The purpose of this study was to identify the species of the woods used in the main building (Daewoongjeon) of Bulgapsa temple in YeongGwang. Eighty eight woods sampled were divided into four parts; pillars(21), rafters(19), purlins(16) and other wood elements(12). Four species were identified; Pinus spp. (hard pines; diploxylon), Abies spp., Quercus spp. and Zelkova serrata Makino. Pillars and corner-angle rafters were mainly Zelkova; however, other wood elements were mostly Pinus spp. The high ratio of Zelkova in this building would be ascribed to the preference of this species to pines owing to its superior quality before the late Chosun Dynasty.
In Korea, powdery mildew has been observed on Quercus rubra, commonly called the northern red oak tree. Based on its morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses, the fungal agent was identified as Erysiphe quercicola, but it was distinct from the other four Erysiphe species, specialized to Quercus species. This is the first confirmed report on the identity of powdery mildew found on Q. rubra in Korea. This finding can help understand the host expansion of E. quercicola and the biodiversity of powdery mildew on Quercus species.
We tested five specimens of each species at each of five constant external heat flux levels (10, 15, 20, 25. and 35㎾/㎡). An Cone heater was used to expose the wood specimens to the heat flux. The 100-by 100-by 50-㎜ specimens were of four species: Redwood, White oak, Douglas fir, Maple. In result of test, charring of wood exposed to a constant external heat flux can be considered a linear with function of time. As compared with the charring rates Redwood is most rapidly, but on the other hand Douglas fir is most slowly. When the external heat flux is 35㎾/㎡, the charring rate is rapidly about twice then 10㎾/㎡. Using the Equation (2), the estimates for u were 1.02, 1.16, 1.23, 1.32, and 1.44 for the 10, 15, 20, 25, and 35 kw/m2 constant external exposure levels, respectively.
This study was conducted to predict the tractive resistance for tree length logs being skidded by ground based logging machine. The mathematical models for predicting the tractive resistance of tree length log have been developed. The tractive resistance is expressed as a function of log weight, skidding coefficient, and ground gradient. The skidding coefficients for four species of Korean pine, Japanese larch, mongolian oak, and cork oak were determined under laboratory condition using universal testing machine and small soil bin, Three different tractive resistance models were applied to four species and compared with each other. The ratios (T/Wt) of skidding-line tensions to the skidding log weight increased linearly with increment in ground gradient. Semi-ground skidding generally required smaller tensions than ground skidding under given condition. Results of this study can be utilized as basic information for logging machine selection and power requirement of skidding winch.
A comparative study on the minimal areas and the community structures in pine IPinus densiflora) and oak (Quercus mongolica) frests was carried out. Basic tools used in the present study were species diversity and classical ayntaxonomy (Z.-M. School) of the phytocoenosis. Total 120 nest-quadrats in 40 stands situated at the syngeographical region of the Lindero-Quercion mongolicae were investigated. Each stand was classified on the basis of species combination, and species abundance was computed with net contribution degree (NCD). Composition ratio of plant-from and rate of actual species diversity (ASD) to syntaxa were computed for better interpretation of the minimal areas. Four syntaxa were structured: Saso-Quercetum mongolicae, Viola albida-Quercus mongolica community, Carex hummilis-Pinus densiflora community and Juniperus rigida-Pinus densiflora community. Their minimal areas were determined as 305, 196, 169, and 81 ㎡, respectively. Aconsistent regularity between species composition ratio and community structure in the multi-layered plant community was hardly found. The minimal areas increased linearly with increasing rate of ASD, and a phytocoenosis developed by diverse arboreta in the understory and shrub-layer should be investigated with larger sampling sizes.
This study was conducted in order to determine changes in the growth responses of Quercus serrata and Q. aliena which are potential natural vegetation of riverine in Korea under four light gradients within ambient and elevated $CO_2$ concentration and temperature levels. As a result, growth responses of two species were affected by light factor. Aboveground, belowground, plant biomass and root:shoot ratio of two species grown under the control and treatment were increased in the highest light level. Plant biomass and root:shoot ratio of two oak species were not significantly affected by elevated $CO_2$ and temperature, while aboveground biomass of them was lower in the treatment than control. Belowground biomass of Q. serrata was lower in the treatment than control under the gradients that are more than 70% of light level. As light intensity increases, elevated $CO_2$ and temperature promoted root growth of two oak species but had a negative effect on aboveground growth. According to the principal component analysis(PCA), two oak species were discriminatively arranged based on factor 1 and 2. Also, the reactions towards the ambient and elevated $CO_2$ and temperature were slightly different. It is clearly visible that all features relied on axis 1 and axis II are highly correlated with most variables except for stem and shoot length.
In order to know the effect of seed size on the early plant life history, we measured the rate of germination, early growth and winter survival of four oak species with different acorn size (large, medium and small). The mean germination rate was higher in the larger seed species ($Q.$$acutissima$ and ($Q.$$variabilis$) than those of the smaller seed species ($Q.$$aliena$ and $Q.$$serrata$). Within $Q.$$variabilis$, the germination rate decreased with larger acorn size class but that of rest other species was not significantly affected by the acorn size. The early mean growth rate decreased with acorn size in the order of $Q.$$acutissima$, $Q.$$variabilis$, $Q.$$aliena$ and $Q.$$serrata$. The early mean growth rate was higher in large or medium size than in small size of $Q.$$acutissima$ and $Q.$$variabilis$, but it showed no difference with acorn size in $Q.$$aliena$ and $Q.$$serrata$. Survival rate in winter was the highest in the medium acorn size among 4 oak species, the seedling of $Q.$$serrata$ and $Q.$$variabilis$ did not survive in both large and small acorn size. These results indicate that seed size influences a different effect on the early plant life history stage.
The major substrates used in soilless growing media are peat moss and perlite, where peat moss is a limited and expensive natural resource. Determination of appropriate substrates based on technical and economic feasibility is the vital aspect of research and the key to success in any soilless production system. This research work was performed to evaluate different low-cost and sustainable alternative substrate as soilless growing media for horticulture plant. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of sawdust species and steam treatment, for physico-chemical properties and growth of horticultural plant. This study involves the physical and chemical characterization and growth test of four substrate (pine sawdust, oak sawdust, steamed pine sawdust and steamed oak sawdust) in order to evaluate their use as components of growing media. Steamed oak sawdust ($121^{\circ}C$, 30 min) showed adequate physical and chemical properties compared to peat moss for their use as growing media. The growing media were prepared using different mixture proportion to grow Brassica campestris L., Festuca arundinacea and Lespedeza cyrtobotrya Miq. The highest germination, stem length and leaf area of Brassica campestris L., Festuca arundinacea and Lespedeza cyrtobotrya were observed in 30 minute steamed oak sawdust mixture growing media. The steam treatment condition of sawdust used in the growing media significantly positive affected the germination, the stem length and the leaf area.
The environmental gradient analyses were applied for the distribution patterns of species populations in mt. moak provincial park in korea. The species populations were sequentially ordered along the environmental gradients such as soil moisture, soil ph, soil organic matter content and elevation and were grouped into seven ecological groups by the two-dimensional analyses of temperature-moisture gradient : zelkova serrata group on mesic-lower parts near the streames and well drained stony slopes, carpinus tschonoskii group on mesic-middle parts, quercus acutissima group on lower parts destroyed by human activities, quercus variabilis group on xeric-middle parts, quercus serrata group on xeric-upper middle parts, quercus mongolica group on xeric-upper parts and pinus densiflora group on xeric-rock ridge lines, hillocks and lower parts interfered by human. Four forest vegetation types, zelkova forest dominated by the c. tschonoskii group on mesic-middle parts, oak forest dominated by the groups of q. acutissima, q. variabilis, q. serrata and q. mongolica on xeric sites and pine forest dominated by the p. densiflora group on dry and poor sites, were separated in mosaic chart by the two-dimensional analysis.
We isolated endophytic fungi from the roots of Quercus spp. in Korea. The isolates were identified based on morphological and molecular characteristics from the nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer and large subunit of rDNA regions. We confirmed that the four species we isolated - Oidiodendron citrinum, Acremonium crotocinigenum, Mammaria echinobotryoides, and Pleotrichocladium opacum - have not been recorded previously in Korea. Herein, we present their morphological characteristics and the result of phylogenetic analysis.
