  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the inelastic behavior and ductility capacity of reinforced concrete frame subjected to cyclic lateral load and to provide result for developing improved seismic design criteria. A computer program named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology) for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. The strength increase of concrete due to the lateral confining reinforcement has been taken into account to model the confined concrete. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected local discontinuous deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel. The proposed numerical method for the inelastic behavior and ductility capacity of reinforced concrete frame subjected to cyclic lateral load is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • Analysis of nonlinear behavior of prestressed concrete frame structures on PC is a time-consuming computing job if the problem size increase to a certain degree. Cluster system has emerged as one of promising computing environments due to its good extendibility, portability, and cost-effectiveness, comparing it with high-end work-stations or servers. In this paper, a parallel nonlinear analysis procedure of prestressed concrete frame structure is presented using cluster computing. Cluster system is configured with readily available pentium III class PCs under Win98 or Linux and fast ethernet. Parallel computing algorithms on element-wise processing parts including the calculation of stiffness matrix, element stresses and determination of material states, check of material failure and calculation of unbalanced loads are developed using MPL. Validity of the method is discussed through typical numerical examples. For the case of 4 node system, maximum speedup is 3.15 and 3.74 for Win98 and Linux, respectively. Important issues for the efficient use of cluster computing system based un PCs and ethernet are addressed.

  • A direct design method of three-dimensional frames using practical advanced analysis is presented. In this method. separate member capacity checks encompassed by the code specifications are not required. because the stability of separate members and the structure as a whole can be rigorously treated in determining the maximum strength of the structures. Advanced analysis accounts for geometric and material nonlinearities. The geometric nonlinearlity is considered by the use of stability function. The material nonlinearity is accounted for using CRC tangent modulus and parabolic function. The load-displacements predicted by the proposed analysis compare well with those given by other approaches. A design example has been presented for a 22-story frame. The analysis results show that the proposed method is suitable for adoption in practice.

  • This paper presents a preliminary study on the influence of material ductility on diagonal tension behavior of shear-wall panels. There have been a number of previous studies, which suggest that the use of high ductile material such as ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composite) significantly enhanced shear capacity of structural elements even without shear reinforcements involved. The present study emphasizes increased shear capacity of shear-wall panels by employing a unique strain-hardening ECC reinforced with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) short random fibers. Normal concrete was adopted as the reference material. Experimental investigation was performed to assess the failure mode of shear-wall panels subjected to knife-edge loading. The results from experiments show that ECC panels exhibit a more ductile failure mode and higher shear capacity when compared to ordinary concrete panels. The superior ductility of ECC was clearly reflected by micro-crack development, suppressing the localized drastic fracture typically observed in concrete specimen. This enhanced structural performance indicates that the application of ECC for a in-filled frame panel can be effective in enhancing seismic resistance of an existing frame in service.

  • The number of newly constructed traditional Korean houses, i.e., Hanoks, and light-frame buildings is increasing. However, related research is limited owing to the lack of awareness regarding safety evaluations. Therefore, this study conducted an outdoor exposure test to accurately evaluate wooden constructions. Spruce, pine, and fir (SPF) material was monitored for a year, wherein the SPF material was artificially dried under 18% moisture content, and its physical properties and color differences were measured once a month. Large differences were observed in the material's weight and moisture content, which are indexes sensitive to daily range and rainfall; however, no significant difference was found for other basic properties in the pre and post test results. Herein, $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ values represent color differences; these values exhibited a general decrease after the test. Such differences were attributed to the loss of lignin in the wood. The color difference value was high between the months of May and July, when the daily range and rainfall significantly fluctuated. Multiple regression analysis was performed on the $a^*$ value (redness indicator), daily range, rainfall, and ultraviolet index. The results indicated that the daily range influenced redness the most. According to the estimated regression equation, the daily range and redness are positively correlated. Based on the results, the types and influence of independent variables on color difference are expected to change as the wood's duration of outdoor exposure and the amount of data obtained both increase.

  • This study applied finite element analysis (FEA) to the body frame of the 200-meter class multi-legged subsea walking robot known as Crabster (CR200). The body frame of the CR200 is modeled after the ribcage of a human so that it can disperse applied external loads. It is made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Therefore, the frame is lighter and stronger than it would be if it were made of other conventional materials. In order to perform FEA for the CFRP body frame, we applied the material properties of the CFRP as obtained from a specimen test to an FE model of CFRP frame. Finally, we performed FEA with respect to the load conditions encountered when the robot is launched into and recovered from the sea. Also, we performed FEA for the frame, assuming that it was fabricated using a conventional material, in order to compare its characteristics with CFRP.

  • For the weight reduction of vehicle body up to 20∼30% compared to the conventional monocoque steel body·.in-white, most automotive manufacturers have attempted to develop the aluminum intensive body-in-white using an aluminum space frame. In this paper, the crush tests and simulations for the aluminum extrusions filled with the structural from are performed to evaluate the collapse characteristics of that light weighted material. From these studies. the effectiveness of structural for is evaluated in improving automotive crashworthiness. In order to improve the improve energy absorption capability of the aluminum space frame body, safety design modifications are performed and analyzed based on the suggested collapse initiator concepts and on the application of the aluminum extrusions filled with structural foam. The effectiveness of these design concepts on the frontal and side impact characteristics of the aluminum intensive vehicle structure is investigated and summarized.

  • The goal of this study is to investigate structural analysis and behaviors of an innovative aerial work platform truss frame whose ductility is improved by using high strength-steel UL-700. The present space truss frame can move or stop through tunnels for maintenance constructions by automatic facilities and workmanship within standardized limited building lines of tunnel. Most of all, this method overcomes problematic, which is to block cars during construction periods, seriously, of typical methods like as using truck and scaffolds for tunnel maintenance. According to evaluated appropriate design results of space truss frames of numerical examples by using a commercial MIDAS GEN program, it is verified that design parameters such as layered size, cross-sectional size, and steel material of the present space truss frame are determined to depend on characteristics such as lanes or shape of road tunnels.

  • Piercing or blanking process is widely used to manufacture most of lead frame parts, but it is difficult to analyze the real process by the actual shape through progressive dies. In this paper several stages in progressive punching are modeled by 2D and 3D configurations using $DEFORM^{TM}$ 2D/ 3D code. During the progressive stage some state variables and deformed configurations are analyzed in each model. There are three stages in the process, the deformations at each stage are cumulative. The advantages and disadvantages of these two type modeling are discussed and analyzed. The experiments are performed as a working material copper alloy through manufactured die. Computed results in load by two types are compared to experiments.
