Methods for absolute depth estimation have received lots of interest, and most algorithms are concerned about how to minimize the difference between an input defocused image and an estimated defocused image. These approaches may increase the complexity of the algorithms to calculate the defocused image from the estimation of the focused image. In this paper, we present a new method to recover depth of scene based on a sharpness-assessment algorithm. The proposed algorithm estimates the depth of scene by calculating the sharpness of deconvolved images with a specific point-spread function (PSF). While most depth estimation studies evaluate depth of the scene only behind a focal plane, the proposed method evaluates a broad depth range both nearer and farther than the focal plane. This is accomplished using an asymmetric aperture, so the PSF at a position nearer than the focal plane is different from that at a position farther than the focal plane. From the image taken with a focal plane of 160 cm, the depth of object over the broad range from 60 to 350 cm is estimated at 10 cm resolution. With an asymmetric aperture, we demonstrate the feasibility of the sharpness-assessment algorithm to recover absolute depth of scene from a single defocused image.
The recent Multiple Lapse Time Window (MLTW) analysis of Korean Peninsula event showed that the focal depth was far greater influence factor than the velocity structure of the model, applying the analysis of the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. Thus, using the events with focal depth of about 10 km, this study considered 330 paths connecting 41 events and 71 stations, and re-examined uniform and depth-dependent velocity models previously studied. As a result, the residual of misfit function greatly decrease from analytic model to DSMC model, reflecting variation of the focal depth from 0 to 10 km. On the other hand, the difference of residuals for each velocity model were relatively small.

2017 Pohang earthquake (M 5.4) was more disastrous than 2016 Gyeongju earthquake (M 5.8), partly because of its shallow focal depth. However, precise focal depth of Pohang earthquake is still controversial. Close crustal model showed 6 ~ 11.5 km in relocation depth, whereas other models showed almost surface range. Geothermal study indicated temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ at depth of 7.5 km. Related with observations of seismogenic layer, the focal depth of Pohang earthquake seems to be 7 km depth as obtained by close model.

The results from the Individual Plant Examination of External Event of Yonggwyang nuclear power plants, unit 3 & 4, in Korea have shown that the high degree of diversities of the experts' opinions on seismicity and attenuation models is su, pp.sed to be generic cause of uncertainty of APEs(annual exceedance probability) in the PAHA(probabilistic seismic hazard analysis). This study investigated the sensitivity of the focal depth, which is one of the most uncertain seismicity parameters in Korea, Significant differences in resultant values of annual exceedance probabilities and much more symmetrical shape of the resultant PDFs(probability density functions), in case of consideration of focal depth, are found. These two results suggest that, even for the same seismic input data set including the seismicity models and ground motion attenuation models, to consider focal depth additionally for probabilistic seismic hazard analysis evaluation makes significant influence on the distributions of uncertainties and probabilities of exceedance per year for the whole ranges of seismic hazard levels. These facts suggest that it is necessary to derive focal depth parameter more effectively from the historical and instrumental documents on earthquake phenomena in Koran Peninsula for the future study of PSHA.

We propose a novel bi-focal metallic Fresnel zone plate (MFZP) with shallow depth-of-field (DOF) characteristics. We design the specific annular slit patterns, exploiting the phase-selection-rule method along with the particle swarm optimization algorithm, which we have recently proposed. We numerically investigate the novel characteristics of the bi-focal MFZP in comparison with those of another bi-focal MFZP having equivalent functionality but designed by the conventional multi-zone method. We verify that whilst both bi-focal MFZPs can produce dual focal spots at $15{\mu}m$ and $25{\mu}m$ away from the MFZP plane, the former exhibits characteristics superior to those of the latter from the viewpoint of axial resolution, including the axial side lobe suppression and axial DOF shallowness. We expect the proposed bi-focal MFZP can readily be fabricated with electron-beam evaporation and focused-ion-beam processes and further be exploited for various applications, such as laser micro-machining, optical trapping, biochemical sensing, confocal sensing, etc.

Depth from defocus estimates the 3D depth by using a phenomenon in which the object in the focal plane of the camera forms a clear image but the object away from the focal plane produces a blurred image. In this paper, algorithms are studied to estimate 3D depth by analyzing the degree of blur of the image taken with a single camera. The optimized object range was obtained by 3D depth estimation derived from depth from defocus using one image of a single camera or two images of different focus of a single camera. For depth estimation using one image, the best performance was achieved using a focal length of 250 mm for both smartphone and DSLR cameras. The depth estimation using two images showed the best 3D depth estimation range when the focal length was set to 150 mm and 250 mm for smartphone camera images and 200 mm and 300 mm for DSLR camera images.
A phase-retardation function which was derived from Wigner distribution function (WDF) is used to increase a focal depth of a radially symmetric optical system. The WDF for one-dimensional signal is represented as a two-dimensional function of phasespace ($\chi,\zeta$), and a normalized irradiance is described as a form of the Strehl ratio (SR). The increase in the focal depth is accomplished by delivering a shearing tilt a that represents a characteristic of free space propagation with simple manipulation in the WDF space. In this paper we propose a method for evaluating the focal depth quantitatively by representing the phaseretardation function in terms of the focal depth term. In order to verify the validity of the proposed method, we compared the numerically analyzed result with that of J. Sochki's study. study.

The common way to obtain a stereoscopic image of a subject at a distance is to place two cameras on the parallel axis rather than crossing axis. To find the IAD and maximum focal length, left and right images are obtained by varying the IAD of cameras and the focal length of the camera lens and the depth budget for the obtained images is analyzed through post production. Then, the database for IAD and focal length of the camera lens with the depth range that does not cause visual fatigue and visual discomfort are developed. These data are used to design fuzzy control and deduce the IAD and focal length of the camera lens to shoot a subject at a distance, and the function of the fuzzy control is confirmed through the actual shooting within the range of deduced IAD and focal length of the camera lens.

The seismic source parameters of the Uljin earthquake on 29 May 2004, including focal depth, focal mechanism, magnitude, and moment tensor elements for source characteristics, are analysed using moment tensor seismic source inversion. The Green‘s function for 3 crust models representing the southern Korean Peninsula are used. Also 3 kinds of epicenters are used to find optimum solution for seismic source parameters. Results show that seismic source parameters have a little dependency of azimuthal distribution and epicentral distances of seismic stations. Final results show that the event, considering 6 moment tensor elements, is caused by the typical reverse fault with nearly NS strike. The focal mechanism implies that the tectonic force around epicenter area currently has compressive environment, with nearly EW principal axis. The focal depth is estimated to be about 12km. The resultant focal mechanism show fairly good agreement to those of other studies. However, focal depth is much different from that of other studies.
Catadioptric mirrors are widely used in automatic surveillance system. The major drawback of catadioptric mirror is its unequal image resolution. Equidistance catadioptric mirrir can be the solution to this problem. The exact axial alignment and the exact mount of mirror are the sources that can be avoided but the focal length variation is inevitable. In this paper, the effects of focal length variation on the computation of depth and height of object' point are explained and the effective and simple focal length finding algorithm is presented. First two object's points are selected, and the counterparts on the other stereo image are to be found using MSE criterion. Using four pixel distance from the image center, the assumed focal length is calculated. If the obtained focal length is different from the exact focal length, 24mm, the focal length value is modified by the proposed method. The method is very simple and gives the comparable results with the earlier sophisticated method.
