  • The photochemical transformation of carbon monoxide in aqueous solution has been investigated at $25{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$using ZnO as a photocatalyst. After irradiation of 253.7 nm UV light in the solution, carboxylation and carbonylation processes were carried out, and the formation of formic acid, oxalic acid, glyoxylic acid, formaldehyde and glyoxal was observed. The formation of the products depended on the pH values in the solution. The yield of formaldehyde and glyoxal increased in acidic solution whereas it decreased in basic solution. When the pH values in the solution increased above 11.5, the yield of formic acid increased rapidly. The initial quantum yields of the products were determined and the probable mechanisms for the reactions were presented on the basis of the products analysis.

  • A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array detector (DAD) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was established for the simultaneous determination of chlorogenic acid (1), sweroside (2), luteolin-7-O-glucoside (3), (E)-aldosecologanin (4) and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (5) from Lonicera joponica flower buds. The optimal chromatographic conditions were obtained on an ODS column (5 ${\mu}m$, 4.6${\times}$150 mm) with the column temperature $25^{\circ}C$. The mobile phase was composed of (A) water with 0.1% formic acid and (B) acetonitrile with 0.1% formic acid using a gradient elution, the flow rate was 0.3 ml/min. Detection wavelength was set at 250 nm. All calibration curves showed good linear regression ($r^2$>0.994) within test ranges. The developed method provided satisfactory precision and accuracy with overall intra-day and inter-day variations of 0.05${\sim}$1.95% and 0.15${\sim}$2.26%, respectively, and the overall recoveries of 97.71${\sim}$103.65% for the five compounds analyzed. The verified method was successfully applied to quantitative determination of the three types (phenolic compounds, iridoids and flavonoids) of bioactive compounds in 21 commercial L. japonica flower buds samples from different markets in Korea and China. The analytical results demonstrated that the contents of the five analytes vary significantly with sources.

  • The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary organic acid mixture(lactic acid 12%, formic acid 9%, citric acid 5%, butyric acid 5% and phosphoric acid 6%) on growth performance, organ weight, blood immunological parameter and intestinal villi morphology in broilers. Dietary treatments included 1) CON (basal diet), 2) OA1 (basal diet + 0.1% organic acid mixture) and 3) OA2 (basal diet + 0.2% organic acid mixture). Four hundred eighty hatched Arbor Acre broiler chickens were housed in 24 pens of 20 birds each. Eight replicate pens were allotted into each treatment by completely randomized design. Daily weight gain, feed intake and feed/gain were not significantly different among the treatments. In organ weight, that of gizzard was significantly heavier in OA2 than CON (Linear effect = 0.034). However, those of spleen and intestine were not significantly different among the treatments. Blood immunological parameters such as RBC, WBC and lymphocyte were not significantly difference. In intestinal villi morphology, villi length was increased in OA1 compared to CON (Quadratic effect = 0.050). In conclusion, 0.2% organic acid mixture was effective to improve gizzard weight of broilers.

  • The objective of this study was to characterize the lactate metabolism and lipolysis in Emmental cheese made of Korean raw milk throughout the ripening periods; 14 d at $10^{\circ}C$, 42 d at $23^{\circ}C$, and 30 d at $4^{\circ}C$. Emmental cheese was made using a commercial starter culture with propionic acid bacteria (PAB) and without PAB as a control on the pilot plant scale. Changes in the contents of five organic acids (citric, lactic, formic, acetic, and propionic acid) and individual free fatty acids (FFAs) were measured using HPLC/PDA and GC/FID. As a result of propionic fermentation by PAB, the concentration of acetic acid and propionic acid increased up to 1.5 and 6.1 g/kg, respectively and the most dramatic increased occurred when incubated in the hot room ($23^{\circ}C$). Lactic, citric, and formic acid contents were 2.6, 2.5 and 0.8 g/kg at the end of ripening, respectively. As a result of lipolysis, the amount of total FFAs was 6,628.2 mg/kg. Compared to the control, levels of individual FFAs from butyric (C6:0) to linoleic (C18:2) acids increased significantly (p<0.05) during the ripening period. Especially, 65.1% of total FFAs was released in the $23^{\circ}C$ room and the most abundant FFAs were palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0) and oleic acid (C18:1). These results demonstrated that the lipolysis of Emmental cheese was strongly affected by bacterial lipase from PAB.

  • This investigation was conducted to study the effect of dietary formic acid (FA) and propionic acid (PA) mixture on inhibitory effect of Salmonella pullorum in layer chicks. Nine groups of one day-old layer chicks in addition to positive and negative controls, were fed with acids treated feed containing mixture of different acids concentrations, from 0.5% and 0.5% up to 1.5% and 1.5% FA and PA, respectively. Positive and negative controls were fed untreated feed. Groups except the negative control were challenged orally on day three with $10^4$ cfu/ml S. pullorum. Cloacal swabs were taken at three successive days and at 7, 14 and 21 days of challenge. After 1, 2 and 3 weeks after challenge, 4 chicks from each group were sacrificed and crop and cecal contents were examined for S. pullorum and pH. The numbers of S. pullorum positive culture from the excretion of all treated groups except groups treated with mixture of 0.5% and 0.5%, 1% and 0.5%, 0.5% and 1% FA and PA decreased significantly (p<0.05) as compared with the positive control. The mortality rates of all treated groups except the group treated with 0.5% FA and 0.5% PA were decreased significantly (p<0.05) as compared with the positive control. The treatment significantly (p<0.05) lowered the pH of the crop and cecal contents in all groups except the group treated with 0.5% FA and 0.5% PA as compared with the control. Also, the treatment significantly (p<0.05) lowered the pH of the crop and cecal contents in all groups after three weeks of treatment compared to the first and second weeks. The treatments significantly (p<0.05) lowered the frequency of S. pullorum recovery from crop and cecal contents in six groups treated with 1.5 and 0.5, 1 and 1, 1.5 and 1, 0.5 and 1.5, 1 and 1.5, 1.5% and 1.5% FA and PA respectively. These results indicate that addition of FA and PA mixture in a total concentration of 2 % or more to the diet of newly hatched infected layer chicks significantly decreases the crop and cecal colonization by S. pullorum and significantly decreases S. pullorum fecal excretion and reduced the chick mortality rate.

  • Acid and base catalyzed intramolecular cyclizations of N-benzoylthioureidoacetal, contain-ing four functional groups adjacent to thiourea such as benzocarbamoyl, acetal, thioure and amide, were investigated. The condensation reaction of N-benzoyl thiocarbamoylgly-cine amide in the presence of 10% aqueous NaOH provided 1-(2,2-dimethoxy)ethyl-imi- dazolidine-2-thione exclusively. In the presence of pyridine, it was transformed to 2- thiohydantoin. N-Benzoyl thiocarbamoyl glycine amide was completely transformed to an iminothiazolidine exclusively in the presence of Lewis acid such as borontrifluoride ether-ate or trimethylsilyl iodide. 1-(2,2-Dimethoxy)ethyl-imidazolidine-2-thione was transformed to imidazole[2,1-b]thiazole and pyrazino[5,1-a]imidazole in the presence of $BF_3$.$ET_2$O and formic acid, respectively.
