  • Dynamic analysis using impulse responses is formulated to estimate effect of slider rail shape on dynamic responses. Impulse responses are obtained on numerical nonlinear model including rigid motion of slider and fluid motion of air bearing under the slider. Dynamic characteristics of slider motion are evaluated by utilizing the decay ratio of impulse responses and modal frequencies from frequency response functions. The dynamic characteristics of the developed NFR(Near Field Recording) slider are checked by comparing those of HDD sider(Nutcracker). Also, sensitivities of slider position conditions and rotation speed on the dynamic characteristics are investigated. The researches show that the utilized method is a good indicator of designing the better slider.

  • Frequency responses of ambulatory electrocardiogram systems were measured. Phase shift was assessed by our improved Wagner's method. The characteristics of the systems were found much worse than that of ordinary ECG equipment both in gain and phase responses. The decay of -3dB in amplitude observed in 0.2Hz and the lead of 45 dog in phase was observed in 0.6Hz. In order to investigate which of these 2 responses play major role in generating false S -T deviation, mathe- matical filters were Composed in a computer and actual ECGs were fed. The false S-T deviation were found to be caused mostly by enormous lead in phase, and then, the compensation circuit to diminish the lead in phase was inserted in the commercial systemes. The compensated systems showed no false deviation in S-T segment.

  • According to natural frequency of soil, characteristics of earthquake responses of an isolated containment building in nuclear power plants are examined. For this, earthquake response analysis of seismically isolated containment buildings in nuclear power plants is carried out by strictly considering soil-structure interactions. The structure and near-field soil are modeled by the finite element method while far-field soil by consistent transmitting boundary. The equation of motion of a soil-structure interaction system under incident seismic wave is derived. The derived equations of motion are solved to carry out earthquake analysis of a seismically isolated soil-structure system. Generally, the results of this analysis show that seismic isolation significantly reduces the responses of the soil-structure system. However, if the natural frequency of the soil is similar to that of the soil-structure system, the responses of the containment buildings in nuclear power plants rather increases due to interactions in the system.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the appearance orientation and clothing and cosmetics purchasing behaviors according to media contact responses. The subjects were 445 female university students in Daejeon and Chungnam province. The measuring instruments was a questionnaire with media contact responses, appearance orientation, clothing and cosmetics purchasing behavior, and subjects' demographic characteristics. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, frequency analysis, ${\chi}^2$ test, ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, and regression analysis using SPSS program. The results were as follows. First, female university students had very positive response and attitude on entertainers' appearance, style and products showed by media. Second, media contact response had a significant effect on appearance orientation. The group with a high level of media contact response showed higher appearance orientation than the groups with mediate and low level of media contact response. Third, media contact response had meaningful effects on clothing and cosmetics purchasing behaviors. The group with a high level of media contact response showed higher shopping frequency, purchasing frequency, and more spending on clothing and cosmetics than other groups.

  • Acoustic behavior in gas turbine combustor with acoustic resonator is investigated numerically by adopting linear acoustic analysis. Helmholtz-type resonator is employed as acoustic resonator to suppress acoustic instability passively. The tuning frequency of acoustic resonator is adjusted by varying its length. Through harmonic analysis, acoustic-pressure responses of chamber to acoustic excitation are obtained and the resonant acoustic modes are identified. Acoustic damping effect of acoustic resonator is quantified by damping factor. As the tuning frequency of acoustic resonator approaches the target frequency of the resonant mode to be suppressed, mode split from the original resonant mode to lower and upper modes appears and thereby complex patterns of acoustic responses show up. Considering mode split and damping effect as a function of tuning frequency, it is desirable to make acoustic resonator tuned to broad-band frequencies near the maximum frequency of those of the possible upper modes.

  • This paper presents the application of the substrctural analysis based on the frequency responses for the prediction of the interior noise in a car. The complex trimmed body with the high modal density is presented by the experimental data. Finite element model presents the powertrain and its subframes with the lower modal density. The substructural analysis based on the frequency responses combines the frequency response functions from the numerical analysis and the experiments. It describes the interior noise successwfully. Using this method we can pick up the most dominant paths for the booming noise and predict the effects of the design changes easily.

  • Optimal damping layout of the constrained viscoelastic damping layer on beam is identified with temperatures by using a gradient-based numerical search algorithm. An optimal design problem is defined in order to determine the constrained damping layer configuration. A finite element formulation is introduced to model the constrained damping layer beam. The four-parameter fractional derivative model and the Arrhenius shift factor are used to describe dynamic characteristics of viscoelastic material with respect to frequency and temperature. Frequency-dependent complex-valued eigenvalue problems are solved by using a simple resubstitution algorithm in order to obtain the loss factor of each mode and responses of the structure. The results of the numerical example show that the proposed method can reduce frequency responses of beam at peaks only by reconfiguring the layout of constrained damping layer within a limited weight constraint.

  • For successful visual perception by visual prosthesis using electrical stimulation, it is essential to develop an effective stimulation strategy based on understanding of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) responses to electrical stimulation. We studied RGC responses to repetitive electrical stimulation pulses to develop a stimulation strategy using stimulation pulse frequency modulation. Retinal patches of photoreceptor-degenerated retinas from rd1 mice were attached to a planar multi-electrode array (MEA) and RGC spike trains responding to electrical stimulation pulse trains with various pulse frequencies were observed. RGC responses were strongly dependent on inter-pulse interval when it was varied from 500 to 10 ms. Although the evoked spikes were suppressed with increasing pulse rate, the number of evoked spikes were >60% of the maximal responses when the inter-pulse intervals exceeded 100 ms. Based on this, we investigated the modulation of evoked RGC firing rates while increasing the pulse frequency from 1 to 10 pulses per second (or Hz) to deduce the optimal pulse frequency range for modulation of RGC response strength. RGC response strength monotonically and linearly increased within the stimulation frequency of 1~9 Hz. The results suggest that the evoked neural activities of RGCs in degenerated retina can be reliably controlled by pulse frequency modulation, and may be used as a stimulation strategy for visual neural prosthesis.
