This study attempts to test the classifying performance of a neural network and thereby examine its applicability to the signals distorted in a shallow water environment. Linear frequency modulated(LFM) signals are simulated by using an acoustic model and also measured through sea experiment. The network is constructed to have three layers and trained on both data sets. To get normalized power spectra as feature vectors, the study considers the three transforms : shot-time Fourier transform (STFT), wavelet transform (WT) and pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution (PWVD). After trained on the simulated signals over water depth, the network gives over 95% performance with the signal to noise ratio (SNR) being up to-10 dB. Among the transforms, the PWVD presents the best performance particularly in a highly noisy condition. The network performs worse with the summer sound speed profile than with the winter profile. It is also expected to present much different performance by the variation of bottom property. When the network is trained on the measured signals, it gives a little better results than that trained on the simulated data. In conclusion, the simulated signals are successfully applied to training a network, and the trained network performs well in classifying the signals distorted by a surrounding environment and corrupted by noise.

This paper presents two methods of obtaining approximate analytic solutions for the temperature distributions and heat flow to two-dimensional transient heat conduction problems in a finite strip with constant thermal properties using the Heat Balance Integral. The methods introduced in this study are as follows; one using the Heat Balance Integral only, and the other successively using the Heat Balance Integral and an exact analytic method. Both methods are applicable to a large number of the two-dimensional unsteady conduction problems in finite regions such as extended surfaces with uniform thickness, but in this paper only solutions for the unsteady problems in a finite strip with boundary condition at the base expressed in terms of step function are provided as an illustration. Results obtained by both methods are compared with those by the exact two-dimensional transient analysis. It is found that both approximate methods generate small time solutions, which can not be obtained easily by any exact analytic method for small values of Fourier numbers. In the case of applying the successive use of the Heat Balance Integral and Laplace transforms, the analysis shows good agreement with the exact solutions for any Fourier number in the range of Biot numbers less than 0.5.

This paper presents the method for structure borne noise analysis of a flexible body in multibody system. The proposed method is the superposition method using the flexible multibody dynamic analysis and the finite element one. This method is executed in 3 steps. In the 1st step, time dependent quantities such as dynamic loads, modal coordinates and gross body motion of the flexible body are calculated through a flexible multibody dynamic analysis. And frequency response functions of those time dependent quantities are computed through Fourier transforms. In the 2nd step, acoustic pressure coefficients are obtained through structure-acoustic coupling analyses by the finite element method. In the final step, frequency responses of acoustic pressure at the acoustic nodes are recovered through linear superposition of frequency response functions with acoustic pressure coefficients. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified in the numerical example of a simple car model.
New Image registration techniques are developed for determining geometric distortions between two images of the same scene. First, the properties of the Fourier transform of a two dimensional function under the affine transformation are given. As a result, techniques for the estimation of the coefficients of the distortion model using the spectral frequency information are developed. Image registration can be achieved by applying the fast Fourier transform (FFT) technique for cross correlation of misregistered imagery to determine spatial distances. The correlation results may be rather broad, making detection of the peak difficult, what can be suppressed by enhancing cross-correlation technique. Yield greatly improves the delectability and high precision of image misregistration.
This paper introduced some advantages of the time-frequency analysis of vibration and investigated, using the time-frequency transform, the characteristics of the transient motion of a tractor seat, which occurred during the tractor traversed over a rectangular obstacle on the flat surface. The characteristics of the short-time courier and wavelet transforms as time-frequency analysis methods were introduced and discussed to figure out which is more suitable to the analysis of the transient motions of agricultural tractors. Using each transform, transient vibration of a tractor seat was analyzed. Results of the analysis showed that the transient vibration of the seat was influenced by the natural frequencies of vertical mode of chassis, pitching mode of engine and pitching mode of cab of the tractor. The time sequence of the natural mode of tractor vibration was also revealed by the time-frequency analysis. The vibration path analysis by the time-frequency transform showed that the vibration energies transmitted from the front mounts to the seat were less than those from the rear mounts. The energy reduction ratios between the cab mounts and seat were also estimated to be about 72∼78%. The front mounts showed larger reduction than the rear mounts. However, the reduction difference between the right and left sides mounts was negligibly small. The short time Fourier transform was found to be a proper method for investigating the transient motions of farm machines and their effects on the ride vibration.

Complementing recent advances made in the field of structural health monitoring and damage detection, the concept of a wireless sensing network with distributed computational power is proposed. The fundamental building block of the proposed sensing network is a wireless sensing unit capable of acquiring measurement data, interrogating the data and transmitting the data in real time. The computational core of a prototype wireless sensing unit can potentially be utilized for execution of embedded engineering analyses such as damage detection and system identification. To illustrate the computational capabilities of the proposed wireless sensing unit, the fast Fourier transform and auto-regressive time-series modeling are locally executed by the unit. Fast Fourier transforms and auto-regressive models are two important techniques that have been previously used for the identification of damage in structural systems. Their embedment illustrates the computational capabilities of the prototype wireless sensing unit and suggests strong potential for unit installation in automated structural health monitoring systems.

In this study , we tried to test the classification performance of a neural netow and thereby to examine its applicability to the signals distorted by a shallow water einvironment . We conducted an acoustic experiment iin a shallow sea near Pohang, Korea in which water depth is about 60m. The signals, on which the network has been tested, is ilinear frequency modulated ones centered on one of the frequencies, 200, 400, 600 and 800 Hz, each being swept up or down with bandwidth 100Hz. we considered two transforms, STFT(short-time Fourier transform) and PWVD (pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution), form which power spectra were derived. The training signals were simulated using an acoutic model based on the Fourier synthesis scheme. When the network has been trained on the measured signals of center frequency 600Hz,it gave a little better results than that trained onthe simulated . With the center frequencies varied, the overall performance reached over 90% except one case of center frequency 800Hz. With the feature extraction techniques(STFT and PWVD) varied, the network showed performance comparable to each other . In conclusion , the signals which have been simulated with water depth were successully applied to training a neural network, and the trained network performed well in classifying the signals distorted by a surrounding environment and corrupted by noise.
The high-order Laplacian-type filter, which is capable of providing isotropic and sharp cut-off filtering on the spherical domain, is essential in processing geophysical data. In this study, a spherical high-order filter was designed by combining the Fourier method with finite difference-method in the longitude and latitude, respectively. The regular grid system was employed in the filter, which has uniform angular spacing including the poles. The singularity at poles was eliminated by incorporating variable transforms and continuity-matching boundary conditions across poles. The high-order filter was assessed using the Rossby-Haurwitz wave, the observed geopotential, and observed wind field. The performance of the filter was found comparable to the filter based on the Galerkin procedure. The filter, employing the finite difference method, can be designed to give any target order of accuracy, which is an important advantage being unavailable in other methods. The computational complexity is represented with 2n-1 diagonal matrices solver with n being the target order of accuracy. Along with the availability of arbitrary target-order, it is also advantageous that the filter can adopt the reduced grid to increase computational efficiency.

The increasing demand for non-sinusoidal currents affects the quality of distribution networks. Harmonic detection is a crucial step in the cancellation of those components by active power filters. In this paper, the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is compared with different implementations based on Fourier transforms, demonstrating their equivalences and the advantages provided by the former. We demonstrate that the phase error in the presence of grid frequency deviations and the transient length are reduced by half in comparison to the discrete Fourier transform. A novel algorithm is developed to provide frequency adaptation to the DCT, taking advantage of its good features. The window width is adjusted in real time according to the actual value of the grid fundamental frequency by means of a phase-locked loop. A technique based on dithering is employed to overcome the limitation caused by the truncation of the window number of samples, so the frequency resolution is enhanced. The theoretical approach is verified by simulated and experimental results.

There is much redundancy in image data such as TV signals and many techniques to redice it have been studied. In this paper, Hadamard transform is studied through computer simulation and experimental model. Each element of hadamard matrix is either +1 or -1, and the row vectors are orthogonal to another. Its hardware implementation is the simplest of the usual orthogonal transforms because addition and sulbraction are necessary to calculate transformed signals, while not only addition but multiplication are necessary in digital Fourier transform, etc. Linclon data (64$ imes$64) are simulated using 8th-order and 16th-order Hadamard transform, and 8th-order is implemented to hardware. Theoretical calculation and experimental result of 8th-order show that 2.0 bits/sample are required for good quality.
