In this study, compressive strengths of three condensable composite resins(ALERT, SureFil, Solitaire), conventional hybrid composite resin(Z-100) and amalgam(HI-Aristaloy 21) according to the 6 types of cavity design(cylinder, trapezoidal, butt-joint, round bevel, long bevel and short bevel) were measured and appearance of fracture surfaces were observed with SEM, thus evaluated clinical applications of condensable composite resins according to the cavity designs. The results were as follows; 1. Compressive strengths according to experimental materials were the highest in SureFil, and Z-100, ALERT, Solitaire, HI-Aristaloy 21 in order. 2. SureFil showed the highest compressive strength(p<0.05). compressive strengths of ALERT and Solitaire were lower than that of Z-100, hybrid composite(p<0.05). 3. Compressive strengths according to specimen design were the highest in trapezoidal shape(p<0.05) and no significant difference was detected between other specimen designs. 4. The appearance of condensable composite resin under SEM was of a diverse configuration according to component of resin matrix, shapes of filler and surface treatments between resin and filler.
This paper presents the mechanical properties of a composite consisting of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin mixed with carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) pieces (CFRP/ABS). CFRP pieces made by crushing CFRP wastes were utilized in this material. Nine kinds of CFRP/ABS compounds with different weight fraction and size of CFRP pieces were prepared. Firstly, tensile and flexural tests were performed for the specimens with various CFRP content. Next, fracture surfaces of the specimens were microscopically observed to investigate fracture behavior and fiber/resin interface. Finally, the tensile modulus and strength were discussed based on the macromechanical model. It is found that the elastic modulus increases linearly with increasing CFRP content while the strength changes nonlinearly. Microscopic observation revealed that most carbon fibers are separated individually and dispersed homogeneously in ABS resin. Epoxy resin particles originally from CFRP are dispersed in ABS resin and seem to be in good contact with surrounding resin. The modulus and strength can be expressed using a macromechanical model taking account of fiber orientation, length and interfacial bonding in short fiber composites.
Interfacial adhesive strength between the fully-crosslinked and partially-crosslinked rubber layers were Investigated at the temperature range of $30{\sim}120^{\circ}C$ for four different rubbers(NR, SBR, EPDM, BIMS). The surfaces of interfacial failure were also investigated using a scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The physical interlinking played a major role in the adhesive strength between the fully-crosslinked rubber layers. When a partially-crosslinked rubber layer was bonded to the fully-crosslinked one, the chemical as well as the physical interlinking affected the adhesive strength. NR showed a "interfacial knotty tearing" pattern, while EPDM showed a typical "cross-hatched" one when the adhesive strength approached to the cohesive tear strength of each material.
This paper addresses the numerical simulation of fatigue crack growth in arbitrary 2D geometries under constant amplitude loading by the using a new finite element software. The purpose of this software is on the determination of 2D crack paths and surfaces as well as on the evaluation of components Lifetimes as a part of the damage tolerant assessment. Throughout the simulation of fatigue crack propagation an automatic adaptive mesh is carried out in the vicinity of the crack front nodes and in the elements which represent the higher stresses distribution. The fatigue crack direction and the corresponding stress-intensity factors are estimated at each small crack increment by employing the displacement extrapolation technique under facilitation of singular crack tip elements. The propagation is modeled by successive linear extensions, which are determined by the stress intensity factors under linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) assumption. The stress intensity factors range history must be recorded along the small crack increments. Upon completion of the stress intensity factors range history recording, fatigue crack propagation life of the examined specimen is predicted. A consistent transfer algorithm and a crack relaxation method are proposed and implemented for this purpose. Verification of the predicted fatigue life is validated with relevant experimental data and numerical results obtained by other researchers. The comparisons show that the program is capable of demonstrating the fatigue life prediction results as well as the fatigue crack path satisfactorily.

This paper studies the effect of using multi-scale reinforcement additives on mechanical strengths, damage performance, microstructure, and water absorption of cementitious composites. Small dosages of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or polypropylene (PP) microfibers; 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% by weight of cement; were added either separately or simultaneously into cement mortar. The experimental results show the ability of these additives to enhance the mechanical behavior of the mortar. The best improvement in compressive and flexural strengths of cement mortar reaches 28% in the case of adding a combination of 0.1% CNTs and 0.2% PP fibers for compression, and a combination of 0.2% CNTs and 0.2% PP fibers for flexure. Adding CNTs does not change the brittle mode of failure of plain mortar whereas the presence of PP fibers changes it into ductile failure and clearly enhances the fracture energy of the specimens. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images of the fracture surfaces highlights the role of CNTs in improving the adhesion between the PP fibers and the hydration products and thus enhance the ability of the fibers to mitigate cracks propagation and to enhance the mechanical performance of the mortar.
In this study, microstructure and mechanical properties and electrical conductivities of in situ Cu-Fe-Xi(Xi=Ag, Cr or Co) alloy wires obtained by cold drawing combined with intermediate heat treatments have investigated. During cold working the primary and secondary dendrite arms are aligned along the drawing direction and elongated into filaments after deformation processing. The addition of Ag was found to be more effective in reducing the microstructural scale at the given draw ratio than that of Co or Cr throughout the drawing processing. The ultimate tensile strength and the conductivity of the Cu-Fe based composites containing Ag were higher than those of Cu-Fe composites containing Co or Cr. The good mechanical and electrical properties of Cu-Fe-Ag wires may be associated with the more uniform distribution of the finer filaments in the wires containing silver. The strength of Cu-Fe-Xi composites is dependent on the spacing of the Fe filaments in accord with a Hall-Petch relationship. The fracture surfaces of all the specimens showed ductile-type fracture and iron filaments occasionally observed on the fracture surfaces.
Statement of problem : Although zirconium oxide ceramics are more and more commonly used in restorative dentistry, for many clinical applications only limited data can be found in the literature. However it is quite clear that hydrofluoric acid etching is impossible with zirconia ceramics. Therefore, other bonding techniques are required in order to lute these materials adhesively. Purpose : The purpose or this study was to evaluate the effects of surface treatments on shear bond strengths between two resin cements and a zirconia ceramic. Materials and methods : Experimental industrially manufactured yttrium-oxide-partially-stabilized zirconia ceramic discs (Adens, Korea) were used for this study. The ceramic specimens divided into five experimental groups and a control group (as received). Five surface treatments were studied 1) sandblasting with 110$\mu$m $Al_2O_3$ at 3 bars pressure 13 seconds at a distance of 10 mm, 2) flame-treated with the Silano-Pen for 5 $s/cm^3$, 3) grinding with a diamond bur. 4) sandblasting + Silano-Pen treatment, 5) diamond bur preparation + Silano-Pen treatment. Acrylic plastic tube (5 mm in height and 3 mm in diameter) were filled with composite to fabricate composite cylinders The composite cylinders were bonded to the ceramic specimens with either Superbond C&B or Panavia F resin luting agents. All cemented specimens were tested under shear loading until fracture on universal testing machine at a crosshead speed 1mm/min; the maximum load at fracture was recorded. Sheat bond strength data were analyzed with oneway analysis of variance and Tukey HSD tests (P<.05). Treated ceramic surfaces and fracture surfaces after shear testing were examined morphologically using scanning electron microscope. Results: Ceramic surface treatment with Silano-Pen after sandblasting improved the bond strength of Superbond C&B resin cement. Supevbond C& B resin cement at Silano-Pen aiker sandblasting($27.4{\pm}3.8MPa$) showed statistically higher shear bond strength than the others. Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, Superbond C& &B resin cement are suitable for cementation of zirconia ceramics and flame-treated with the Silano-Pen after sandblasting is required to enhance the bond strength.
This study was performed to evaluate the tensile strength of solder joint in titanium and the wettability of 14K gold solder on titanium. Two pieces of titanium rod 30 mm in length and 3mm in diameter were butt-soldered with a 14K gold solder using the electric resistance heating under flux-argon atmosphere, the infrared heating under argon atmosphere, and the infrared heating under vacuum-argon atmosphere. A tensile test was performed at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min, and fracture surfaces were examined by SEM. To evaluate the wettability of 14K gold solder on titanium, titanum plates of a $17{\times}17{\times}1mm$ were polished with #80-#2000 emery papers, and the spreading areas of solder 10 mg were measured by heating at 840 * for 60 seconds. The solder-matrix interface regions were etched by the solution of 10% KCN-10% (NH4)2S2O8, and analyzed by EPMA. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. The maximum tensile strength was obtained when the titanium surface was polished with #2000 emery paper and soldered using the electric resistance heating under flux-argon atmosphere. Soldering strengths showed the significant difference between the electric resistance heating and the infrared heating(p<0.05). 3. The fracture surfaces showed the aspect of brittle fracture, and the failure developed along the interfaces of solder-matrix reaction zone. 4. The EPMA data for the solder-matrix interface region revealed that the diffusion of Au and Cu occurred to the titanium matrix, and the reaction zone showed the higher contents of Au, Cu and Ti than others.

A sheet type of green body was made with the mixture of 60 wt% red clay, 20 wt% fly ash, and 20 wt% stone sludge. Indentations were made on the surfaces of sheets to investigate fracture rate of 1 to 5 mm artificial light-weight aggregates by various drying, breaking, and forming methods. Drying methods of green bodies were natural, electric oven, microwave, and fast drying by torch. Breaking methods of green bodies were ballmill Ⅰ, ballmill Ⅱ, free dropping in the box, and mechanical breaking with roller mill. The depth and width of indent on the surface of the sheet were varied and the thickness of green bodies was also changed to investigate effects of indentation on fracture rates. The highest fracture rate of 42 % among the various drying methods was obtained by microwave drying for 210 sec and the highest fracture rate of 65 % among the various breaking method was obtained by ballmill Ⅱ method. In forming method, an yield of larger aggregates than Ф = 5 mm decreased and that of smaller aggregates than Ф = 5 mm in creased with increasing depth of indentation (only in 3 mm thick green body)and with increasing thickness of green body. The size of aggregates was most homogeneous (by judging from the measurement of aspect ratio of 1 to 5 mm aggregates.) when 3 mm thick green body was rapidly dried by torch and was broken by ballmill Ⅱ method.
Objective: To study and compare the effects of different demineralization-inhibition methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) and fracture mode of an adhesive used to bond orthodontic brackets to demineralized enamel surfaces. Methods: Eighty freshly extracted, human maxillary premolars were divided into 4 equal groups and demineralized over the course of 21 days. Brackets were bonded to the demineralized enamel of teeth in Group 1. In Group 2, bonding was performed following resin infiltration ($ICON^{(R)}$, DMG, Hamburg, Germany). Before bonding, pre-treatment with acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) or solutions containing casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate with 2% neutral sodium fluoride (CPP-ACP/wF) was performed in Groups 3 and 4, respectively. The SBS values of the brackets were measured and recorded following mechanical shearing of the bracket from the tooth surface. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were determined aft er the brackets failed. Statistical comparisons were performed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey's post-tests, and G-tests. Results: Significant differences were found in some of the intergroup comparisons of the SBS values (F = 39.287, p < 0.001). No significant differences were found between the values for the APF-gel and control groups, whereas significantly higher SBS values were recorded for the resin-infiltrated and CPP-ACP/wF-treated groups. The ARI scores were also significantly different among the 4 groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Tooth surfaces exposed to resin infiltration and CPP-ACP/wF application showed higher debonding forces than the untreated, demineralized surfaces.
