  • Gonadal development, reproductive cycle, gonad index, meat weight rate, and first sexual maturity of the top shell, Omphalius rusticus were Investigated monthly by histological observations. Specimens were collected from the west coast of Korea during the period from January to December in 1999. O. rusticus is dioecious and oviparous. The gonad is widely situated on the surface of the digestive g1and located in the posterior spiral meat part in the shell. The ovary and the testis were composed of a number of oogenic follicles and several spermatogenic follicles, respectively. Ripe oocytes were approximately 120-130 $\mu$m in diameter. The meat weight rate peaked in June (27.7%), and then rapidly decreased in September (19.5%). Monthly changes in the gonad index in both sexes reached the maximum in June, and then sharply decreased in September. Percentages of first sexual maturity of female and male snails ranging from 9.0 to 9.9 mm in shell heights were 58.3% and 54.5%, respectively, and 100% in those over 11.0 mm in both sexes participated in reproduction. Reproductive cycle of this species can be categorized into five successive stages: in females, early active (October to April), late active (December to June), ripe (April to September), spawning (July to September) and recovery (September to January): in males, early active (November to March), late active (December to June), ripe (April to September), spawning (July to September) and recovery (September to December). Gonadal development, gametogenesis, reproductive cycle, and spawning were closely related to the seawater temperature.

  • In order to investigate the effect of sulfamonomethoxine on the thyroid gland, healthy mongrel dogs were selected at random. The body weights of these animals ranged between 1850 and 2050g at the beginning of the experiment. The 12 dogs used in this work were allotted to groups of two. Dogs in one group served as controls and the others were administered sulfamonomethoxine of 50 mg/kg/day for 15 weeks. The results obtained in this work were summerized as follows: 1. Mean body weights of experimental dogs revelled a slow increasing tendency but weights of thyroid glands were increased highly. 2. Thyroid follicles were atrophied significantly in accordance with experimental term and their colloidal substance was not found on stained sections. 3. It indicated the appearance of typical hyperplastic goiter. New follicular epithelial cells which were changed into hypertrophic cuboidal and columnar in type showed degeneration and necrosis and those cells multiplied difusely and made new small follicles.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the factors affecting superovulation in rabbits and to determine the effect of pFSH and PMSG on ovarian superovulatory responses and embryo production, and the effect of superovulation treatment with a single injection of pFSH dissolved in polyvinylpyrrolidone on the ovarian responses and the embryo quality. The results obtained were suonmerized as follows: Superovulatory response resulted in significantly (P<0.05) higher ovulation rates and more embryos in spring or autumn, compared with summer or winter. Repeated superovulatory treatments with PMSG leaded to a significantly(P<0.05) decreased number of total follicles and recovered ova. Superovulation with pFSH resulted in the higher number of ovulated follicles and recovered ova than with PMSG. A single subcutaneous injection of pFSH dissolved in 25% PVP resulted in the more ovulation points(33.2) and recovered embryos(30.2), which were comparable to the multiple injections of pFSH(44.8 vs 37.7).These results indicated that the treatment with a single injection of FSH dissolved in PVP was an efficient and simple alternative method to the conventional multiple FSH injections for superovulation in rabbits.

  • Gonadal development and reproductive cycle of Aplysia kurodai inhabiting the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea were investigated based on monthly changes of gonadosomatic index, gametogenesis, and developmental phases of ovotestis. A. kurodai was simultaneous hermaphrodite; the ovotestis generally embedded in the posterior dorsal surface of the brownish digestive gland. The ovotestis is composed of a large number of follicles, and both oocytes and sperm are produced in the same follicles. In the sampling periods, the adult A. kurodai population have characteristic of seasonal pattern present during only 10 months. The reproductive cycle can be grouped into the following successive stages in the ovary: inactive (December to February), active (December to April), mature and spawning (April to September). The gonadal development of A. kurodai coincided with rising temperature, and spawning occurred from April to September, when the temperature was high. The histological observations of the ovotestis suggested that this species have a single spawning season that extend over six months.

  • Arachidonic acid (AA) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that is a normal constituent of membrane lipids in animal cells. In addition to its role as a precursor of prostaglandins, AA itself may play an important role in the regulation of cell function. The effect of AA on functions of granulosa cells was investigated in pre-hierarchical small yellow follicles of laying hens. Immuno-cytochemical staining showed that AA ($10^{-7}-10^{-5}$ M) increased the expression of the extracellular matrix glycoprotein laminin, gap junction connexin 43 and protein kinase C (PKC). Therefore, mediated by the PKC signal pathway, AA may regulate the intercellular communication of granulosa cells and follicular development by increasing the expression of laminin and connexin.

  • Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is a very disturbing and expensive disorder in which the exact etiology is not known and it is yet to be treated completely well. Most alopecia patients exhibit some inflammation in the hair follicles regardless of the causes. The clinical symptoms of alopecia present very diversely while the prime symptom is local intermittent fever which are related to inflamed cells. Methods: This study aimed to evaluate how repetitive intermittent fever can damage the normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cells and investigated the cytotoxic and proliferative effects after application of new candidate drugs (ibuprofen, menthol, cetirizine) for alopecia in comparison to minoxidil. Results: This study demonstrated that ibuprofen, menthol, or/and cetirizine can prevent or slow down the damage of NHDF cells from intermittent fever in early alopecia. Aggressive preventative intervention with those drugs before complete destruction of hair follicle by excessive repetitive fever, is a very important step for alopecia therapy and these drugs are recommended as candidate drugs for alopecia in the future. Conclusion: Aggressive preventative intervention with drugs before complete destruction of hair follicles (NHDF cells) by excessive repetitive fever is a very important step for alopecia therapy or progression.

  • The experiment was designed on 42 non pregnant Black Bengal goat. Out of which 18 were subjected to a superovulatory treatment comprising of eCG and hCG for embryo transfer study. The remaining 24 goats received no treatment and served as control for parameter studied as well as recipient for embryo transfer studies. Important biochemical constituents such as acid and alkaline phosphatase, total protein and cholesterol and inorganic phosphorus were estimated in the follicular fluid of control and treated group and the values were separately recorded for small medium and large size follicle. The results indicated a significant effect on acid phosphotase activity due to size of follicle. The value increased progressively from small to medium and from medium to large follicles. Alkaline phosphotase activity showed reverse trend. Alkaline phosphotase decreased progressively as size increased. The concentration of inorganic phosphorus did not reveal any significant difference between the control and treatment groups and also between the different size follicles. The concentration of protein decreased significantly from small to medium and from medium to large, although no difference was observed between the control and treatment groups. The concentration of Cholesterol in the follicular fluid indicated a significant increase from small to medium and to large follicle. Here also no difference was observed due to treatment. Similar in the composition of follicular fluid in the respect of above mentioned constituents indicated no of super ovulatory treatment on follicular fluid composition.

  • Objective : This study was designed to investigate the effects of Angelicae Gigantis Radix (AGR) on Polycystic Ovary (PCO) induced by Estradiol valerate (EV) in female rats. Methods : We investigated the effects of AGR on Changes in body weights and food and water uptake for 5 weeks. In addition, we examined the effects on ovary weights. Finally, we also observed histopathological changes in PCO rats. Results : Treatment with AGR did not affect body weights, amount of food and water uptake. Administration group of AGR restored body/ovary weight ratio to normal levels, which were lowered by induction of PCO. In histopathological observation, formation of cysts was suppressed in AGR group compared with non-treated control group. Conclusion : These results suggest that AGR can be used for patients with PCO to prevent formation of cystic follicles and malfunction of ovary.
