Since the successful launch of FORMOSAT -2 satellite by National Space Organization of Taiwan in May 2004, the Remote Sensing Instrument (RSI) on- board the FORMOSAT -2 has continuously acquired images at one panchromatic and four multi-spectral bands (http://www.nspo.org.tw). In general, the RSI performs well and receives high quality images which proved to be very useful for various applications. However, some RSI panchromatic products exhibit obvious trembling artifact that must be removed. Preliminary study reveals that the trembling artifact is caused by the instability of the spacecraft attitude. Though the magnitude of this artifact is actually less than half of a pixel, it affects the applicability of panchromatic products. A procedure removing this artifact is therefore needed for providing image products of consistent quality. Due to the nature of trembling artifact, it is impossible to describe the trembling amount by employing an analytic model. Relied only on image itself, an algorithm determining trembling amount and removing accordingly the trembling artifact is proposed. The algorithm consists of 3 stages. First, a cross-correlation based scheme is used to measure the relative shift between adjacent scan lines. Follows, the trembling amount is estimated from the measured value. For this purpose, the Fourier transform is utilized to characterize random shifts in frequency domain. An adaptive estimation method is then applied to deduce the approximate trembling amount. In the subsequent stage, image re-sampling operation is applied to restore the trembling-free product. Experimental results show that by applying the proposed algorithm, the unpleasant trembling artifact is no longer evident.

Scanning white-light interferometry is an important measurement option for many surfaces. However, serious profile measurement errors can be present when measuring free-form surfaces being highly curved or tilted. When the object surface slope is not zero, the object and reference rays are no longer common path and optical aberrations impact the measurement. Aberrations mainly occur at the beam splitter in the interference objective and from misalignment in the optical system. Both effects distort the white-light interference signal when the surface slope is not zero. In this paper, we describe a modified version of white-light interferometry for eliminating these measurement errors and improving the accuracy of white-light interferometry. Moreover, we report systematic errors that are caused by optical aberrations when the object is not flat, and compare our proposed method with the conventional processing algorithm using the random ball test.
We investigate the sunspot area data spanning from solar cycles 1 (March 1755) to 23 (December 2010) in time domain. For this purpose, we employ the Hilbert transform analysis method, which is used in the field of information theory. One of the most important advantages of this method is that it enables the simultaneous study of associations between the amplitude and the phase in various timescales. In this pilot study, we adopt the alternating sunspot area as a function of time, known as Bracewell transformation. We first calculate the instantaneous amplitude and the instantaneous phase. As a result, we confirm a ~22-year periodic behavior in the instantaneous amplitude. We also find that a behavior of the instantaneous amplitude with longer periodicities than the ~22-year periodicity can also be seen, though it is not as straightforward as the obvious ~22-year periodic behavior revealed by the method currently proposed. In addition to these, we note that the phase difference apparently correlates with the instantaneous amplitude. On the other hand, however, we cannot see any obvious association of the instantaneous frequency and the instantaneous amplitude. We conclude by briefly discussing the current status of development of an algorithm for the solar activity forecast based on the method presented, as this work is a part of that larger project.

The fin of high speed air vehicle is composed of skins and strong skeletons. In the flutter analysis, the eigenmodes of a fin are used for evaluating the unsteady aerodynamic force and the modal approach is applied for solving the flutter equation in both time and frequency domain. Therefore, the proper eigenmodes used for a modal flutter analysis should be chosen. For the appropriate choice of eigenmodes, when there exist local modes of a skin in the high modes, the effects of those modes on the unsteady aerodynamic force and flutter characteristics are anlalyzed.

In this paper, we present an discrimination method of unknown digital modulated signals in noisy communication environment. We propose the use of an identification procedure based on time domain signal parameters. First, We extract instantaneous envelope. Frequency and difference phase as the basic feature informations from received signals. In order to identify signals using the extracted feature informations, we design the two dimensional feature space. The extracted feature infomations are mapped into2Dfeature space using 2D feature points. The procedure has been tested by simulations on a computer in noisy communication environment, and the considered signals are ASK-W, ASK-4, BPSK, QPSK, 8PSK, FSK, and QAM.

Control system modeling and optimal bending filter design for KSR-III (Korea Sounding Rocket III) are performed. Rigid rocket dynamics, aerodynamics, sloshing, structural bending, actuator dynamics, sensor dynamics and on-board computer characteristics are considered for control system modeling. Compensation for time-varying control system parameters is conducted by gain-scheduling. A filter to stabilize bending mode is designed using parameter optimization technique. Resultant attitude control system can satisfy required frequency domain stability margin.

In this paper, a reconfigurable model following flight control method is proposed based on direct adaptive scheme using parameter estimation. Adaptive control scheme updates the control gains to make the system output follow the reference output even when fault occurs. By adopting the frequency domain parameter estimation method, system changes by the fault can be estimated. Recursive Fourier transformation is used for system identification. Using recursive Fourier transform, the proposed adaptive control algorithm guarantees the system stability and improves the system characteristics. To evaluate the performance of proposed control method, numerical simulations are performed.
This paper presents a stability analysis of AC-DC power system feeding a speed controlled DC motor in which this load behaves as a constant power load (CPL). A CPL can significantly degrade power system stability margin. Hence, the stability analysis is very important. The DQ and generalized state-space averaging methods are used to derive the mathematical model suitable for stability issues. The paper analyzes the stability of power systems for both speed control natural frequency and DC-link parameter variations and takes into account controlled speed motor dynamics. However, accurate DC-link filter and DC motor parameters are very important for the stability study of practical systems. According to the measurement errors and a large variation in a DC-link capacitor value, the system identification is needed to provide the accurate parameters. Therefore, the paper also presents the identification of system parameters using the adaptive Tabu search technique. The stability margins can be then predicted via the eigenvalue theorem with the resulting dynamic model. The intensive time-domain simulations and experimental results are used to support the theoretical results.

Due to GPS signal's vulnerability of jamming attack, various enhancement techniques are needed. Among variety of techniques, we focused on GPS receiver's anti-jamming techniques. There are many anti-jamming methods at GPS receivers which include filtering methods in time domain, frequency domain and space domain. However, these methods are ineffective to signals, which include both jamming and noise. To solve the problem, this paper proposes a jamming separation scheme by using a BSS method in a jamming environment. As separated GPS signals include noise after the jamming separation method, it is difficult to receive accurate GPS signals. For this reason, this paper also proposes a wavelet de-noising method to effectively eliminate noise. Experimental results of this paper are based on a real field test data of an integrated GPS/QZSS/Wi-Fi positioning system. At the end, the simulation result demonstrates its superiority by showing improved positioning accuracy.

Acoustic holography exhibits the spatial distribution of sound pressure in time or frequency domain. The obtained picture often contains far more than what we need in practice. For example. when we need to know only the locations and overall propagation pattern of sound sources. a method to show only what we need has to be introduced. One way of obtaining the necessary information is to use envelope in space. The spatial envelope is a spatially slowly-varying amplitude of acoustic waves which contains the information of sources' location. A spatial modulation method has been theoretically developed to get a spatial envelope. By applying the spatial envelope. not only the necessary information is obtained but also computation time is reduced during the process of holography. The spatial envelope is verified as an effective visualization scheme in time domain by being applied to complicated sound fields.
