In this paper, the design of a novel 6-axis compliance device with force/torque sensing capability and the experiment results on force measurement are presented. Unlike the traditional control methods using a force/torque sensor with very limited compliance, the force control method employs a compliant device to provide sufficient compliance between an industrial robot and a rigid environment for more stable force control. The proposed compliance device is designed to have a diagonal stiffness matrix at the tip and uses strain gauge measurement which is robust to dust and oil. The measurement circuit is designed with low-cost IC chips however the force resolution is 0.04N.
This paper presents an adaptive cutting force controller for milling process, which can be attached to most commercial CNC machining centers in a practical way. The cutting forces of X,Y and Z axes measured indirectly from the use of currents drawn by AC feed-drive servo motors. A typical model for the feed-drive control system of a horizontal machining center is developed to analyze cutting force measurement from the drive motor. The pulsating milling forces can be measured indirectly within the bandwidth of the current feedback control loop of the feed-drive system. It is shown that indirectly measured cutting force signals can be used in the adaptive controller for cutting force regulation. The robust controller structure is adopted in the whole adaptive control scheme. The conditions under which the whole scheme is globally convergent and stable are presented. The suggested control scheme has been implemented into a commercial machining center, and a series of cutting experiments on end milling and face milling processes are performed. The adaptive controller reveals reliable cutting force regulating capability under various cutting conditions.

This paper deals with a hybrid position/force control of a robot which is moving on the constrained object with constant force. The proposed controller is composed of a position and force controller. The position controller has a nonlinear compensator which is based on the dynamic robot model and the force controller is attached by feedforward element. A direct drive robot with hard nonlinearity which is controlled by the proposed algorithm has moved on the constrained object with a high stiffness and low stiffness. The results show that the proposed controller has more vibration suppression effects which is occurred to the constrained object with a high stiffness, than a existing feedback controller, and accurate force control can be obtained by comparatively a small feedback gain.

In this paper, magneto-rheological(MR) damper is studied for vibration control of large infra structures under earthquake. Generally, active control devices need a large control force and a high power supply system to reduce the vibration effectively. Large and miss tuned control force may induce the dangerous situation such that the generated large control force acts to amplify the structural vibration. Recently, to overcome the weaknesses of the active control, the semi-active control method is suggested by many researchers. Semi-active control uses the passive control device of which the characteristics can be modified. Control force of the semi-active device is not generated from the actuator with power supply. It is generated as a dynamic reaction force of the device same as in the passive control case, so the control system is inherently stable and robust. Unlike the case of passive control, control force of semi-active control is adjusted depending on the measured response of the structure, so the vibration can be reduced more effectively against various unknown environmental loads. Magneto-rheological(MR) damper is one of the semi-active devices. Dynamic characteristics of the MR material can be changed by applying the magnetic fields. So the control of MR damper needs only small power. Response time of MR to the input voltage is very short, so the high performance control is possible. MR damper has a high force capacity so it is adequate to the vibration control of large infra structure. Because MR damper has a nonlinear property, normal control method used in active control may not be effective. Clipped optimal control, modified bang-bang control etc. have been suggested to MR damper by many researchers. In this study, sliding mode fuzzy control(SMFC) is applied to MR damper. Genetic algorithm is used for the controller tuning. To verify the applicability of MR damper and suggested algorithm, numerical simulation on the aseismic control is carried out. Simulation model is three-story building structure, which was used in the paper of Dyke, et al. The control performance is compared with clipped optimal control. The present results indicate that the SMFC algorithm can reduce the earthquake-induced vibration very effectively.
A dynamic load simulator which can reproduce on-ground the hinge moment of aircraft control surface is and essential rig for the loaded performance test of aircraft test of aircraft acutation system. The hinge moment varies wide in the aricraft flight enveloped depending on specific flight condition and maneuvering status. To replicate the wide spectrum of this hinge moment variation within some accuracy bounds, a force controller is designed based on the Quantiative Feedback Theory (AFT). Through the analysis on hinge moment dynamics, a design specification for the force controller is suggested. The efficacy of QFT force controller is verivied by simulation, in which combined aricraft dynamics/flight control law and hydraulic actuation system dynamics of aircraft control surface are considered.

This paper presents the position-based force control application of a mobile manipulator. The mobile manipulator consists of two six DOF manipulators and a mobile robot. Kinematics of the robot is analyzed and simulated to validate the analysis. A position-based force control technique is applied to the robot by adding an outer loop to interact with the environment. Experimental studies of force control applications of robot arm and interaction with a human operator are conducted. Experimental results show that the robot arm is well regulated to follow the desired force.

In this paper, active control of vibrational intensity at a reference point in an infinite, elastic plate was discussed. The plate is excised harmonically by a vibrating source, which has a vertical point force. The optimal condition of controller was investigated to minimize the vibrational intensity being transmitted from the vibrating source to a reference point. Hence the method of feedforward control was employed for the control strategy and then the cost function was evaluated to find the optimal control force. Three types of control force (Vertical force, Moment, and Coupling force (a set of vertical force and moment) ) and controller's positions were examined to define the optimal condition of the controller. The vibrational intensity at a reference point was found to be reduced down to a zero level, compared with the uncontrolled case. Especially maximum reduction of vibrational intensity was achieved when the controller was collinearly positioned between a vibrating source and a reference point.

In displaying a virtual wall using a passive haptic device equipped with passive actuators such as electric brakes, unsmooth motion frequently occurs. This undesirable behavior is attributed to time delay due to slowness in the virtual environment update and force approximation due to the inability of a brake to generate torque in arbitrary directions. In this paper a new control scheme called direct control is proposed to achieve smooth display on the wall-following task with a passive haptic device. In direct control, brakes are controlled so that the normal component of a resultant force at the end-effector vanishes, based on the force analysis at the end-effector of the passive haptic device using the passive FME (Force Manipulability Ellipsoid). Various experiments have been conducted to verify the validity of the direct control scheme with a 2-link passive haptic system.

This paper describes the design of a two-axis force sensor for robots finger. In detects the x-direction force Fx and y-direction force Fy simultaneously. In order to safely grasp an unknown object using the robots fingers, they should detect the force or gripping direction and the force of gravity direction, and perform the force control using the forces detected. Therefore, the robots hand should be made by the robots finger with tow-axis force sensor that can detect the x-direction force and y-direction force si-multaneously. Thus, in this paper, the two-axis force sensor for robots finger is designed using several parallel-plate beams. The equations to calculate the strain of the beams according to the force in order to design the sensing element of the force sensor are derived and these equations are used to design the aize of two-axis force sensor sensing element. The reliability of the derive equa-tions is verified buy performing a finite element analysis of the sensing element. The strain obtained through this process is compared to that obtained through the theory analysis and a characteristics test of the fabricated sensor. It reveals that the rated strains calculated from the derive equations make a good agreement with the results from the Finite Element Method analysis and from the character-istic test.
In this paper, a force estimation method is proposed for the sensorless force control. For this, a disturbance observer is applied to each joint of an n degrees of freedom manipulator to obtain a simple equivalent robot dynamics(SERD) being represented as an n independent double integrator system. To estimate the output of disturbance observer in the absence of external force, the observer estimator is designed, where the uncertain parameters of the robot manipulator are adjusted by gradient method to minimize the output between the disturbance observer and the observer estimator. When the external force is exerted, the external force is estimated using the difference between the output of disturbance observer which include the external torque signal and that of observer estimator. And then, a force controller is designed for force feedback control employing the estimated force signal. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed force estimation method, several numerical examples are illustrated for the 2-axis planar type robot manipulator.
