This describes the formulation for the free vibration of joined conical-cylindrical shells with uniform thickness using the transfer of influence coefficient. This method was developed based on successive transmission of dynamic influence coefficients, which were defined as the relationships between the displacement and the force vectors at arbitrary nodal circles of the system. The two edges of the shell having arbitrary boundary conditions are supported by several elastic springs with meridional/axial, circumferential, radial and rotational stiffness, respectively. The governing equations of vibration of a conical shell, including a cylindrical shell, are written as a coupled set of first order differential equations by using the transfer matrix of the shell. Once the transfer matrix of a single component has been determined, the entire structure matrix is obtained by the product of each component matrix and the joining matrix. The natural frequencies and the modes of vibration were calculated numerically for joined conical-cylindrical shells. The validity of the present method is demonstrated through simple numerical examples, and through comparison with the results of previous researchers.
A semi-active algorithm for edgewise vibration control of the spar-type floating offshore wind turbine (SFOWT) blades, nacelle and spar platform is developed in this paper. A tuned mass damper (TMD) is placed in each blade, in the nacelle and on the spar to control the vibrations for these components. A Short Time Fourier Transform algorithm is used for semi-active control of the TMDs. The mathematical formulation of the integrated SFOWT-TMDs system is derived by using Euler-Lagrangian equations. The theoretical model derived is a time-varying system considering the aerodynamic properties of the blade, variable mass and stiffness per unit length, gravity, the interactions among the blades, nacelle, spar, mooring system and the TMDs, the hydrodynamic effects, the restoring moment and the buoyancy force. The aerodynamic loads on the nacelle and the spar due to their coupling with the blades are also considered. The effectiveness of the semi-active TMDs is investigated in the numerical examples where the mooring cable tension, rotor speed and the blade stiffness are varying over time. Except for excessively large strokes of the nacelle TMD, the semi-active algorithm is considerably more effective than the passive one in all cases and its effectiveness is restricted by the low-frequency nature of the nacelle and the spar responses.
The objective of this work is to develop a new design method to find optimal coils, especially the optimal coil configuration of an optical pickup actuator. In designing actuator coils, the developed Lorenz force in the coils along the desired direction should be made as large as possible while forces and torques in other directions should be made as small as possible. The design methodology we are developing is a systematic approach that can generate optimal coil configurations for given permanent magnet configurations. To consider the best coil configuration among all feasible coil configurations, we formulate the design problem as a topology optimization of a coil. The present formulation for coil design is noble in the sense that the existing topology optimization is mainly concerned with the design of yokes and permanent magnets and that the optimization of actuator coils is so far limited within shape or size optimization. Though the present design methodology applies to any problem, the specific design example considered is the design of fine-pattern tracking and focusing coils.
In this paper, a new iterative method for solving vehicle-bridge interaction problems is proposed. Iterative methods have advantages over the non-iterative methods in that it is not necessary to update the system matrix for a given wheel location, and the method can be applied for a new type of car or bridge with few or no modifications. In the proposed method, the necessity of system matrices update is eliminated using the equivalent interaction force acting on the bridge, which is obtained iteratively. Ballast stiffness is included in the interaction forces and the geometric compatibility at the contact points are used as convergence criteria. The bridge is considered as an elastic Bernoulli-Euler beam with surface irregularity and ballast stiffness. The moving vehicle is modeled as a multi-axle mass-spring-damper system having many degrees of freedom depending on the number of axles. The pitching effect, which is the interaction effect between the rear and front wheels when a vehicle begins to enter or leave the bridge, is also considered in the formulation including extended ground boundaries having surface irregularity and ballast stiffness. The applicability of the proposed method is illustrated in the numerical studies.

Expeller pressed and solvent extracted palm kernel cake (PKC) were force-fed to male and female Muscovy ducks at 7 weeks of age. The nutrient digestibility, apparent metabolizable energy (AME), true metabolizable energy (TME) and true available amino acid (TAAA) digestibilities were determined. There was no significant (p>0.05) effect of the type of PKC used on crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), metabolizable energy (ME) and amino acid (AA) digestibilities. However, digestibilities of dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) was found to be higher in solvent extracted compared to expeller pressed PKC. The average digestibility of DM, CP, NDF and EE were 43, 58, 39 and 89%, espectively. It was found that the ducks utilized about 47% of the gross energy of PKC. The respective average AMEn and TMEn values of PKC for Muscovy ducks was 1,743 and 1,874 kcal/kg. The overall TAAA of PKC for Muscovy ducks was 65%. The data on the TMEn and digestible AA for PKC obtained from this study provide new information with regard to diet formulation for Muscovy ducks.
This paper is motivated by a military cargo-plane routing problem which is a pickup-and-delivery problem in which load splits and node revisits are allowed (PDPLS). Although this recent evolution of a VRP-model enhances the efficiency of routing, a solution method is more of a challenge since the node revisits entail closed walks in modeling vehicle routes. For such a case, even a compact IP-formulation is not available and an effective method had been lacking until Nowak et al. (2008b) proposed a heuristic based on a tabu search. Their method provides very reasonable solu-tions as demonstrated by the experiments not only in their paper (Nowak et al., 2008b) but also in ours. However, the computation time seems intensive especially for the class of problems with dynamic transportation requests, including the military cargo-plane routing problem. This paper proposes a more scalable algorithm hybridizing a tabu search for pricing subproblem paused as a single-vehicle routing problem, with a column generation approach based on Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition. As tested on a wide variety of instances, our algorithm produces, in average, a solution of an equiva-lent quality in 10~20% of the computation time of the previous method.
An analytical method for nautral frequencies of a partially liquid- filled circular cylindrical shell with various boundary conditions is developed by means of the Stokes's transformation and Fourier series expansion on the basis of Sanders' shell equation. The liquid-shell coupled system is divided into two regions for convenient formulation. One is the empty shell region in which the Sanders' shell equations are formulated without the lipuid effect, the other is wetted shell region in which the shell equations are formulated with consideration of the liquid dynamic effect. The shell equations for each regions are combined by the geometry and the force continuities at the junction of the two regions. For the vibration relevant to the liquid motion, the velocity potential of liquid is assumed as a sum of linear combination of suitable harmonic functions in axial direction. The unknown parameters are selected to satisfy the boundary condition along the wetted shell surface. The natural frequencies of the liquid filled cylindraical shells with the clamped- free and the clamped-clamped boundary conditions examined in the previous works, are obtained by this analytical method. The results are compared with the previous works, and excllent agreement is found for the natural frequencies of the shells.
In this paper, a unified solution method is presented for the classical beam theory. In Strength of Materials approach, the geometry, material properties and load system are known and related with the unknowns of forces, moments, slopes and deformations by applying a classical differential analysis in addition to equilibrium, constitutive, and kinematic laws. All these relations are expressed in a unified formulation for the classical beam theory. In the special case of simple beams, a system of four linear ordinary differential equations of first order represents the general mechanical behaviour of a straight beam. These equations are solved using the numerical differential quadrature method (DQM). The application of DQM has the advantages of mathematical consistency and conceptual simplicity. The numerical procedure is simple and gives clear understanding. This systematic way of obtaining influence line, bending moment, shear force diagrams and deformed shape for the beams with geometric and load discontinuities has been discussed in this paper. Buckling loads and natural frequencies of any beam prismatic or non-prismatic with any type of support conditions can be evaluated with ease.
The MEMS structures usually are made from silicon; consideration of the viscoelastic effect in microbeams duo to the phenomena of silicon creep is necessary. Application of the fractional model of microbeams made from viscoelastic materials is studied in this paper. Quasi-static and dynamical responses of an electrically actuated viscoelastic microbeam are investigated. For this purpose, a nonlinear finite element formulation of viscoelastic beams in combination with the fractional derivative constitutive equations is elucidated. The four-parameter fractional derivative model is used to describe the constitutive equations. The electric force acting on the microbeam is introduced and numerical methods for solving the nonlinear algebraic equation of quasi-static response and nonlinear equation of motion of dynamical response are described. The deflected configurations of a microbeam for different purely DC voltages and the tip displacement of the microbeam under a combined DC and AC voltages are presented. The validity of the present analysis is confirmed by comparing the results with those of the corresponding cases available in the literature.
This paper considers the smooth receding contact problem between a homogeneous half-plane and a composite laminate composed of an inhomogeneously coated elastic layer. The inhomogeneity of the elastic modulus of the coating is approximated by an exponential function along the thickness dimension. The three-component structure is pressed together by either a concentrated force or uniform pressures applied at the top surface of the composite laminate. Both semianalytical and finite element analysis are performed to solve for the extent of contact and the contact pressure. In the semianalytical formulation, Fourier integral transformation of governing equations and boundary conditions leads to a singular integral equation of Cauchy-type, which can be numerically integrated by Gauss-Chebyshev quadrature to a desired degree of accuracy. In the finite element modeling, the functionally graded coating is divided into homogeneous sublayers and the shear modulus of each sublayer is assigned at its lower boundary following the predefined exponential variation. In postprocessing, the stresses of any node belonging to sublayer interfaces are averaged over its surrounding elements. The results obtained from the semianalytical analysis are successfully validated against literature results and those of the finite element modeling. Extensive parametric studies suggest the practicability of optimizing the receding contact peak stress and the extent of contact in multilayered structures by the introduction of functionally graded coatings.
