Effects of Heating Time and Storage Temperature on the Oxidative Stability of Heated Palm Oil (가열시간과 저장온도가 가열팜유의 산화안정성에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of heating time and storage temperature on the oxidative stability of heated palm oil were studied. Palm oil was heated at $150^{\circ}C$ for 0, 1, 10 or 20 min and stored at 4, 20 or $65^{\circ}C$. The oxidative stability of the sample was evaluated by determining peroxide value of the oil and measuring the volatiles in the headspace of the sample. Significant difference in the peroxide or volatile formation was observed (p<0.05) in heated palm oils between samples stored at 4 or $20^{\circ}C$ and those stored at $65^{\circ}C$. Pentane, hexanal, heptane and total volatiles increased with heating time, while storage temperature did not significantly affect their formation, indicating that heating time played more important role in volatile formation in the heated palm oil than storage temperature. However, adverse results were observed for the formation of peroxide. The interaction effect of heating time and storage temperature on the oxidative stability of heated palm oil was also observed.

  • In a conventional and lean operating engine, the state of mixture is very important in the combustion and emission characteristics. Lean operation is known to decrease the formation while maintaining a good fuel economy, but the unstable operation due to misfire and erratic combustion prevents engines from being operated at very lean mixtures, so both combustion rates and exhaust emission formation need to be satisfied comparably. In this study, it is designed and experimented the modified engine, and analyzed the combustion and exhaust emission according to the change of engine speed and with adding ozone. The conclusions were drawn out and enumerated as follows. 1. At the experimental result of automobile diesel engine, it has been verified that the formation of particulate matter(PM) gas is able to be lower with the addition of optimum quantities of ozone. 2. Carbon monoxide(CO) was formed by the lack of oxygen and the thermal dissociation in the combustion process. Therefore, with the change of swirl valve's position and addition of oxygen and ozone, CO formation was decreased by the increasing of excessive O2, but it was increased by the temperature of combustion gas growing higher. As a result of the two effects, CO formation was decreased in this study. 3. Hydrocarbon(HC) was formed by the lack of O2, and the flow of mixture in cylinder. According to opening of the swirl valve and adding the oxygen and ozone, hydrocarbon gas was decreased by 20%, 9%, and 27.5%, respectively. 4. Nitric oxides($NO_x$) was strongly affected by the combustion gas temperature. As a result of respectively experimental conditions, $NO_x$ formation was increased about 20% due to (be the) high(er) combustion gas temperature.

An Infection Model of Apple White Rot Based on Conidial Germination and Appressorium Formation of Botryosphaeria dothidea

  • Regression models for determining infection periods of apple white rot were developed based on conidial germination and appressorium formation of Botryosphaeria dothidea. A total of 120 apple fruits were inoculated with the fungal conidial suspension and subjected to 6 temperatures and 10 wetness periods. Conidia germinated and produced appressoria, exhibiting swollen tips of germ tubes on the fruit surface. Conidial germination (G) increased with temperature (T) and wetness period (W), and was described as $G=-89.273+7.649T+7.056W-0.109T^{2}-0.085W^{2}-0.066TW(R^{2}=0.75)$. Less than 2 hr of wetness period were enough for conidia to germinate at 25 to $30^{\circ}C$. Effects of temperature and wetness period on appressorium formation (A) could be explained as $A=-1.540-2.375W+0.045W^{2}+0.213TW(R^{2}=0.77)$. The relationship between conidial germination and appressorium formation ($A_g$) was described as$A_g=0.381-0.227G+0.005G^{2}(R^{2}=0.67)$, suggesting that conidial germination may have to reach approximately $43.7\%$ to initiate appressorium formation. Using the regression equation for conidial germination and the criterion of $43.7\%$ conidial germination, an infection model was developed to determine infection periods based on temperature and wetness period. The infection model with the criterion of $43.7\%$ conidial germination was apparently more conservative than the appressorium formation model in determining possibility of apple infection. The infection model seemed sensitive to variable weather conditions, suggesting possible use of the model for timing fungicide sprays to control white rot of apples in practice.

An Experimental Study on Spray Characteristics of Directly Injected Bio-Ethanol-Gasoline Blended Fuel By Varying Fuel Temperature (직접분사식 바이오 에탄올-가솔린 혼합연료의 연료온도에 따른 분무 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • As environment problem became a worldwide issue, countries are tightening regulations regarding greenhouse gas reduction and improvement of air pollution problems. With these circumstances, one of the renewable energies produced from biomass is getting attention. Bio-ethanol, which is applicable to SI engine, showed a positive effect on the PFI (Port Fuel Injection) type. However, Ethanol has a problem in homogeneous mixture formation because it has high latent heat of vaporization characteristics and in the GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) type, mixture formation is required quickly after fuel injection. Particularly, South Korea is one of the countries with great temperature variation among seasons. With this reason, South Korea supply fuel additive for smooth engine operation during winter. Therefore, experimental study and investigation about application possibility of blending fuel is necessary. This paper demonstrates the spray characteristics by using the CVC direct injection and setting the bio-ethanol blending fuel temperature close to the temperature during each seasons: -7, 25, $35^{\circ}C$. The diameter and the width of the CVC are 86mm and 39mm. High-pressure fuel supply system was used for target injection pressure. High-speed camera was used for spray visualization. The experiment was conducted by setting the injection pressure and ambient pressure according to each temperature of bio-ethanol blending fuel as a parameter. The result of spray visualization experiment demonstrates that as the temperature of the fuel is lower, the atomization quality is lower, and this increase spray penetration and make mixture formation difficult. Injection strategy according to fuel temperature and bio-ethanol blending rate is needed for improving characteristics.

Temperature-Dependent Hydrolysis Reactions of U(VI) Studied by TRLFS

  • Temperature-dependent hydrolysis behaviors of aqueous U(VI) species were investigated with time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) in the temperature range from 15 to $75^{\circ}C$. The formation of four different U(VI) hydrolysis species was measured at pHs from 1 to 7. The predominant presence of $UO{_2}^{2+}$, $(UO_2)_2(OH){_2}^{2+}$, $(UO_2)_3(OH){_5}^+$, and $(UO_2)_3(OH){_7}^-$ species were identified based on the spectroscopic properties such as fluorescence wavelengths and fluorescence lifetimes. With an increasing temperature, a remarkable decrement in the fluorescence lifetime for all U(VI) hydrolysis species was observed, representing the dynamic quenching behavior. Furthermore, the increase in the fluorescence intensity of the further hydrolyzed U(VI) species was clearly observed at an elevated temperature, showing stronger hydrolysis reactions with increasing temperatures. The formation constants of the U(VI) hydrolysis species were calculated to be $log\;K{^0}_{2,2}=-4.0{\pm}0.6$ for $(UO_2)_2(OH){_2}^{2+}$, $log\;K{^0}_{3,5}=-15.0{\pm}0.3$ for $(UO_2)_3(OH){_5}^+$, and $log\;K{^0}_{3,7}=-27.7{\pm}0.7$ for $(UO_2)_3(OH){_7}^-$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and I = 0 M. The specific ion interaction theory (SIT) was applied for the extrapolation of the formation constants to infinitely diluted solution. The results of temperature-dependent hydrolysis behavior in terms of the U(VI) fluorescence were compared and validated with those obtained using computational methods (DQUANT and constant enthalpy equation). Both results matched well with each other. The reaction enthalpies and entropies that are vital for the computational methods were determined by a combination of the van't Hoff equation and the Gibbs free energy equation. The temperature-dependent hydrolysis reaction of the U(VI) species indicates the transition of a major U(VI) species by means of geothermal gradient and decay heat from the radioactive isotopes, representing the necessity of deeper consideration in the safety assessment of geologic repository.

Heat transport characteristics by heat generation of electrochemical reactions in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (고분자전해질 연료전지에서 전기화학반응 열생성에 의한 열전달특성)

  • In proton exchange membrane fuel cell, the heat is generated at the catalyst layer as result of exothermic electrochemical reaction. This heat increases temperature of gas diffusion layer and membrane whose conductivity is very sensitive to humidity, function of temperature. So it is very important to analysis heat transfer through fuel cell to maintain temperature at specified range. In this paper numerical simulation was done including reversible, irreversible, ionic resistance, water formation loss to source term of energy equation. Results show that irreversible and water formation loss contributes mainly to energy source term and as current density increases, all of energy source terms become increased and Nusselt number is increased as results of more heat generation. Particularly irreversible loss is found to be predominant among the all energy source and water formation at cathode channel influences the temperature distribution of fuel cell greatly.

  • Indium Tin Oxide(ITO) thin film is transparent to visible ray and conductive in electricity. It is seen that the samples made by the sputtering process have high transmission rate to visible ray and high adhesion , but the planar type magnetron sputtering process with is very well known in industrial region have a defect of partial erosion on the surface of target and a high loss of target and also since the substrate is positioned in plasma, the damage on thin film surface is caused by the reaction with plasma. In cylindrical magnetron sputtering system. it is known that the loss of target is little , the damage of thin film is very little and the adhesion of thin film with substrate is strong. In this study, we have made ITO thin film in the cylindrical DC magnetron system with the variable of substrate temperature , magnetic field, vacuum condution and the applied voltage. The general temperature for formation on ITO is asked at 350 $^{\circ}C$~400$^{\circ}C$ but we have made ITO is low temperature(80-150$^{\circ}C$) By studing electrical and optical properties of ITO thin fims made by varing several condition, we have searched the optimal condition for formation in the best ITO in low temperature.

  • An study has been performed with axisymmetric coflow diffusion flames to investigate the influence of air-side fuel side dilution and initial preheated temperature on the soot formation in methan/air flames. Soot quantities are determined by using PLII(Planar Laser Induced Incandescence), such a $C_2$H$_2$ major species(CH$_4$, $O_2$, $N_2$) and temperature are simulated by chemkin code. The numerical analysis was performed with transport properties and detailed reaction mechanisms m axisymmetric coflow diffusion flames. The study of how flame temperature and $N_2$ dilution of air and fuel side influence the soot concentrations is focused. Soot concentrations results on PLII show that preheated temperature contributes to an increase in the soot volume fraction, and soot formation Is more productive to air side dilution than to fuel side dilution. $C_2$H$_2$ concentrations have a similar tendency to soot concentrations.

Phosphate Removal in Wastewater by Tobermolite (Tobermolite를 이용한 폐수내 인산염제거)

  • This study is carried out to get the basic design parameters for phospate removal facilites from wastewater by Tobermolite. The phosphate removal by the apatite formation on the surface was affected by several important factors, temperature, ions present in wastewater stream, contact time, recirculation rate, and etc. In case of the temperature, with the increase of temperature, the apatite formation was accelerated. When temperature increased from $15^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$, removal efficiency of phosphate increased from 83 % to 93 %. An increase of calcium and fluoride ion content increase the apatite formation, however, bicarbonate and magnesium ion inhibited the crystallization of apatite. As expected, when the recirculation rate was increased from 1 Q to 3 Q, at EBCT (Empty Bed Contact Time) 60min enhanced removal efficiency was observed. The more the recirculation rate increased, the more the removal efficiency increased. According to the results of column experiment using an actual wastewater with low and high phosphate concentration (5 mg/L and 50 mg/L-P), the removal efficiency was 77 % at EBCT of 45 min, and 80 % at 60 min. It was suggested that optimum EBCT was 45 min.

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Small Slush Maker (소형 슬러시 제조기의 전열현상에 관한 연구)

  • Tests were conducted to obtain heat transfer coefficients during slush formation from 10% sucrose solution. The slush was made by scraping the ice formed on the cylinder. Cold brine was supplied inside of the cylinder to cool the outer surface. Below a certain brine temperature, which was $5^{\circ}C$ in this study, the solution was supercooled, and suddenly turned into ice. The super-cooling increases as the brine temperature increased. During slush formation, the heat transfer coefficient oscillated significantly, due to periodic removal of ice chunk form the surface. The average heat transfer coefficient during slush formation was approximately twice of that obtained during single phase cooling. The heat transfer coefficient was also affected by the brine temperature with increasing heat transfer coefficient at lower brine temperature.
