Purpose: The biomechanics and kinematics of knee joint were reviewed in this article. And then the common sports injuries were presented. Anatomy and Kinetics: None of the pairs of bearing surfaces in the knee joint is exactly congruent This allows the knee six degrees of freedom of motion. Tibiofemoral Kinematics: In flexion and extension, the axis of motion is not perpendicular to the medial-lateral plane of the joint, nor is it perpendicular to the axis of longitudinal rotation. This results in coupled varus angulation and internal rotation with flexion and in valgus angulation and external rotation with extension. Patellofemoral Articulation: Loads across the patellofemoral joint are indirectly related to the angle of knee flexion and directly related to the force generated within the quadriceps mechanism. Fractures of the Patella: Nonoperative treatment is indicated if the extensor mechanism is intact and if displacement of fragment is minimal. The specific type of internal fixation depends on the fracture pattern. It is important to repair retinaculum. Acute and Recurrent Patellar Instability: The degree of dysplasia and the extent of the instability play a large part in determining the success of nonoperative treatment. Patients who experience recurrent dislocations and patients with major anatomic variations require surgery to minimize their instability. Sports Injuries in School-age Atheletes: Patellar pain in young athletes groups a number of conditions, including Idiopathic Adolescent Anterior Knee Pain, Osgood- Schlatter Disease, and Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Disease.

Metal matrix composite(MMCs) have been rapidly becoming one of the strongest candidates for structural materials for high temperature application. It is well recognized that MMCs always experience at least one large cool-down from processing temperature before my significant applied service loading. Due to the large difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the fiber and matrix, large thermal residual stresses generally develop in composites. It was reported from many previous studies that the effects of thermal residual stress on mechanical properties and fracture behavior were much more complex and dramatic than conventional engineering materials. Therefore it is crucial to evaluate the effect of heat treatment which changes the characteristic of distribution of thermal residual stress in MMCs. Single fiber composite(SFC) test based on the balance in a micromechanical model is a quite convenient method to evaluate interfacial shear strength(IFSS) and the failure mode of composite. In this study the effect of heat treatment on IFSS and the microscopic failure mechanism of MMC is investigated by combining acoustic emission(AE) technique with SFC test. The characteristic of AE signal, IFSS and microscopic failure mechanism due to heat treatment condition is discussed.

Most of the materials used in various industrial fields and also in our daily life are multi-component materials or composite materials, and it is well known that there are many cases where adhesion between the constituents within the bonded systems plays an important role. There are various types of performance evaluation tests for the bonded materials, among which tests for evaluating the bond performance under various conditions may be regarded as the most interesting ones for those engaged in work related to adhesion. I have studied on the mechanism of adhesion form the rheological standpoint with my colleagues, including some students from Korea, and I am very happy to be able to have a talk on some of our research works. In Japan, the so-called "adhesives" are usually classified into two categories;adhesives and pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA). Adhesives are the materials which solidify after bonding and are after used as the structural adhesives because the adhesive strength is comparatively strong. On the other hand, the pressure sensitive adhesives never solidify and are used as PSA tapes, labels or decals. About the adhesives, we have examined the dependence of adhesive strength(shear, tensile, peel) upon both temperature and rate of deformation, and found out some empirical rules which are applicable to most of the adhesive systems. We have also developed a simplified theory of adhesion, which is deseribed in terms of mechanical equivalent mode1 and a few failure criteria. Although some of the common rules can be accounted for according to this theory, it must be pointed out that a fracture mechanical approach ms inevitable especially in the region where the meehanical relaxation time of the adhesive is extremely large [W. W. Lim and H. Mizumachi]. About the pressure sensitive adhesives, we have studied on the PSA performance (peel, tack, holding power) as a function of both the viscoelastic properties and surface chemical properties of the materials, and found out some rules, and again we have developed a theory which deseribes the mechanism. And in addition, we have studied on the miscibility between linear polymers and oligomers, because PSA is generally manufactured by blending gums and tackifier resins. Many phase diagrams have been found and some of them have been analyzed on thermodynamic basis, and it became evident that the miscibility is a very important factor in PSA [H. J. Kin and H. Mizumachi]. In this presentation, I want to emphasize the fact that the adhesion performance is closely related to the structure/property of the adhesives.adhesives.
To study the evolution mechanism of cracks in rocks with multiple defects, rock-like samples with multiple defects, such as strip-shaped through-going cracks and cavity groups, are used, and the crack propagation law and changes in AE (acoustic emission) and strain of cavity groups under different inclination angles are studied. According to the test results, an increase in the cavity group inclination angle can facilitate the initial damage degree of the rock and weaken the crack initiation stress; the initial crack initiation direction is approximately 90°, and the extension angle is approximately 75~90° from the strip-shaped through-going cracks; thus, the relationship between crack development and cavity group initiation strengthens. The specific performance is as follows: when the initiation angle is 30°, the cracks between the cavities in the cavity group develop relatively independently along the parallel direction of the external load; when the angle is 75°, the cracks between the cavities in the cavity group can interpenetrate, and slip can occur along the inclination of the cavity group under the action of the shear mechanism rupture. With the increase in the inclination angle of the cavity group, the AE energy fluctuation frequency at the peak stress increases, and the stress drop is obvious. The larger the cavity group inclination angle is, the more obvious the energy accumulation and the more severe the rock damage; when the cavity group angle is 30° or 75°, the peak strain of the local area below the strip-shaped through-going fracture plane is approximately three times that when the cavity group angle is 45° and 60°, indicating that cracks are easily generated in the local area monitored by the strain gauge at this angle, and the further development of the cracks weakens the strength of the rock, thereby increasing the probability of major engineering quality damage. The research results will have important reference value for hazard prevention in underground engineering projects through rock with natural and artificial defects, including tunnels and air-raid shelters.

Yttria-stabilized TZP alloyed with pentavalent oxides $(Ta_2O_5,\;Nb_2O_5)$ were fabricated by the conventional sintering method at $1500^{\circ}C$ in air to construct the simplified ternary phase diagram. The phase stability of tetragonal -$ZrO_2$ from the quasi-binary system $ZrO_2-YTa(Nb)O_4$, which do not transform to monoclinic-$ZrO_2$ even for a wide range of grain size and annealing temperature, was investigated to determine composition region of the non-transformable $t-ZrO_2$ solid solution$(NT_{ss})$. Phase stability of $NT_{ss}$ was probably due to the enhanced stability of $_YTa(Nb)O4$ having the tetragonal fergusonite structure. It was experimentally found that mixtures having $NT_{ss}$ alloyed with $T_{ss}$ by weight%% showed both excellent phase stability of $t-ZrO_2$ and fracture toughness even though the calculated composition of the mixture /was located outside $NT_{ss}$ composition region.
Hysteretic steel damper has been applied mainly to steel buildings. However, the usage in RC buildings is rapidly increasing recently. In order to apply the steel hysteretic damper in RC buildings, supporting elements of the damper should have sufficient strength and stiffness suitable for transferring damper forces to beams and walls. But due to the inevitable damage in reinforced concrete elements due to cracking, identification of the load transfer mechanism from damper to supporting element and hysteretic characteristics of the supporting element are extremely important in evaluating the damper behavior. Experiments were carried out on connection details between RC walls and supporting elements of the steel plate typed damper such as EaSy damper. The test results showed that fracture patterns of all specimens were almost identical except in the crack number and pattern associated with shear loading condition. Among the specimens, HD-3 shoed a well distributed cracks patterns along with good performance with respect to energy dissipation capacity, stiffness deterioration, and strength degradation.
This article presents a study on the tensile properties of hypoeutectoid steels with different ferrite-pearlite microstructures. Nine kinds of hypoeutectoid steel specimens were fabricated by varying carbon content and isothermal transformation temperature. The microstructural factors such as ferrite & pearlite fraction, interlamellar spacing, and cementite thickness were quantitatively measured and then tensile tests were carried out on the specimens in order to investigate the correlation of the microstructural factors with strength and ductility. The pearlite volume fraction usually increased with decreasing transformation temperature, while the pearlite interlamellar spacing and cementite thickness decreased mostly with decreasing transformation temperature, irrespective of carbon content. The tensile test results showed that the yield and tensile strengths of all the steel specimens increased and their ductility was also improved as the transformation temperature decreased. For the steel specimens investigated, the difference in the transformation temperature dependence of strength and ductility could be explained by the fact that the variation in pearlite fraction with transformation temperature noticeably affected various microstructural factors such as pearlite interlamellar spacing and cementite thickness associated with pearlite fracture mechanism such as void initiation, cementite necking, and cracking.

A discrete element approach is used to investigate the effects of confining stress on the shear behaviour of joint's bridge area. A punch-through shear test is used to model the concrete cracks under different shear and confining stresses. Assuming a plane strain condition, special rectangular models are prepared with dimension of $75mm{\times}100mm$. Within the specimen model and near its four corners, four equally spaced vertical notches of the same depths are provided so that the central portion of the model remains intact. The lengths of notches are 35 mm. and these models are sequentially subjected to different confining pressures ranging from 2.5 to 15 MPa. The axial load is applied to the punch through the central portion of the model. This testing and models show that the failure process is mostly governed by the confining pressure. The shear strengths of the specimens are related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. The shear behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of induced shear bands which are increased by increasing the confining pressure while the cracks propagation lengths are decreased. The failure stress and the crack initiation stress both are increased due to confining pressure increase. As a whole, the mechanisms of brittle shear failure changes to that of the progressive failure by increasing the confining pressure.

In the present paper, it is attempted to reconfirm the "Intelligent" material properties using both the sintered TiNi/Al(1100) matrix composite made by powder metallurgy method and the squeeze-casted TiNi/Al6061 specimens. A metal matrix composite is, its fault has been considered to deteriorate a strength of composite by heating residual stress of the matrix. Therefore, it is necessary to remove a tensile residual stress, to produce the strength of a composite better. On the contrary, if compressive residual stress happens in matrix of composite in place of tensile residual stress, it will make the strength of composite better. So that, this paper introduce the development of a high strength of composite, by using compressive residual stress well, on the study. By using these specimens, shape memory strengthening effects in tensile strength and fatigue crack propagation above inverse transformation temperature of TiNi fiber were investigated. We occurs the prestrain and volume fraction for to discuss the effects of a composite strength. Moreover, by SEM observation, the effect of the residual stress at the interface between Al matrix and TiNi fiber and some brittle precipitation layers such as inter metallic compounds on fracture mechanisms was discussed metallurgically.urgically.

DIN CK35 (JIS S35CK) steels have been used as a material in fuel pump blocks for marine engines. Failures in the inner surface of a drilling hole, due to the initiation of fatigue cracks have been frequently reported. However, the mechanism initiating these cracks and growths has not been clearly diagnosed yet. This study was conducted using a scraped fuel pump block, containing an initiated fatigue crack in the inner surface of a drilling hole. Initially, the cracks and fractured surfaces inside the block were investigated using an optical microscope and a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). In addition, microstructure observation, fatigue life test and fatigue crack growth test were performed using a specimen, which was taken from the same block. Results from these tests are summarized as follows; (1) The early crack in the block was supposed to occur inside the inner surface of the drilling hole. (2) The fatigue endurance of this material was about 330 Mpa. (3) The early crack was generated in the cavitations created by the breakdown of a big inclusion, or separation between the big inclusion and the base metal, in which the fundamental ingredients of the inclusion were C, 5, and Mn. (4) In order to prevent these types of failures, the suppression of inclusions inflow by improving the casting process, formation of fine inclusions by applying a heat treatment process, and coating of the surface of the drilling hole were required.
