  • In this study, we fabricated single grain YBCO bulk superconductors with control of the distance between the seed and the upper surface of the YBCO compacts. The magnetic levitation force of the YBa2Cu3O7 superconducting bulk, which corresponds to the energy amount of the superconducting bulk, was measured to be 32.634 N at the center of the bulk where the seed was placed. Under field cooling conditions, a capture magnetic force of 2.17 kG was observed at the center of the bulk. The trapped magnetic force curve corresponding to the stability of the superconducting bulk means that the superconducting specimens were well grown in the form of single grains.

  • Local probe techniques such as scanning probe microscopy (SPM) or atomic force microscopy (AFM) extended our perception into ultra small world. Specially, the sense of touching was extended by AFM into the micro- and nanoworld and has provided complementary new insights of the microscopic world. In addition, touching objects is an essential step before trying to manipulate things. SPM as a touch sensor not only measure the mechanical properties but also detect different properties such as magnetic, electrical, ionic, thermal, chemical and biophysical properties in nanoscale and even less. Obtaining biophysical measurements, monitoring dynamics and processes together with high-resolution imaging of the biomolecules and cells with rather simpler sample preparation than any other techniques give great attractions to the scientists experimenting with biological samples. Among the many AFM capabilities we will specifically introduce the force plot which is used to measure tip-sample interactions and its application this time.

  • In this study experiments are conducted with a mid-layer type structure. This structure can operate not only at water surface but also in water. Six degrees of freedom oscillations of the structure and mooring force were measured by model experiments. From these experiments, it was shown that the lattice model has two peaks in the surge response curve and the oscillation amplitude and mooring forces increase according to the distance of separation between water level and upper deck.

  • Condenser lens and objective lens are used to demagnify the image of the crossover to the final spot size. In lens, electrons are focused by magnetic fields. This fields is fringing field. It is important in electron focusing. Electron focusing occurs the radial component field and axial component field. Radial component produces rotational force and axial component produces radial force. Radial force causes the electron's trajectory to curve toward the optic axis and corss it. Focal length decreases as the current of lens increases. In this paper, we use the focal length for desiging the hardware of lens current control and present the results.

  • Locations of silicon accumulation in rice leaves and its possible association with resistance to rice blast were investigated by analytical electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. A blast-susceptible cultivar, Jinmi, and partially resistant cultivars, Hwaseong and Suwon345, were grown under a hydroponic culture system with modified Yoshida's nutrient solution. Electron-dense silicon layers were frequently found beneath the cuticle in epidermal cell walls of silicon-treated plants. Increasing levels of silicon were detected in the outer regions of epidermal cell walls. Silicon was present mainly in epidermal cell walls, middle lamella, and Intercellular spaces within subepidermal tissues. Furthermore, silicon was prevalent throughout the leaf surface with relatively small deposition on stomatal guard cells in silicon-treated plants. Force-distance curve measurements revealed relative hardness and smaller adhesion force in silicon-treated plants (18.65 uN) than control plants (28.39 uN). Moreover, force modulation microscopy showed higher mean height values of elastic Images In silicon-treated plants(1.26 V) than in control plants (0.44 V), implying the increased leaf hardness by silicon treatment. These results strongly suggest that silicon-induced cell wall fortification of rice leaves may be closely associated with enhanced host resistance to blast.

  • Highly conductive oxide films of BaRuO$_3$ have been grown heteroepitaxially on (100) LaAlO$_3$ single crystalline substrates by using pulsed laser deposition. The films are c-axis oriented with an in-plane epitaxial relationship of <010><100>BaRuO$_3$ // <110>LaAlO$_3$. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) observation shows that they consist of a fine-arranged network of grains and have a mosaic microstructure. Generally temperature-dependent resistivity shows the transition from metallic curve to semiconductor-metallic twofold curve by the deposition conditions for Ru oxide based materials like SrRuO$_3$, CaRuO$_3$, BaRuO$_3$, etc.. This twofold curve comes from the structural similarity of Ru oxide based materials including BaRuO$_3$. We find that the distance of Ru-Ru bonding in the unit cell of BaRuO$_3$ as well as the grain boundary scattering could be the two important causes of these interesting conductive properties.

  • The tribological properties and van der Waals attractive forces and the thermal stability of films are very important characteristics of highly hydrophobic fluorocarbon (FC) films for the long-term reliability of nano system. The effect of thermal annealing on films and van der Waals attractive forces and friction coefficient of films have been investigate d in this study. It was coated Al wafer which was treated O2 and Ar that ocatfluorocyclobutane ($C_4_{8}$) and Ar were supplied to the CVD chamber in the ratio of 2:3 for deposition of FC Films. Static contact angle and dynamic contact angle were used to characterize FC films. Thickness of films was measured by variable angle spectroscopy ellipsometer (VASE). Nanotribological data was got by atomic force microscopy (AFM) to measure roughness, lateral force microscopy (LFM) to measure friction force, and force vs. distance (FD) curve to evaluate adhesion force. FC films were cured in N2 and vacuum. The film showed the slight changes in its properties after 3 hr annealing. FTIR ATR studies showed the decrease of C-F peak intensity in the spectra as the annealing time increased. A significant decrease of film thickness has been observed. The friction force of Al surface was at least thirty times higher than ones with FC films. The adhesive force of bare Al was greater than 100 nN. After deposit FC films adhesive force was decreased to 40 nN. The adhesive force of films was decreased down to 10 nN after 24 hr annealing. During 24 hr annealing in $N_2$and vacuum at $100^{\circ}C$ film properties were not changed so much.

  • Instrumental and sensory characteristics of chewing gums were measured at each masticatory stage, and the correlations between the characteristics were analyzed. In instrumental characteristics, similarities were proved between initial puncture work and puncture force, intermediate hardness and penetration work, final hardness and penetration work, and adhesion work and adhesion force. Final hardness correlated highly with yield force and the slope of force-distance curve of penetration test, and the slope also correlated significantly with springiness and adhesion force. In sensory characteristics, the correlations of the same parameter between trained panel and consumer were extremely high. Initial stiffness correlated significantly with both intermediate and final firmness by consumer. Highly significant correlations were obtained between final firmness and stiffness and between lift and cohesion by trained panel, whereas firmness correlated with adhesion negatively.

  • Numerical study using nonlinear finite element analysis is done for investigating behavior of isolated reinforced concrete walls subject to combined in-plane and out-of-plane bending moments and axial force. A method for estimating the ultimate strength of wall is developed, based on the analytical results. For the nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities is developed. An existing unified method combining plasticity theory and damage model is used for material model of reinforced concrete. By numerical studies, the internal force distribution in the cross section is idealized, and a new method for estimating the ultimate strength of wall is developed. According to the proposed method, variation of the interaction curve of in-plane bending moment and axial force depends on the range of the permissible axial force per unit length that is determined by the given amount of out-of-plane bending moment. As the out-of-plane bending moment increases, the interaction curve shrinks, which indicates a decrease in the ultimate strength. The proposed method is compared with an existing method using the general assumption that strain shall be directly proportional to the distance from the neutral axis. Compared with the proposed method, the existing method overestimates the ultimate strength for walls subject to low out-of-plane bending moments, and it underestimates the ultimate strength for walls subject to high out-of-plane bending moments.
