In the present study, the homogeneous model is used to simulate the natural convection heat transfer of the CuO-water nanofluid in a concentric annular enclosure. Simulations have been carried while the Rayleigh number ranges from $10^3$ to $10^6$, solid volume fraction ranges from 0.01 to 0.04 and the radius ratio varies between 0.1 and 0.7. Results are presented in the form of streamlines, isotherm patterns and averaged Nusselt numbers for different values of solid volume fraction, radius ratio of the annulus and Rayleigh numbers. The results show that by decreasing the radius ratio and/or increasing the Rayleigh number, the averaged Nusselt number increases. Also the heat transfer rate increases as increased solid volume fractions.

Effective thermal conductivity of three-phase composites, consisting of matrix and two kinds of spherical inclusions, has been derived as an explicit form by extending modified Eshelby model (MEM) for two-phase composites. The present results are compared with those by differential effective medium model (DEMM), which are also compared with the experimental results of two- and three-phase composites in the literatures to be validated. For two-phase composites, the results by MEM are better than those by DEMM for the inclusion volume fraction smaller than 0.5. Comparisons between the results by two models and experimental results have been made for three-phase composite, resulting in that MEM predicts better than DEMM for smaller volume fraction of the inclusion having larger inclusion-to-matrix thermal conductivity ratio, but DEMM predicts better as its volume fraction increases. It has been observed through parametric study that its volume fraction is the critical factor affecting the deviation of predictions by the two models. The results by them show a good agreement with the three-phase composite proposed by Molina et al..
In vitro true digestibility of cup-plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.) is higher than other alternative forages and comparative to alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) even at the high neutral detergent fiber (NDF) concentration. This study was conducted to determine whether the digestion kinetic parameters of cup-plant could explain high in vitro true digestibility of cup-plant at the several NDF levels. Cup-plant and alfalfa were both collected in Arlington and Lancaster, Wisconsin to meet the NDF content within 40 to 50% range. The collected samples were incubated with rumen juice to investigate the digestion kinetics at 3, 6, 9, 14, 20, 28, 36, 48, and 72 h. Kinetics was estimated by the model $R=D_0\;e-k(t-L)+U$ where R is residue remaining at time t, and $D_0$ is digestible fraction, k is digestion rate constant, L is discrete lag time, and U is indigestible fraction. Parameters of the model were estimated by the direct nonlinear least squares (DNLS) method. Digestion rate and potential extent of digestion were not statistically different in either forage. However, alfalfa had shorter lag time (p<0.05). The indigestible fraction increased with maturation in alfalfa and in cup-plant (p<0.05). The ratio of indigestible fraction to acid detergent lignin (ADL) was higher in cup-plant than in alfalfa (p<0.05). From the results, alfalfa is probably digested more rapidly than cup-plant, however, cup-plant maintains higher digestibility with maturation due to a relatively slower increase of indigestible fraction in NDF.

The current investigation is the first endeavor to apply the full layerwise finite element method (FEM) in free vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) composite plates reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) in thermal environment. Unlike the equivalent single-layer (ESL) theories, the layerwise FEM focuses on all three-dimensional (3D) effects. The GPLs weight fraction is presumed invariable in each layer but varies through the plate thickness in a layerwise model. The modified Halpin-Tsai model is employed to acquire the effective Young's modulus. The rule of mixtures is applied to specify the effective Poisson's ratio and mass density. First, the current method is validated by comparing the numerical results with those stated in the available works. Next, a thorough numerical study is performed to examine the influence of various factors involving the pattern of distribution, weight fraction, geometry, and size of GPLs, together with the thickness-to-span ratio, thermal environment, and boundary conditions of the plate, on its free vibration behaviors. Numerical results demonstrate that employing a small percentage of GPL as reinforcement considerably grows the natural frequencies of the pure epoxy. Also, distributing more square-shaped GPLs, involving a smaller amount of graphene layers, and vicinity to the upper and lower surfaces make it the most efficient method to enhance the free vibration behaviors of the plate.
A two-phase flow observed in a heat exchanger or nuclear power generation often has a profound effect on undesirable noise or flow characteristics. Void fraction, which refers to the ratio of gas (or liquid) to the total fluid, affects heat transfer coefficient, vibration and so forth. In other words, void fraction is one of most important parameters in two-phase flow since it contributes to comprehend the characteristics of two-phase flow. We developed a two-phase flow visualization system to measure cross-sectional and volumetric void fractions by using quick closing valves and image processing software. With this system, we could observe the plug, slug, and stratified flow patterns of two-phase flow and measure a myriad of void fractions. As a consequence of the experiment, we found that the estimated void fractions were largely coincident with the predictive values by Chisholm model.
The mechanical and thermal behaviors of polyamide-6/clay nanocomposites were studied using the continuum-based, micromechanical models such as Mori-Tanaka, Halpin-Tsai and shear lag. Mechanic-based model prediction provides a better understanding regarding the dependence of the nanocomposites' reinforcement efficiency on conventional filler structural parameters such as filler aspect ratio ($\alpha$), filler orientation (S), filler weight fraction (${\Psi}_f$), and filler/matrix stiffness ratio ($E_f/E_m$). For an intercalated and exfoliated nanocomposite, an effective, filler-based, micromechanical model that includes effective filler structural parameters, the number of platelets per stack (n) and the silicate inter-layer spacing ($d_{001}$), is proposed to describe the mesoscopic intercalated filler and the nanoscopic exfoliated filler. The proposed model nicely captures the experimental modulus behaviors for both intercalated and exfoliated nanocomposites. In addition, the model prediction of the heat distortion temperature is examined for nanocomposites with different filler aspect ratio. The predicted heat distortion temperature appears to be reasonable compared to the heat distortion temperature obtained by experimental tests. Based on both the experimental results and model prediction, the reinforcement efficiency and heat resistance of the polyamide-6/clay nanocomposites definitely depend on both conventional (${\alpha},\;S,\;{\Psi}_f,\;E_f/E_m$) and effective (n, $d_{001}$) filler structural parameters.

A screening study was performed in order to resolve the flow, combustion and emission characteristics of the gas furmace with co-axial diffusion flane burner. A control-valume based finite-difference method with the power-law scheme was employed for discretization. Numerical procedure for the differential equation was used by SIMPLEST to enclosute rapid converge. A k-.varepsilon. model was incorporated for the closure of turbulence. The mass fraction and mixture fraction were calculated by cinserved scalar method. An equilibrium analysis was employed to determine the concentration of radicals in the product stream and conserbation equations were them solved for N amd NO by Zelovich reaction scheme. The method was exercised in a simple one-dimensional case first, to determine the effects of air ratio, temperature and residence time on NO formation and applied to a furnace with co-axial diffusion flame burner.
A series of reaction-sintered SiC was fabricated from preforms with varying volume fractions of two resin-coated SiC particles of different sizes (63 and $18{\mu}m$). The electrical resistivity and mechanical strength were eventually optimized at the small particle volume fraction of $0.3{\sim}0.4$, at which point the porosity of the preform was minimized. This study experimentally proves that additional processes after the formation of the preform, such as silicon infiltration and reaction sintering, do not apparently alter the optimum volume fraction of the preform packing, predicted by an existing analytical model based on solid packing. Thus, the volume fraction of particles of different sizes can be determined practically through the solid packing model to fabricate RSSCs with optimal properties.
In oder to analyze the effect of operating conditions on pulverized coal combustion, a numerical study is conducted at the pulverized coal combustor. Eulerian approach is used for the gas phase, whereas Lagrangian approach is used for the particle phase. Turbulence is modeled using standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. The description of species transport and combustion chemistry is based on the mixture fraction/probability density function(PDF) approach. Radiation is modeled using P-l model. The turbulent dispersion of particles is modeled using discrete random walk model. Swirl number of secondary air affects the flame front, particle residence time and carbon conversion. Primary/Secondary air mass ratio also affects the flame front but little affects the carbon conversion and particle residence time. Air-fuel ratio only affects the flame front due to lack of oxygen. Radiation strongly affects the flame front and gas temperature distribution because pulverized coal flame of high temperature is considered.
