  • Almost literature has so far proposed the modifications to IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC protocol to improve system throughput and average delay. Jitter(variance in packet delays) is, however, considered as an important QoS parameter for real-time streaming service which is popularized increasingly. Unfortunately, legacy access protocol for WLAN can't support the jitter. This paper proposes two schemes modifying the DCF MAC protocol to reduce the average value of jitter for multimedia frames arrived at received nodes. The one scheme, referred to as DCW-DCF(Decreasing Contention Window-DCF), reduces CW(Contention Window) size by half whenever a transmitted frame collided against other frames and back-off happens. Also, it increase initial CW size according as the link utilization and the collision probability increase. The other scheme, referred to as D-DIFS(Differential-DIFS), assigns different values to DIFS. That is, the DIFS interval is deceased as the number of back-off for a frame increases. In this paper, the two schemes are evaluated through simulation using ns2 and simulation results show that the proposed schemes are effective for improving the jitter property of standard WLAN.

  • In order to realize a speech coding at low bit rates, a pitch information is useful parameter. In case of extracting an average pitch information form continuous speech, the several pitch errors appear in a frame which consonant and vowel are coexistent; in the boundary between adjoining frames and beginning or ending of a sentence. In this paper, I propose an Individual Pitch (IP) extraction method using residual signals of the FIR-STREAK digital filter in order to restrict the pitch extraction errors. This method is based on not averaging pitch intervals in order to accomodate the changes in each pitch interval. As a result, in case of Ip extraction method suing FIR-STREAK digital filter, I can't find the pitch errors in a frame which consonant and vowel are consistent; in the boundary between adjoining frames and beginning or ending of a sentence. This method has the capability of being applied to many fields, such as speech coding, speech analysis, speech synthesis and speech recognition.

  • The IEEE 802.15.4 low rate wireless personal area network is a protocol suitable for wireless sensor networks. Thus there has been growing interest in the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol in the home automation networks. This paper proposes a scheduling scheme obtaining optimal parameters regarding the IEEE 802.15.4 frame and subframes in the home automation networks. Guaranteed time slots (GTS) are exploited for the delivery of real-time traffic. Given a set of the requirements for bandwidths and periods assigned to nodes in the network, the beacon interval and the active/inactive subframe duration satisfying the requirements are selected considering the low duty cycle by the proposed scheme. Based on these parameters, analytic results provide the way to efficient use of network resources including energy.

  • One interesting problem regarding wireless local area network (WLAN) ad-hoc networks is the effective mitigation of hidden nodes. The WLAN standard IEEE 802.11 provides request to send/clear to send (RTS/CTS) as mitigation for the hidden node problem; however, this causes the exposed node problem. The first 802.11 standard provided only two transmission rates, 1 and 2 Mbps, and control frames, such as RTS/CTS assumed to be sent at 1 Mbps. The 802.11 standard has been enhanced several times since then and now it supports multi-rate transmission up to 65 Mbps in the currently popular 802.11n (20 MHz channel, single stream with long guard interval). As a result, the difference in transmission rates and coverages between the data frame and control frame can be very large. However adjusting the RTS/CTS transmission rate to optimize network throughput has not been well investigated. In this paper, we propose a method to decrease the number of exposed nodes by increasing the RTS transmission rate to decrease RTS coverage. Our proposed method, Asymmetric Range by Multi-Rate Control (ARMRC), can decrease or even completely eliminate exposed nodes and improve the entire network throughput. Experimental results by simulation show that the network throughput in the proposed method is higher by 20% to 50% under certain conditions, and the proposed method is found to be effective in equalizing dispersion of throughput among nodes.

  • In this paper, a 40 dimensional segment vector with 4 frame and 7 frame width in every monosyllable interval was compressed into a 10, 14, 20 dimensional vector using K-L expansion and neural networks, and these was used to speech recognition feature parameter for CHMM. And we also compared them with CHMM added as feature parameter to the discrete duration time, the regression coefficients and the mixture distribution. In recognition test at 100 monosyllable, recognition rates of CHMM +${\bigtriangleup}$MCEP, CHMM +MIX and CHMM +DD respectively improve 1.4%, 2.36% and 2.78% over 85.19% of CHMM. And those using vector compressed by K-L expansion are less than MCEP + ${\bigtriangleup}$MCEP but those using K-L + MCEP, K-L + ${\bigtriangleup}$MCEP are almost same. Neural networks reflect more the speech dynamic variety than K-L expansion because they use the sigmoid function for the non-linear transform. Recognition rates using vector compressed by neural networks are higher than those using of K-L expansion and other methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a video summarization technique on a smartphone, based on spatiotemporal saliency. The proposed technique detects scene changes by computing the difference of the color histogram, which is robust to camera and object motion. Then the similarity between adjacent frames, face region, and frame saliency are computed to analyze the spatiotemporal saliency in a video clip. Over-segmented hierarchical tree is created using scene changes and is updated iteratively using mergence and maintenance energies computed during the analysis procedure. In the updated hierarchical tree, segmented frames are extracted by applying a greedy algorithm on the node with high saliency when it satisfies the reduction ratio and the minimum interval requested by the user. Experimental result shows that the proposed method summaries a 2 minute-length video in about 10 seconds on a commercial smartphone. The summarization quality is superior to the commercial video editing software, Muvee.

  • Recently, with the advance of computing and networking technique, the high speed internet becomes widespread, however, it is still hard job to do streaming the media which requires high network bandwidth over the internet. Previous researches for streaming over the internet mainly proposed techniques that controls the QoS(Quality of Service) of the media in proportion to the network status. Though, this could be the solution for the service provider while the service user who wants constant QoS may not satisfy with variable QoS. In the paper, we propose a network adaptive prefetching technique, PAP, for guarantee of constant QoS. The PAP prefetches frames by increasing the frame transmission rate while the available network bandwidth is high. The PAP uses the prefetched frames to guarantee the QoS while the available network bandwidth is low and increases the playout interval to prevent buffer underflow. The experiment result shows that the proposed PAP could guarantee the constant QoS by prefetching the frames adaptively to the network bandwidth with the characteristic of video stream.

  • Objective: Rehabilitative ultrasound imaging is a safe and noninvasive technique for evaluating muscle thickness. A dual probe-fixing frame (DPF) can provide visual feedback during exercises targeting specific muscles. The purpose of this research was to verify the reliability and validity of the DPF for dual-probe ultrasound (DPU)-based visual feedback exercises, allowing users to use both hands freely. Design: This cross-sectional study used repeated measures to compare muscle thickness measurements obtained using the handheld device and DPF with DPU. Methods: Twenty healthy adults participated in the study. Measurements were taken over two sessions, with a two-day interval between the sessions. The thicknesses of the rectus abdominis (RA) and transverse abdominis (TrA) muscles were measured using DPU. The DPF with DPU developed by the research team, was used along with a laptop-based muscle viewer. Bland-Altman analysis and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) calculations were used in statistical analyses to evaluate agreement and reliability, respectively. Results: The results of the Bland-Altman analysis showed small average differences between the handheld and DPF methods for both RA and TrA muscle thicknesses. Inter-rater reliability analysis showed high ICC values for DPF measurements of both RA (0.908-0.912) and TrA (0.892-741) muscle thicknesses. Intra-rater reliability analysis also showed good ICC values for measurements taken by a single examiner over two days. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate that the DPF provides reliable and valid measurements of muscle thickness during visual feedback exercises using the DPU.

  • Electronic speckle contouring(ESC) based on electronic speckle pattern interferometry is the optical method for measuring object shape by using fringe-projection techniques. This method has the advantages of being non-contact, non-destructive and a whole-field measurement of the surface under investigation. Fringes in ESC represent the difference in depth along the view direction between the master wavefront and the test component. The contour maps of three-dimensional diffuse objects can be obtained by small shifts of optical fiber carrying the dual-object-beams and 4-frame phase shifting. In this study we proposed the contouring method by shifting the collimated illumination beams through optical fiber in order to obtain the contour fringe patterns. And also, we performed the addition of incremental images through the geometrical analysis to obtain the contour fringe interval when we performed the incremental addition of images and experiments based on this method. We obtained both quantitative increment without decorrelation effect and qualitative improvement by reducing the noise of contour fringes.

  • The traffic signal has been widely used in the transport system with a fixed time interval currently. This kind of setting time was determined based on experience for vehicles to generate a waiting time while allowing pedestrians crossing the street. However, this strict setting causes inefficient problems in terms of economic and safety crossing. In this research, we propose a monitoring algorithm to detect, track and check pedestrian crossing the crosswalk by the patterns of behavior. This monitoring system ensures the safety for pedestrian and keeps the traffic flow in efficient. In this algorithm, pedestrians are detected by using HOG feature which is robust to illumination changes in outdoor environment. According to a complex computation, the parallel process with the GPU as well as CPU is adopted for real-time processing. Therefore, pedestrians are tracked by the relationship of hue channel in image sequence according to the predefined pedestrian zone. Finally, the system checks the pedestrians' crossing on the crosswalk by its HOG based behavior patterns. In experiments, the parallel processing by both GPU and CPU was performed so that the result reaches 16 FPS (Frame Per Second). The accuracy of detection and tracking was 93.7% and 91.2%, respectively.
