In this paper, a low power, small area cyclic time-to-digital converter in All-Digital PLL for DVB-S2 application is presented. Coarse and fine TDC stages in the two-step TDC are shared to reduce the area and the current consumption maintaining the resolution since the area of the TDC is dominant in the ADPLL. It is implemented in a 0.13 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process with a die area of 0.12 $mm^2$. The power consumption is 2.4 mW at a 1.2 V supply voltage. Furthermore, the resolution and input frequency of the TDC are 5 ps and 25 MHz, respectively.

In this study, single-phase and three-level boost converters applied to the photovoltaic system were compared and analyzed in terms of efficiency and power density according to the input voltage and load conditions. For accurate analysis of efficiency, the losses in each device of the single-phase and three-level boost converters were derived using mathematical equations and simulations by using the PSIM thermal module. Then, the losses were compared with the efficiency confirmed through the actual experiments. Results confirmed that the efficiency and power density can be improved by applying the three-level boost converter to the system according to the selection of the switching frequency.

This paper focuses on the zero-voltage/zero current transition voltage equalization circuit for the series connected battery cell. By adding auxiliary resonant cells at the main switching devices such as MOSFET or IGBT, zero current switching is achieved and turned off loss of switching elements is eliminated and by the voltage/second balancing of the inductor, zero voltage switching can be applied to switching element. Transformer coupling between battery cells and ZVZCT (Zero Voltage Zero Current Transition) switching method allow the fast balancing speed and high frequency operation, which reduces the size and weight of the circuit. The validity of the battery equalization is further verified using simulation involving four lithium-ion battery cell models.
This paper proposes a novel scheme for the current controller for the grid-side converter (GSC) of permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind turbines to eliminate the high-order harmonics in the grid currents under grid voltage disturbances. The voltage unbalance and harmonics in three-phase systems cause grid current distortions. In order to mitigate the input current distortions, multi-loop current controllers are applied, where the positive-sequence component is regulated by proportional-integral (PI) controllers, and the negative-sequence and high-order harmonic components are regulated by proportional-resonance (PR) controllers. For extracting the positive/negative-sequence and harmonic components of the grid voltages and currents without a phase delay or magnitude reduction, composite observers are applied, which give faster and more precise estimation results. In addition, an active damping method using PR controllers to damp the grid current component of the resonant frequency is employed to improve the operating stability of VSCs with inductor-capacitor-inductor (LCL) filters. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experimental results.
Fuel cell (FC) is a promising power supply in electric vehicles (EV); however, it has poor dynamic performance and short service life. To address these shortcomings, a super capacitor (SC) is adopted as an auxiliary power supply. In this study, the frequency decoupling control method is used in electric vehicle energy system. High-frequency and low-frequency demand power is provided by SC and FC, respectively, which makes full use of two power supplies. Simultaneously, the energy system still has rapidity and reliability. The distributed power system (DPS) of EV requires DC-DC converters to achieve the desired voltage. The stability of cascaded converters must be assessed. Impedance-based methods are effective in the stability analysis of DPS. In this study, closed-loop impedances of interleaved half-bridge DC-DC converter and phase-shifted full-bridge DC-DC converter based on the frequency decoupling control method are derived. The closed-loop impedance of an inverter for permanent magnet synchronous motor based on space vector modulation control method is also derived. An improved Middlebrook criterion is used to assess and adjust the stability of the energy system. A theoretical analysis and simulation test are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the energy management system and the control method.

This paper proposed optimal design and microcontroller driver for driving the thin-type ultrasonic motor. To find the optimal size of the stator, motions of the motor were simulated using ATILA by changing length, width and thickness of the ceramics. Two sinusoidal waves which have 90 degree phase difference were needed for driving the thin-type motor. The thin-type ultrasonic motor driver was composed of microcontroller(Atmega128), push-pull inverter, encoder and AD-converter. Microcontroller generates four square waves which have variable frequency and 25[%] duty ratio in $20{\sim}150$[kHz]. The output signals of microcontroller were converted to sine wave and cosine wave by push-pull inverter and were applied to the thin-type ultrasonic motor. The encoder and AD-converter were used for maintaining speed of the thin-type ultrasonic motor. The AD-converter controlled DC voltage of inverter in accordance with output signal of encoder. Using the driver, characteristics of the motor as speed and torque were measured.

This paper deals with a switching method to minimize the current ripple component of 3-phase interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter for charging and discharging of the battery. The characteristics of the output current ripple in 3-phase and 2-phase operation modes according to the variation of battery voltage is analyzed and a phase conversion method for minimizing the magnitude of the current ripple is proposed. The proposed method can extend the light load range because the switching frequency is lower than that of a 3-phase operating system. Simulation and experimental results show the usefulness of the proposed method.

Cathodic protection is widely used to prevent corrosion of steel materials buried in the underground and sea. As a rectifier for cathodic protection, the conventional phase-controlled rectifiers have been used so far in spite of such shortcomings as large volume, heavy weight and floor power factor. In order to overcome such disadvantages, this paper proposes a new module-type switching rectifier for cathodic protection, which is composed of two parts, namely, AC/DC converter and module- type DC/DC converter. The AC/DC converter is a single-phase IGBT PWM rectifier, thus resulting in almost unity power factor and controlled DC output voltage. The module-type DC/DC converter operates under ZVS/ZCS switching condition to permit high frequency switching operation. It enables to use high-frequency transformer for electrical isolation, thus reducing volume and weight of overall system and improving system efficiency. It should be anticipated that the proposed rectifier techniques apply to the similar technical areas.
This paper presents a new kind of digital control metal halide lamp electronic ballast. A zero-voltage-switch quasi-square-wave (ZVS-QSW) dual Buck converter is adopted here. In this paper, a digital control method is proposed to achieve ZVS for the converter. This ZVS can be realized during the whole working condition. Single-cycle-peak-current control is proposed to solve the problem of excessive inductor current during a low-frequency reversal transient. Power loop control is also realized and its consistency for different lamps is good. An AVR special microcontroller for a HID ballast is used to raise the control performance, and the low-frequency square-wave control method is adopted to avoid acoustic resonance. A 70W prototype was built in the laboratory. Experimental results show that the electronic ballast works reliably. Furthermore, the efficiency of the ballast can be higher than 92%.
In this paper, a robust and fast grid synchronization method of a three-phase power converter is proposed. The amplitude and phase information of grid voltages are essential for power converters to be properly connected into the utility. The phase-lock-loop in synchronous reference frame has been widely adopted for the three-phase converter system since it shows a satisfactory performance under balanced grid voltages. However, power converters often operate under abnormal grid conditions, i.e. unbalanced by grid faults and frequency variations, and thus a proper active and reactive power control cannot be guaranteed. The proposed method adopts a second order generalized integrator in synchronous reference frame to detect positive sequence components under unbalanced grid voltages. The proposed method has a fast and robust performance due to its higher gain and frequency adaptive capability. Simulation and experimental results show the verification of the proposed synchronization algorithm and the effectiveness to detect positive sequence voltage.
