60 kg/ha is recommended as the proper seeding rate for direct-seeded whole crop rice.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of onion cultivation under paddy and upland condition on the yield and storage of onion bulbs. In comparison of soil conditions, nitrogen, phosphate, potassium content and average temperature in upland condition were higher than those of paddy condition, but calcium, magnesium, sodium and water content in paddy condition were higher than those of upland condition. The growth of aerial part was better in upland cultivated condition. It showed that bulb formation in paddy cultivated condition was faster during in early growth stage, but was slower during in late growth stage. Average bulb size and weight were higher in upland cultivated condition, but dry weight per 100 g fresh weight and bulb hardness were higher in paddy cultivated condition. Sugar contents, inorganic compounds, nitrogen, phosphate and potassium content of onion were higher in upland cultivated condition, but calcium, magnesium and sodium content of onion were higher in paddy cultivated condition. In distribution of onion bulb size, most of large sized onions were produced in upland cultivated condition. Average bulb production for seed harvesting were $63{\sim}70%$ higher in paddy cultivated condition than that of upland cultivated condition. The rotted rate of onion was about $27.2{\sim}34.6%$ in paddy, $37.5{\sim}51.4%$ in upland cultivated condition respectively, showed favorable result as the difference of $8.7{\sim}24.2%$ in paddy cultivated condition.

  • To establish law-put fertilization technique and increase of fertilization efficiency during cultivation of plastic film mulching for plastic the improvement of soil properties, nutrition efficiency and yield by banded subsoil fertilization (BSF) using band spoty applicator was conducted at radish (Raphanus sativus L.) field in Honan Agricultural Research Institute from 1997 to 1998 for 2 years. These results were as follows. T-N, available $P_2O_5$ exchangeable Ca and K contents of soil were increased those of before experiment especially in BSF treatment. Also, the content of soil $NO_3-N$ was higher in BSF as fertilization amount is increasing than in CF (conventional fertilization). Uptake amounts of nitrogen fertilized were high in BSF during overall the growth period of plant and N utilization was high by $21.9{\sim}30.4%$ in BSF compared to in CF. The rate of fertilizer loss by rainfall was largely reduced, because all fertilizer applied was putted around the root zone. The total yields of fresh radish BSF treatments were more increased $13{\sim}37%$ than that of CF treatment.

  • This study is to compare irrigation efficiency between sap flow sensor automated system (SF) and conventional irrigation system based on integrated solar radiation automated system (ISR) in tomato rockwool hydroponics. Total irrigated volumes was higher in the ISR system by 5.0L per plant, a lower drainage rate was found in the SF system, compared to the ISR system. There was no difference in shoot and fruit fresh weights, water use efficiency (WUE) and water amount consumed for producing 200g of tomato fruit. The daily average sap flow density (SFD) was closer to the change of solar irradiance (SI) in the plant grown under the SF system, compared to the ISR system. The correlation coefficient (r2) between the fruit diameter and the volumetric water content during the 56 and 82 days after transplant showed the SF treatment was higher than the ISR at night and daytime, and the correlation was higher at night time. The sap flow density and humidity deficit (HD) of SF treatment was related as closely as the solar irradiance. Further studies should demonstrate that SF irrigation system is a convenient method for hydroponic farmers with advantages, such as growth, higher yield, WUE, and accuracy.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of organic fertilizer on growth characteristics, saponin contents and antioxident activity of Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix roots for organic farming. As basal fertilizers, chemical fertilizer, mixed organic fertilizer, bacterial cultures and fermented oil cake and decomposed manure were treated based on 3 kg/10a level before transplanting Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix. In root length, when chemical fertilizer plot and mixed organic fertilizer plot were treated, root length was recorded the highest scores (25.3 and 24.0 cm) Root width was recorded the highest score (26.6 cm) in chemical fertilizer plot. The number of fine-roots was the highest in mixed organic fertilizer plot and chemical fertilizer plot (20.0 and 17.0), respectively. Fresh weight, which affects directly yield, was the highest in organic fertilizer plot (55.7 g/plant). The content of Platycodin D was shown to 327.4~373.8 mg/100 g, the highest values were observed in organic fertilizer plot. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were recorded the highest scores (15.5 and 15.3 mg/g, respectively) in organic fertilizer plot. In this study we confirmed that application of organic fertilizer was effective to increase yield and pharmacological effect through increase of the number of fine-roots with high saponin contents.

  • This study was conducted to dentify the optimum plantlet type of 'Solara' potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) for growth in an aeroponics system. Plantlets of 'Solara' were transplanted on March 16, 2015 in a greenhouse, and growth and yield characteristics were investigated at 70 and 78 days after transplanting, respectively. Stem length was shorter in plantlet of 15-day-old stem cuttings and acclimatization of culture, and the stem length of plantlets of stem cuttings tended to increase with increasing stem cutting age. The fresh weight of plants was the highest in the plantlets of 40-day-old stem cuttings and the lowest in non-rooted stem cuttings and acclimatization of culture. The highest number of first stolons was obtained in 35-day-old stem cuttings. The number of second stolons was the highest in plantlets of 35-day-old stem cuttings, acclimatization of culture, and 30- day-old stem cuttings. The total number of tubers was higher in plantlets of 35-day-old stem cuttings and acclimatization of culture, and the number of tubers above 3 g was the highest in plantlets of 35-day-old stem cuttings. The weight of tubers above 3 g was the heaviest in plantlets of 35-day-old stem cuttings(1,947 g per 10 plants), followed by plantlets of 30-day-old stem cuttings. These results indicate that plantlets of 30 to 35-day-old stem cuttings could be the best for production of 'Solara' potato tubers in an aeroponics system.
