Characterization and modeling of a self-sensing MR damper under harmonic loading

  • A self-sensing magnetorheological (MR) damper with embedded piezoelectric force sensor has recently been devised to facilitate real-time close-looped control of structural vibration in a simple and reliable manner. The development and characterization of the self-sensing MR damper are presented based on experimental work, which demonstrates its reliable force sensing and controllable damping capabilities. With the use of experimental data acquired under harmonic loading, a nonparametric dynamic model is formulated to portray the nonlinear behaviors of the self-sensing MR damper based on NARX modeling and neural network techniques. The Bayesian regularization is adopted in the network training procedure to eschew overfitting problem and enhance generalization. Verification results indicate that the developed NARX network model accurately describes the forward dynamics of the self-sensing MR damper and has superior prediction performance and generalization capability over a Bouc-Wen parametric model.

Haptic Interaction with Objects Displayed in a Picture based on Surface Normal Estimation (사진 속 피사체의 법선 벡터 예측에 기반한 햅틱 상호 작용)

  • In this paper we propose a haptic interaction system that physically represents the underlying geometry of objects displayed in a 2D picture, i.e., a digital image. To obtain the object's geometry displayed in the picture, we estimate the physical transformation between the object plane and the image plane based on homographic information. We then calculate the rotated surface normal vector of the object's face and place it on the corresponding part in the 2D image. The purpose of this setup is to create a force that can be rendered along with the image without distorting the visual information. We evaluated the proposed haptic rendering system using a set of pictures of objects with different orientations. The experimental results show that the participants reliably identified the geometric configuration by touching the object in the picture. We conclude this paper with a set of applications.

  • In this paper, we constructed the infrastructure with wireless LAN and Access Point in the indoor environment and implemented the teleoperation. Wireless LAN based teleoperation system is irregular communication delay according to environment condition and occurrence possibility of blackout is very high. In this paper, In case these problem happened, we measured communication delay time by real time, and did mobile robot to control harmoniously through vision and force reflection information. Also, we present obstacle-avoidance mode that mobile robot can travel without collision using direction information in case communication delay time is large. We proved usefulness of presented algorithm through teleoperation experiment to apply presented algorithm.

  • In this paper, a new collision avoidance algorithm based on the dynamic model of a mobile robot is proposed. In order to avoid obstacles on the path of a mobile robot, intelligent force control is used to regulate accurate distance between a robot and an obstacle. Since uncertainties from robot and environment dynamics degrade the performance of a collision avoidance task, neural network is used to compensate for uncertainties so that the collision avoidance can be performed intelligently. Simulation studies are conducted to confirm the proposed collision avoidance tracking control algorithm.

  • This paper deals with the inertia property-based redundancy resolution in posture control of a mobile manipulator. As a measure for the redundancy resolution of a mobile manipulator, an effective inertia at the end effector in the operational space is proposed and investigated. The reduced effective inertia has a significant effect on reducing the impulse force in collision with environment. To find a posture satisfying both the reduced inertia and joint limit constraints, we propose a combined potential function method that can deal with multiple constraints.   • This paper presents a motion coordination of two robot manipulators coordinating an object. To coordinate the object, a force/position control scheme in a mode of leaer/follower is devised. The dynamics of the object are incorporated into the dynamics of the leader arm, which yields a reduced order model of two arm system. In order to regulate interaction forces between two arm, the dynamics of the follower arm are expressed as force dynamic equations such that a novel direct forces between two arms and two different type of bounded input disturbances, boundedness and asymptotic stability results based on a proposed Lyapunov function are shown. Also, a sufficient condition for a stability robustness is derived based on the Lyapunov approach.

Analysis of Electromotive Force Characteristics for Electromagnetic Energy Harvester using Ferrofluid

  • This paper investigates the concept and implementation of an energy harvesting device using a ferrofluid sloshing movement to generate an electromotive force (EMF). Ferrofluids are often applied to energy harvesting devices because they have both magnetic properties and fluidity, and they behave similarly to a soft ferromagnetic substance. In addition, a ferrofluid can change its shape freely and generate an EMF from small vibrations. The existing energy harvesting techniques, for example those using piezoelectric and thermoelectric devices, generate minimal electric power, as low as a few micro-watts. Through flow analysis of ferrofluids and examination of the magnetic circuit characteristics of the resultant electromagnetic system, an energy harvester model based on an electromagnetic field generated by a ferrofluid is developed and proposed. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is demonstrated and its EMF characteristics are discussed based on experimental data.

  • This paper Presents active control algorithm using probability density function of structural energy. It is assumed that the structural energy under excitation has Rayleigh probability distribution. This assumption is based on the fact that Rayleigh distribution satisfies the condition that the structural energy is always positive and the occurrence probability of minimum energy is zero. The magnitude of control force is determined by the probability that the structural energy exceeds the specified target critical energy, and the sign of control force is determined by Lyapunov controller design method. Proposed control algorithm shows much reduction of peak responses under seismic excitation compared to LQR controller, and it can consider control force limit in the controller design. Also, chattering problem which sometimes occurs in Lyapunov controller can be avoided.

  • An axial electromagnetic levitation system using attractive force is a highly nonlinear system due to the nonlinearity of materials, variable air gap and flux density. To control the levitating system with large air gap, a conventional PID control based on the linear model is not satisfactory to obtain the desired performance and the position tracking control of the sinusoidal motion by simulation results. Thus, sliding mode control(SMC) based on the input-output linearization is suggested and evaluated by simulation and experimental approaches. Usefulness of the SMC to this system is conformed experimentally. If the expected variation of added mass can be included in the gain conditions and the model, the position control performance of the electromagnetic levitation system with large air gap will be improved with robustness.

  • This paper presents shift characteristics of a dual clutch transmission(DCT). To obtain the shift force, dynamic models of the DCT are constructed by using MATLAB/Simulink and considering the rotational inertia of every component and the target pre-select time. Dynamic models of the shift and clutch actuators are derived based on the experimental results of the dynamic characteristics test. Based on the dynamic model of the DCT synchronizer, control actuator and vehicle model, a DCT vehicle performance simulator is developed. Using the simulator, the shift force and speed of the relevant shafts are obtained. In addition, the torque and acceleration of actuators are calculated during the shift process by considering the engaging and disengaging dynamics of the two clutches. It is observed from the performance simulator that uninterrupted torque can be transmitted by proper control of the two clutches.
