This study was conducted for engineering optimization for the gasification process which is the key factor for success of Taean IGCC gasification plant which has been driven forward under the government support in order to expand to supply new and renewable energy and diminish the burden of the responsibility for the reduction of the green house gas emission. The gasification process consists of coal milling and drying, pressurization and feeding, gasification, quenching and HP syngas cooling, slag removal system, dry flyash removal system, wet scrubbing system, and primary water treatment system. The configuration optimization is essential for the high efficiency and the cost saving. For this purpose, it was designed to have syngas cooler to recover the sensible heat as much as possible from the hot syngas produced from the gasifier which is the dry-feeding and entrained bed slagging type and also applied with the oxygen combustion and the first stage cylindrical upward gas flow. The pressure condition inside of the gasifier is around 40~45Mpg and the temperature condition is up to $1500{\sim}1700^{\circ}C$. It was designed for about 70% out of fly ash to be drained out throughout the quenching water in the bottom part of the gasifier as a type of molten slag flowing down on the membrane wall and finally become a byproduct over the slag removal system. The flyash removal system to capture solid particulates is applied with HPHT ceramic candle filter to stand up against the high pressure and temperature. When it comes to the residual tiny particles after the flyash removal system, wet scurbbing system is applied to finally clean up the solids. The washed-up syngas through the wet scrubber will keep around $130{\sim}135^{\circ}C$, 40~42Mpg and 250 ppmv of hydrochloric acid(HCl) and hydrofluoric acid(HF) at maximum and it is turned over to the gas treatment system for removing toxic gases out of the syngas to comply with the conditions requested from the gas turbine. The result of this study will be utilized to the detailed engineering, procurement and manufacturing of equipments, and construction for the Taean IGCC plant and furthermore it is the baseline technology applicable for the poly-generation such as coal gasification(SNG) and liquefaction(CTL) to reinforce national energy security and create new business models.

This study investigates the influence of various blending factors on cement paste fluidity and find out the most effective evaluation method of cement paste flow, comparing flow test apparatuses such as ring flow(R-F), flow cone(F-C) and mini slump(M-S). A viscometer also measures the rheology coefficients to secure faithful numerical data. Firstly, series I examines cement paste, affected by several cement products and mineral admixture types in the range of W/B 40%, ordinary fluidity, and W/B 30%, high fluidity. In this series, the three types of cement product depended on companies, are randomly used and the mineral admixture, such as fly ash, blast furnace slag and silica fume, are incorporated in the cement paste, in response to the ratio of 10, 20, to 30%, respectively. In addition, series II studies various chemical admixture types, affecting the cement paste. This series is carried out with manufacturing companies and component types in the range of W/C 30%, high fluidity. For the manufacturing companies, randomly four products are used and for the component types, polycaboxylate, melamine, naphthalene and lignosulfonate type are chosen. Test results showed that in the fluidity test of cement paste considering various types of blending factors, R-F exhibited similar tendency with F-C and M-S. In the analysis of consistency curves measured by viscometer, the fluidity evaluation method using flow test apparatuses was significantly effective, except for the some of the low fluidity specimens. In conclusion of this study, R-F was the most convenient, faithful and effective fluidity evaluation method of cement paste.
A novel MgO-based binder was developed and applied to treat the anoxic sediment that was collected from Seonakdong river, Korea and was contaminated with heavy metals. The treated sediment was evaluated by measuring compressive strength, expansion, leaching of heavy metals and storage characteristics for $CO_2$. Initially, an optimal blending ratio of lime (L)/fly ash (FA)/blast furnace slag (BFS) that was to be mixed with MgO was screened to be $L_{0.3}-FA_{0.1}-BFS_{0.6}$. Long-term strengths of the sediments that were treated by various mixtures of MgO and $L_{0.3}-FA_{0.1}-BFS_{0.6}$ were then evaluated and the blending ratios between 4 : 6 and 6 : 4 were found optimal, which yielded a compressive strength of 4.09 MPa. On this basis, the optimal MgO-based binder was selected to be a 5 : 5 mixture of MgO and $L_{0.3}-FA_{0.1}-BFS_{0.6}$. The good performance of the MgO-based binder was believed to be due to the formation of Mg $(OH)_2$, which filled the micropores and also increased the density of the solidified matrices. The MgO-based binder exhibited an average stabilizing capacities for heavy metals of 92.9%, which was similar to or higher than that of Portland cement. It was found that 69.1 kg of carbon dioxide could be sequestrated after 365 days of curing when treating a ton of anoxic sediments.

Recently, several failure cases of concrete structures during construction have been reported. The main reason for these failures is attributed to the poor quality of concrete during construction. It is, therefore. necessary to develop and use high quality concrete. The purpose of the present study is to explore the characteristics of superplasticized concrete, especially the effects of mineral admixtures on the fluidity and strength characteristics of high performance concrete. The mineral admixtures considered in the present study are fly ash, blast furnace slag and silica fume, respectively. The major test variables include the amount of these mineral admixtures, cement contents and water-cement ratios. The compressive strengths for various cases were measured and reported. Optimum contents of mineral admixtures for strength development were derived. The corrosion phenomena of reinforcements embedded in various concrete specimens have been also studied. The present study provides useful basis to apply high-performance concrete to actual structures.

In this paper, tests were carried out to monitor the effect of the curing temperature on autogenous shrinkage of the high strength cement mortar incorporating silica fume, blast furnace slag and fly ash ranged from 10%~30% by mass of cement. The curing temperatures were varied from $5^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$, respectively. According to results, the setting time exhibited to delay with increase of admixture and drop of temperature. As for the effect of curing temperature on autogenous shrinkage, the increase of SF and BS resulted in an increase of autogenous shrinkage, while the use of FA decrease. The higher the curing temperature is, the greater the autogenous shrinkage is. This is due to the accelerated hydration rate of cement. It is found that the maturity does not consider the effect of curing temperature on autogenous shrinkage.

GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) is one of the most actively used mineral admixtures with excellent long-aged strength and chloride diffusion resistance. Unlike Standard covering GGBFS in Japan and the U.K., the domestic standard for GGBFS does not contain low fineness of GGBFS under 4000 grade. In this paper, several basic tests are carried out for the concrete with 3,000 grade GGBFS concrete and ternary blended concrete for reducing hydration heat by mixing 4,000 grade GGBFS and fly ash, such as fresh concrete properties, compressive strength, and shrinkage properties. The air content and slump between the ternary blended concrete and the concrete with low-fineness GGBFS showed the similar level, and the results of difference in setting time from them were less than 20 minutes, showing no significant difference. In the evaluation of compressive strength and shrinkage characteristics, the ternary blended concrete showed lower long-aged strength and higher shrinkage than the low-fineness GGBFS concrete.

Cement hydrates and the related characteristics change with ages, and the behaviors are much related with chloride diffusion. In this work, 30% replacement ratio with FA(Fly Ash) and GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) are considered for concrete with three levels of W/B (Water to Binder ratio) and 2 years of curing period. Chloride diffusion coefficients from accelerated condition are obtained at 5 measurement period (28days, 56days, 180days, 365days, and 730days), and the results are compared with porosity, binding capacity, and permeability from program-DUCOM. The similar changing pattern between chloride diffusion and permeability is observed since permeability is proportional to the square of porosity. Curing period is grouped into 4 periods and the changing ratios are investigated. Cement hydrate characteristics such as porosity, permeability, and diffusion coefficient are dominantly changed at the early ages (28~56 days), and diffusion coefficient in OPC concrete with low W/B continuously changes to 180days.

Over the past three decades, self-compacting concrete (SCC), which is characterized by its superior rheological properties, has been gradually used in construction industry. It is now recognized that the application of SCC using supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) is highly attractive and promising technology reducing the environmental impact of the construction industry and reducing the higher materials costs. This paper presents an experimental study that investigated the mechanical and durability properties of SCCs manufactured with blended binders including fly ash, slag, and micro-silica. A total of 8 batches of SCCs were manufactured. As series of tests were conducted to establish the rheological properties, compressive strength, and durability properties including the water absorption, water permeability, rapid chloride permeability and initial surface absorption of the SCCs. The influences of the SCC strength grade, blended types and content on the properties of the SCCs are investigated. Unified reactive indices are proposed based on the mix proportion and the chemical composition of the corresponding binders are used to assess the compressive strength and strength development of the SCCs. The results also indicate the differences in the underlying mechanisms to drive the durability properties of the SCC at the different strength grades.

The objective of this study is to examine the fatigue behavior in compression of normal-weight and lightweight concrete mixtures with high volume supplementary cementitious material(SCM). The selected binder composition was 30% ordinary portland cement, 20% fly-ash, and 50% ground granulated blast-furnace slag. The targeted compressive strength of concrete was 40 MPa. For the cyclic loading, the constant maximum stress level varied to be 75%, 80%, and 90% of the static uniaxial compressive strength, whereas the constant minimum stress level was fixed at 10% of the static strength. The test results showed that fatigue life of high volume SCM lightweight concrete was lower than the companion normalweight concrete. The value of the fatigue strain at the maximum stress level intersected the descending branch of the monotonic stress-strain curve after approximately 90% of the fatigue life.
