Harmony search algorithm for optimum design of steel frame structures: A comparative study with other optimization methods

  • In this article, a harmony search algorithm is presented for optimum design of steel frame structures. Harmony search is a meta-heuristic search method which has been developed recently. It is based on the analogy between the performance process of natural music and searching for solutions of optimization problems. The design algorithms obtain minimum weight frames by selecting suitable sections from a standard set of steel sections such as American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) wide-flange (W) shapes. Stress constraints of AISC Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and AISC Allowable Stress Design (ASD) specifications, maximum (lateral displacement) and interstorey drift constraints, and also size constraint for columns were imposed on frames. The results of harmony search algorithm were compared to those of the other optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithm, optimality criterion and simulated annealing for two planar and two space frame structures taken from the literature. The comparisons showed that the harmony search algorithm yielded lighter designs for the design examples presented.

경량 연료전지 차체프레임 설계 프로세스 (Design Process of Light-weighted Fuel Cell Vehicle Body Frame)

  • This paper presents a design process of light-weighted fuel cell vehicle (FCV) frame to meet design target of natural frequency in early design stage. At first, using validated FE model for the current design, thickness optimization was carried out. Next. optimization process, comprised of beam model size optimization, shell model design and shell model thickness optimization, was investigated for two frame types. In addition, in order to ensure hydrogen tanks safety against rear impact load, structural collapse characteristics was estimated for the rear frame model finally produced from the previous optimization process and, with the target of equal collapse characteristics to the current design model, structural modification with small weight increase was studied through static structural collapse analyses. The same attempt was applied to the front side frame. The results explain that the proposed process enables to design light-weighted frames with high structural performance in early stage.

대차프레임의 중량감소를 위한 형상최적설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Shape Optimal Design of a Bogie Frame for the Reduction of its Weight)

  • The optimum design of a structure requires to determine economical member size and shape of a structure which satisfies the design conditions and functions. In this study, it is attempted to minimize a dead weight of the bogie frame. Therefore, shape optimization is performed for a bolster rib at first and then size optimization for the thickness of top and bottom plate. For the efficient reduction of a weight of a bogie frame, various ellipses centered at a centroid of a bolster rib are made and tried. For the shape optimization, a major axis and an eccentricity of an ellipse are chosen as design variables. From the numerical results of shape and size optimization of a bogie frame, it is known that the weight can be reduced up to 12.476 Y4717.21 kg) with displacement and stress constraints.

  • Recently, because of the growth in the leisure industry and interest in health, the demand for bicycles has increased. In this research, considering the vertical load on a bike frame under static state conditions, the deflection and mass of the bike frame were minimized by satisfying the service condition and performing optimization. The thickness of the bicycle-frame tube was set to a design variable, and its sensitivity was confirmed by an analysis of means (ANOM). To optimize the solution, a response-surface-method (RSM) model was constructed using D-Optimal and central composite design(CCD). The optimization was performed using a non-dominant sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), and the optimal solution was verified by finite-element analysis.

  • 본 논문에서는 ADSL용 칩 설계를 위한 동기화 파라미터 값을 도출하기 위하여 컴퓨터 모의수행으로 STR과 프레임동기의 성능을 분석한다. ADSL에 적합한 PLL루프를 분석하고 설계를 하며, 이러한 결과를 통하여 ADSL칩 설계를 위한 STR의 최적 파라미터 값을 얻는다. 또한 여러 가지 알고리즘으로 프레임동기를 수행할 때, 컴퓨터 모의수행으로 FER(Frame Error Rate)의 성능을 분석했고, 프레임 offset의 효과를 분석했다.

  • It is necessary for the design of lead frame punches in blanking to consider buckling because inner lead pitch of lead frame has been narrowed by miniaturization and high accumulation of semiconductor. In addition, if process variables change in press stamping process, the lift of punches is no longer influenced in wear and punches can be broken suddenly. To prevent the fracture of fine pitch lead frame punches, having considered applying reinforcement to it, this paper verified the design with buckling analysis. This study presents the optimal position and number of reinforcement to be attached to punches. Finally this study presents design rules of attaching reinforcement.

경북지방 파이프하우스의 안전골조간격에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Safety Frame Interval of Pipe Houses in Kyungpook Region)

  • As the pipe houses were constructed by imitation and routine without a structural design by now, they were often destructed by a strong wind or a heavy snowfall. The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data for the safety structural design of the pipe houses in Kyungpook region to prevent meteorological disaster. It was shown that the change of frame interval according to the safety factor under the wind load was similar that under the snow load. But the safety frame interval under the snow load was approximately 0.5-0.6m greater than that under the wind load for equal safety factor. Therefore, it seemed that the maximum safety frame interval was to be decided by the snow load. The frame of the pipe houses in Seungju region was structurally stable under the design snow load in recurrence intervals of 8-15years, but was unstable in Kolyong region.

  • Grinding has difficulty in satisfying the qualitative knowledge based on the skilled expert as well as quantitative data for all user. Design of grinding database is based on the frame-based model for utilizing the empirical and qualitative knowledge. Inthis paper, basic strategy to develop the grinding database by frame-based model, which is strongly dependent upon experience and intuition, frame-base model, which is strongly dependent upon experience and intuition, is described. Design of grinding database is based on the frame-based model for utilizing the ambiguous knowledge and inference is accomplised by the object-oriented paradigm system.

  • A high speed frame synchronization system has been realized which generates the frame sync clock from 565Mb/s data stream (the DS-5 digital multiplex hierarchy signal). The design of a frame pattern detector using a parallel detection method brings into low speed operation and resolves the problems due to the high speed operation. The frame synchronization algorithm recommended by CCITT is also realized by designing a sync mode controller. Appropriate design procedures are considered for an efficient hardware design and minimized connection lines. The CAD simulation as well as experiment show that the performance of the newly designed frame synchronization system satisfies the relevant requirements.

  • A motorcycle frame is a structure that endures the load and retains durability under various driving environments. A motorcycle has been developed with a diverse utility range, and its design has always been expanded to the newly created concept based on advanced engineering technologies. In this study, a compact motorcycle frame is considered to perform parametric studies that can enhance the stiffness of a frame with computational simulation. Finite element analysis is used to compare the deformation and stiffness of a base model and four case-models with three design-change-parameters. The parametric studies are analyzed to provide available methods that can be expected in the industrial fields of engineering design for a motorcycle frame.
