  • This study investigates the characteristics of turbulent fluxes observed at Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) in autumn 2014. The 10 Hz IORS data is quality controlled and calculated to be the 30 minutes turbulent fluxes. The quality control consists of five steps: a weather check, Vickers and Mahrt (VM) sequential check, VM parallel check, flag check, and direction check. Since the IORS is an open-sea station with no orographic influence, there are no significant diurnal variations for the turbulent fluxes and 10 m wind speed. According to stabilities, the unstable and semi-unstable states appear more than 28% and 70% in autumn, respectively and they have strong winds of over $10m\;s^{-1}$. In addition, the turbulent fluxes increase with increasing wind speed. In particular, the latent heat flux and its deviations are clearly shown because the latent heat flux is influenced by the change of both the sea surface roughness and wave height induced by the wind. To demonstrate the changes of the turbulent fluxes before and after typhoon, Vongpong (1419), which is the most intense typhoon affecting the Korean Peninsula in 2014, is considered. The turbulent flux fluctuates in accordance with the location of Vongpong. The turbulent fluxes have a large (small) variation when Vongpong approaches (retreats) at the IORS. The overall results represent that the IORS data helps us understand physical processes related to air-sea interaction by providing the valuable and reliable observed data.

  • A new theoretical critical heat flux (CHF) model was developed for the forced convective flow boiling at high pressure, high mass velocity, and low quality. The present model for an intermittent vapor blanket was basically derived from the sublayer dryout theory without including any empirical constant. The vapor blanket velocity was estimated by an axial force balance, and the thickness of vapor blanket was determined by a radial force balance for the Marangoni force and lift force. Based on the comparison of the predicted CHF with the experimental data taken from previous studies, the present CHF model showed satisfactory results with reasonable accuracy.

  • An experimental study was carried out to measure the heat transfer coefficient in flow boiling to mixtures of HFC-l34a and HCFC-123 in a uniformly heated horizontal tube. Tests were run at a pressure of 0.6 MPa and in the ranges of heat flux 1-50 kw/$m^2$, vapor quality 0-100 % and mass velocity 150-600 kg/$m^2$s. Heat transfer coefficients of mixture were less than the interpolated values between pure fluids both in the low quality region where the nucleate boiling is dominant and in the high quality region where the convective evaporation is dominant. Measured data of heat transfer are compared to a few available correlations proposed for mixtures. The correlation of Jung et. al. satisfactorily predicted the present data, but the data in lower quality was overpredicted and underpredicted the high quality data. The correlation of Kandlikar considerably underpredicted most of the data. and showed the mean deviation of 35.1%.

  • It is important to quantitatively analyze the energy budget for understanding of long-term climate change in Arctic. High-quality and long-term radiative parameters are needed to understand the energy budget. Since most of radiative flux components based on satellite are provide for a short period, several data must be used together. It is important to acquaint differences between data to link for conjunction with several data. In this study, we investigated the comparative analysis of Arctic radiative flux product such as CERES and GEWEX to provide basic information for data linkage and analysis of changes in Arctic climate. As a result, GEWEX was underestimated the radiative variables, and it difference between the two data was about $3{\sim}25W/m^2$. In addition, the difference in high-latitude and sea ice regions have increased. In case of comparing with monthly means, the other variables except for longwave downward flux represent high difference of $9.26{\sim}26.71W/m^2$ in spring-summer season. The results of this study can be used standard data for blending and selecting GEWEX and CERES radiative flux data due to recognition of characteristics according to ice-ocean area, season, and regions.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of experimental parameters on the hydrodynamic characteristics in a horizontal tee-type evaporator using R-22. The experimental apparatus consisted of an unheated tee-type test section, a liquid-vapor separator, a preheated, mass flow meters, a plate heat exchanger, pump, and other measurement devices. The experimental parameters were mass flux(500 and 600kg/$m^2$s), inlet quality(0.1~0.3) and separation ratio(0.3~0.7). Absolute pressure at the inlet of the test section was 0.652 MPa. The branch-to-inlet inner diameter ratio was 0.61. Pressure gradient at the branch section was larger than that at the run section at the same separation ratio. Pressure drop per unit length increased at the run section and decreased at the branch section as the separation ratio increased. Pressure drop predicted by the separated flow model agreed with experimental data within -35 to +16%. Generally, predicted values showed similar trend with the data. Mass flow ratio of vapor refrigerant was affected by the inlet quality more than the mass flux.

  • The forced convective boiling heat transfer coefficients of R-407C were measured inside a horizontal tube 6.0mm I.D. and 4.0m long. The heat transfer coefficients increased according to an increase in heat flux at constant mass flux. Because nucleation was completely suppressed in the two-phase flow region with high quality, heat transfer coefficients in forced convective evaporation were higher than those in nucleate boiling region. Average heat transfer coefficients of R-407C were about 30 percent lower than the pure refrigerant correlation, due to mass transfer resistance at the gas-liquid interface. However, the total experimental data shows an agreement with the predicted data for ternary refrigerant mixtures with a mean deviation of 30%.

  • This study suggests a general methodology which is designed for assessing RDOC behavior at the catchment scale by coupling properly a series of steam flow and water quality simulation models and actual monitoring data set. The modified TANK model in which a river routing function is incorporated to the conventional one is applied to simulate the long-term daily stream flow data, and the simulated stream flow data is combined with the 7-parameter log-linear model coupled to the minimum variance unbiased estimator to simulate the long-term daily water quality (BOD, COD and TOC) loads. Finally, the regression analysis between the usually monitored water quality data (BOD, COD and TOC) and RDOC is combined with the simulated water quality data to manifest the spatio-temporal variability of RDOC flux behavior at the Korean TMDL catchment scale.

  • Injecting currents into an electrically conducting subject, we may measure the induced magnetic flux density distributions using an MRI scanner. The measured data are utilized to reconstruct cross-sectional images of internal conductivity and current density distributions in Magnetic Resonance Electrical Impedance Tomography (MREIT). Injection currents are usually provided in a form of mono-polar or bi-polar pulses synchronized with an MR pulse sequence. Given an MRI scanner performing the MR phase imaging to extract the induced magnetic flux density data, the current source becomes one of the key parts determining the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the measured data. Since this SNR is crucial in determining the quality of reconstructed MREIT images, special care must be given in the design and implementation of the current source. This paper describes a current source design for MREIT with features including interleaved current injection, arbitrary current waveform, electrode switching to discharge any stored charge from previous current injections, optical isolation from an MR spectrometer and PC, precise current injection timing control synchronized with any MR pulse sequence, and versatile PC control program. The performance of the current source was verified using a 3T MRI scanner and saline phantoms.

  • Terrestrial vegetation has been known as a main source of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). Isoprene and monoterpene among the BVOCs are most abundant species emitted by forests, and have a significant impact on atmospheric chemistry. Abundancy of these species could lead to an increase or decrease in the production of natural tropospheric ozone in forests, depending on the nitric oxide (NO) concentration. Soil is the most significant source of natural NO. Understanding of NO emission from forest soil could be critical in evaluation of air quality in the forest area. Flux-gradient similarity theory (FGST) was applied for practical use to estimate forest soil NO emission at Mt. Taewha where is available micro-meteorological data near surface monitoring from flux tower. NO fluxes calculated by FGST were compared to flux results by flow-through dynamic chamber (FDC) measurement. Surface NO emission trends were shown between two different techniques, however their magnitudes were found to be different. NO emissions measured from FDC technique were relatively higher than those from theoretical results. Daily mean NO emissions resulted from FGST during Aug. 13, 14 and 15 were $0.28{\pm}8.45$, $2.17{\pm}15.55$, and $-3.18{\pm}13.65{\mu}gm^{-2}hr^{-1}$, respectively, while results from FDC were $2.26{\pm}1.44$, $5.11{\pm}3.85$, and $2.23{\pm}6.45{\mu}gm^{-2}hr^{-1}$. Trends of daily means were shown in similar pattern, which NO emissions were increasing during late afternoon ($r^2$=0.04). These emission trends could be because soil temperature and moisture influence importantly soil microbiology.

  • Flow condensation heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of R22, propylene, propane, DME and isobutane are measured on a horizontal plain tube. The main test section in the experimental flow loop is made of a plain copper tube of 9.52 mm outside diameter and 530 mm length. The refrigerant is cooled by passing cold water through an annulus surrounding the test section. Tests are performed at a fixed refrigerant saturation temperature of $40{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$ with mass fluxes of 100, 200, $300kg/m^2s$ and heat flux of $7.3\sim7.7kW/m^2$. The data are obtained in the vapor Quality range of $10\sim90%$. Test results show that at same mass flux the flow condensation HTCs of propylene, propane, DME and isobutane are higher than those of R22 by up to 46.8%, 53.3%, 93.5% and 61.6% respectively. Also well-known correlations developed based upon conventional fluorocarbon refrigerants predict the present data within a mean deviation of 30%. Finally, the pressure drop increase as the mass flux and Quality increase and isobutane shows the highest pressure drop due to its lowest vapor pressure among the fluids tested.
