  • Waste nutrient solution (WNS) that composed of nutrient solution of horticultural research institute in Japan and used for culture tomato in perlite hydroponics showed $1.9{\sim}2.4$ dS/m of EC and $5.5{\sim}7.1$ of pH. Although $NH_{4}^+$-N concentration of WNS decreased remarkably, the others did not change significantly as compared with supplied solution. The growth characteristics such as plant height, stem diameter, leaf length, and leaf width were increased as amount of compost was increased in 1 L WNS supply treatment. But there was not any regular tendency on growth characteristics in 2 L/plant WNS supply treatment. The chlorophyll content of tomato leaf was highest in I L/plant WNS supply and 4,000 kg/10a compost treatment. The fresh and dry weight, and yield of tomato fruit also increased with increase of amount of WNS and compost, and they were highest in 1 L WNS supply and 4,000 kg/10a compost treatment. The sugar content of tomato fruits was not influenced by amount of WNS and compost, fructose and glucose and total sugar was highest in 2 L/plant WNS supply and 2,000 kg/10a compost treatment. Therefore fertigation culture used WNS is environmentally friendly and can guarantee yield and quality of tomato fruits and growth of tomato plants.

  • This experiments were carried out to determine growth characteristics, dry matter yield and voluntary intake of silage according to growth stage of Sorghum$\times$sudangrass(SSH) hybrid in mono-cropping and inter-cropping(C; com, T1; cutting of SSH at milk stage. T2; cutting of SSH at dough stage, T3; cutting of SSH at yellow ripe stage, T4; cutting of SSH and soybean at milk stage, T5; cutting of SSH and soybean at dough stage, T6: cutting of SSH and soybean at yellow ripe stage). Results obtained from these experiments are as follows; Plant length and leaf length of SSH(T2, T3, T4. T5 and T6)) were higher than C. T1 treatment was lower than it. C showed $2.3\~2.9$ times higher stem diameter as 29.5mm compare to SSH(T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6). soybean(T4, T5 and T6) was lower in $4.3\~5.4$ times. But SSH of inter-cropping treatment(T4, T5 and T6) showed highly comparing with mono-cropping(T1, T2 and T3) at the same maturity. Leaf rate and stem hardness of SSH(T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6) were lower than C. The fresh yield was high line with T2(72,320kg/ha), T1(69,103kg/ha), T3(68,333kg/ha) and C(57,988kg/ha), dry matter yield was high in line with T3(22.413kg/ha), T2(21,479kg/ha), C(19,252kg/ha) and T6(18,175kg/ha), (P<0.05). Protein dry matter yield was higher in T3(1,434kg/ha), C(1,386kg/ha)T5 and T6(1,345kg/ha) it was lower in T1(872kg/ha), (P<0.05). Crude protein of silage of T4 and T5 was higher than C, T2 and T3 were lower than it(P<0.05), while NDF content was not different. ADF content of T6 was higher than those of the other treatment. The highest hemi-cellulose among treatments was shown in T1 whereas T6 showed the lowest. Fresh intake of silge was 160.4, 155.8, 168.7, 172.9, 132.9, 158.7 and 185.2 g/BW for C, T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6, respectively. Dry matter intake was high in line with T6(60.3g), C(153.8g), T3(53.6g), T5(47.8g), T2(46.8g), T4(35.2g) and T1(34.48g/BW), (P<0.05). Crude protein intake was high in line with T6(3.9g), T5(3.4g), C(3.4g), T2(2.9g), T3(2.9g), T4(2.6g) and T1(2.3g/BW), (P<0.05). As mentioned above the results, mono-cropping(T3) and inter-cropping(T5 and T6) could be recommended as increasing method of sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid silage utilization when silage intake of dry matter and crude protein were considered.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of remained leaf number on leaf, stem and root growth of leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. Chungchima). Plants were grown hydroponically in $0.45\pm0.15\pm3.0m$ growth channels using a recirculating DFT (Deep Flow Technique) system. The growth response to remained leaf number was evident in leaf and stem than root of leaf lettuce. Leaf fresh weight increased and leaf quality was lowered with increasing of remained leaf number. Results indicate that 4 to 6 leaves could be optimum remained leaf number of hydroponically grown leaf lettuce.

  • Varietal distances were measured by Euclidian $D^2$ statistics in 1, 891 possible comparisons among sixty two varieties of Alisma plantago with seven characters such as leaf width, leaf length, stem length, number of stems per plant, root diameter, and yield of fresh and dry root. A complete linkage cluster analysis based on the Euclidian distance $(D^2)$ was attempted. Sixty two cultivars of Alisma plantago were largely classified into five subgroups. Group 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 included twelve, twenty one, seventeen, five and seven cultivars, respectively. Most of the varietal groups were not associated with their geographical origins. Stem length and root weight among the seven characters were the largest contributors to the $D^2$ in both intra- and inter- groups.

  • This experiment was undertaken in order to clarify effect of NO$_3$-N/NH$_4$-N ratios(NO$_3$/NH$_4$ : 10:0, 8:2) in the nutrient solution on growth, yield, photosynthetic rate, relative concentration of chlorophyll and root activity of hydroponically grown pepper plants at three different root- zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$. Plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, fresh and dry weight of leaf and root were no effect in by three root- zone temperatures. However, leaf number, stem diameter, fresh and dry weight of leaf and stem, dry weight of root at 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ increased when NH$_4$-N was added to the solution. Under root-Bone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, fruit length were longer by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Fruit number and yield increased by the addition of NH$_4$-N at three root-zone temperatures. Photosynthetic rate decreased as root - zone temperature increased. Under root-zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, photosynthetic rate increased significantly by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Chlorophyll content of plants increased at 22$^{\circ}C$. Under root-zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, chlorophyll content of plants increased by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Root activity of increased at 26$^{\circ}C$ Under root-Bone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, root activity increased by the addition of NH$_4$- N.

  • Yacon(Polymina sonchifolia POEPP), an indigenous Andean natural resource food plant, was imported as a new root crop from New Zealand in 1986. However the chemical composition and planting system of it have not been research in Korea. The experimental results for the optimum planting densities and mulching effect are as follows. Height of the main stem of yacon was grown linear from July to October, is showed more fast growth as density increased, and showed highest in 70 ${\times}$ 55cm density. The tiller was bubed 3 month after planting but there was no significant difference among mulching, non-mulching condition and planting density. The fresh weight of root of mulching condition was heavier than that in non-mulching condition and 70 ${\times}$ 40cm mulching condition. In mulching treatment, number of roots in dense planting were more than that in sparse planting. The effect of mulching was not shown significantly in root diameter and root length.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of seeding dates and cultivated period on the growth characteristics, dry matter yield and feed value of Teosinte new variety "Geukdong 6"[Zea mays L. subsp. mexicana (Schrad.) H. H. Iltis]for feed. The experimental design was arranged in a randomized block design with three replications. Treatments consisted of five time seeding dates, 10 May(T1), 25 May(T2), 10 June(T3), 25 June(T4) and 10 July(T5), and same time harvesting, 22 October. Therefore, growing period were 164 days(T1), 149 days(T2), 134 days(T3), 119 days(T4) and 103 days(T5), respectively. In growth stage at harvest time, T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 were early flowering, end heading, middle heading, early heading and early heading stage, respectively. Plant length and dead leaf were highest in T1, but leaf width and number of leaf were highest in T2 than others (p<0.05). Leaf length, stem diameter and number of tiller were not significantly different among the treatments (p<0.05). Stem hardness was higher in order of T1(2.0)> T2(1.9) > T3=T4(1.7) > T5($1.2kg/cm^2$). Fresh yield and dry matter yield showed significantly higher as the sowing time was faster and the cultivation period was longer (T1 > T2 > T3 > T4 > T5, p<0.05). Crude protein, crude fat and TDN content were highest in T5, but ADF and NDF content were highest in T1 than others (p<0.05). T1, T2 and T3 showed significantly higher crude protein yield compared to T4 and T5 (p<0.05). Total digestible nutrients yield were higher in order of T1 > T2 > T3 > T4 > T5 (p<0.05), and relative feed value were higher in order of T5 > T4 > T3 > T2 > T1 (p<0.05). Based on the above results, seeding dates could be recommended from the early May to the late May, and it is efficient that the cultivation period is over 150 days for dry matter yield, crude protein yield and total digestible nutrients yield.

  • Evegradies 71' kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) was grown at 160,000 plants per ha in a volcanic ash soil in Jeju island to determine the optimum frequency of split N application fer forage production. Nitrogen fertilizer was applied with 240 kg/ha, and frequencies of the split N applications were 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 times. Plant height averaged across two harvests increased from 187 to 201cm as N was split-applied from one to three applications and then decreased to 201cm in five applications. This pattern held for the number of branches and leaves per plant stem diameter and weight of plant per plant. Fresh forage yield increased from 91.8 to 114.2 MT/ha. dry matter yield from 12.70 to 16.6 MT/ha, crude protein yield from 1.75 to 2.48MT/ha, and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield from 5.39 to 7.63 MT/ha as N was split-applied from one to four applications, and then decreased to 106.6, 15.0, 2.32, and 7.22 MT/ha in five applications, respectively As N was split-applied from one to five applications, crude protein content increased from 13.8 to 15.4%. ether extract content from 4.1 to 5.9%, and TDN content from 42.4 to 48.1%. but crude fiber decreased from 38.2 to 37.1% and crude ash content from 11.5 to 8.6%. Nitrogen free extract content was about 19.0% regardless of cutting height.

  • This study was conducted to determine the response of main growth characters, yield and chemical composition of Jeju native soybean based on the difference between phosphate rates (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250kg/ha) from May 11 to September 10 in 2002 in Jeju island. Days to flowering was delayed from 92 days to 97 days as the increasing of phosphate rate. Also plant height grew longer from 109cm to 124cm. The number of branches and leaves, stem diameter, root length and weight of root grew powerful as phosphate rate increased from 0 to 250kg/ha. Fresh forage yield was 26.5MT/ha in the nonphosphate plot and then was 36.9MT/ha as phosphate rate increased to 250kg/ha. And the difference between 200kg/ha and 250kg/ha in phosphate rate was not significant. Dry matter, crude protein and TDN yield increased 6.0∼7.9MT/ha, 0.9∼1.4MT/ha and 3.4∼4.9MT/ha respectively, as the increasing of phosphate rate. Also crude protein, crude fat, NFE and TDN content increased 15.5∼18.3%, 2.2∼3.3%, 42.5∼43.5%, and 56.7∼61.9% respectively. In contrast with this, crude fiber and crude ash decreased 32.1∼28.1% and 7.7∼6.8% respectively. To reach the climax of forage yield was estimated optimum phosphate rate to be 200kg/ha.
