Applying force-distance curve measurement by atomic force microscopy to a theoretical mechanical model gives us elastic properties of polymer surfaces. Our group focuses on force-mapping method, in which force-distance curve is performed at each lattice point on a sample surface and subsequently a variety of properties derived from analytical results are combined to construct a 2-dimensional image. With this method we succeeded in deriving Young' s modulus distribution map method of rubbery/rubbery polymer blend surfaces with ${\sim}100\;nm$ lateral resolution. We also applied force-mapping method to another theory to divide distribution of hardness from that of adhesion. We will demonstrate recent progress.
A bushing is a device used in automotive suspension systems to cushion the force transmitted from the wheel to the frame of the vehicle. A bushing is essentially a hollow cylinder which is bonded to a solid metal shaft at its inner surface and a metal sleeve at its outer surface. The shaft is connected to the suspension and the sleeve is connected to the frame. The cylinder provides the cushion when it deforms due to relative motion between the shaft and sleeve. The relation between the force applied to the shaft or sleeve and its deformation is nonlinear and exhibits features of viscoelasticity. An explicit force-displacement relation has been introduced for multi-body dynamics simulations. The relation is expressed in terms of a force relaxation function and a method of determination by experiments on bushings has been developed. Solutions allow for comparison between the force-displacement behavior by experiments and that predicted by the proposed method. It is shown that the predictions by the proposed force-displacement relation are in very good agreement with the experimental results.

Force balance method is employed to predict forging information such as forging load, tool pressure and normal stress at the surface of tangential velocity discontinuity. The incipient stages of deformation for the plane strain forging of rectangular billets in V-shaped dies of different semi-angles are analysed. To construct an approximate model for the analysis of deformation by the force balance method in the incipient deformation stages, slip-line field is used. When the deformation mode by slip-line method is the same as that by force balance method, the slip-line method and the force balance method give identical solutions. The effects of die angle, coefficient of friction, billet geometries and deforma- tion characteristics are also investigated. In order to verify the validity of force balance analysis, the rigid-plastic finite element simulation for the various forgig parameters are performed and performed and find to be in good agreement.

This paper discusses applicability of the enhanced reference stress method to estimate J-integral along the semi-elliptical surface crack front. It is found that angular variations of normalized Jintegral are strongly dependent on the geometry, loading mode and loading magnitude. As application of the reference stress approach to semi-elliptical surface cracks implies proportional increases in the normalized J-integral, the present results pose a question in applicability of the reference stress approach. However, investigation of the error in the estimated J-integral in the present work suggests that the enhanced reference stress approach, recently proposed by authors, provides an effective engineering tool fur estimating crack driving force along the semi-elliptical surface crack front.
Thin films of $Pb(Zr_xTi_{1-x})O_3$)PZT) were grown on $Pt/SiO_2/Si(100)$ at various temperatures by RF magnetron sputtering method. Surface morphology of these films were studied by using Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM). These films were also analyzed by using Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM). These films were also analyzed by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy(XPS) for determining their chemical composition and their depth profile. It was found that the films grown at the substrated temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ have much more smooth surface characteristics in comparison to those films grown at room temperature, which may be explained in terms of surface mobility of ad-atoms such as Pb. It was also found that Pb enrichment in the near surface region enhanced for the films grown at higher substate temperature.
Most automobile tire companies have not yet considered the geometric information of a road at the design stage of a tire because the topographical characterization of a road surface is very difficult owing to its vastness and randomness. A road surface shows variable surface roughness values according to magnification, and thus, the contact force between the road and tire significantly fluctuates with respect to the scale. In this study, we make an attempt to define a representative value for surface topographical information at multi-scale levels. To represent surface topography, we use a statistical method called power spectral density (PSD). We use the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and PSD to analyze the height profiles of a random surface. The FFT and PSD of a surface help in obtaining a fractal dimension, which is a representative value of surface topography at all length scales. We develop three surfaces with different fractal dimensions. We use finite element analysis (FEA) to observe the contact forces between a tire and the road surfaces with three different fractal dimensions. The results from FEA reveal that an increase in the fractal dimension decreases the contact length between the tire and road surfaces. On the contrary, the average contact force increases. This result indicates that designing and manufacturing a tire considering the fractal dimension of a road makes safe driving possible, owing to the improvement in service life and braking performance of the tire.
Adhesion phenomenon is more significant for smaller objects, because adhesional force is proportional to size of the objects while gravitational force is proportional to the third power of it. For the purpose of microassembly, theoretical understanding is required for the Adhesion phenomenon. Authors have developed a force measurement system in an ultra-high vacuum chamber of Auger electron spectroscopy. The force between arbitrary combination of materials can be measured at a pressure less than 100 nPa after and before Ar ion sputtering and chemical analysis for several atomic layers of the surface. The results are successfully interpreted with a theory of contact mechanics. Since surface energy is quite important in the interpretation, electronic theory is used to evaluate the surface energy. In the manipulation of small objects, the adhesional force is always attractive. Repulsive force is essential for the manipulation. It can be generated by Coulomb interaction. The voltage required for detachment is theoretically analyzed and the effect of boundary conditions on the detachment is obtained. The possibility and limitations of micro-manipulation using both the adhesion phenomenon and Coulomb interaction are theoretically clarified. Its applicability to nano-technology is found to be expected.

The demand for Ru has been increasing in the electronic, chemical and semiconductor industry. Chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) is one of the fabrication processes for electrode formation and barrier layer removal. The abrasive particles can be easily contaminated on the top surface during the CMP process. This can induce adverse effects on subsequent patterning and film deposition processes. In this study, a post Ru CMP cleaning solution was formulated by using sodium periodate as an etchant and citric acid to modify the zeta potential of alumina particles and Ru surfaces. Ru film (150 nm thickness) was deposited on tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) films by the atomic layer deposition method. Ru wafers were cut into $2.0{\times}2.0$ cm pieces for the surface analysis and used for estimating PRE. A laser zeta potential analyzer (LEZA-600, Otsuka Electronics Co., Japan) was used to obtain the zeta potentials of alumina particles and the Ru surface. A contact angle analyzer (Phoenix 300, SEO, Korea) was used to measure the contact angle of the Ru surface. The adhesion force between an alumina particle and Ru wafer surface was measured by an atomic force microscope (AFM, XE-100, Park Systems, Korea). In a solution with citric acid, the zeta potential of the alumina surface was changed to a negative value due to the adsorption of negative citrate ions. However, the hydrous Ru oxide, which has positive surface charge, could be formed on Ru surface in citric acid solution at pH 6 and 8. At pH 6 and 8, relatively low particle removal efficiency was observed in citric acid solution due to the attractive force between the Ru surface and particles. At pH 10, the lowest adhesion force and highest cleaning efficiency were measured due to the repulsive force between the contaminated alumina particle and the Ru surface. The highest PRE was achieved in citric acid solution with NaIO4 below 0.01 M at pH 10.
Effect of Surface roughness on nanoscale adhesion was studied experimentally by using colloidal probe technique. Glass micro balls having the radius of $3.3\~17.4{\mu}m$ were glued at the end of AFM cantilevers to prepare colloidal probes. Adhesion force between the colloidal probe and Si-wafer was measured using pull-off force measuring method. Results showed that the measured adhesion forces are not the function of the radius of the glued balls because the ball surfaces are rough. It is also found that roughness parameters such as $R_a,\;R_q\;and\;R_{max}$ do not have important role on nanoscale adhesion. In order to find the effect of surface roughness on nanoscale adhesion, the bearing areas were extracted from the measured topography of glued balls. After normalizing the measured adhesion force with the bearing area, it was found that the normalized adhesion force kept constant as function of the radius of glued ball.

Cutting forces in ball-end milling of slanted surfaces are calculated. The cutting area is determined from the Z-map of the surface geometry and current cutter location. The obtained cutting area is projected onto the cutter plane normal to the Z-axis and compared with cutting edge element location. Cutting force is calculated by integration of elemental cutting forces of engaged cutting edge elements. Experiments with various slanted angles were performed to verify the proposed cutting force estimation model. It is shown that the proposed method predicts cutting force effectively for any geometry including sculptured surfaces with cusp marks and surfaces with pockets and holes.
