This study was conducted to predict the tractive resistance for tree length logs being skidded by ground based logging machine. The mathematical models for predicting the tractive resistance of tree length log have been developed. The tractive resistance is expressed as a function of log weight, skidding coefficient, and ground gradient. The skidding coefficients for four species of Korean pine, Japanese larch, mongolian oak, and cork oak were determined under laboratory condition using universal testing machine and small soil bin, Three different tractive resistance models were applied to four species and compared with each other. The ratios (T/Wt) of skidding-line tensions to the skidding log weight increased linearly with increment in ground gradient. Semi-ground skidding generally required smaller tensions than ground skidding under given condition. Results of this study can be utilized as basic information for logging machine selection and power requirement of skidding winch.

Detection of fire accelerants from fire residues is critical to determine whether the case was arson or accidental fire. However, to develop a standardized model for determining the presence or absence of fire accelerants was not easy because of high temperature which cause disappearance or combustion of components of fire accelerants. In this study, logistic regression, random forest, and support vector machine models were trained and evaluated from a total of 728 GC-MS analysis data obtained from actual fire residues. Mean classification accuracies of the three models were 63 %, 81 %, and 84 %, respectively, and in particular, mean AU-PR values of the three models were evaluated as 0.68, 0.86, and 0.86, respectively, showing fine performances of random forest and support vector machine models.

Early detection of forest fires is essential in preventing large-scale forest fires. Predicting forest fires serves as a vital early detection method, leading to various related studies. However, many previous studies focused solely on climate and geographic factors, overlooking human factors, which significantly contribute to forest fires. This study aims to develop forest fire prediction models that take into account human, weather and geographical factors. This study conducted a comparative analysis of four machine learning models alongside the logistic regression model, using forest fire data from Gangwon-do spanning 2003 to 2020. The results indicate that XG Boost models performed the best (AUC=0.925), closely followed by Random Forest (AUC=0.920), both of which are machine learning techniques. Lastly, the study analyzed the relative importance of various factors through permutation feature importance analysis to derive operational insights. While meteorological factors showed a greater impact compared to human factors, various human factors were also found to be significant.
Dialog system is becoming a new dominant interaction way between human and computer. It allows people to be provided with various services through natural language. The dialog system has a common structure of a pipeline consisting of several modules (e.g., speech recognition, natural language understanding, and dialog management). In this paper, we tackle a task of domain classification for the natural language understanding module by employing machine learning models such as convolutional neural network and random forest. For our dataset of seven service domains, we showed that the random forest model achieved the best performance (F1 score 0.97). As a future work, we will keep finding a better approach for domain classification by investigating other machine learning models.
In order to develop pedestrian navigation service that provides optimal pedestrian routes based on pedestrian satisfaction levels, it is required to develop a prediction model that can estimate a pedestrian's satisfaction level given a certain condition. Thus, the aim of the present study is to develop a pedestrian satisfaction prediction model based on three machine learning algorithms: Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and Artificial Neural Network models. The 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Pedestrian Satisfaction Survey Data in Seoul, Korea are used to train and test the machine learning models. As a result, the Random Forest model shows the best prediction performance among the three (Accuracy: 0.798, Recall: 0.906, Precision: 0.842, F1 Score: 0.873, AUC: 0.795). The performance of Artificial Neural Network is the second (Accuracy: 0.773, Recall: 0.917, Precision: 0.811, F1 Score: 0.868, AUC: 0.738) and Logistic Regression model's performance follows the second (Accuracy: 0.764, Recall: 1.000, Precision: 0.764, F1 Score: 0.868, AUC: 0.575). The precision score of the Random Forest model implies that approximately 84.2% of pedestrians may be satisfied if they walk the areas, suggested by the Random Forest model.
In this paper, a study was conducted to predict natural disasters in Afghanistan based on machine learning. Natural disasters need to be prepared not only in Korea but also in other vulnerable countries. Every year in Afghanistan, natural disasters(snow, earthquake, drought, flood) cause property and casualties. We decided to conduct research on this phenomenon because we thought that the damage would be small if we were to prepare for it. The Azure Machine Learning Studio used in the study has the advantage of being more visible and easier to use than other Machine Learning tools. Decision Forest is a model for classifying into decision tree types. Decision forest enables intuitive analysis as a model that is easy to analyze results and presents key variables and separation criteria. Also, since it is a nonparametric model, it is free to assume (normality, independence, equal dispersion) required by the statistical model. Finally, linear/non-linear relationships can be searched considering interactions between variables. Therefore, the study used decision forest. The study found that overall accuracy was 89 percent and average accuracy was 97 percent. Although the results of the experiment showed a little high accuracy, items with low natural disaster frequency were less accurate due to lack of learning. By learning and complementing more data, overall accuracy can be improved, and damage can be reduced by predicting natural disasters.
The accurate prediction of box office in the early stage is crucial for film industry to make better managerial decision. With aims to improve the prediction performance, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate the use of machine learning methods. We tested both classification and regression based methods including k-NN, SVM and Random Forest. We first evaluate input variables, which show that reputation-related information generated during the first two-week period after release is significant. Prediction test results show that regression based methods provides lower prediction error, and Random Forest particularly outperforms other machine learning methods. Regression based method has better prediction power when films have small box office earnings. On the other hand, classification based method works better for predicting large box office earnings.

Terrestrial Gross Primary Production (GPP) is the largest global carbon flux, and forest ecosystems are important because of the ability to store much more significant amounts of carbon than other terrestrial ecosystems. There have been several attempts to estimate GPP using mechanism-based models. However, mechanism-based models including biological, chemical, and physical processes are limited due to a lack of flexibility in predicting non-stationary ecological processes, which are caused by a local and global change. Instead mechanism-free methods are strongly recommended to estimate nonlinear dynamics that occur in nature like GPP. Therefore, we used the mechanism-free machine learning techniques to estimate the daily GPP. In this study, support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF) and artificial neural network (ANN) were used and compared with the traditional multiple linear regression model (LM). MODIS products and meteorological parameters from eddy covariance data were employed to train the machine learning and LM models from 2006 to 2013. GPP prediction models were compared with daily GPP from eddy covariance measurement in a deciduous forest in South Korea in 2014 and 2015. Statistical analysis including correlation coefficient (R), root mean square error (RMSE) and mean squared error (MSE) were used to evaluate the performance of models. In general, the models from machine-learning algorithms (R = 0.85 - 0.93, MSE = 1.00 - 2.05, p < 0.001) showed better performance than linear regression model (R = 0.82 - 0.92, MSE = 1.24 - 2.45, p < 0.001). These results provide insight into high predictability and the possibility of expansion through the use of the mechanism-free machine-learning models and remote sensing for predicting non-stationary ecological processes such as seasonal GPP.
This study assesses forest fire susceptibility in Gangwon-do, South Korea, which hosts the largest forested area in the nation and constitutes ~21% of the country's forested land. With 81% of its terrain forested, Gangwon-do is particularly susceptible to wildfires, as evidenced by the fact that seven out of the ten most extensive wildfires in Korea have occurred in this region, with significant ecological and economic implications. Here, we analyze 480 historical wildfire occurrences in Gangwon-do between 2003 and 2019 using 17 predictor variables of wildfire occurrence. We utilized three machine learning algorithms—random forest, logistic regression, and support vector machine—to construct wildfire susceptibility prediction models and identify the best-performing model for Gangwon-do. Forest and soil map data were integrated as important indicators of wildfire susceptibility and enhanced the precision of the three models in identifying areas at high risk of wildfires. Of the three models examined, the random forest model showed the best predictive performance, with an area-under-the-curve value of 0.936. The findings of this study, especially the maps generated by the models, are expected to offer important guidance to local governments in formulating effective management and conservation strategies. These strategies aim to ensure the sustainable preservation of forest resources and to enhance the well-being of communities situated in areas adjacent to forests. Furthermore, the outcomes of this study are anticipated to contribute to the safeguarding of forest resources and biodiversity and to the development of comprehensive plans for forest resource protection, biodiversity conservation, and environmental management.
The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze suicide factors of adolescents using the Random Forest algorithm. According to statistics on the cause of death by the National Statistical Office in 2019, suicide was the highest cause of death in the 10-19 age group, which is a major social problem. Using machine learning algorithms, research can predict whether individual adolescents think of suicide without investigating suicidal ideation and can contribute to protecting adolescents and analyzing factors that affect suicide, establishing effective intervention measures. As a result of predicting with the random forest algorithm, it can be said that the possibility of identifying and predicting suicide factors of adolescents was confirmed. To increase the accuracy of the results, continuous research on the factors that induce youth suicide is necessary.
