The effect of anti freezing solution liquid film on the frost prevention is experimentally investigated. It is desirable that the antifreezing solution spreads widely on the heat exchanger surface forming thin liquid film to prevent frost nucleation and reduce the thermal resistance across the film. A porous layer coating technique is adopted to improve the wettedness of the anti freezing solution on a parallel plate heat exchanger. The antifreezing solution spreads widely on the heat exchanger surface with 100 $\mu$m thickness by the capillary force resulting from the porous structure. It is observed that the antifreezing solution liquid film prevents a parallel plate heat exchanger from frosting. The reductions of heat and mass transfer rate caused by thin liquid film are only $1\~2\%$ compared with those for non-liquid film surface.
In the automotive industry hydroforming of sheet metal pairs have received special attention because materials for various sheet metal components of vehicles have changed into the high strength steel, aluminum, and titanium blank having low formability. Uniform deformation over the whole region is a main advantage in the sheet hydroforming process. Because upper and lower parts could be produced simultaneously with one tool, hydroforming of sheet metal pairs is competitive in reducing the lead-time and development cost. In this paper, the multi-stage hydroforming process of sheet pair is proposed in order to increase the formability of a structural part like the oil pan shape. The upper die for forming oil pan shape is divided into two parts which can move separately. By the finite element simulation, the design parameters such as geometry of the tool and detailed specification of hydraulic pump were calculated and verified. For the strict comparison of the proposed process, the blank holding force is kept to a constant value during deformation by hydraulic valve. The deformed shape and strain distribution of the manufactured parts with the proposed process are compared with the results of simulation. In the multi-stage hydroforming process, maximum thickness strain was improved by more than 30 percent.
Interplanetary space is filled with dust particles originating mainly from comets and asteroids. Such interplanetary dust particles lose their angular momentum by olar radiation pressure, causing the dust grains to slowly spiral inward Poynting-Robertson effect). As dust particles move into the Sun under the influence of Poynting-Robertson drag force, they may encounter regions of resonance just outside planetary orbits, and be trapped by their gravities, forming the density enhancements in the dust cloud (circumsolar resonance ring). The circumsolar resonance ring near the Earth orbit was detected in the zodiacal cloud through observations of infrared space telescopes. So far, there is no observational evidence other than Earth because of the detection difficulty from Earth bounded orbit. A Venus Climate Orbiter, AKATSUKI, will provide a unique opportunity to study the Venusian resonance ring. It equips a near-infrared camera for the observations of the zodiacal light during the cruising phase. Here we consider whether Venus gravity produces the circumsolar resonance ring around the orbit. We thus perform the dynamical simulation of micron-sized dust particles released outside the Earth orbit. We consider solar radiation pressure, solar gravity, and planetary perturbations. It is found that about 40 % of the dust particles passing through the Venus orbit are trapped by the gravity. Based on the simulation, we estimate the brightness of the Venusian resonance ring from AKATSUKI's locations.
A study on vegetation in the Mangyeong River and Dongjin River basins and the surrounding regions of the Saemangeum Reclaimed Land was conducted in a series of efforts to determine the expected ecological changes in the salt marshes, to restore their vegetation, to explore the restoring force of halophyte, to examine the community mechanism and, ultimately, to rehabilitate marshy land vegetation along the lakeside, coastal dune and salt marshes of the Saemangeum Project Area. The findings of the study may be summed up as follows: Five species such as Suaeda japonica, Salicornia herbacea, Atriplex gmelini, Aster tripolium and Suaeda asparagoides that are mostly distributed in the estuary of the Saemangeum Reclaimed Land were analyzed to examine the mechanism of halophyte to maintain their community. To find out the strategies of plants for survival and the cause of forming community structure, a research was made as for appearance ratio of young sapling. From the results of laboratory analysis into dynamics of the saplings of halophyte, it was revealed that the germination ratio of the dry area and submerged area decreases in the order of Suaeda asparagoides, Suaeda japonica, Salicornia herbacea, Atriplex gmelini and Aster tripolium.

Wrinkling in the flange and wall of a deep-drawn part is one of the major defects in sheet metal processes. Wrinkling is influenced by many factors, such as material properties, shape of the body, forming conditions, stress state and thickness, etc. It is difficult to analyze the wrinkling initiation and growth according to the factors because the effects of the factors are very complex and the wrinkling behavior may show wide variation even though small deviation of factors. In this study, the influence of wrinkling parameters, such as material properties (Al1050, Al5052), the blank holding force and the drawing depth on the wrinkling initiation and growth is investigated by using the experimental method and the dynamic explicit finite element analysis. From the results, it is shown that the dynamic explicit finite element method can be used effectively to prevent the wrinkling problems advancely in the deep drawing process. Also, there is a good agreement between the experimental result and the dynamic explicit finite element analysis.

In recent years, with the growing interest in electric vehicles, the development of a Neighborhood Electronic Vehicle (NEV) made for urban driving is accelerating. Existing NEVs are set to ~0.3 - 0.35 with more emphasis on performance rather than minimizing air resistance. In this paper, a NEV with a streamlined car body is proposed. The shape of dolphins and sharks was applied to the car body to minimize the air resistance generated when driving. Also, the performance of the vehicle was estimated by calculating the traction force and the roll couple, etc. To check the drag coefficient of the car body, finite element analysis software (COMSOL Multiphysics) was used. The frame of the vehicle is divided into the forward and the rear parts. Carbon pipe is used for the frame by MIG welding. The car body of the vehicle was fabricated by forming carbon fiber. This study confirmed the general possibility of using NEVs through driving experiments.

We have studied the alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) on homeotropic polymeric surface that is scanned using an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip by optical polarizing microscopy and computer simulation. The scanned areas on one substrate are 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$ 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$ 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$, and 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$ 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and this substrate is assembled to another substrate coated. with homeotropic polymer. The fabricated micro-LC cell using two substrates does not show any hysteresis and disclination lines inside the nano-rubbing areas, while changing voltage up and down. This indicates that the pretilt angle exists in the areas, thereby forming a hybrid LC configuration. From the experimental and computer simulation results, we can understand that the AFM rubbing clearly changes surface status of homeotropic alignment layer and causes the pretilt angle to an initial scanning direction.
Currently, studies on weight reduction and fuel efficiency increase are the most important topics in the automotive industry and many studies are under way. Among them, weight reduction is the best way to raise fuel efficiency and solve environmental pollution and resource depletion. Materials such as aluminum, magnesium and carbon curing materials can be found in lightweight materials. Among these, research on improvement of bonding technology and manufacturing method of materials and improvement of material properties through study of ultrahigh strength steel sheet is expected to be the biggest part of material weight reduction. As the strength of the ultra hight strength steel sheet increases during forming, it is difficult to obtain the dimensional accuracy as the elastic restoring force increases compared to the hardness or high strength steel sheet. It is known that the spring back phenomenon is affected by various factors depending on the raw material and processing process. We have conducted analytical evaluations and studies to analyze the springback that occurs according to the cross-sectional shape of the ultra high tensile steel sheet.
Tube hydroforming process is generally consisted with pre-bending, preforming and hydroforming processes. Among forming defects which may occur in tube hydroforming such as buckling, wrinkling and bursting, the wrinkling and bursting by local instability under excessive tensile stress mode were mainly caused by thinning phenomenon in the manufacturing process. Thus the accurate prediction and suitable evaluation of the thinning phenomenon play an important role in designing and producing the successfully hydroformed parts without any failures. In this work, the formability on hydroformed part for automobile, i.e. engine cradle, was evaluated using finite element analysis. The initial tube radius, loading path with axial feeding force and internal pressure, and preformed configuration after preforming process were considered as the dominant process parameters in total tube hydroforming process. The effects on these process parameters could be confirmed through the numerical experiments with respect to several kinds of finite element simulation conditions. The degree of enhancement on formability with each process parameters such as initial tube radius, loading path and preform configuration were also compared. Therefore, it is noted that the evaluation approach of the formability on hydroformed parts for lots of industrial fields proposed in this study will provide one of feasible methods to satisfy the increasing practical demands for the improvement of the formability in tube hydroforming processes.

Experimental study for supersonic co-flowing fluidic thrust vectoring control utilizing the secondary flow is performed. The characteristics of the thrust vectoring of two dimensional supersonic flow (Mach 2.0) are studied by Schlieren flow visualization and highly-accurate multi-component force measurements using the load cells. It is observed that the thrust deflection angle initially decreases and increases again forming a V-shaped variation as the pressure of the secondary flow increases. Characteristics of the performance coefficients of the system are also studied, and the detailed operating conditions for higher performance of the technique are suggested.
