  • An elbow orthosis with a pneumatic rubber actuator has been developed to assist and enhance upper limbs movements and has been examined for the effectiveness. The effectiveness of the elbow orthosis was examined by comparing muscular activities during alternate dumbbell curl motion wearing and not wearing the orthosis. The subjects participated in the experiment were younger adults in their twenties. The subjects were instructed to perform dumbbell curl motion in a sitting position wearing and not wearing orthosis in turn and a dynamometer was used to measure elbow joint torque outputs in an isokinetic mode. Orthosis was controlled using contractile muscle force that is measured from force sensor through cDAQ-9172 board. The air pressure of the pneumatic actuator was 0.3MPa the most suitable air pressure. For the analysis of muscular activities, Electromyography of the subjects was measured during alternate dumbbell curl motion. The experiment results showed that the muscular activities wearing the elbow orthosis were reduced. With this, we confirmed the effectiveness of the developed elbow orthosis.

  • This paper reports the active vibration control of plates using a positive position feedback(PPF) controller with moment pair actuators. The equations of motion of the plates under a force and moment pairs are derived and the equations of PPF controllers are formulated. The numerical active control system is then achieved. The effect of the parameters - gain and damping ratio - of the PPF controllers on the open loop transfer function was investigated mainly in terms of the system stability. Increasing the gain of the PPF controller tuned at a mode, the magnitude of the open loop transfer function is increased at all frequencies without changing the phase behavior. The increase of the damping ratio of the PPF controller leads to decrease the magnitude of the open loop transfer function and to modify its phase characteristics, ie, system stability. Based on the behavior of the gain and the damping ratio of the controller, PPF controller for reduction of the plate vibration can be achieved. Two PPF controllers are designed with their connection in parallel to control the two modes simultaneously. Each PPF controller is tuned at the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ modes, respectively. Their parameters were determined to remain the system to be stable based on the results of the parametric study. A significant reduction in vibration at the tuned modes can be obtained.

  • Many types of smart materials and control laws are available to actively adjust the structure from various external disturbances. Usually, a certain type of control laws to activate a specific smart material is well established, but the effectiveness of the control scheme is limited by the choice of the smart materials and the responses of the structure. ER fluid is adequate to provide relatively large control force, on the other hand, the PZT patches are suitable to provide small but arbitrary control forces at any point along the structure. It was found that active vibration control mechanism using ER fluid failed to suppress the excitation off the resonant frequency with changed structural characteristics along the frequency response function of the closed loop of the control system. To compensate this additional peak of the closed loop system, PPF control using PZT as an actuator is added to construct a hybrid controller.

  • In this research, a novel mater arm was studied as a teaching device for an underwater revolute robot arm used as a slave arm. The master arm was designed to be a seven-degree-of-freedom (DOF) structure, with a structure similar to that of the slave arm, and to be desktop size to allow it to be worn on a human arm. The master arm with encoders on the joints was used as an input device for teaching a slave robot arm. In addition, small electric magnets were installed at the joints of the master arm to generate the haptic force. A control system was designed to sense excessive force and torque in the joints of the master arm and protect it by controlling the position and velocity of the slave arm through the encoder signal of the master arm.

  • In general, atomic force microscope (AFM) used for metrological purpose has measuring range less than a few hundred micrometers. We design and fabricate an AFM with long measuring range of $200mm{\times}200mm$ in X and Y axes. The whole stage system is composed of surface plate, global stage, microstage. By combining global stage and microstage, the fine and long movement can be provided. We measure the position of the stage and angular motions of the stage by laser interferometer. A piezoresistive type cantilever is used for compact and long term stability and a flexure structure with PZT and capacitive sensor is used for Z axis feedback control. Since the system is composed of various actuators and sensors, a real time control program is required for the implementation of AFM. Therefore, in this work, we designed a multi-axis control program using a FPGA module, which has various functions such as interferometer signal converting, PID control and data acquisition with triggering. The control program achieves a loop rate more than 500 kHz and will be applied for the measurement of grating pitch and step height.

  • Because a robot actuator is directly affected by the external force of the robot and accounts for the largest portion of the robot system weight, developing an optimized actuator suitable for each characteristic of the robot system is essential. Although there have been many developments and studies related to robot actuators in various industrial fields, lightweight and compact actuator designs that can control force are still lacking. In this study, a novel actuator module was developed, and its performance was verified experimentally. The structure and control of various robot systems can be optimized by utilizing the proposed actuator. It can be used for various tasks by sensing external force and through feedback control.

  • Pendulums can be used as passive vibration control devices in several structures and machines. In the present work, the nonlinear behavior of a pendulum-tower system is studied. The tower is modeled as a bar with variable cross-section with concentrated masses. First, the vibration modes and frequencies of the tower are obtained analytically. The primary structure and absorber together constitute a coupled system which is discretized as a two degrees of freedom nonlinear system, using the normalized eigenfunctions and the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The analysis shows the influence of the geometric nonlinearity of the pendulum absorber on the response of the tower. A parametric analysis also shows that, with an appropriate choice of the absorber parameters, a pendulum can decrease the vibration amplitudes of the tower in the main resonance region. The results also show that the pendulum nonlinearity cannot be neglected in this type of problem, leading to multiplicity of solutions, dynamic jumps and instability. In order to improve the effectiveness of the control during the transient response, a hybrid control system is suggested. The added control force is implemented as a non-linear variable stiffness device based on position and velocity feedback. The obtained results show that this strategy of nonlinear control is attractive, has a good potential and can be used to minimize the response of slender structures under various types of excitation.

  • Generally. most of the physical systems affected by disturbance or incomplete knowledge are complex and highly nonlinear. To control under these circumstances. many researches are ongoing in modern control theory recently. But the researches need apparatuses. which can verify the controller for being not damaged the real plant. In this paper. therefore. a seesaw system is considered control system to analyze and apply the control theory. A seesaw system consists of a moving cart on the rail and seesaw frame made to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control theory. The system has balancing and positioning problems. and the driving force is applied on the DC motor of cart. but not on the pivot. The purpose of control is to maintain an equilibrium of seesaw frame in spite of an allowable disturbance. Computer simulations are given to illustrate the control performance of the proposed scheme.

  • The piezoelectric actuating device is known for its large power density and simple structure. It can generate a larger force than a conventional actuator and has also wide bandwidth with fast response in a compact size. To control the piezoelectric actuator, we need an analog signal conditioning circuit as well as digital microcontrollers. Conventional microcontrollers are not equipped with an analog part and need digital-to-analog converters, which makes the system bulky compared with the small size of piezoelectric devices. To overcome these weaknesses, we are developing a single-chip controller that can handle analog and digital signals simultaneously using mixed-signal FPGA technology. This gives more flexibility than traditional fixed-function microcontrollers, and the control speed can be increased greatly due to the parallel processing characteristics of the FPGA. In this paper, we developed a floating-point multiplier, PWM generator, 80-kHz power control loop, and 1-kHz position feedback control loop using a single mixed-signal FPGA. It takes only 50 ns for single floating-point multiplication. The PWM generator gives two outputs to control the charging and discharging of the high-voltage output capacitor. Through experimentation and simulation, it is demonstrated that the designed control loops work properly in a real environment.

  • In this study, active control system using sliding mode control method is presented to achieve the gust response alleviation of a three-dimensional flexible wing model. For this purpose, aeroservoelastic model which is composed of aeroelastic plant, control surface actuator model, and gust model depicting the atmospheric turbulence is formulated in the state space. The aerodynamic force generated by the motion of a trailing edge control surface of a flexible wing is made use of as control means. An active control system combining state feedback sliding mode controller and state estimator based on measured responses such as wing tip acceleration and wing root strain is designed for gust response alleviation of a flexible wing aeroservoelastic model. The performance of the controller designed is demonstrated via numerical simulation for the representative flexible wing model under gust loading conditions.
