Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Hangul font on reading speed when texts are displayed on the computer screen. Background: Reading performance is influenced by fonts. However, there are few studies of Hangul font from a cognitive perspective. Fonts could affect reading performance directly and indirectly, interacting with other visual-perceptual factors such as size, word spacing, and line spacing. Method: In experiment 1, two variables were manipulated; a frame condition(square frame non-square frame) and a stroke condition(serif sans-serif). According to each condition, one of the four fonts was applied to the texts. The height of the four fonts was controlled. The participants were asked to read aloud the presented texts. In experiment 2, the non-square frame fonts were adjusted to have approximately the same size, width, letter spacing, and word spacing as the square frame fonts. The experimental design and task used in experiment 2 were identical with experiment 1. Results: In general, reading speed was faster in the square frame fonts than in the non-square frame fonts. The reading speed was not significantly different across stroke conditions. Conclusion: The frame of Hangul font significantly influenced reading speed. These results suggest that the type of Hangul font is a factor to affect reading performance. Application: The frame of fonts should be considered in designing of new fonts. The square frame fonts should be the preferred choice to enhance legibility.

As various styles of fonts were used, there were problems such as output errors due to uninstalled fonts and difficulty in font recognition. To solve these problems, research on font recognition and recommendation were actively conducted. However, Hangul font research remains at the basic level. Therefore, in order to automate the comparison on Hangul font similarity in the future, we analyze the influence of each stroke element property. First, we select seven representative properties based on Hangul stroke shape elements. Second, we design a calculation model to compare similarity between fonts. Third, we analyze the effect of each stroke element through the cosine similarity between the user's evaluation and the results of the model. As a result, there was no significant difference in the individual effect of each representative property. Also, the more accurate similarity comparison was possible when many representative properties were used.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine a suitable type and size of Hangul fonts for printed materials in the presbyopic age. Methods: Based on the most common Hangul fonts used today, three types of fonts were used Hamchrombatang, Sinmoonmyungjo and Sinmyungjo at small font sizes in the range 9-11 point (pt). Subjects were 101 volunteers aged 41 through 85 years. Near visual acuity (VA) was corrected to read VA 0.5 at 40 cm after distance correction. The subjects were asked to read words containing 88 characters in 10 pt after a question about preference. Readability was assessed by reading rate that was calculated as the number of words read correctly in one minute (words per minute, wpm). Results: The most preferred font type was Simmyungjo at small font sizes. Although preferred font sizes were different in each font type, Sinmyungjo was generally preferred at 10 pt more than other fonts. Hamchrombatang and Sinmyungjo were read significantly faster than Sinmoonmyungjo. There was a weak negative relationship between readability and age in Sinmyungjo. In comparing between the top 10% and the bottom 10% group sorted by reading rate, the top group showed lower average age and addition than the bottom group, however there were no significant differences in reading rate among the fonts. Conclusions: Although increasing age tends to be low in readability for Sinmyungjo, in the light of preferred font and readability, it is recommended to use a 10 pt Sinmyungjo font in printed materials for the presbyopic age.
Hangul is a language that is composed of initial, medial, and final syllables. It has 11,172 characters. For this reason, the current method of designing all the characters by hand is very expensive and time-consuming. In order to solve the problem, this paper proposes an automatic Hangul font generation system and evaluates the standards for mapping Hangul characters to produce an effective automated Hangul font generation system. The system was implemented using character generation engine based on deep learning CycleGAN. In order to evaluate the criteria when mapping characters in pairs, each criterion was designed based on Hangul structure and character shape, and the quality of the generated characters was evaluated. As a result of the evaluation, the standards designed based on the Hangul structure did not affect the quality of the automated Hangul font generation system. On the other hand, when tried with similar characters, the standards made based on the shape of Hangul characters produced better quality characters than when tried with less similar characters. As a result, it is better to generate automated Hangul font by designing a learning method based on mapping characters in pairs that have similar character shapes.

The author's thesis is that the types used for the large-sized characters seen in the two metal type-printed books "Kyosik chubopop karyong"(交食推步法假令) and "Yok-hak kemong yohae"(易學啓蒙要解) both printed in 1458 belong to a new metal font hitherto unnamed. The former book was compiled by Yi Sun-ji(李純之) and Kim Sok-je(金石梯) in January of 1458 in accordance to King Sejo's order. A new font was created to be used for the large-sized characters of the book. Several. months after completion of the compilation, the book was printed with mixed use of the new font and the Kabin-ja(甲寅字) for medium- and small-sized characters. The latter book had been written by King Sejo before his accession to the throne. Ascending the throne the king had his scholar-subjects examine the writing to correct it where necessary. The examination was completed in July of 1458 and printing was immediately done with the two fonts the above-mentioned, new font for the large-sized letters and the Kabin-ja for the medium- and small-sized ones. The books were granted to the scholar-subjects and the students of the Sung Kyun Kwan Academy as a royal gift. The matrix seems to have been modeled after the calligraphy of King Sejo. Because the new font was created to print the large-sized letters of the two books in 1458, it may be proper to name it "Muin-ja" using the "kanji"(干支) of the year. The author is happy to identify and include another font in the list of Korean movable types as a result of the present study.
Irradiation is a phenomenon that causes white objects on a black background to appear to spread into near dark backgrounds, but the reverse is not. In this study, the effects of font size and thickness of letters on the legibility were investigated in combinations of black letters/white background as well as white letters/black background. Ten subjects who had been no disease of eyes and their eyesight is over 1.0 were recruited and tested subjective assessments of letter sizes for various font sizes (2pt to 80pt) and thickness of letters (normal, bold) under 600lux illumination and 50cm-distance of eyes and target letters for this study. Ming-style font type which was generally used in text of books, papers, and journals were tested in this study. Results showed that generally people subjectively assessed the white letters on black background (W/B) were larger sizes of letters than the black letters on white background (B/W) even both letter sizes were the same in both normal and bold thickness of letters. This phenomenon was happened in case of only over 22 font size (with border line about 22~24pts). Less than 22 font sizes, many people reported that both letters (W/B and B/W) are looks the same sizes in normal as well as bold letters. These findings were interpreted also by the irradiation phenomenon and more detail information was presented in this manuscript.
This study is about the effect on the user's cognitive stress by font size when they read on PDA (Personal Digital Assistant). The evaluation was done through both subjective evaluation and physiological one, which is brain wave test, while the research and analysis were focused on the relationship between the user's cognitive stress and font, size. The two final results were found out as follows. 1) Font sizes, which were tested, were 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16points. Among theses, font size 14 was the least stressful for the users. while the most stressful size was found out 8 points. 2) The cerebral cortex reaction according to the font size activated occipital lobe, parietal lobe of occipital visual area. Here we could come to a very important conclusion that the smaller font size on mobile information appliances mate users the more stressed.
Each font has its own unique characteristics, thus every font relays a different feeling. The proper selection and usage of fonts helps us further understand the contents they deliver. Use of fonts which varies depending on one's habits or experience, expands the meaning of contents. Hence, users should pick up the most appropriate fontto comply with meanings, gender, age, objects, and cultural environment. The Proper selection of fonts have been emphasized by various researches but currently, there are not much studies undertaken within the domain of fonts. Furthermore, there are no definite standards or guidelines to proper font selection or their usage. This study delves into changes of font preference according to meaningful sentences and meaningless sentences with the former comprising in positive and negative sentences. The authors of this research hope that this study will help users to understand the necessity for application of different fonts in tune with each meaning , guideline for the application methods, provision of instruction on developing fonts to font makers.
