Nocturnal temperature distribution on orange orchards in Cheju Island (II) (제주도 감귤 과수원의 야간 기온 분포(II))

  • The Characteristics of nocturnal temperature fields were analyzed to understand the factors of freezing-and-cold damages on orange orchards in Cheju Island. Temperatures were measured from January 7th through 27, 1995 at 25 sites in an area of 1x1.25$ extrm{km}^2$, Wasan-ri, Chochon-up, Pukcheju-kun located on the northeastern slope of Mt.Hanla. Several other weather elements such as wind and cloud were observed as supplementary data. Surface weather maps were also analyzed to clarify the influence of prevailing pressure patterns on the temperature fields. The vertical temperature profiles were obtained at the height from the ground up to 360 cm in 30 cm intervals at site 3, a frost hollow, and site 10 on the upper slope. The results show that freezing damages occured in the hollows, terrain depressions, rather than at the upper slope due to nocturnal radiation cooling as well as accumulation of cold airflow from Mt.Hanla. Windbreaks of densely planted Japanese ceders with stone-walls also roled as obstacles to the cold airflow in nights with Clear skies and light winds. The maximum intensity of temperature inversion in hollows, quasi-cold air lake, was 3.1$^{\circ}C$. Cold air from Mt.Hanla was trapped in the depressions up to a height of 90cm forming frost pocket. Man-made facilities such as shelterbelt or stone-wall which are built to prevent the penetration of cold north-westeries in winter aggravated the cold damage. The differance of daily minimum temperatures between before and behind shelterbelts was 2.$0^{\circ}C$. The man-made convection by smudgin which raised the temperatures up to 3.8$^{\circ}C$ can reduce the cold damage in the hellows.

  • When fresh concrete is exposed to low temperature, the concrete may suffer frost damage due to freezing at early ages and strength development may be delayed. One of the solution methods for resolve these problems is to reduce freezing temperature of concrete by the use of chemical admixture called Accelerators for freezing resistance. In this study, we investigate the effect on strength development of cement mortar using accelerators for freezing resistance with the variance curing condition. As the result of this study, the mortar using accelerators for freezing resistance show that continuously strength development in curing condition of -5$^{\circ}C$. And compressive strength under the variance temperature condition was higher than constant temperature condition in same maturity.

Application of Chlorophyll a Fluorescence Imaging Analysis for Selection of Rapid Frozen Sweet Persimmon Fruits (단감(Diospyros kaki)의 동상해 평가를 위한 엽록소 형광 이미지 분석법의 활용)

  • BACKGROUND: In korea, sweet persimmon(Diospyros kaki) cultivation is front to abiotic stresses such as frost damage at fruit maturing stage. The cold and rapid freezing stresses are most damaging to fruit production which is most actively progressed in late fall. This study was performed to evaluate the validity of chlorophyll fluorescence imaging(CFI) technology to determine the degree of frost damage in sweet persimmon fruits. METHODS AND RESULTS: The sweet persimmon fruits were measured separately for each treatment(15, 30, 60 minutes) at 24 hours after treatment(HAT) rapid freezing. A CFI FluorCam (FC 1000-H, PSI, Czech Republic) was used to measure the fluorescence images of the fruits. In rapid freezing for 15 minutes, photochemical parameters were not changed. However, in rapid freezing for 30 and 60 minutes, photochemical parameters were lowered. Especially, $F_m$, $F_v$, $F_v/F_m$ and ${\Phi}PSII$ values were declined under rapid freezing. CONCLUSION: In our study, it was clearly indicated that the rapid freezing could be a stress in sweet persimmon fruits. The CFI analysis and its related parameters are applicable as a rapid assessing technique for the determination of frost damage.

Classification of cold regions and analysis of the freeze-thaw repetition cycle based on heat transfer quantity by freezing test (실내동결시험을 통한 열류량 분석에 따른 동결-융해 조건 분석 및 한랭지역의 분류)

  • Tunnels constructed in cold regions can cause serious defects such as cracks and leaks due to external temperature changes in the portals and vents. In order to prevent the freezing damage of the tunnel, appropriate measures should be applied to the section where the freeze damage is concerned. However, the specific criteria and contents for judging whether or not the anti-freeze measures are applied are not presented. In this study, the laboratory freezing tests on the temperature changes of the concrete specimens under freezing conditions were carried out. And the freeze-thaw repetition cycle (F), which can judge the possibility of freezing damage, were presented based on the heat transfer quantity (W) by experimental results of case studies. Also, we propose a classification of cold regions considering the climatic characteristics of Korea for using it to efficient design and maintenance.

  • Abnormal climate events are occurring frequently around the world. In particular, cold waves and heavy snow lead to damage and deterioration of facilities, which can cause loss of life or property damage, such as shortening the lifespan of facilities. Therefore, it is very important to prepare an appropriate maintenance system and to establish a strategy to cope with abnormal weather conditions. In this study, laboratory freezing experiments were performed to analyze the freeze-thaw characteristics affecting the tunnel concrete lining, and heat flow analysis was carried out based on the test results. Based on these experimental and theoretical analysis results, quantitative freeze-thaw evaluation criteria for tunnel concrete linings were proposed.

  • In the latest, the construction period became the most important factor in the domestic building works because buildings is higher and larger gradually. Accordingly, cold-weathering concrete constructions are performed more and more. So, the demands of concrete quality management methods are increased in cold-weathering concrete constructions. In this study, the mock-up experiment was performed to correct input data in the kimpo H construction field. Using the results of this experiment, the method of temperature analysis was presented to prevent early aged freezing damage and to control thermal crack in this study.

Freezing Resistance of Apple (사과나무의 내한성(耐寒性))

  • Freezing resistance of apple (Malus pumila) cultivars was measured to find out the most cold hardy apple variety among the five cultivars which are promissing in Korea. The measurement of freezing resistance for two varieties of dwarf interstock, was also included to compare the cold hardiness among scions and interstocks. The freezing resistance was in order from lowest to highest; winter bud, cambium, xylem ray parenchyma and bark cortex in all cultivars except EM26. The difference in cold hardiness among cultivars and interstocks was not consistent among tissue parts of twig except in cultivar Nugget-spur of which all tissue parts showed least cold hardiness. The difference among tissue parts with in a cultivar was discussed in terms of choosing the most cold hardy, and the most resistant cultivars to late frost damage.

  • In this study, the temperature history was evaluated for the improved bubble sheets combining hot wires and PE films, which were developed under the extreme environmental condition of -10℃ and applied on the top surface of slab to prevent initial damage by freezing. Results can be summarized as follows. If improved bubble sheets combining hot wires with different capacity on double and quadruple bubble sheets are used, the temperature history for all materials decreased to 2~3℃ below zero but all test materials except Type 1 secured the accumulative temperature of 45° D·D at 7 days of material age, required for the prevention of initial freezing damage. This indicates the bubble sheets can prevent the initial damage by freezing.

Regional Distribution of Peach Freezing Damage and Chilling Days in 2010 in Gangwon Province (강원지역의 2010년 복숭아 동해)

  • Extremely low values of the daily minimum temperature occurred in January 2010, ranging from -18 to $-29^{\circ}C$ at various locations growing peach trees in the Gangwon province. Due to the extreme cold temperature during the winter dormancy period of peach trees, the growth of the peach trees was damaged and the damaged areas increased as the extent of 17 to 144 ha. In order to provide information on mitigation measure of the cold temperature on the peach trees in the Gangwon province, we assessed the distribution of the damaged areas of growing the peach trees in 2010 and compared it with freezing risk estimated from the dormancy depth of the peach trees and the daily minimum temperature. The dormancy depth of 'Changhowon Hwando (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch)' ranged from -62 to -90 and the freezing risk was greater than 51%. The relationship between the freezing risk and the actual damaged area ratio showed reasonable agreement ($r^2$ of 0.5 with p < 0.01). The results imply that the estimates of the freezing risk based on the dormancy depth can be used as a mitigation measure to identify susceptible peach growing areas to freezing damage injury.

Difference in Freezing Resistance between Common and Sweet Persimmon (떫은감과 단감의 내한성(耐寒性) 차이(差異))

  • This study examined the cold hardiness of eight cultivars of common persimmon and six cultivars of sweet persimmon growing at the southern part of Korea, to know the most susceptible tissue part, timing of damage, and the difference in freezing resistance between the cultivars during the winter of '77-'78. The cold hardiness of winter bud, cambium and xylem parenchyma of the current year twig was measured on three collection dates; 10 / 26 / 77, 1 / 26 / 78 and 3 / 26 / 78. The results were obtained as follows, 1. The least cold hardy tissue part was winter bud during mid winter and early spring. 2. On the basis of the cold hardiness of the winter bud sweet persimmon cultivars appeared to be less cold hardy than common persimmon cultivars. In the cold hardiness of cambium and xylem parenchyma, there was no consistance differece between the two group of cultivars. 3. The late frost during early spring appeared to cause the most critical damage to the winter bud of persimmon.
