The aim of this study was to investigate the dietary habits and the factors related to lifestyles in female college students with constipation. A survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaires. Two hundred ninety one subjects participated in this study. All respondents were divided into three groups based on their frequency of stool evacuation: 129 subjects (44.3%) comprised the normal group, 109 (37.5%) the mild constipated group and 53 (18.2%) the severely constipated group. Abdominal pain and ailment during evacuation were higher and the feeling of relief after evacuation was lower in the normal group than in the two constipated groups. The greater the symptoms of constipation, the more laxatives were taken. The prevalence of constipation was lower in students who lived at home than in those who lived in other types of residences. The more pocket money the subject had, the more complaints they had about constipation symptoms. Forty three percent of the subjects ate meals regularly. The less frequently they ate meals and the greater the rate of skipping breakfasts and dining-out, the greater were their constipation symptoms. Rice and most of the food items in the vegetable food group were consumed less frequently in the two constipated groups than in the normal group. The severely constipated group ate food items in the fat group less frequently than the normal and mildly constipated groups. The beverage intake of the normal group tended to be lower than those of the two constipated groups; the constipated groups consumed fruits and vegetable juices less frequently and coffee and tea more frequently. The severely constipated group ate the least number of food items in the vegetable & fruit and fat food groups. Therefore, dietary habits and factors related to lifestyles should be changed through nutrition education programs aimed at improving the symptoms of constipation in young women.
The use of semiquantitative food frequency questionnaires to estimate dietary intake has become widespread in nutritional epidemiologic studies. It had been suggested that knowledge about a person's usual portion size of each meal in addition to consumption frequency will improve the accuracy of this method. This study was performed to investigate the dietary intake status(nutrient, food, and dish intake) and one portion size of commonly consumed food and dishes to develop a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire that will be used to expore the relationship between the incidence of cardiovascular disease and diet in Korean women after menopause. Intake of food or dish in 123 elderly women were measured by 3-day food records in March to May, 1996. The results obtained in this study were summarized as follow : 1) Calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin E intakes were less adequate than Recommended dietary allowances(RDA). 2) The subjects who consumed more than 20% of the energy from fat were 35% and the subjects consumed dietary cholesterol more than 300mg were 18$\%$. 3) The most frequently consumed foods or dishes by the subjects were Korean cabbage kimchi〉cooked rice, well-milled〉laver〉apple〉strawberry〉mixed rice〉soybean soup. 4) The major dish groups which contributed to most daily nutrient intakes were cooked rice, Korean cabbage kimchi, soybean soup because of large amount and high frequency of intake although they do not contain large amount of most nutrients. 5) One portion size of commomly consumed foods and dishes in elderly women was different from one portion size suggested in the Korean nutrition society. This study provides information for the design of data-based semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. for Korean elderly women. This study was conducted to compare food intakes between newly diagnosed diabetics and non-diabetics by food frequency questionnarie in adults in rural area. Food frequency questionnaire containing 65 food items was executed to 2,406 subjects over 30 years of age living inYeonchon-gun, Kyungki province. Frequency of consumption of each food items were divided into 9 categories ranging from 'over 3 tiemes a day' to 'never'. Fasting blood glucose levels were measured and 2-hour glucose tolerance test was administered for each subject. Newly diagnosed diabetics were identified as those with fasting blood glucose level ≥ 140mg/dl or 2-hour postprandial glucose level ≥200mg/dl and without previous diagnosis of diabetes. Intake frequencies of food items were compared between newly diagnosed diabetics and nondiabetics. For each food item examined, odds ratios for developing diabetes were calculated for people consuming more frequently, after adjusting for age, BMI and sex. Food intake frequencies were compared according to the occurrence of diabetes. Twenty four items were more frequently consumed by nonidabetics and 12 items were more frequently consumed by newly diagnosed diabetics. Odds ratios for diabetes were significantly lower for breads, biscuit, beef loin, beef tender loin, pork belly, fish paste, coffee, cola/cider, candy, beer, chongak kimchi, carrot, mushrooms and other white vegetables, banana, melon and juice. On the other hand, odds ratios for diabetes were higher for zucchini and garlic. Although this was a cross over prevalence study, the results indicate that consumption frequencies of several food items were related with the occurrence of diabetes in the study subjects.
Using ICP-AES, we analyzed manganese content in 366 foods consumed frequently by Koreans. For the analysis, it was included a total of 366 foods such as 51 kinds of grains, 7 kinds of potatoes and starches, 7 kinds of sugars and sweeteners, 12 kinds of legumes, 11 kinds of nuts and seeds, 68 kinds of vegetables, 7 kinds of mushrooms, 33 kinds of fruits, 13 kinds of meats, 4 kinds of eggs, 48 kinds of fishes and shellfishes, 7 kinds of seaweeds, 16 kinds of milks, 8 kinds of oils and fats, 27 kinds of beverages, 34 kinds of seasonings, 13 kinds of processed foods and others. Among the grains, starches and sugars, manganese content of rice was 0.745 mg/100g. As for legumes, the content of manganese in soybean milk was 0.033 mg/100g and in black beans was 4.075 mg/100g. In nuts and seeds, the content of manganese in gingko nuts was 0.268 mg/100g while that in pine nuts was 8.872 mg/100g. Among the vegetables, manganese contents were 0.061 mg/100g in cherry tomato and 14.017 mg/100g in ginger. In mushrooms, the highest manganese content was displayed in ear mushroom at 10.382 mg/100g. Dried jujube and shrimp were found to be the fruits and fishes with high manganese contents at 2.985 mg/100g and 3.512 mg/100g, respectively. Among dairy foods, oils and beverages, manganese content was the highest in instant coffee powder at 2.577 mg/100g. Seasonings and processed foods posted 0.010 mg/100g in Sagolgomtang, instant soup and 23.846 mg/100g in pepper. In a furture, more various food for manganese content needs to be analyzed and a reliable food database should be compiled from the findings of researches in order to estimate manganese consumption accurately.

To assess the food intake and diet quality of preschool children in Pusan, dietary survey was conducted with 176 subjects using 24hr recall method. Diet quality was assessed by food group pattern, dietary diversity score(DDS), dietary variety score(DVS), and dietary frequency score(DFS). The total number of food items consumed was 307. The foods consumed most frequently were rice, Korean cabbage kimchi, milk and green onion. When investigating the consumption pattern of major six food groups, 38.1% of subjects consumed all six groups. Food group was missed in order of fruit(41.5%), sweet(19.9%), dairy(16.5), vegetable(4.5%) and meat(1.7%). The mean values of DDS, DVS, and DFS were 5.16, 13.82, and 16.07 re spectively. Persons who had higher DDSs also had higher DVSs(p<0.001). DDS, DVS and DFS correlated positively with NAR(nutrient adequacy ratio) and MAR(mean adequacy ratio) significantly. Associations between the NAR of most nutrients and MAR with DVS and DFS were higher than those between the NAR of most nutrients and MAR with DDS. People with DDS of above 6 or DVS of above 16 or DFS of above 21 met two thirds of recommended dietary allowance for nutrients. Based on the result of the food group intake, the food intake of subjects was not adequate, especially the fruit and dairy groups. When assessing the dietary quality of subjects using DDS, DVS and DFS, many people appeared not to have a desirable food intake.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diversity of food intake among Korean college students of a nutrition education course through the internet. Subjects were 796 nation-wide college students (male 278, female 518). A dietary survey collected from 3 day-recalls were analyzed by the Computer Aided Nutritional Analysis Program. Diet variety was assessed by DDS (dietary diversity score), MBS (meal balance score), and DVS (dietary variety score). The foods consumed in largest amounts were rice (54.42 g), citrus fruit (36.41 g) and milk (30.91 g). The foods consumed most frequently were rice (65.28%), garlic (63.65%) and salt (63.64%). The average food intake was 1325.3 g (male 1420.6 g, female 1274.1 g), with vegetable and animal food comprising 78.5% and 21.5% of total food intake, respectively. The consumption of the major five food groups comprised DDS, and 66.0% (male 56.1%, female 71.3%) of subjects had a DDS of 5 and 27.4% (male 33.5%, female 24.1%) of subjects had a DDS of 4..Groups most frequently missed were dairy products (56.5%) and fruits (41.6%). The average of MBS were 10.88 (11.61 in Seoul, 11.03 in Kyungsang, 10.88 in Chungcheong, 10.85 in Incheon, 10.57 in Kyunggi) in male and 11.08 (11.47 in Kyungsang, 11.20 in Seoul, 11.18 in Kyunggi, 10.82 in Chungcheong, 10.64 in Incheon) in female. Male students in Seoul (18.2) and female students in Kyungsang (18.6) had the greater number of consumed food items. Subjects who had higher DDS had significantly higher DVS (p < 0.001). Based on these results, the food intake of the subjects regarded as not adequate, especially with regards to the dairy and fruit groups. Considering their nutritional characteristics, dietary guidelines as well as education should be made to improve the food intake and include various foods in their diet.
This study was conducted to find the differences in food consumption frequency of the middle aged(male 20, female 50) and the elderly(male 15, female 15) living in Chonju in December, 1998 according to food habits, smoking, alcohol drinking and exercising habit, health status, and the levels of nutrition knowledge and attitude store. The foods frequently consumed among the subjects were kimchi(15.4/week), mixed rice(11.5/week), rice(7.6/week), vegetables in soup, jjigae and jorim(5.0/week), mandarins and oranges(5.e/week), and seasoned laver(4.3/week). There were several factors influencing food consumption patterns. These were age, regularity of meal times, the status of smoking, alcohol drinking and exercising, and the level of nutrition attitude. The elderly ate cooked rice more frequently, while the middle aged ate fish, especially blue fishes more frequently. The middle aged who had breakfast regularly ate milk and milk products, legumes and fruits frequently. Those who smoked seemed to eat less cereals and starches and fats, while those who didn't smoke ate more sugars. The alcohol drinking group also ate less fats and the exorcising group ate almost all of food groups frequently. The status of health showed to be related with food consumption patterns. The normal group in hemoglobin ate eggs more frequently than the anemia group and the high risk group in blood pressure ate almost all of food groups more frequently. The high level group for nutrition attitude score chose vegetables, fruits, and milk and milk products more frequently than the other groups. On the other hand, low level group for nutrition attitude score was apt to eat ramyun, ham-sausage, and carbonated beverages more frequently. Therefore, nutrition education to improve the food habits find to change nutrition attitude is necessary to promote health status anti mole attention should be taken to the high risk group in blood pressure to guide proper food and nutrition intakes.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the intake status of energy drinks, knowledge of caffeine and the perception on intake of energy drinks by university students. We surveyed 351 university students from October 25, 2017 to January 25, 2018. The subjects (70.9%) consumed energy drinks more than once. Male students consumed energy drinks more frequently than the female ones. A huge portion (68.3%) of the subjects consumed energy drinks to recover from fatigue and reduce sleepiness. Moreover, they consumed most of the energy drinks at home and the university library. The main anticipated efficacy of energy drinks was the relieving drowsiness. Respondents (86.3%) perceived that energy drinks could be hazardous to the health of human beings. The main risks of consuming energy drinks were sleep disorders, addiction problems and heart beating. The main recognized effects of energy drinks were relieved drowsiness and decreased fatigue. The major side effects were heart beating, nausea, vomiting, heartburn and sleeping disorders. This study suggests that nutritional education is needed to confirm the recommendation of daily intake for caffeine and to raise awareness about the side effects of energy drinks.
This research was designed to see the relationship among nutrient intake, food intake frequency and psychosocial stress in ordinary life. The subjects were 190 males and 263 females of university students in urban areas. There were significant correlations between nutrient intake and stress value, and between food intake frequency and stress value. In male, the more they consumed energy, protein and carbohydrate, the higher they had stress in several categories. But in female the results were reversed. Their stress values were lower when they have consumed protein source food frequently. And in general, stress values of female were higher than those of male. From these results, we conclude that nutrient intake tends to be decresed with increase stress in less stressful condition, but to be increased in more stressful condition.
